  • Some songs get sung one year and not another for whatever reason, but Dirt Made My Lunch is perennial. Preschoolers love gardening and growing food; my school always has something growing in the garden beds, and the edible plants get the most attention. In the spring last year, we would sing this song and then trace all the food we were going to have for lunch that day back to the dirt. (ie. cheese comes from milk; milk comes from cows; cows eat grass; grass grows in the dirt, so when you bite into cheese, you're enjoying a slice of delicious dirt!). Much giggling ensued.
My guest, Ashtyn Avella told me in no uncertain terms that she was reserving "Dirt Made My Lunch" for her next recording session, and I was happy to promise her the moon and the stars to ensure she made a second visit. Ashtyn is a friend and a colleague, a fellow music educator and performer in San Francisco. She teaches preschool through 5th grade music and sings in several local ensembles.
    Lyrics:
    CHORUS:
    Dirt made my lunch,
    Dirt made my lunch.
Thank you, dirt, thanks a bunch,
    For my salad, my sandwich,
My milk, and my munch 'cause
    Dirt, you made my lunch.
"Dirt" is a word that we often use,
When we're talkin' about the earth beneath our shoes.
    It's a place where plants can sink their toes;
In a little while a garden grows.
    CHORUS
A farmer's plow will tickle the ground,
You know the earth has laughed when wheat is found.
The grain is taken and flour is ground,
For making a sandwich to munch on down.
    CHORUS
A stubby green beard grows upon the land,
Out of the soil the grass will stand.
But under hoof it must bow,
For making milk by way of a cow.
    CHORUS
