I love how a cat's voice is always a surprise. You can almost always know what a dog's bark will sound like just by looking at it, but a cat's meow could be anything between this and a delicate little beep and you won't know until it opens its mouth.
@@leeshajoi not to be an ass or anything, but my dog littery tought himself how to meow and my cat how to bark. They switched back by now but was that a trip
@leeshajoi meanwhile my autistic ass can identify the *breed* of dog by the sound of it's bark. The only time it gets confusing is when the dog's a mixed breed, but even then, I'm usually half right. "He may be half poodle, but he *barks* like a cocker spaniel."
Super low meows like that are usually the result of surviving a severe respitory desies as a kitten, causing a thichening of the vocal chords as they grow. She's a survivor!
When my mom took our cat, the woman from shelter told us that "this kitten is probably going to be pretty quiet and independent, as other members of his family" (there were his mom and few older siblings) Fast forward to now, not only he seeks attention every few seconds, everytime you try NOT to interact with him, he will scream for a solid 10 minutes like a freaking nuclear siren
My calico did that, she'd meow normally, was very friendly, but when you were along and she wanted more personal attention like brushing or long term pets she'd make that noise.
My buddy's cat had a meow deeper than Morgan Freeman's voice. Sounded like the pits of hell took residence in his throat. Very amusing when new people heard it!
The cause of this phenomenon is of course the fact that the meows we hear them make are the equivalent of us baby-talking to our dogs. Adult cats meow for our benefit cuz we’re too deaf and stupid to understand grownup cat talk, so they just sort of have to fumble around to try and find something simple enough that it can make it through our thick skulls
My cat with the sqeakiest meow is my lorge orange boi. My tiny, three-legged tabby doesn't vocalize often, but her voice is the platonic ideal of a cat meow. And our siamese mix is a mimic whose favorite noise to make is an approximation of my mother's name.
My hearing can pick up slightly higher pitched sounds so one of my cats grew up meowing to where I could hear it and everything was fine, then I had to move and couldn't keep my cats so I gave them to a friend and their family. They'd often comment about how he never meows. Then I visited and heard him meowing while they didn't notice. After a few months he adjusted his meow to a lower pitch and they started hearing him
That's interesting. I've heard about theory that when a cat is meowing without a sound it's because it's in a frequency they can hear but humans can't. From what i understood it's not a confirmed theory but this history makes it sound really believable
wait this is an exact description of my cat. she doesn’t meow, just kinda like rumbles at me. she was the most quiet and calm cat at the place i adopted her from
My cat barely ever meows, she's very very quiet, but when she does meow she sounds very hoarse and squeaky, like she's recovering from a cold, she's the cutest lmao
That's the sound that house cats naturally make lol If she wasn't raised around humans, and her mother wasn't either, then that's usually what'll happen Mews and meows are just a show for humans
I have a cat that can’t meow that loud, it usually just sounds like a very quiet “a-“ shes perfectly fine and healthy, we’ve gotten her checked multiple times but that’s just how she meows
I can picture what that sounds like. We had a cat who half the time would do like a tongue click followed by a soft aspirated "aa". The rest of the time she did this croaking "ee-ow". Born with the voice and disposition of a cranky old lady, got sweeter with age.
@ very similar to ours, it was either that aa- or just breathing a lil louder. She was a very skittish kitten but now she’s super cuddly and affectionate with everyone
One of our cats never used to meow, but she has always had one of the loudest purrs I've ever heard. Maybe a yesr into living with us, she first meowed. Years later, she meows more often but still rarely, and her meows are really distinctive: they're very small and delicate. She's a really fluffy cat with a strong personality, so it's very funny to see her with these tiny, delicate meows. Her sister, meanwhile, has always been very vocal and meows a lot, and she can meow normally.
My cat is too tiny to get on the counter and the first time I heard her meow I laughed so hard. She is adorable, she is on a calendar, she is pedigreed, and she sounds like a f&ing gremlin and I am there for it. 😂
I had one of those from the shelter, a 6 yo burmese, he didn't meow... he would start off politely yelling a long moooooooooooow, but if ignored for 3 to 5 times and actually hungry, it would go to straight up full chested screaming like deathmetal😂 He was the sweetest, most loving cat ever
My kitten is a rescue He was stuck in a car and kept meowing for who knows how long His loud meows are really scratchy and his quiet meows are silent Like he will open his mouth, but nothing comes out It's the most heartbreaking and adorable thing ever
our cat was a big purrer and we thought he wasnt a big talker but now hes SOO talkative lol he has the sweetest most high pitched little meow ever but that shit deepens when hes fighting with the dogs
My cat was SILENT for the first three or so months we had him. Then, one day, he just started screaming. Full inhale, full exhale meow screaming. I love my cat to bits.
cats meows change depending on the reason they are meowing. There is a meow they do directly AT YOU and there are the meows they do when they want something and cannot contact you directly. Those meows are usually more low and LONG and VERY LOUD
Theres nothing more confusing that hearing an elderly cat that you had for years meow for the first time. I spend a solid 20 minutes looking for the intruder before i realised that leo was the one weowing and not one of the farm cats that like to sneak inside.
This is so relatable. My brothers cat was silent when we got her, she still mostly is, but when she does meow she sounds like a raccoon like literally. It’s so funny. You hear my cat purr meowing then all of a sudden out of nowhere you hear a witch meowing from behind you 😂
My dog is similar. While she sometimes barks (like if she thinks there’s an intruder), she usually makes noises that sound like a mix between a cow and a pig
I got a cat who was so cute and cuddly at the shelter and when I adopted her she became a cat who whines and shouts at people while not wanting to cuddle that much. We found out that it was because she was on a whole ton of medication at the shelter.
This was our kitten! We picked her because she ran right up to us and played. She rubbed all over our hands and legs purring like a motor. She was SO SWEET and SO QUIET. Then we got home and now she screams all night running circles around our grump old man cat. She doesnt meow. She screams.
My sisters and I went to our animal shelter to get a cat and immediately the workers slung a female cat into our arms who was silent and drooling. The worker then exclaimed that the cat was "so relaxed with us!" and that this cat was a "perfect match" for us. Yeah, she was heavily drugged. The drugs wore off at our house a few hours later to reveal the most high strung, mentally impaired, loud cat that will stare into space and just scream. God we love her so much ❤️
I had a similar situation with my little angel. Wasn’t vocal at all at the shelter. I brought her home and she has the strangest, grittiest meow I’ve ever heard. When I took her to the vet and she meowed the first time, my vet said “oh that’s so pathetic” 😂😂 and it’s a very pathetic (but adorable) meow 😂😂😂

thats what i was thinkin!
I thought that was implied from the start yeah

Worst bit is I can sorta hear it in my head
