Hey there Driver. Much thanks for taking the time to drop by to catch today's video. What are your thoughts on spread axle trailers vs the tight tandem setup? Love to hear your thoughts.

I've got a 48x102 Conestoga with a spread axle. I like the fact that I don't have to worry about axle weight.

Flatbedder here. All I have driven since I left CDL school was spread axle. I never got on the scale at the truck stop in my short career. Majority of flatbed shippers do have in house scale so I do utilize those.

Thanks Dave, those were the days, got caught in Idaho one night bull hauling, one cow to many, the old dump and run failed to fool them.

Spreads are great for long haul but for local deliveries they are terrible.

I pulled a tri axle for local vac-tank work, and it was quite the challenge. It was my first tractor-trailer job after doing straight truck or truck and pup but I picked it up quick. I’ve pulled them so much that switching to over the road I had to retrain my brain to pay attention to the swing

i ran a lot of 3x9 spreads axle trailers in Michigan in the 90's. Front axle was a lift. Best pulling trailers running down the road. Especially well on icy roads, backing on dirt sure did rip up the ground though. Mostly just slid. 100k legal weight there, helped when getting paid by percentage.

Spread axel’s are the best. Every trailer I’ve owned where spreads. Dump on back get that trailer any where. Put dump valve’s on both axels and could get away a little over on axel weigh just by dumping and loading axels. Got me out of axel overloads a few times.

Six bag, quick dump n blast system is the way to go There is a reason why long wheelbase trucks run spreads, here in eastern PA, the 717 area, we got a lot of ltl guys that run awesome spreads and trucks to match.

One eveing my uncle stopped by called up before hand An asked if I had any coffee made. I said no but I can make some up real quick. truck an trailer was all lit up. Got his coffee quick chat an off he went .

Hmm. Only pulled 53' van trailers for a year but once I got a few different heavy loads and played around with the tandem position it was pretty easy to just look at the BOL to see the weight then eye ball the tandems after looking inside the trailer. Usually got it first try or second try if it was something completely new. I didn't think it was that much of a big deal. Was even easier when I got put in a new International LT with a built in scale on the drive axles.

I love spread axle trailers. But my favorite is my 40 ft 10'2" tri axle. I can scale everything. Now i got blanket overweight permits for 2 states
    Up to 95000 lb.
    I got 3 kinds a 12 pin chassis
Then i got a 20 ft dump chassis for a 20fter same 10' 2" spread. slier er out for bridge slider in to dump.
Then i got a tank chassis with the sspread they're nice.

I started flatbeding in 92 and that first my
First experience with a 10 ft spread and I loved it, I could always count on my axle weights being right everytime 28,000 on my drives
    38,000 on my trailer
    A spread is the only
    Way to go.

I briefly drove reefer OTR. Spread axle advantages are huge in saving time. They were also a status symbol. An OO with spread axles means he's really got it together financially. The spread axle truckers had instant respect everywhere.

He is exactly right. I remember back in the late 80’s I worked for a large company from Mondovi. I new a O/O from Minnesota that had a spread axle reefer and had the exhaust air from the dump valve plumbed into an empty auxiliary air tank……I’ve been trucking for 47 years, I know. The story about the apples, I remember hearing about these stories.

Question for anyone to answer. If people back in the day were doing stuff that is considered dangerous today, we're there just as many accidents back then as there are today? It seems like there's way more today dispite all this talk about safety.

~ 1:24 - what is the purpose of the long tractor wheelbase and huge spread between the sleeper and the trailer? Around here I see a tractor like this maybe once every two years, so they come in from other areas I guess. My only guess is that it was some type of stylish thing before drivers had to be careful about fuel costs, or that it had something to do with bridge law, or perhaps the tractors were just that uncomfortable on old-school suspension and owners made long wheelbase trucks to even out the ride.

Honestly having done flatbed with a spread axle and dry van with tandems, there's no way I'd go back to a spread axle. Sliding tandems is easy as cake, but trying to maneuver that spread axle in a tight parking spot at Love's after all the good spots were taken... No thanks. I'd rather slide my tandems 100 times than park a spread axle once.

Can someone explain to me like I’m a 10 year old how the dump valves helped beat the scales? Never pulled a spread axle and was not driving back in the day where you could cheat the scales. But your gross is your gross no matter how you spread it out. I’m lost on this.
