Art in Isolation | Series 2 Episode 11: Gluck & Wild Flowers

- In this episode, Philip explores the work of avant-garde artist, Gluck.
Gluck was born to a Jewish family in London, who were connected to Lyons corner shops, at the turn of the 20th century. After attending art school in London as a young artist, Gluck took temporary residence with a group of fellow art students in Cornwall - among them, members of the Newlyn School of painters.
Gluck’s progressive confrontation of gender norms and chic appearance turned heads during the early 20th century.
We have thoroughly enjoyed filming Art in Isolation and have been moved by your kind responses, enlightening insights and witty comments. To mark the end of this series, Philip will host another ‘Questions and Revelations’ talk, to answer all of your burning questions and explore some revelations which have come to light as a result of your astute observation. This is a wonderful episode, Philip! I was thinking that Gluck was delighting in her painting all of her exquisite flowers as a gift to Constance Spry from her pallet, a bouquet of brushstrokes. Your painting is such a beautiful example of her intricate (if fantasy-scaled) paintwork it reminds me of a tapestry!

Fantastic- would be interesting to do a traveling art examination to view collections -ie the Philips collection in Washington DC -or the Van Gogh museum. The floral display behind "Flora's Cloak" reminds me of the
shape of a wedding bouquet. Portraying her lover as a bride, in the apex
of youth and health. I did not see a lot of stems in that 'bouquet',
only the heads of the flowers, which tells me she only wanted the best
parts of the flower to be shown. It was a wise decision to acquire the
painting you have. It is heavenly, Thank you, Mr. Mould!

Thank you so very much for sharing these works of art. I find it fascinating what the motivation might be for another artist to make their paintings. The painting Nature morte was just stunning too. Surely there must be examples of the preparatory work for this too as it is so detailed and beautiful. I am going to look it up again. I am fascinated by almost every type of art and it is like brainstorming when I go to paint. Thank you again for sharing these treasures. I also enjoyed the series on searching to see if a particular painting was considered a “treasure”. The program was laid out in such a way that it almost almost seemed effortless to find the truth because the team and scientists were so talented. I hope that it will return. Take care.

This was most enticing! Gluck’s painting immediately suggested to me the tradition of embroidery, in which flowers were often equalized in scale, crowded together, with the visual emphasis on the main identifying feature of each flower. I’m thinking of the millefleurs tradition in medieval tapestries, for example; or indeed, ladies’ handwork/embroidery through the ages with its similar qualities. And even closer in time, there were all of William Morris’s designs still in-the-air. Without doubt, however, the reason the tradition of embroidery came to my mind so insistently are those fine, thread-like white lines she used along stems and in other details. An embroiderer might do exactly the same! None of this is to suggest that any of these were templates for Gluck, or influenced her in any direct way at all. However, her work is that much richer for this hint of - or reference to - tradition. I am exceedingly happy with this introduction to an heretofore unknown (to me) artist. Thank you so very much! And thank you for your wonderful Art in Isolation series. I have enjoyed and learned, and have been left thoughtful after each episode. And that’s not even to mention the artistry of your glorious home, the quality of the videos, and your always insightful presentations. Stay well!

And yes, now that you mention it, you could easily see this as an embroidery design. In fact I think an embroiderer should be encouraged to take it on. It was a hobby of my late mother’s.

I have only just encountered these delightful and enlightening videos,
which have revived my interest in British painters of the first half of the 20th century and their cultural and social milieu. This was triggered when in my teens became interested in reading about Roger Fry's exhibitions and reading an ( autobiography or ?biography) of John Rothenstein, director of the National Gallery and later the several volumes of Osbert Sitwell's memoir. Osbert, I suspect, was a somewhat unreliable narrator. On dipping into these books a few years ago, I began to develop some sympathy for the Sitwell siblings' eccentric father, who, orphaned as
a child and brought up by two spinster aunts, had no idea of how to be a father. While he was remote and self absorbed the children were really rather dreadful to him, a fact that, as a very young person, I failed to grasp. In addition, I was early encouraged by an aunt, who, being crippled with severe rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 22, was unable to exploit what promised to be considerable ability as a painter, who set me up with a large and eclectic collection of postcards of well known paintings. She also introduced me to the artists who had provided costumes and backdrops for the Diaghilev ballet company. Ballets which she had seen herself and I was taken by her to the Sadlers Wells Ballet in the 1940s. This shows that I am rather ancient and as a consequence am apt to go boring on about past characters and events which may not seem exactly enthralling to those of later generations! It was just such a pleasure to be reintroduced to these painters and what would now be called influencers. I was also delighted to see the lovely, speedy ?whippet or Italian greyhound in the beautiful Oxfordshire country side surrounding your beautiful house. More nostalgia - my grandparents lived in Wallingford-on-Thames, where they had a wonderful garden, containing everything to delight a child.
I have enjoyed this so much i hope there is a third series.

Thank you for introducing us to this artist. I love the painting. It reminds me of the spreads that Martha Stewart (and others) does in her magazine where she displays many versions of a particular cut flower laying flat on a surface, such as daffodils or tulips, and photographed from above. 🥰☕️🍩💐
Once again I am thankful for "Art in Isolation". Lovely to watch and to learn, and this one was also fun. However I must confess the painting that fascinated me was the one on the wall behind of the landscape and the pink house. Was that an episode I missed or is it, hopefully, an episode to come?
