Clean 16ths at 300bpm is something a very small handful of drummers can do and usually only under the most ideal conditions. It's almost like a perfect lab result, and not something that can realistically be replicated live. Of course that opens up the discussion of should it be on the album if they can't do it live. This particular section is also just one small outlier in the larger Dimmu discography, so I think it's okay to not be 100% true to the album for 4 bars, especially when the focus of the band isn't on speed or technicality anyways. However if it were a band like Origin, I would expect the live version to match the recording. Daray played the song exactly as he should have. Solid is better than speed, especially live.
This reminds me of the 2 times I saw Fleshgod Apocalypse. First time was in 2012 with Francesco Paoli on Drums. Then in 2018 with David Folchitto. Even though Folchitto is a great drummer, he needed to modify like 80% of the set from 16th notes to triplets, both double bass and blast beats. It was hard to hear, I must admit. In this case, Daray can play 99.99% of the set perfectly, so it keeps being a great performance.
I agree. I saw him in a tiny club in my hometown so I had a really great view and he was INSANE. Super precise, ridiculously fast and he made it look effortless. An absolute machine!
I have never played a big festival, but i´ve been on some. and seeing such an awesome band live, will always be greater, then some decissions, like "do i play this part the safe way so i can keep the immersion for the audience or do i risc it for some nerds" just my pov
I haven't tried attending to any metal concert in my lifetime but I do agree with Marthyn with this. Playing a fewer notes that sounds tight rather than playing more notes that has mistakes. I also do that in my drum covers too!
I've played warped tour, I wear a costume for my band and I have to wear fairly heavy ankle boots, oddly enough I also play speedcobras. I don't hit speeds this extreme (my fastest parts are 16th-note triplets at 150). I've never had the opportunity to use triggers and so because of that and the boots, I play full leg motion and really dig into those parts. Recently, over the course of 2021, I've been learning the swivel technique. My boots have leather souls, so the swivel is actually really easy in my boots, I'm hoping to get comfortable playing faster double bass for our next album.
1. I fully agree with your personal point of view on the choice here made onstage. 2. I never heard about this drummer before but, after watching this drum cam, I don't know how can one pretend this guy is a "bad drummer" based solely on his speed performance on 4 bars... His overall precision and musical drumming along the song speak for themselves.... This guy is a great drummer. 3. I know it's not exactly extreme metal but... will you one day react on Daniel Erlandsson?
Man, you just reminded me of Doc from Vader, out of nowhere. I was and still am such a huge fan of this guy. His drumming on Litany absolutely blew me away as a kid.
Hahaha! I wish I could have just told you to save you the time Marthyn! As soon as you said which song I knew exactly what we were getting into lmao! I saw the absolute war zone in the comments section as well! 8:04 Disappointed Marthyn 🤣
Daray is an exceptionally talented drummer, but the heart is with the original studio version of the song. ♥ Would love a drum reaction video on the living legend "HellHammer". Thanks!
Are you already familiar with Kai Hahto? He is the present drummer of Nightwish, and technically he still is the drummer of Wintersun also. If you don't know him, I strongly suggest you to check him out: War (Meshuggah cover): ruclips.net/video/XtIzctherZc/видео.html Obey (Rotten sound): ruclips.net/video/SHoY51VCluI/видео.html Most reactors do Wintersun - Sons Of Winter And Stars (live rehearsal at Sonic Pump studios), but I think you need to watch those old "drum cams" to really see, what he is capable of. There is also drum clinic playthrough video of "sons of winter and stars" and another video where Kai explains some of the "tricks" he uses, which you probably don't see/hear if you just do that "music video".
It seems to me that in the faster sections he doesn't use a full leg motion, rather an "unconventional ankle motion". In fact, he is so relaxed at that speed that the movement of the ankle must play a role in the stroke generation. Rather it could be something between an ankle motion and a heel toe with alternating feet (like Wanja "Nechtan" Gröger does). Does anyone think like me?
I just love these automatic subtitles. "tight 60 notes with his feet." Damn, no wonder he's playing with Dimmu Borgir! Anyway, Marthyn, I really enjoy your videos! Fun and educational. Keep going! Cheers from Finland!
You can pull it off! With a swivel motion! I’ve been playing for over 30 years and was heal and toe guy! But about 5-6 years ago I started the swivel technique and it really works !
In Wacken 2007 Live DVD, you can hear their drummer nailing this part with 32th notes!! Not sure, if it was Hellhammer or Tony Laureano, who was playing there..
