Sorry guys but Tokaji is not an ice wine at all. It is made from furmint grapes , much of which have been infected with botrytis (aka. Noble rot). The infected grapes are kept separate, crushed, fermented and placed in containers called “puttonyos” the number of these puttonyos added to regularly fermented furmint juice dictates the level of sweetness in the final wine. This up to a maximum of 6 is typical. Above this is something known as “eszenzia”. This is pure botrytis juice and truly “nectar of the gods” Keep up the good work. I have learned so much from you guys that I am happy to return the favor in some small way.
Daniel fails to google. Have an in-law who runs a tour business with her husband in Budapest and know all about this stuff. Actually had some great Hungarian wines from them.
Great episode, especially interesting as I have this bottle on my shelf waiting to be opened! You did get something wrong regarding Tokaji wine though Tokaji Aszu is not made sweet from freezing on the vine. The sweetness comes from botrytis (noble rot) which punctures the skin, makes the water evaporate and leaves the grapes dried with higher concentration of sugar, acidity, flavours :) similar result but different way of reaching there. Not all wines from Tokaj do this though, but the sweet wines use this method!
This was my first whisky I bought at 100 bucks or more. I like it a lot, like Glenmorangie in general. Still prefer the 14yr port finished. But glad I bought it. Since it's a LE I won't really see it again to be tempted to buy it, but with how much it costs it would be hard to justify it.
its definitely unique, but im not sure its good. i bought a bottle cause i thought it was so interesting, but ive had it three separate times and while its not bad, i dont think ive ever thought it was good.
Tokaj isnt an Ice wine its a dessert wine made using grapes affected by Botrytis cinerea which causes the grapes to shrivel and also results in a higher sugar content !
If you want to taste Tokaii wine cask finished whiskey, try The Nobleman from Saints Alley. A Texas Rye finished in tokaii wine barrels. Ironroot release thru Total wine.
Just wanted to add that Tokaj Ice Wine is only but one variety of wine made in the Hungarian Tokaj wine region and even then it's a much more recent addition to the types of wine being produced there. There are a variety of Sweet and Dry wine type made under the Tokaji name, though the sweet wine varieties are the most famous outside of Hungary. Hungarian sweet wine from this region are typically made from grapes covered in Noble Rot, a gray mold that is deliberately cultivated on grapes to enhance the sweetness of certain sweet wines. Aszú: This is the most famous sweet Hungarian wine around the world-famous sweet and is most commonly known as Tokay outside of Hungary. Szamorodni: The difference between Szamorodni and ordinary wines is that it is made from bunches of grapes which contain a high proportion of botrytised grapes and is typically higher in alcohol than ordinary wine. While most Szamorodni wine is very sweet they do produce some dryer varieties. Szamorodni is typically 14% ABV. Dry Wines: Besides the more well known sweet varieties Hungary also make some dry wines in the Tokaj region such Tokaji Furmint, Tokaji Hárslevelű, Tokaji Sárgamuskotály and Tokaji Kövérszőlő. Tokaji ice wine was first produced in Tokaj region in 1999 and is not as famous as German Eiswein (Ice Wine). Likely, most of what Daniel was drinking as Tokaji or Tokay wine was not actually all Hungarian Ice Wine but some or all was likely one of the other Hungarian sweet wines made with grapes covered in noble rot.
