Get BIGGER Bites with Tiny BASS FISHING FROGS (Seth Feider)

  • Hollow body frogs are one of the most consistent topwater baits during the bass post-spawn period, but choosing the right frog for the situation has a significant impact on success. Seth Feider teaches a lesson on choosing the right frog for the job, with an emphasis on smaller-sized frogs fished on lighter rods and braided line when faced with moderate- to sparse cover or clear water.
Seth reaches for a 2-1/2 inch frog the majority of the time for the simple reason that bass of all sizes eat it -- you get more bites overall without sacrificing the big eats. On top of that, a compact bait produces higher hooking percentages and deeper hooking so long as it’s equipped with a high-end hook. That said, Seth also explains when to step up to a 3-inch or larger frog.
    TACKLE USED:
    • Terminator Walking Frog Jr (2 1/2 inch): wired2.fish/3wAnVeG
    • Daiwa Taula Elite Casting Rod, 7'1" Heavy: wired2.fish/3wkUSwG
    • Daiwa Tatula SV TWS Casting Reel, 8.1:1: wired2.fish/3yGgo0u
    • Sufix 832 Braided Line Lo-Vis Green, 30-pound: wired2.fish/3yHx1ZP
When it comes to color, Feider shares his 4 go-to colors depending on the forage and water clarity, with a bluegill pattern being his all-around favorite. In his opinion, hollow body frogs perform best when bass are feeding on bluegills, so he matches the food. Feider wraps it up with a discussion on why he favors shorter rods in the low 7-foot range paired with a fast reel and 30-pound braid over the more common meat sticks with 65-pound braid.

Seth: Sees a 6” space 40 feet away. Tosses a frog right in the middle every time.
Me: Sees a 4 foot space 15 feet away. Frog ends up in a tree 5 feet above the water and 3 feet to the left of my target. After 15 minutes of fumbling around I cut the line and give up on a $6 lure. #realisticfishing

Would rather lose a small one from a hard hookset and heavy line than not be able to winch a big one in that is tangled in weeds. Not my biggest fish but had a 4lber on a frog early this year that I brought in with another 4lbs of veggies. If my drag wasn't locked it would have def been slipping the whole time. Casting isn't terrible either. With no wind I can cast all the way to my backing. Plenty far.
I do have a bluegill colored frog I haven't used yet. Going to give it a go this weekend.

Hey Peter, when you're pulling fish from heavy cover, getting them up on the surface is the best case scenario for landing the fish. If you give them a chance to dive back into the thick weeds like Seth was fishing, you risk losing the fish. Once you get them skipping, they're yours. Thanks for the comment and for tuning in!

100% on two things…smaller frogs and bluegill pattern. The small terminators and the junior pad crasher bluegill colors are absolutely dynamite. About 80% of my frog fishing each year will consist of just those two baits. They’ll catch the frog monsters you’re chasing but they’ll also catch the 2lbers that might be a little gunshy about hitting a bigger frog. Frog is kind of a misleading term for what these baits imitate…to me, it’s always been bluegill struggling on the surface and small rodents as well as frogs

Wired2Fish it actually is my favorite way to fish, nothing is more exciting. Its my hook up percentage that leads to zero fish caught.
