Man i used to play a ton of World Heroes 2 back in the day, there was a grocery store across the street from my elementary school that had a Neo Geo machine with World Heroes 2, Fatal Fury Special, Street Hoop, and Wind Jammers. Every day after school i'd walk over to the store and play World Heroes 2 and Fatal Fury Special until i ran out of quarters and then i'd walk home. Ahhh sweet memories of the 90's man. That game brings me a ton of nostalgia. I will say tho that World Heroes Perfect is easily the best in the series, it perfectly nailed the gameplay and mechanics, it's an underrated gem in my opinion. Anyway, great video man!
Yeah, but no 1 here. Who a fan of World Heroes gets confused with *Ryoko* ? At first, I thought she was the same chic from *Data East Fighter's History* Ryoko
So just what was the appeal of World Heroes? I can say it in four words: *Not Street Fighter 2.* You have to understand what the arcade scene looked line in '92. Street Fighter 2 was omnipresent and before long its dominance of the arcades would become downright suffocating. Everyone talked about it. All the magazines covered it. All the guides covered it. Every punch and kick and bit and pixel was overanalyzed to death. And the whole culture surrounding it was so self-serious, so harsh. (I couldn't even begin to count the cheating accusations.) Did I mention that it was _super hard to get good at?_ I hadn't struggled so much since the days of trackballs. The time was ripe for something colorful, weird, a little ridiculous, and thoroughly nonserious, but also more accessible, more forgiving, easier to get down. A lot of players liked the World Heroes a _whole_ lot. And then 2 came along and it just flat-out _blew up._ Seriously, we're talking early Mortal Kombat level of popularity here. The last two didn't quite reach that level, but they were interesting ideas in their own right. In the end, the fact that this property wasn't afraid to be totally weird and shameless is why we remember it today. I actually considered it the superior alternative to Art of Fighting (inconsistent and clunky) and Fighter's History (poor man's SF2).
Dude I'm SO HAPPY someone remembered this game and decided to do an awesome video about it. Thank you!! This was one of my favorite games wayyy back when!!
There exists an even more obscure Neo Geo fighting game from ADK - Ninja Masters. It's a quite fast paced, weapon based FTG with very tight, fluid, combo friendly gameplay and well done rural Japan atmosphere, I recommend to give it a try!
*Ninja Master's* is very underrated It is a shame that it wasn't a success when it came. It released in 1996, it had to compete against The King of Fighters 96 and Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 2 I would love to see Ninja Master's characters in Samurai Shodown. My favorite characters are Karasu, Natsume and Kasumi. At least ADK left with their magnum opus, Twinkle Star Sprites.
Alpha Denshi/ADK really loved ninjas 🥷 They made Ninja Combat, Ninja Commando, Ninja Master's. Not to mention the ninja transformation in Magician Lord, and Hanzo and Fuuma from World Heroes.
Wait so the hardest boss in fighting game history was not from world heroes darn I never thought I was confusing the General for freakin Inspector Brocken.
World Heroes may not have been a very popular series. And yes, only four games were ever made to its name. And I don't think there's going to be a new World Heroes game anytime soon. But what matters more is that it was a huge part of my childhood. I love this series just as much as I love Street Fighter II, Samurai Showdown, and KOF. And while World Heroes may never be as big a name as those series, it will always have a special place in my heart. Its obscurity only makes it more special to me. Also, there was a manga based on World Heroes in recent years.
That manga was written by Kimitoshi Yokoo, who was the planner and one of the character designers(Mr. Yokoo designed Rasputin, Mudman and Jack) of World Heroes.
I like the World Heroes games. They can't be seen as Street Fighter 2 clones, because there are different mechanics like double jumps, dashes, projectile reflection and more. Also the SNES ports of WH 1&2 are decent FTGs (forget the Genesis version of WH 1).