I was there, it was Tony! And I was so happy when I realised after the first minutes that it`s not Hellhammer, but Laureano! I think he is better than Hellhammer. I think they played just a few shows with Hellhammer live.If I remember right,he had an injury shortly after the recording for basically the whole time in the band!
I'm wondering if Hellhammer hasn't recorded his part with double strokes technic ? And we don't have to forget that it's easy to edit in studio so... For me, Daray totally succeed his part and he s a really really good and amazing drummer. Thx for your reacts Marthyn !
For as simple as it seems the full leg motion is something I always seem have a lot of issues with, wears me out quick. But I'm working on it. There is a song by Vader, Blood of Kingu that has medium tempo DB through the whole thing, hell of a work out but I love playing along to that one, works on them hip flexors!
I haven't played to that level but if you go to a gig to be the music police then you might want to think again why you pay for that ticket.Hellhammer uses doubles on the bass drums as far as I know,so why not ask let's say Morotti what he things? Just b4 the 1st lockdown I went to see Belphegor with Suffocation live and the Belphegor guy didn't play some parts like the albums either,he did the same thing, used 16th triplets.Did anyone else than a few drummers noticed? NO!Did we have a great time? YES.We don't have to be totally nerdy all the time I think. Its just me, and enjoy.Just a few thoughts.I wish I had such a gig 😄
As a person who both hasn't played live and hasn't touched drums for like 5 years, it's impressive to see extreme metal drummers in those outfits even attempt to play on a certain tempo. I always imagined BM drummers to wear comfortable shoes, since their quite invisible behind the kit, so that they could match the recorded tempo/sound, but imo it's not that of a problem. As you said, he is tight, not sloppy which is the most important thing to me, while attending a live show like this. That being said, Daray used to play with Czarcie Kopyto, being one of the first to promote their pedals. I might be wrong but he admitted in an interview that he had to change them for live performances because didn't find them comfortable with the outfit. You can see him play them in some Abrahadabra videos though
Honestly I dig both ways, as far as production and sound I love In Sorte Diaboli, but he did an excellent job of doing this live, watching that clean motion and perfect timing near the end where he was moving between snare and ride will never not look cool as hell to me ☺
With those boots, well, it´s difficult. I couldn´t do that. I mostly play full leg motion and i see similarities when i play those kind of parts. A weakness i unfortunately have sometimes. I don´t think he sucks, he´s pretty good and maybe he had a bad day, who knows. BTW. i played at Hellfest in 2012 ;) it was great tho.
I agree. When I first heard those 32nd notes I never thought it sounded right anyway within the song. Hellhammer played heel and toe to do it and Daray, along with a load more drummers don’t play that style.
Hey Marthyn man, thanks a lot for this amazing video as always! Tony Laureano played this track at Wacken once with Dimmu, and it came out really fast. Do you want to check it out? I can send you the link if you like. Take care , cheers!
Daray is of course an outstanding drummer, he has immortalized his footprint forever with the Eonian album. All in all, I even think that Dimmu only founded themselves to create this album at some point. It IS the point on the "i" in their history. Hellhammer couldn't and shouldn't have recorded this album, he comes from another sphere in black metal. Despite all the praise for Daray, you have to be honest enough to say that he cannot be compared to a Nick Barker in his prime. Nick played the most unplayable Dimmu songs purely from drumming. p.s. Personal Note, you have really good stuff online, good tipps I also use for my training. To my background, I'm drummer of a bavarian semi pro cover metal Band since 1994, 47years, far above 1000 shows with audience between 200-18.000, but I call myself a lifelong student. Well, hold the position🍀🥁🤝🏼
Marthyn i really like the Standpoint for crazy nuts fast part. one thing needs to called up..when hellhammer played the part in the studio i dont think heever played in those boots. Let daray get this boots off and i think he will do it perfectly like it is on the album

I think you're spot on with the comment on the faster double bass stuff. There's no shame in not being able to play 16th at 300 bpm. So always go for what you can play and keep it tight. Would you say Hellhammer played that part with double strokes? Which is cool, but it kind of wouldn't fit Daray's style for some reason, 'cause he plays loud, also with the kicks. He really stomps it out, which I like!
You should do Paul Bostaph from Slayer. That would be a very interesting video analysis. Very different style drummer. There is plenty of videos out there to checkout
Paul Bostaph never plays a proper bass drum line. He is "cheating" every freakin time on every freakin song with fast and difficult doublebass patterns
Just wondering... did Hellhammer himself pull the 32nd notes of? I remember vaguely seeing a studio documentary where he played on an E-Drumset where you've got the total freedom in the editing procedure (although you can achieve these results with acoustic drum recordings, too...).
