The game is a canon spinoff meant to expand on Metroid Prime's lore and will help give the players more context when the next main Prime game comes out. Tanabe said it himself.

Nick B Plus Nintendo did say that the game will have a single player campaign featuring Samus. For now, I'm calling it Metroid Prime 3D, since Federation Force is one of the multiplayer modes, including Blast Ball aka the Metroid version of Mario Strikers since Next Level Games is developing it.
Nick B It looks awful, especially judging from the gameplay at the Treehouse. It just looks like taking the Metroid name and slapping it on the game for what they expected to be guaranteed sales.
I don't expect them to cancel it, but yeah it would be far better if it was disconnected from Metroid as a whole.

I think some people have missed the point of this, It's fine if you think the game is shit everyone is entitled to an opinion. But when you start online petitions to cancel/change them game you become the biggest man child on earth. To be honest anyone who signed the petition should be embarrassed and should be reconsidering their priorities.
I like Metroid and all I have to say I wish people would stop hating one of my favorite series so hard like this. I never played federation force, and I should be one of the ones to keep their mouths shut until I play it before explaining why I like some of this or not at all in that.

I think I can get where you are coming from. I don't know much about the different types of art styles as that is not my major or anywhere near my field of study. It's just that from my perspective and in my opinion it seems to me that OoT, MM and Twilight Princess all had a more realistic and serious feel to how they looked.

The initial hypocrisy is whats polarizing. The game debuted at the Nintendo World Championships as Blast Ball. Immediately, comments were flooding in the chatrooms how awesome it looked and how it resembled a Metroid based Soccer game. People were excited. Then the trailer comes out, and it was a complete 180. Do Metroid fans even know what they want anymore?

I think the problem with most of the torture ideas you hear from people or see in media, is that they're just not very well planned.
Law-Abiding Citizen is one of the very few circumstances you see where the torture was really given some thought. He brought medical supplies, he kept the guy alive and aware for as long as he possibly could. Factoring in medical supplies makes torture ideas much much worse.
Half the torture ideas you see are going to be lethal within a few days or less! And they focus so heavily on physical pain.
So for example:
1) Deprive them of sleep. This doesn't hurt, but it warps their minds, gets them delirious, makes them lose track of time and how long they've been suffering. They'll be held in a padded cell with no windows. It's not completely dark...not all the time. There will be enough light to just barely see where they are most of the time, but the lights will alternate to blindingly brilliant, and pitch blackness at random, and for random durations. The temperature in the room will vary as well, from uncomfortably cold to uncomfortably hot. Various sounds will play behind the walls at random intervals. A truck passing by, a helicopter overhead, animals outside, a woman sobbing, children playing, a man screaming. But no words.
2) Deprive them of human contact. In time, they'll long for contact even from the torturer. But the torturer will wear a featureless mask, to avoid giving them the sense that they're seeing a human face. Plus no words will be spoken. No human voices. The victim will only receive small scraps of paper with typed sentences printed on it. These scraps of paper will only describe, in vague terms, future methods of torture, so that the victim will have to wonder about the specifics of what will happen. They will read them at first, later they'll resent them and crumple them up and toss them away....but their curiousity will eat at them, making them want to read the note and find out what's happening.
3) Give them hope. Tell them in vague terms that they're getting closer to the end. String that out as long as possible, when it looks like they've lost hope, give them a finite deadline. (It's not like they have a calendar or a clock in there, you can stretch this for a good long while, if they scratch the wall to track time, alter their scratches). On very rare occassions, a note will tell them that they've done well in their last session and it'll be accompaneid with a good meal. No tricks, it's just good food for them to enjoy. The torture can't just be relentless, it needs to be properly paced so that subsequent torture can have proper contrast to the relatively good times. If it ever looks like they've fully resigned to their fate, inspire them. Make them struggle, don't let them just withdraw inside themselves. There needs to be something left to crush.
4) Keep them healthy for as long as possible, feed them everything they need, supply ample water. If they try to starve themselves, they'll be given IV drips and tube-feedings. Again, all done without communication. They'll even be hosed down to keep them from getting infection from accumulated grime.
See, at this point, I haven't even talked about hurting them. It's a pretty horrible experience before even doing any explicit torture. I'm guessing Gitmo already covered a bunch of this stuff? You can do some pretty appalling stuff to people without even doing direct harm.
5) Finally, inflict more than just physical pain. Do as little lasting physical damage as possible. Start small, little paper cuts. Blindfold them so they can't anticipate where they'll be hurt. Jolt them with electricity. On rare occassions you do something more damaging, show them a mirror, then cauterize skin in visible places, to gradually take away the hope that they'll ever be able to walk amongst regular society without looking like a freak, and most importantly being careful not to let them get infection or shock. The degree of pain is less important than just being creative and unexpected. Once you do permanent damage, it's done, and you're forever cut off from inflicting any more damage to that area. You can't just take off the hands and feet, they'll develop sores so quickly from crawling that they'll die, and you won't be able to do any further harm to the hands and feet.
You also don't want to just continually ramp the torture, that's predictable. You need to stay unpredictable, one day it's a glowing brand pressed on the skin, and 3 days later...just a slap in the face. If they can work themselves up to prepare for debilitating mind-numbing pain...and find that it's not so bad, once again, you give them hope that the next torture session will be a light one. This helps make it so much worse when their hopes are dashed.
You could use drugs for more than medical treatment. Give them lots of psychoactives, creating bad hallucinogenic trips, and abuse them in the middle of their hallucinations to make them seem even more real. Have them hallucinate in total darkness. Use the drugs to extend their perception of time.
Play on their morals. Introduce another prisoner, perhaps through a CCTV video feed of another cell, the other prisoner will be gagged and with a hood over their head of course. Tell them that if they scream during this next round of torture, it'll immediately stop, and the other prisoner will suffer the same torture in their place. This way you can introduce moral shame to the prisoner, again, we're looking for more than simple physical pain. After they're returned to their cell, allow them to hear screaming (it doesn't have to be real, it just needs to be convincing). Tell them they have a chance to try again next time, just tell them "If you can bear this next round well enough, we won't torture the other". Notice how the definition of success is left purposefully vague? It's because the prisoner is going to go through the full round, and then he'll be informed in his cell that he had failed again. It helps if you know the prisoner well enough to develop a list of people they care about. You can tell them either before or after that the person under the hood was one of these people (You can just use an actor it doesn't matter, the hood makes it easy to lie here).
Give them a chance before the next round of torture to explain why they shouldn't be tortured. This provides an opportunity to beg. Sometimes they'll take it, sometimes they won't. On rare occassions, spare them, let them think that their pleading actually made a difference. It's all just there to give them an opportunity to debase themselves and try to erode self-esteem as they beg. Offer to let them avoid a torture session by doing something terrible to someone or something else. I'll let your imagination run wild with this one.