I can't blame people for lumping the first game in with the SF2 clones at the time considering the sheer volume, but yeah it really does the series a disservice to slap that label on it in retrospect
In North America SNK isn't as big or widely known unlike capcom, marvel comics , dc comics, Nintendo , Disney, nickleodeon or cartoon network. However in asia and south America / central America snk is big .
i played world heroes perfect so damn much that i used to beat all random challengers in one coin, my best winning streak was 62.. n i would play with any player in the game, knew all the combos n special moves.. i just loved this game.. we definitely need a new part..
Imagine what newcomers the next WH game would have: Ones based on Al Capone, Billy the Kid, Chuck Norris, Dwayne Johnson, Jackie Chan, Jeffrey Dahmer, Michael Jackson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Pogo the Clown, Ramses III, Shaq O'Neal, Siegfried Fischbacher, Tom Cruise, Vlad Dracula, Sinbad the Sailor, etc.
I was looking for information of these games, found that and this great channel. You DEFINITELY deserve more subscribers and I became a subscriber. Like you have QUALITY videos
The best World Heroes retrospective video on YT From time to time I watch it again 😄 5:13-5:22 My favorite line in this video 😆✌️ 7:25 You forgot to mention that Geegus (Gelatinous Execute and Exterminate Genotype Ultimate Soldier) is based on the T-1000 from Terminator 2 Also, "Damned" is not a mad scientist, that is the name of a secret evil organization. 8:52-9:05 I didn't know Death Match is the canon mode 😮 In other words Dr. Brown is the true villain in the original game xD 10:22 I don't blame you. Shura (generic Muay Thai character) is the definition of plain 😒 Even the other World Heroes characters call him plain (or sober). As you can see in win quotes against Shura in the japanese version of World Heroes Perfect and in ADK World (a japanese exclusive Minigame compilation for the Neo Geo CD) Even the developers joke about how plain Shura is 😂 11:25 Not to mention that Neo Geegus has the best win quote in all the World Heroes series. Only in WH2 arcade version. "The strong rule. The winners are just. That is my belief. But then again, I think Democrats can save America" Best win quote ever! 10/10 🤣 11:34 Actually in WH2, he was just called DIO (Direction of Identity and Operation-system) After his defeat he became NEO DIO after absorbing Neo Geegus. And as many people have said, his design is based on Baoh and has Dio Brando's lines. Both characters were made by the same mangaka. 14:05 Unlike the teams and Hanzo (boss), Captain Kidd is NOT a clone made by Zeus. Kidd was upset that they didn't invited him to Zeus's tournament, not knowing that the tournament was just a trap to lure the heroes. Even Zeus didn't expect Kidd's intrusion. 16:41-16:53 There are fates worse than death... LMAO that reaction is priceless. You forgot to mention about the secret character of World Heroes Perfect, Son Gokuu. Fuuma was also playable in Aggressors of Dark Kombat/GANGAN. The game Kisarah Westfield came from, the same highschool girl who appears in Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
"Geegus" and "Dio" were _acronyms?_ In English? Holy crap. I mean, kinda forced, but to to think ADK actually took the trouble to make those names actually _mean_ something is pretty wild. I thought Dio was based on one of the Pillar Men from Jojo. I looked up Baoh just now, and yeah, _dead_ ringer, right down to the arm blades. Both series were made by the same artist, so the resemblance is no surprise. And I'm sorry, but it is just _weird_ that a loud, cocky punk with a wild high-flying style is the "plain one". In a game with flippin' _Hanzo,_ for crying out loud.
15:10 Zeus is a mix of Souther and Raoh from Fist of the North Star. He also reminds me of Brakus from the Movie Best of the Best 2 from the early 90s and there a picture of Brakus doing a pose like Zeus dose in World Heroes Perfect Character select screen.
I do remember that particular art being on the old SNK Japanese site, I remember being in high school looking up kof stuff &coming across it, don't know if it is there anymore, maybe @fightersgeneration has it.