I've seen Dimmu with Jan and it was just bad (he said that there was not a lot he could hear in monitor...it was a festival so yeah...). He is one of my most inspirational drummers (at least with his other projects Arcturus and Winds...), but he need his comfort to perform well, so I think that he too would switch to triplets because I think that this is just pure studio performance.
Hellhammer used 2 dual pedals for that part, so I wouldnt blame Daray for not hitting those 300 bpm:s :) Fun fact: I have the exact pair of ddrum triggers Hellhammer used for this recording in studio Fredman many years ago!
Has anyone actually seen Hellhammer play this live? Cause he was always fixing his stuff back in the day. Hell hammer is not what everyone thinks he is
@@juuhaa1 I didn't know Hellhammer learned heel/toe. Wich kinda makes it even less impressive. Because I have always seen him using singles. While he is hitting high speeds, he is only hitting those speeds for short bursts. Wich is nothing compared to other heel/toe players. I have no issue with heel/toe players. But, in this particular case I thought we were speaking on single strokes. My irritation comes with Hellhammer fans more than himself. He is a pioneer of his genre. And that's cool and fine. But, I have literally seen and heard people say he is the best drummer in metal. I suppose that's really truly subjective? I usually rate drummers in their genre of music. I really hate when people say he has a jazz background. Hell no he doesn't. It's like his fan Boys just make up things. And think if they say it enough times it's true. I mean no disrespect to you. Just having a conversation. I know this turned out to be a diatribe. I'm just simply preparing for the fan boy attacks that are coming. Thanks for the videos. I enjoyed both of them.
ive been wanted to see and cover of annihilation by the hands of god and explain e few things aboud the song that also played by joey jordison in road runner united... cheers and hi from Penang Malaysia
Marthyn, I totally agree with you, I prefer 16 notes tight, than a messy, floppy soup... I was really disappointed the first I saw it, BUT, not everyone can be the great master, HellHammer, who really triggered me to become drummer. First of all, on studio, you can play everything you want, as tight as possible like a machine gun, thanks to computer, but on stage, even for HellHammer, that's another business. Second point, you got a Big burden to carry on your shoulders when you come in Dimmu's band right after him, so I forgive for that. At the beginning Daray was not exceptionnal, but with years and tours, he get really better, so for me, that's all matter. Ho ! And he's Polish, like my origins, so I'm a lil' pride for that 😁. Thanks a lot for this video my dude ! See ya next time, and take care 😉
Nick Barker was by far Dimmu's best drummer overall. He had the most distinct and memorable style. The parts he wrote were so tasteful and fit so well with the music. He is also an accurate and clean player and the drum sound on Puritanical is awesome. Dimmu was great back then (1995 - 2003). I don't even recognize them now. Their best lineup was Shagrath, Silenoz, Astennu, Vortex, Mustis and Nick.
Safe in a live situation is always better. It would be cool if you could react to Dirk verbeurens Asphyxiate playthrough from meinl festival: ruclips.net/video/7T4oDSgELQU/видео.html or anything with Janne Jaloma :)
Didn't they have to help Hellhammer off the throne after recording that part lol! Tight is better then shit, and its not like it was him that recorded it in the first place. It's only something us nerds would know regardless, peace!
Im not an expert, just interessted! I think he is an excellent drummer and the fact that so many bands take him for studio work or as tour musician speaks for itself. There are many good drummers out there and they wouldnt work with him if he wasnt somewhere at the top of the foodchain! I think it`s never a shame if a drummer cant replicate a "made-to-measure" thing for another drummer with a certain skill set. Especially as a freelancer, working with 3 4 different bands at the same time. What should he do? Learn a whole different style because with the technique he uses and perfectionized for his style, he lacks some bps in a 10 seconds sequence of a probably 20 hrs reportoire he can play?
I'd challenge the average audience member to try and discern between 16th note triplets and 32nd notes at those speeds. In music like this the tight triplets are going to sound "faster" than sloppy, floating 32nds.
Hi. Could someone please translate into Polish what are "subdivisions"? I was looking for a translation in the context of music/drumming but found nothing. Thank you. greetings from Poland :)
The reason anyone attends live shows is to get the live “feel” of the band. Playing exactly like the album is not the experience someone should try to attain when at a LIVE show. Unless its a band like Dream Theater, I would not expect any band to play note from not what is played on album. Otherwise, stay home and watch drum covers of that band… Btw, I think how he played it was perfectly fine.
