when i was a tactics instructor at SOI back in the mid 90s we tested some MOUT camo. it was light gray, dark gray with a kind of bluish gray camo pattern. no black. our MOUT city then was all concrete block so it did ok, though a little dark. worked good at night. these days i think something that fought back against thermal scopes is the most important form of camouflage in a built up area.

I've got a family friend who served in the NYPD for 25 years. He's told me before that their ESU (equivilant to SWAT) wore urban camo in the late 90's with the intention of making them harder to see on CCTV security cameras when conducting raids. The practice wasn't widespread among all ESU officers or long lasting, but it's an interesting perspective on some of the thought process behind urban camo and specific circumstances at that time. Now they wear solid blue and sometimes black uniforms.

Grey does make sense for an "urban" camo, mainly because grey is least likely to attract the eye, so while not prefect in all terains, you stand the best chance of blending in for most situations, if someone was trying to move stealthily to a building to breach unnoticed then a plate carrier under a jacket with your pouches and rifle stowed in a backpack would be the optimal option, but for sake of argument you wouldn't be deploying troops in that kinda setup

I've seen photos from war games and training exercises in the 90s/early 2000s. I used to think it was dumb concept, how do you camo in a city, but seeing those photos made me rethink my stance.
From photos, if you actually see urban camo the way an enemy combatant would (i.e. several blocks away, around a corner, against a street, etc.) it is actually somewhat effective. The effect depends on being some distance away and it works best when everything in the opposing force is decked out in the same camo scheme, because it makes all the shapes and silhouettes smear into each other somewhat.
You can still tell there's something there and you can mostly identify what it is, but it does obscure exactly what it is. For example you can tell it's a tank but you might not be able to tell the exact model, or is that four soldiers, five soldiers, maybe six?

T-Block I made it this far.
I think that a grey suit with a typical beige trenchcoat would work quite well, I know that it sounds a lot like the 'Cargo Shorts and T-shirt' option, but it will allow you to blend into society, you can hide a decent amount of stuff in a trenchcoat, and if you need camo, as you were saying, grey is rather common in cities.
I'm sure that there'd be ways to tweak it to make it more compatible, for example some lapels have a button so that you can fold them back over onto themselves and keep it shut, meaning that your shirt is hidden, making you more into just solid whatever colour you are in.

Granted some will debate if something more noticeable would be better
Imo either way a full kit of Pencott Metropolis or some giant pimp suit with a neon sign saying "security" is better than what i wear, which is some black polo shirt that says the company name in a fairly small font, especially since a black Nike polo looks the same from a distance

UCP-D is good but so hard to find. I like chocolate chip camo where the tan is dyed a dull greenish gray. The brown blotches go slightly dark and break up your silhouette into smaller objects and the colors(if done correctly) avoid catching your eye. The tiny flecks of off white (now light gray) and black give the pattern texture and avoid making the pattern look flat. I’ve had mixed results dying 3color camo. Your mileage may vary but back in my paintball days I wore that stuff in everything from a brick factory complex(abandoned) to an old trailer park. I also played an airsoft game in an old mall. I can’t tell you how many people said “I literally couldn’t see you”. Most dull tertiary colors will perform well in an urban setting. All that said, nothing is perfect. That’s why putting a solid object between you and the other guy is the best urban camouflage.

  • @2ndrangersww2

Tblock. Anyway I think the best camouflage for an urban environment isn't a color or pattern, but knowing your environment. You're going to come across all sorts of environments in a city. Brick, concrete, metal, wood and grass in parks. The best camouflage would be knowing where to move and when. If we're talking a post apocalyptic scenario, you could wear any dark camo, even woodland varieties like MARPAT. The power grid would most likely be out, and the sky scrappers and buildings would block most moon light. So your best bet is traveling at night. Plus in a city the last place you want to be is out on the street, and good luck trying to find a camo that matches building interiors. I would say that the urban landscape is really the only environment where the color and pattern of camo really won't matter, as long as you can stay out of the open.

On a serious note, I would make a gray base color and proceed to add large squares on the original layer. These squares would not be gray, but would be drained and unsaturated to the point in which it mixes fluently with gray. Maybe some dry brown and blue would work well on the gray.

Right now in NYC all the store fronts are boarded up with plywood because of the looters. So a plywood camo pattern would work well during shtf

T-Block Interesting observation about what is going to happen in urban areas, in a North American context, if SHTF. Looks like the best operational tactic would be to corral off those cities, let them fight it out, then go in to deal with the survivors. Rather than to go in at the start of SHTF and ending up with all the various factions ganging up on your force.
Anyway keep safe, keep sane and keep posting such interesting contnent Mike.

I just bought some "subdued urban digital" camo items from Propper and Rothco. It's like a much darker version of US Army UCP and I love it. I love the fact that it's made by genuine military suppliers but it's not used by any military that I know of... except the one I'm recruiting for now lol. Join Me!

Everyone likes the T pattern because it’s uncommon. UCP is actually good in a built up urban environment, especially in a combat zone with destroyed buildings. Also there’s SO much of it on the market you can pick up UCP clothing and gear for pennies

I think the U. S. "Grandma's couch" pattern was on the right track towards being a good camo for a urban enviroment filled with senior citizens.
You know, in case you have a firefight in a retirement home

ACU. Yeah, it was meant as an urban-esque camo, but it got used everywhere and ended up being hated because it stuck out like a sore thumb in the desert

I would say: don't go for a pattern. that will make you stick out. Use neutral, earth tones, then use any foliage around to make you less visible.
my kid wears faded jeans and different shades of gray.....and he disappears when walking in a gravel parking lot.
if you want an urban ghillie suit: use a used shower curtain and make it into a hooded poncho, then glue trash to it. Think I kidding? lie down in an alley and add some ground debris (bark, leaves, whatever) to your suit and see how well it works.
I made one, and put it in my backpack when playing nerf with my son and his friends....I wore basic camo, to look like a CTSF type of look. I let them see me from a distance, then I ran into the dumpster area at the complex. There is no way out except to climb out....but i used my suit, tossed my back back on underneath, sat in the dumpster area and didn't move. they walked in, looked around, left.....got shot, one by one without knowing what was even going on.
.....they, uh....don't let me play anymore. I'm not sure why. 😕

Holy Shit Mike, you basically read my mind with your points. Urban camouflage is pretty much a failure at the conceptual level because cities come in every color under the sun. You can't even walk two streets without buildings possibly being in radically different colors.
Not to mention that urban combat takes place at such close ranges that camouflage is basically useless anyway.

I'd thought modded UCP would make for decent urban camo (and it's very surplus now after its ultimate failure in the Near East).
