  • ❤️generations all in a cabin. the media doesn’t want you to see us in nature....but here we are anyway. the appreciation of earth, access to the outdoors is a human right we need to exercise. so many mental and physical conditions are "healed" with sunlight...grounding...walking...nature....I started thinking about buying land in Utah...
In this vlog we discuss homeschooling a bit, but mostly just chill outside with family.
The girls learned what hiking with granddaddy is really like: “Granddaddy is really funny. He should have a RUclips channel!” Luckily the kids were all well fed thanks to our dad being there, and the kids were able to get some words of wisdom. I lost a lot of photos on this trip; there’s no reception in most parts of the park and my phone would take photos and delete them. But I’m glad we have a few and the memories will always be there!

This is so amazing and wholesome. I love that the girls have little brown dolls in their backpack. Love that they’re learning to be proud of who they are. What a wonderful family. All the kids are amazing.

It was cold on our trip. It was so cold at night, that a woman actually died of hypothermia a couple days after we were there. I do not like being cold, so I’ve purchased high quality outdoor clothing that served me well in other cold environments.
The first thing you need is a base layer, you most likely know them as longjohns. But to stay warm, make sure this layer is not cotton. Then, you need really warm socks, but if you’re hiking you don’t want them to be so warm that your feet start to sweat, because then your feet will be cold.
A hat is one of the most important things, you lose heat through your head, so a nice beanie that covers your ears is essential.
Even though I didn’t wear gloves for most of the hike, children get colder faster, so make sure you have some light gloves for them as well.
A good pair of hiking boots is also important. Sprained ankles are apparently common when amateurs go out hiking, a little slip and you’ll have a sprain. there are always sales on really nice hiking boots off-season.
So those items generally keep the girls and myself really warm, but since Zion can get cold unexpectedly, especially out of the sun, there are two more layers you need: fleece pants if you’re not planning on getting wet - got a cheap pair for six dollars at target and they worked perfectly; a windbreaker, then outer layer coat/jacket. Many coats have a wind breaking layer. for the day hike, the girls were pretty warm while hiking in the smart wool base layer, so they just wore a fleece Patagonia jacket over the base layer.

Akeeba, it's so obvious how well you have worked with the girls with proper enunciation that is also free of so much of the jargon and idiosyncratic ways and crutch words that most people learn and practice at home and within friend groups. I really enjoy hearing them articulate themselves.

It's great that you have so many nice experiences with your family. Even more to have it documented, where you can go back and experience it again.

Excerpts: Lack of transportation to national parks and the cost of visiting were cited as the top reasons people -- especially Black and Hispanic Americans -- don't visit them more often, according to the study. Twice as many black and Hispanic Americans said they don't know what to do in national parks than whites. When asked if they share the same interests as people who visit national parks, 34% of Black respondents and 27% of Hispanics said no, compared with only 11% of whites.
Advocates for diversifying the outdoors say stereotypes around who enjoys camping and hiking create a big barrier: what they wear, what gear they have and even when they do it. Combined with attitudes that people do outdoor activities to relieve stress has made it difficult to have tough conversations about race.
"When I'm walking to work with park rangers or with other campers and hikers who treat me in some sort of way that make me feel unwelcome, that make me feel unsafe, that is startling," Tariq said. "And that goes unchecked because there's, there's just no channel for us to be able to challenge that in such remote places."
Carolyn Finney, a storyteller and cultural geographer whose book "Black Faces, White Spaces" focuses on African Americans' relationship to the outdoors said the dominant narrative around national parks doesn't include that they were considered primarily with white visitors in mind.
She said that despite the value of the ideas that conceptualized the National Park Service and laid the groundwork for the modern environmental movement in the early 1900s, figures like John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt did not consider how those spaces would include people of color because they were actively segregated at the time. And some figures close to the conservation movement like Madison Grant, who founded organizations like the Bronx Zoo, espoused actively racist ideologies.
Many people of color say that history of the parks is another psychological barrier white Americans don't have to face.
"Historically, in the South, in particular, many atrocious things that happened to Black people were in the woods," said Frank Peterman, an outdoors enthusiast who began visiting the national parks with his wife Audrey 25 years ago.

Thank you for this very considerate commentary. I grew up going camping with my aunt who was married to a Brit. Being in that environment with him only gave us access to the idea of camping. The nuances of prejudices/racial discrimination was still blatantly obvious when we left our individual camp site.
