I live on my 47 foot sailboat and fix sailboats for a living. You have done fantastic and inspiring work. The video was riveting and a tribute to your skills, ingenuity, craftsmanship and perseverance, and all for reasonable cost. Totally inspirational as was your rescue from on the rocks in Georgia in another video. I take my hat off to you Sir! Well done!
Nice job. It brought me old memories back when I was 24 years old (1984) and decide to built a fishing boat 44' by 10' and after Two years of hard work it was in the water. I'm From Puerto Montt Chile. Now living 28 Years in USA and thinking going back to the blue soon
Amazing. Reading through the comments it was time well spent given how much she has given you. I came here via the South Georgia video. I can't believe after all your hard work work, a couple of plastic cable ties almost undid it all.
A real artisan at work. True passion and love for the results. I am in awe and love your channel. I am learning and developing my skills refurbishing my 1970 Alberg 30 and looking to world adventures this summer. Fun, health and adventure ahead 😄😁😃
Nelson is where Lynda and I grew up and spent 3 years in the same class at school together. Our lives have a background in the marine industry. Having accomplished so much with our sailing background, when friends and businesses realized that the refit was about sailing Windora to extreme destinations and not about making money the discounted parts and materials were unbelievable. In their eyes we were living what they dreamed of accomplishing. All the best Phil and Lynda
You must be so pleased with the outcome and so lucky to have good friends to help you. Wish you good luck for the future and lots of happiness sailing 👍
We happen to live in a community of friends and people where you do a job for someone, money never comes into it, you help them, they help you. Because we live other people's dream, they wanted to be part of it. Phil and Lynda
A fantastic rebuild. Did you consider upgrading the CQR anchors to something more modern? During our 5 year circumnavigation, CQR anchors were a common factor in draggings.
I never got round to building a new anchor, Windora has such a large 4 blade prop 28"x17" driven by a powerful 6b cummins that when you back down on the anchor you definitely know when it is dug in. Plus the anchor is attached to 120 metre's of 1/2" chain. Being a CQR it always needs an extra 10 metre's to set. If we waited to get every bit of gear right we would be too old to go sailing. Phil and Lynda
We built our steel boat IRON MISTRESS from a bare hull and deck and sailed her around the world and spent 2 years in NZ. Along the way so we could appreciate the work , sacrifice and drive for you to complete this vision! Incredible- all these young you tubers could learn a whole lot from your craftsmanship and knowledge base
Windora's design is very capable of taking good care of her pilothouse. Athol Burns designed over 700 vessels in his lifetime most of them built for extreme conditions in the Cook Strait. Plus we have been in seastates most sailers would only not want to dream about. Phil
Just came across this well-done video. Given that you sail in ice-infested waters, can you shed more light (possibly another video) on why and how a wooden boat with fibreglass cladding (as you did) is a good approach (Erebus was, after all, made of wood.... but there must be some caveats dealing with internal structure and strength?) (I did see the video of the grounding in South Georgia and wondered how a fibreglass vessel would have withstood that pounding without puncturing the hull). I am intrigued!
In all my years spent around the world looking on thousands of wooden vessels I have never found any boat built this strong. Often someone would tell me they have a strongly built vessel until they visit Windora. Phil
Very impressive in fact unbelievable and what a boat as a result. Is she available for sale? Total cost $90,000 NZD + (6000 hours at $70 per hour in 2008) $420,000 = $510,000 total refit cost.
Sorry not for sale, having sailed Windora twice around the world, money cannot compensate for what she has given to us. Windora has always been a very sought after vessel and continues to open many doors for us. Phil and Lynda
If you gave me the instructions I could probably do that work - the only thing is it would take me about 60 years and be the sum total of my life's work. Congratulations to you both for a magnificent project.
Lynda and I had over 10 years of sailing Windora to think about all the changes, so during the refit all we had to do was work because the thinking was all ready done. Phil and Lynda
Amazing, my hats off to you for your vision, patience and skill. She's a beautiful yatch and I'm sure she'll take good care of you. It's also nice knowing you know every square inch of your vessel
Impressive! What were your most important improvements? I mean, always when I am sailing I think of many things that 'someday I will make better'. I guess you had a long list of improvements. For me the lowered deck 'kuip' as we call that in Dutch. It is the best thing you did I think. But I am curious about all those little things you improved.
What a fantastic yacht. You did a wonderful job on the refit. I hope I come across you in some far away cruising anchorage to complement you in person on this amazing project and admire Windora in person. Well Done!!
I am in major refit mode right now, and seeing your work gives me a bit more gas in the tank. I am almost done. My avatar is my 47' Ed Monk Sr. designed cutter rig. I have rebuilt almost every moving and mechanical part. Taken off every piece of deck hardware. Stripped the mast and painted, with all new standing and running rigging… you know the story! But, I am very interested in your homebuilt prop generator. Is there anyway you can divulge a bit more information on that? Could I contact you through email? Thanks, and gorgeous job!
Yachtwindora@hotmail.com The prop shaft alternator is 400mm to a 50mm - 8 to 1 ratio. Produces 20amps at 5 knots and 35 at 7 knots. Email me with any questions
Yes, self draining. In all our years of sailing we have definitely put it to the test and we have never had green water on deck or in the cockpit. Windora's displacement is 21 tonnes, the cockpit holds less than 1 tonne, its wouldn't be enough to have much effect. It's difficult to get across to people the seaworthiness of this vessel. Athol Burns had a reputation for extremely seaworthy vessel designs for NZ conditions, especially Cook Strait. Phil

Even though the refit was 11 years ago we are still amazed at how beautiful it is sitting down in the saloon, especially in the evenings with the wood glowing and the heater keeping us snug and warm when it's chilly outside.

very well done. Thank you for sharing.
Does wrapping the hull in fiberglass over wood cause issues with the wood hull drying out over time and pulling away from the fiberglass?
Windora was glassed in epoxy when first built and never had any issues
