I'm an Albanian living in London and have been working closely to some Muslim families from Africa. They taught me a lot about Muslim religion that I didn't know before. I got to know Selma from their Nasheed songs, but I think Selma never thought she would be so famous around Muslim world. She is a religious girl. Her great great grandfather was the lider of Muslim community after the fall of communism.( Haxhi Hafiz Sabri Koci), but she is an Albanian too. We are believers at heart, we behave appropriately, but we don't wear hijab, not part of our culture and we are very cultured people. We have suffered a lot to survive and our culture kept us not being assimilated by Slavs. People have to understand the reality surrounding someone before they start judging.
I don't know Selma personally, but I believe she is following her dreams. She is a talented and intelligent girl too. In Albania we have a nice religious environment. We don't mind if we are different religious from each other. We cherish all our religions. We celebrate Eid, Christmas etc., but the point is that our traditional laws get priority over religious ones, because when we were Christians, Serbs and Greeks called us Serbs and Greeks, and when we converted to Muslim they called us Turks. Religion didn't help us at all, on the contrary our land and people got cut off from Big Powers and now we are surrounded by our own people outside Albania in countries like Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia and Greece. Serbs and Greeks have done genocide on us hundred years ago, but nobody bothered about it. Only our stubbornness in sticking to our traditions and ethnicity made us survive and not being swallowed by our greedy neighbours, especially Slavs. Muslim Bosnians are simply Albanians assimilated by Slavs. That's why our traditions are so important. Hope you get a big picture of Albania now.