Funny how the SNES port of World Heroes 2 made the game a lot more fair and it had its fair share of updates (iirc: Geegus does some original attacks of his own and the bosses are unlockable)
I played it. While inferior to the original on a technical level (all the Neo Geo ports were to some extent), it was more balanced, and _much_ easier for a teenager without fabulous reflexes to grasp. The best part was that it was possible to map light and hard to different buttons; combined with a rapid fire controller, this made it easy to put the pressure on and win throw battles (by far the strategy that worked the best for me, especially against Dio).
Dude the SNES version was so badass! While the combo system was sadly nonexistent (the limbs were too short), they gave you some neat bonuses like six colors per fighter, and for the ninjas the dragon’s color would reflect your color choice (on their dragon uppercuts). But probably best of all was the option to change the energy bar in the death match mode to be normal and not that seesaw BS lol. It was far from a perfect port but damn did I love it and played the ever living hell outta it back in the day almost 30 years ago!
I played WH2 but was always confused about Jet and Perfect, thanks for clearing that up. While I'm not sure if you have, you might be interested in Eternal Champion.
World Heroes Perfect is most certainly one of the top five SNK/ADK fighting games of the '90s (and mind that those companies spewed like thousand 1-on-1 fighters during the decade) and probably the most underrated one. Like you said: everybody talks only about KoF, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown and, to a lesser extent, Art of Fighting. The truth is that WHP beats at least dozen titles in KoF series; ALL of the Fatal Fury entries (except Garou:MotW); ALMOST all of the SamShos and definitely every game in AoF franchise. WHP = appealing roster, simple yet impressive mechanics, incredibly satisfying supers/desperations (when landed, of course), ton of hidden stuff... If one classic fighter needs modern revival/sequel, it's WH, hands down.
Also Kim is the first fighting game character to be based on Bruce Lee. World Heroes debuted in July 1992, beating out Liu Kang (August 1992) and Fei Long (September 1993).
Great video mate. Played WH2 in the Arcade back in the day. I remember losiing against Dio. Then I played with Dragon and was convinced I would beat Dio when he jumped with the super fast Dragon jump kick from Dragon. The fight comes, Dio jumps, I send in the Dragon kick... and Dio easily strikes me in the air, which no other character could do. I could never defeat him. Ah the memories. THANKS!
Man, thank you for reviewing this underrated franchise! I just bought Perfect, which kicks a lot of ass! Lets hope we'll see it either get a brand new game or exactly like what we heard ya say at the very end, a World Heroes team for King of Fighters, someday!
I never played this much, but World Heroes did capture my imagination back in the day. I also thin that it doesn't get nearly the credit that it deserves. It was one of the best fighting games of its day, and some things that you may think of as cliche at this point were actually innovative at the time. Just as one example, a boss who can change into other characters. World Heroes came out BEFORE Mortal Kombat and Shang Tsung. While its liquid metal look did come a year after Terminator 2, it was before Virtua Fighter and Dural. I also don't think such a Death Match had been done before, either. So although it took a ton from Street Fighter II, it also had a lot of cool ideas and I really like the look, including the vividness of its stages and the distinctiveness of its characters.
I actually thought you'd mention the World Heroes Tag Battle fan game that's actually being made by one of the old developers by themselves. Every know and then they post a link and there was a tournament for it a while back.
Don't worry man, I also like Brocken. Brocken Jr. is my favorite character in Kinnikuman. 4:55 As a Kinnikuman fan, I totally I agree with this statement 👍😁 But seriously, I don't mind characters being stereotypes especially if they are likeable, look cool or grown as characters. 19:20 Hey! SNK Heroikes is fun! I am not joking. In terms of gameplay is actually the most original fighting game SNK has made in recent years. Also, I like fanservice. I am a simple guy, I like waifus especially in sexy costumes 😊
I played WH 1 and 2 in the arcade back in the day but I was never really that good at them. I wasn't aware of SNK at the time but much later on I learned that they also did the Fatal Fury/Art Of Fighting/King Of Fighters series, as well as King Of The Monsters 1 and 2, Savage Reign and the Samurai Shodown series. I first played the SGEN ports of FF 2 and KOTM 2 in the mid 90s, they were both done by Takara. Of course I had also played Street Fighter II Champion Edition and Super SF II in the arcade so I knew about Capcom. Nowadays I have SSF II, KOTM 2, AOF, FF 2 for SGEN as well as FF Special and FF 3 from PSN. I also have WH, WH 2 and WH Perfect on PSN also. Theyre all great in their own ways!
