  • This is the official trailer for the film Self-Taught: Life Stories From Self-Directed Learners.
Through the stories of six extraordinary individuals, Self-Taught explores what self-directed education means to them and the impact it has had on their lives, ambitions, work, and beliefs.
Whether Artist, Scientist, or Entrepreneur, they all have one thing in common: their belief that true education is the capacity to author your own life instead of merely accepting the one you’ve been handed.

I was really inspired by the stories of these young people! To have a documentary to share with others considering this path or unsure of this path is a valuable tool to enable more of our youth to take that different path - one that works for *them*. Thanks to Jeremy Stuart for screening Self-Taught at the AEROconference.org in Portland this past weekend. If you want to see more - do a RUclips search for "Self-Taught movie" and you'll find more clips from Jeremy's documentary.

What I respect most about this film is that while most of the stories are happy, the creators didn't edit out the young craftswoman's discussions about what she found difficult about self-directed education. It wasn't something she chose for herself, but resulted from her parents' unwillingness to deal with school bureaucrats even though she herself had very much wanted to attend school. Clearly she still struggles with anger over this and the film isn't afraid to be honest about that. Bravo!

I went to Northstar, it's so cool seeing this be made with a partial focus on people I know personally.

This looks great, thanks! I've shared with my local home ed group in Wales, UK. There is a terrible bill going through Parliament at the moment which will be disastrous to self directed learning, at least, in England.

@@kcunningham2316 I'm just saying there is a lot of science behind Self Directed Education, but it is largely ignored and statements like "school is necessary" are taken as fact.