But seriously, people are blowing things out of proportion over a harmeless game. I can understand people wanting a new proper Metroid game after the disaster of Other M, and I can understand not liking FF when you actually got a justified reason, but come people, y'all can act better then this! My biggest gripe with many people who bash FF to no end is how irrational, unfair, and melodramatic they act around it. And making a online pettion to get the game canceled is beyond stupid and childish. That shows how a portion of Metroid fanbase has been reduced to a bunch of whiny bratty babies who throws a temper tantrum when they don't get what they want. And as a long time Metroid fan, seeing my fellow Metroid fan acting like a bunch of whining unreasonable fanbrats is embarrassing! My advice, give FF a chance and judge it as it own game, because after all it is a spin-off Metroid games. If you don't like it, that's fine sense it might not be your cup of tea, but like I said above, have a justified reason to not liking the game instead of going off saying "THIS IS NOT MY METROID GAME! (The funniest thing about this drama is a few years ago, Metroid fans were crying because Nintendo cancelled Next Level's 2D metroid game... now that they have a 3D Metroid game that plays exactly like Metroid Prime from Next Level Games, they are upset because it is a spin-off... but more than that, upset by the art direction of this spin-off, even though that is probably to emphasize that it is a spin-off)
thepokekid01 Except it doesnt play exactly like metroid prime and doesnt at all have what made the prime games so great. Exploration, isolation, atmosphere, and a good subtle story. And The art direction part is just a non-point since there have been spinoffs before that keep the same art style, and chibi lego style doesnt go with metroid at all, a series about entire planets dying and going extinct.

If that is the case, Metroid can never be a big franchise like Mario or Pokemon. This type of game allows them to do more. Now I have no clue what fans would have expected from a Next Level WiiU game, I imagine they are not the ones they pictured making the game for WiiU, so what's the problem?
You aren't playing as Samus. This is the type of game to expand the universe, much like a Paper Mario or Mario Kart game would. It's overblown nonsense.

this was the greatest over-exaggeration of a Metroid fan's reaction. admittedly, I was annoyed at first due to higher expectations, but I got over it once i realized that there are plenty of great Metroid games I could play for my Metroid fix, which makes this game harmless at worst.
It really seemed as if they were making an unrelated game, but someone had the idea to slap "Metroid Prime" on the name.

If they told you that Prime 4 was in development (which we all know it is) but had to delay so we got this instead, I doubt anyone would have had an issue.

I think FedForce is a good idea, there are some opportunities to expand the universe that Samus, alone or as a member of a team, cannot meet. That said, there are two things I still don't like about it: 1) The (early) aesthetic is so ugly. Not only is it ugly, but it doesn't fit with the series' look at all. and 2) This is right after Other M. If this had followed Prime 3 no one would give a damn, but we miss (actual) Samus.

remember the feeling of loneliness instilled by metroid, super metroid, prime, zero mission, and parts of fusion. fans of that whole thing probably don't want to play an online coop shooter, im not saying don't make it because its an affront to the series, im saying that you clearly don't know your demographic nintendo, and it won't sell well.

zenie250 the thing is when the game was confirmed as cancelled fans flocked and protested on social media and now they want cancelled (metroid fans always asked for a multiplayer focused installement)

While Federation Force certainly isn't what I wanted from a new Metroid game, the groups of fans who are acting pretty outrageously entitled are definitely just giving Metroid fans a bad name.

Zachary Schultz They said the idea for this game has been pitched around by the very producer of the Prime franchise for 10 years now, back between the releases of Prime 2 and 3. Thing is back then they already had Prime Hunters in the making so they held off.
Was this the right time to finally bring this old idea to light? No, I think the timing was pretty damn poor. But I'm not gonna tell this guy what he can and can't make all because it's not what I wanted.
Wafflecone69 They only celebrate anniversaries of franchises that rake in millions upon millions, and sad to say Metroid always bombs in Japan, so it's always been more of a niche for Nintendo to begin with. Remember the 8 year hiatus between Super Metroid in 1994 and Fusion and Prime in 2002? Not like F-Zero gets any anniversary love either. Next year is F-Zero's 25th anniversary, and unless we get a surprise announcement at E3 I doubt that situation's gonna be any better.
Hell even Star Fox doesn't get anniversary love and it's got a new entry on the way, but before this do you remember an "anniversary collection" in 2013 to celebrate 20 years of Star Fox? Actually hell now that I think about it it seems like the only people not upset about much right now are Star Fox fans like me. I waited 9 years since Command for a new entry and I'm finally getting it, I'm sure this can hold me over until a new Metroid is announced.