This series was one of the first to show up in town with the first Neo Geo Arcade. Loved World Heroes Jet. I'm gonna have to look for that SNK fighting game, it looked super slick.
Mann super dope video bro thnks for making it I’m jus now starting my action figure collection journey n all I want is jus character backgrounds broke down n all their remake images a lot of these characters jus look really cool n We’ jus want to see em thanks again n keep ‘em comin 🦾🙏🏽
World Heroes was very popular in my country, Guatemala, back in the 90's. You could found it in any arcade store and everybody had a great time, especially in the Death Match mode. Also, in the SNK collection Vol. 01 (for PSP and PS2) you can unlock the first WH if you reach 10 trophies or something like that. It was a fun game, not too serious.
Really cool retrospective hope you do also a last blade retrospective. Btw my history teacher once showed us a picture of a nazi and it was Brocken from World heroes
Trivia. *Ninja Master's* the last fighting made by Alpha Denshi/ADK, was originally going to be a spin off of World Heroes. With an aging Hanzo Hattori as the protagonist. Kotaro Fuuma was also going to appear. Ranmaru and Nobunaga were still going to be the bosses. Sasuke Sarutobi and Yukimura Sanada were going to be secret bosses. What a shame that Ninja Master's wasn't a success. It was released in 1996, it ended up in the shadow of The King of Fighters 96 and Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 2 😔 I would have liked to see Ninja Master's characters in Samurai Shodown. My favorite characters were Karasu, Natsume and Kasumi.
My intro to WH was Neo Geo Battle Coliseum. My friend and I loved playing as Hanzo and Fuma, and their combos together were sick. We then downloaded WHP to my friend's hacked Xbox, and we played it quite a bit. My favorite characters ended up being Ryofu and Jeanne D'Arc. I really wish they KoF took in characters from WH. Or they do another NGBC.
I played WH 1 alot when it first came out on the arcade, I was like 13 or 14. It was great fun and I thrashed alot of other players. Many ppl didnt know to do combos. And there's more combos in WH2. Fun times... Growing up sucks 😞
World Heroes 2 Jet will always be my favorite of the series, especially with that actual KoF style tournament presentation with a corrupt tourney host as the final boss. Ryofu is extremely overpowered in 2 and 2 Jet, as his spear-stabbing can stunlock an opponent in KO animation. While Perfect adopted the KoF96 "Extra gauge", I didn't like that most of the super moves had needlessly complex inputs that resembled old style KoF and Fatal Fury.
@@JohnSexDD Many. An Aircraft Carrier is a floating mini city. We had everything. I've been Retired almost 20 year's. I can only imagine what they have now. 😀
Johnny Maximum did body slams long before Trent Williams body slammed K'Von Wallace during the final 4 minutes of the 4th quarter on January 29, 2023. Ironically enough, Johnny Maximum is sporting the attire of the San Fransico 49ers as his default palette. Also, DIO in WHP definitely did the MUDA MUDA thing in the character select while in WH2 he shouts WRYYY when he attacks.
There was a fighting arcade game in the 90s. I only remember there was a bummy girl and a mushroom man. All the characters seem to be based on like fantasy games and movies like Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Lord of the Rings stuff like that, you get the point. Does anyone remember this arcade?
@@azrael_III 😱 omg man this is it. Its Galaxy Fight... I was a kid, I remember that it was kind of a mushroom guy but is more like a trash can man lol haha. Thank you so much. I haven't seen this game since 1995. I looks just as I remember. Finally one of my 2 mysteries is solved. One more to go...
