  • Procedure for application and removal of transparent film wound dressing.
    To Apply:
    1. Clean wound with normal saline or prescribed cleanser.
    2. Pat the tissue surrounding the wound dry with a 4 x 4. Allow to dry prior to applying the dressing
    3. Remove gloves, wash hands, apply new gloves.
    4. Clean surrounding tissue with alcohol pad. This is known as defatting the skin, which will help the dressing adhere better.
    5. Apply liquid barrier film to periwound area to protect and assist with adhesion.
    6. For Deep wounds apply wound filler or packing materials as needed. (See video "How to Pack a Wound at • Video )
    7. Peel the liner from the dressing, exposing the adhesive surface.
    8. View the wound site through the film and center the dressing over the wound. Do not stretch the dressing during application.
    9. Smooth the dressing in place from center outward.
    10. The dressing should be at least 1 inch larger than the wound. Check individual manufacturer recommendations as some require a 2 inch border.
    To Remove:
    1. Lift one corner of the dressing and stretch horizontal along the skin surface.
    2. Continue stretching from the edges toward the center.
    3. When two sides of the dressing are lifting, grasp both sides and stretch horizontal and parallel to the skin until the entire dressing lifts.

Removing the dressing by stretching and pulling towards you is a great way to sling blood and purulent into your face. I sure hope people are using masks and protective glasses when performing this technique. Usually it is advised to free the entire perimeter and then gently lift off to make sure skin is not adhered to the dressing.

I got a rash when applying tegaderm on my stomach for an HRT patch, but from what I can gather, it was probably because of all of the folds, compression, and air gaps within the transparent dressing. I found better luck with kineseotape but I'm willing to give tegaderm another shot

So is this for an open wound? Or something recovering!? When would you use one of these specifically?