Most black metal fans I know can't read sheet music, but most death metal fans I know are *very* demanding when it comes to live performances. I side with live performances being practical, but I can understand the other point of view, especially for such a well-known, commercial band.

How many drummers can even play single strokes at 300bpm without those boots?
This is your most metal outfit to date. 😆
😂
Daray’s hands are so insane and he’s so tight - I wouldn’t care at all - he holds it together like a robot - he’s tighter than hell hammer
Hellhammer is so overrated.
Daray is underrated. Dimmu is one of the greatest live acts and Daray does the job perfectly.

@@TheSentinel909 I totally disagree with you, sorry. Eugene can do all the parts around 110-115% 🤣🤣🤣

would you consider reviewing Mario Duplantier of Gojira? i'd say the live video for "where dragons dwell" but idk if there's a drum cam for that song.
Could you please react to Stormblast playing stuff with Infernal War? Such an interesting technique and drum setup.
You just have to look into Tomas Haake of the band Meshuggah he is an absolute beast drummer.
Dry is tight... 😉😂
Yes i know he says Daray dont get butthurt
150bpm. 16ths. heel toe. Boom :)
Hellhammer used 2 dual pedals for that part, so I wouldnt blame Daray for not hitting those 300 bpm:s :)
Fun fact: I have the exact pair of ddrum triggers Hellhammer used for this recording in studio Fredman many years ago!
Has anyone actually seen Hellhammer play this live? Cause he was always fixing his stuff back in the day. Hell hammer is not what everyone thinks he is
Agreed. I've seen Hellhammer swap 16th notes for triplets quite often.

@Chaos Inception I believe he does it with double strokes.
ive been wanted to see and cover of annihilation by the hands of god and explain e few things aboud the song that also played by joey jordison in road runner united... cheers and hi from Penang Malaysia
Daray is great-check Masachist ;) btw-does he still playing? I heard he quit playing...://
What what what??? You played at Hellfest??? With Belphegor? :O
who gives a fuck if he is faster or not.
he is very good at the end
How about a video about Jon Rice?
Marthyn👍 I think you will like this. Alfonso Mocerino just put out another Dimmu cover. 🤘🤘 Thank you
Nick Barker was by far Dimmu's best drummer overall.
At how many bpms was that drink mixed at?
Did helhammer really recorded 32nd at 150 or computer did?
Hellhammer... One and only
I want those boots hell maybe the outfit
Lets get that Neil Peart react
Hey Martin!! have a look to Luana Dametto from Crypta ... cheers from Mexico!
Can you do a reaction video on Hellhammer of Mayhem ?
Safe in a live situation is always better. It would be cool if you could react to Dirk verbeurens Asphyxiate playthrough from meinl festival: ruclips.net/video/7T4oDSgELQU/видео.html or anything with Janne Jaloma :)
React to Daniel Erlandsson from Arch Enemy.
Errlandson is boring as fuk
Should have a look at Evgeny Novikov's drumming
I'd challenge the average audience member to try and discern between 16th note triplets and 32nd notes at those speeds. In music like this the tight triplets are going to sound "faster" than sloppy, floating 32nds.
Please react to Dirk Verbeuren
Hi. Could someone please translate into Polish what are "subdivisions"? I was looking for a translation in the context of music/drumming but found nothing. Thank you. greetings from Poland :)
@Michał Żelechowski Ok. Dzięki wielkie kolego!
The reason anyone attends live shows is to get the live “feel” of the band. Playing exactly like the album is not the experience someone should try to attain when at a LIVE show. Unless its a band like Dream Theater, I would not expect any band to play note from not what is played on album. Otherwise, stay home and watch drum covers of that band… Btw, I think how he played it was perfectly fine.
seems to me like 90% of people attend live shows to talk to their friends and get drunk.
@@auto1nfanticid3 ..and they keep their f*King phone in the air,big as a flat screen tv,filming the whole consert...
Most black metal fans I know can't read sheet music, but most death metal fans I know are *very* demanding when it comes to live performances. I side with live performances being practical, but I can understand the other point of view, especially for such a well-known, commercial band.
We want helhammer!!!
Omg you didn't start with alrighty....
Aquiles Priester and Daniel Erlandsson to the list
Meh
I would like to see tony laureano join the drum academy.
React Tobias Schuler from Der Weg Einer Freiheit🤘🏼
I think he should talk to Shaggy about not wearing them boots.
Why haven't you posted in over a month!??