Did you know Dragon can air throw? Like Guile in SF2. Jet, as in its name, stunk very badly. I missed school for it though, unplayable but great. I moved on to other games by the time perfect came around, seems a cool thing to revisit in light of being an actually a proper follow up to the original, which at the time it was hysterical, Rasputin was always a perv. 2 and Jet are too crude.
At least ADK/Alpha Denshi left leaving us their magnum opus, Twinkle Star Sprites. I highly recommend it It evek got a sequel for the PS2 that sadly never left Japan 😢
Man, it seems like everyone accepts that Zeus is based on a Fist of the North Star character but can't agree on whom. Based on Punchmania/Fightingmania, I'm going with Souther.

Great video. Man....the 90s Nostalgia is real
I always wished kof had a world heros team!
The closest we got to that was in NEO·GEO Battle Coliseum.
A WH Manga does exist, I'm surprised you never brought it up.
Bwahhh 😂 “I said to play as” haa lol this was an awesome video bro thanks again 👍🏽
I actually thought you'd mention the World Heroes Tag Battle fan game that's actually being made by one of the old developers by themselves. Every know and then they post a link and there was a tournament for it a while back.
There's also a fairly good beat'em up fangame in the bor engine out there.
@@blajoker8495 I mainly mention the Fangame cause it was made by one of the World Heroes devs. Just not under SNK.
Awesome video...keep up....didnt know about the WH anime short
Don't worry man, I also like Brocken.
Brocken Jr. is my favorite character in Kinnikuman.
4:55 As a Kinnikuman fan, I totally I agree with this statement 👍😁
But seriously, I don't mind characters being stereotypes especially if they are likeable, look cool or grown as characters.
19:20 Hey! SNK Heroikes is fun!
I am not joking.
In terms of gameplay is actually the most original fighting game SNK has made in recent years.
Also, I like fanservice.
I am a simple guy, I like waifus especially in sexy costumes 😊
Bro, si hablaron de Son Gokuu en este video? Creo que no lo ví.
My man you been making me laugh alot and you made the jokes of Rasputin k dragon and brocken
I can’t wait for the inevitable rise of John Sex!
Loving the content you’re pushing out brother keep at it King! Can’t wait to see you make it. ♥️
bro deserves every sub he has
Thanks so much Zodes, we are all gonna make it bro!
@@neonthunder3261 I couldn’t agree more my friend.
@@JohnSexDD I gotta get back on my grind so we can be sure 😂
I really luv Ur vidéos ❤
This series was one of the first to show up in town with the first Neo Geo Arcade. Loved World Heroes Jet. I'm gonna have to look for that SNK fighting game, it looked super slick.
world heroes 1 was the first fighting game I ever played along with SF2, the machines were right next to each other
Mann super dope video bro thnks for making it I’m jus now starting my action figure collection journey n all I want is jus character backgrounds broke down n all their remake images a lot of these characters jus look really cool n We’ jus want to see em thanks again n keep ‘em comin 🦾🙏🏽
This is and Kizuna Encounter are excellent games
World Heroes was very popular in my country, Guatemala, back in the 90's. You could found it in any arcade store and everybody had a great time, especially in the Death Match mode. Also, in the SNK collection Vol. 01 (for PSP and PS2) you can unlock the first WH if you reach 10 trophies or something like that. It was a fun game, not too serious.
Really cool retrospective hope you do also a last blade retrospective. Btw my history teacher once showed us a picture of a nazi and it was Brocken from World heroes
hahaha wtf
Epic fail
Bro you are very underrated!
It was released in 1996, it ended up in the shadow of The King of Fighters 96 and Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 2 😔
I would have liked to see Ninja Master's characters in Samurai Shodown.
My favorite characters were Karasu, Natsume and Kasumi.