Just a note: Tokaji isn’t Icewine. Tokaji is a region where wine is produced and some of those wines are dessert wine. Those wines often use a lot of grapes affected by botrytis (a mold-condition that dries out the grapes) -> also called Noble Rot. Bc of the dehydration they have a lot of sugar and concentrated flavours, hence the dessert wines. Although there are also dry Tokajis -> no dessert wines. Icewines need to have frozen grapes that are pressed when they are frozen, for similar results: high sugar and oil concentrations, but no Noble Rot tasting notes. In Canada the regulations are pretty strict on Icewines, you can’t just freeze them by machines. Hope this helps clear up any confusion :)
I didn't have the experience with this that yall did. I did have it as an after dinner drink just because at the time I just went ok cake dessert makes sense. I don't totally remember what I had for dinner prior but it was at a friends place so best guess it would have been either fried chicken, pizza, or chili lol. If I could find my notes on it I would be able to say for sure what I had with it but I remember my notes had "waves of fruit and oak" because I haven't had that note again.
Wow. You guys really killed my FOMO for this, not that it's available anymore. Not long after this came out, there was an internet echo chamber of hype for this bottle and how VERY MUCH the taste profile and the marketing matched and it really was like drinking cake.
If it's almost too sweet, perhaps a cocktail with some sour to it might work, like adding a citrus juice, or sweet & sour mix along with some carbonation fiz
I started my whisky journey with Monkey Shoulder, Black label, Chivas 12, Redbreast 12 and some. But for a couple of months I got super indulged in Bourbon, the Elijahs, Wild Turkeys, Michter's et al. Now that I am trying to taste my all time favorite Chivas 18 or even Monkey Shoulder, I just taste burnt and nothing else. Bourbon can have some very rich flavors but scotch IMO is way more complex with depth, and variation. How do I acclimatize my palate to be able to taste scotch again, not just burnt? Anyone have similar experience? Please help. I tried scotch after a break from alcohol for a month and still taste burnt.
It is. It's noble rot from Botrytis fungus that encapsulates the grapes. Ice wine is made from grapes that have frozen on the vine. Similar effect in raisining the grape, but different causes.
Toe-Ki-Ee* My Hungarian heritage has made me absolutely love this whiskey! We went through it way too quick. I had a special edition Arran that was a Tokaji finish that was fantastic. This one is close but not quite as good. I've had a horrible Tokaji aged scotch as well lol!
Please look up what tokaji actually is and how to pronounce it. I was sooooo confused and had no idea what in the world you were talking about as a Hungarian.
It's used just rarely, I'd assume because it hasn't gotten popular and apparently it also foams up like crazy during the fermentation so you have to use lower levels.
Glenmorangie original is a great whisky to present to any newcomer, still to this day, I enjoy it and is my go to whisky when I'm in doubt of what to get. The Lasanta is very nice also. But I do enjoy the smokey whiskies a LOT! Talisker 10 years is an absolute must have. Aerstone (land cask) is similar to Talisker but without that "punch" on the mouth of the first sip, is a lot more "elegant", on the other hand the smoke note goes away faster.
5:06 tell me that your an npc without telling me your an npc (opens a container of chunky monkey and places it in front of the boys) c'mon, no sweets ever?
I'm actually descended from a royal Hungarian family that made Tokaj wine before communists came in and forced us out. Cool to hear stuff about Hungarian wines!
I'm gonna be honest I had this when it first came out The first scotch I'd ever had And ALL I could taste was iodine It tasted like cutting my elbow at grandma's house circa 1998 I think either I got a wanky bottle or my palette is BUSTED
I just started watching your show. Watched a lot back to beginning. I am just curious if you 2 ever bitch slap each other? Neither one of you let the other finish a sentence…. But it works. 😂