If you have time you should do a WTF is Fighters History video
In World Heroes 2 we have Neo Geegus and Dio. Dio became "Neo" in World Heroes Perfect.
oh
In some mobile games, Geegus becomes Geo Geegus.
Banger vid, big agree to the thoughts on the Ogura art lol
I want a gigaleak of every isolated video game art ever
The feelings I felt when I first found high quality isolated KOF XIII artwork was akin to ejaculating for the first time
BTW, Shura 🇹🇭 is based on Muay Thai Legend Nai Khanom Tom FYI.
Is J. Carn’s first name Jenghis or Julius? I get conflicted answers.
Pretty sure it was Julius
@@JohnSexDD probably a subtle reference to Julius Caesar?
These were in any big arcade during the early 90s, usually in the same row as Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat
can ADK explain why did World Heroes don't make a mirror match?
Love this series! Got to know about it through Neo Geo Battle Coliseum.
I played WH 1 alot when it first came out on the arcade, I was like 13 or 14. It was great fun and I thrashed alot of other players. Many ppl didnt know to do combos. And there's more combos in WH2. Fun times... Growing up sucks 😞
U should make video of aggressors of dark Kombat 😊
if you want to talk about something obscure make a video about Aggressors of dark kombat
Amazing video though
Great video. Yea I've been a world heroes fan since the 1st one on the mvs arcade back in the day
Randomly came across this video. I’m a huge fg enthusiast, so I’ll give World Heroes a shot.
Deathmatch mode’s obstacles were so fun
11:37 this guy reminds me of Baoh
NEW VIDEOOOOOOO LETS GOOO
jesus christ the world really needs to know and find the world heroes ova, literally cant google anything about it
Such comfy content.... subbed
Thank you mate!
This is one of the game's that was on the mess deck of my ship on my 3rd deployment. Played it much more than I should have. 🤓
Wait you had an arcade cab on a military ship? That's sick lol
Big shoutout to Neo Dio for being more than references. We know this from his NGBC theme: "Surfs up I'm the biggest balls jock."
Is Tasco's the only supermarket in Britain?
no truth be told i dont even shop there
Im man enough to admit i have a big crush on Johnny maximin since i played this at the local arcade as a kid.
Man if you never played this that is just sad. 😢
good video man , subbed
There was a fighting arcade game in the 90s. I only remember there was a bummy girl and a mushroom man. All the characters seem to be based on like fantasy games and movies like Final Fantasy, Zelda, and Lord of the Rings stuff like that, you get the point. Does anyone remember this arcade?
galaxy fight and waku waku seven had bunny girls but no mushroom guy.
Any news on the World Heroes OVA ?
Haven't seen anything sadly
Where did the Hanzo artwork used in thumbnail come from and can you share it?
I drew it myself! I might post it seperately sometime
@@JohnSexDD ight if you got a DeviantArt page or something, let me know because your art looks good
Played world heroes before school almost everyday in high school
At least ADK/Alpha Denshi left leaving us their magnum opus, Twinkle Star Sprites.
I highly recommend it
It evek got a sequel for the PS2 that sadly never left Japan 😢
I'm actually a DIEHARD 'Workd Heroes' fan!
This game was ported to the Genesis two years after its Arcade release.
Them whippersnappers don't know about that young World Heroes 😎🌎🔥
Wait.... there's a world hero's anime?
Zeus is Rosh from Fist Of The North Star
Man, it seems like everyone accepts that Zeus is based on a Fist of the North Star character but can't agree on whom.
Based on Punchmania/Fightingmania, I'm going with Souther.
Don't be bad talking World Heroes series now lol. I loved them since my teenage school years and I still do even now.
But I liked them all as well
World Heroes 2 for the NES is my favorite
"Sometimes racism can be a good thing"
**immediately namedrops Hulk Hogan**
Lol
I love this game
I play it all the time when I was young
It was good
Many people dont know that you can use double jumps in World Heroes, its super useful against CPU
I would say there is 0 problems with the fan service on snk heroines