Thank you, as a Hungarian MB, I've felt correcting Tokaji Aszú related information is my responsibility, but you were faster :)

0:20 actually came out more than 2 years ago and was limited edition so good luck finding a bottle now. I still got 3 bottles😏🍰🥃
I have this and I love this. I rank this one in second place behind my favorite... Signet. Do a review on the Glenmorangie Signet please.
I was waiting for the " Daniel Whittington, you magnificent bastard."
haha I was thinking the same thing!
Great episode, especially interesting as I have this bottle on my shelf waiting to be opened!

Ohhhh! I was missing this format with only both of you. More informative 👍
I love!!! this whisky. my first obbessive bottle, bought like 12 of them. Its not boring to me guys!
“The best whisky is the whisky you like”

Revel Stoke S'mores is the first sweet whisky i've ever loved. Surprisingly good and hits different notes on the palate and finish.

My favorite Glenmorangie
Hope you guys do A Tale of the Forest at some point. By far the most unique Scotch I've ever had.
its definitely unique, but im not sure its good. i bought a bottle cause i thought it was so interesting, but ive had it three separate times and while its not bad, i dont think ive ever thought it was good.
Cake scotch? Exciting! Thanks to y'all the exploration of Whiskey has begun, starting with none other than redbreast 12.
I really wanted to try this one when it came out but couldn't warrant buying it at the time. Quite glad from the tasting notes I didn't!
Might be nice in a Scotch Old Fashioned, since it is already a sweeter drink with the sugar or simple syrup.
I have a bottle of this! It's a fun bottle to own and great to drink!
Yeah tokaji is not an ice wine, which is why it is able to also present a decent level of acidity.

Does go really well with cake.
I’ve thought about this one at least a dozen times. I’m glad I never pulled the trigger on it.

I do love their stuff honestly. Do you like Bulls Blood Hungarian red wine?
Have you done the jura caribbean rum cask single malt? I’d like to see that review, it’s one of my favourites.
I gotta say, I really liked this stuff, although it wouldn't be an every day drinker. You have to know going in what to expect.
Daniel Whittington, you Magnificent Baaaaastaaaarrrrrrrd!!!!!!
I like how your comment has a Translate to English, and they just removed 1 r from your Baaaaastaaaarrrrrrrd!!!!!! Lol

I love dessert whiskey as I literally use it as a night cap type thing after dinner. Keeps me from getting fat off ice cream lol
Same friend, same. Or even a dash of dessert whiskey into another whiskey is great.
@@AlwaysZesty never thought about mixing them!!!🤯
Could you use faints to make Gin?
Wow. You guys really killed my FOMO for this, not that it's available anymore.

There's a couple of brands that make cake flavored whiskies. Skatterbrain is one of them. It's about $20
If it's almost too sweet, perhaps a cocktail with some sour to it might work, like adding a citrus juice, or sweet & sour mix along with some carbonation fiz
would like to see your reviews on beer guys.
Speaking of cake, what is the tribe opinion of the band Cake.... Seems like Rex would dig them
Hey guys need some help. My grandmother gave me two old bottles of Jameson year 1975 and one Pinch year 1989. Any idea of worth?
Thanks for another honest review 🥃

I thought Tokaji’s process is more akin to Sauternes, not ice wine
It is. It's noble rot from Botrytis fungus that encapsulates the grapes. Ice wine is made from grapes that have frozen on the vine. Similar effect in raisining the grape, but different causes.
I love the fact that "on the rocks" has become a cocktail...🤣
That’s how I look at it.
I wonder if they made it with cake 🤣🎂🧁
What bourbon/whiskey/scotch would you have as your last drink ever?
I love A Tale Of Cake, it has been my favorite from the Tale series, A Tale Of Forest is interesting, a Tale of Winter that one is quire boring

Whiskey Sour perhaps, just going by your taste profiling. Sweet & sour. Anyhow, thanks for the content.
The last episode? Oh a week ago, before dry week, yeah I remember.
i was hoping for a really sped up glorious bastard intro for dan.... the one that goes into the sun...lol

Why doesn't anyone use oats in whisky production?
It's used just rarely, I'd assume because it hasn't gotten popular and apparently it also foams up like crazy during the fermentation so you have to use lower levels.

I have a whiskey I'd love to see what you guys think of called Demon Seed from Boston, Willing to send it if you're interested let me know
Don't save feints and reuse them they aren't in the initial distillation for a reason
Taste is subjective, but you all are simply wrong….. This was delightful and not the deepest of flavor paths but not nearly single note.
GOOD AFTERNOON YOU MB'S.... 🥃
sorry I'm late...
I love this one and it is pronounced Toe ka yee fyi....
It goes good with dessert or a cigar after a meal
"It's sort of flat." Perfect moment to end the video
I had to watch this just because I cant believe that Glenmorangie have released a whisky called Cake
Or a peach liqueur
Gents… FYI - Tokaj IS NOT AN ICE WINE!!! Tokaj sweet wine happens due to the NOBLE ROT.
