Funny enough no backlit keyboard on the Samsung is the main reason I am planning to go with the Asus. My current Chromebook doesn't have a backlit keyboard and it bothers me all the time.
I have this chromebook and its the device I own that I use the most, hands down. I have a regular laptop and a tablet, but with the tablet I miss the keyboard, and the laptop takes longer to start, doesnt have as good battery life and is also a little bulkier and heavier (even though it isnt very). This also has a touch screen, which I like. It has the best of both worlds for me, decent battery life, touch screen, light and portable (can bring it to class for taking notes or other work that needs doing) and it has keyboard and starts quickly. I also like that it uses the same charger as my phone. Perfect for my use (and also a lot of other non-gamers), which is facebook, youtube, netflix, taking notes. It doesnt support word however, it has the online version which is enough for me, but not for every student. Also I need a laptop to bring when I do exams cause the chrome os isnt compatible with the program they use for the exam. But overall, this is my most loved and used device. Wasnt too expensive either
I LOVE my C302! It's the perfect size and, like you said, the keyboard is one of the best I've ever laid my hands on. It travels well, great battery life, and is powerful enough for 100% of the tasks I need to do (web, streaming, word processing, reports, email). Chrome is also a great OS - fast and so convenient especially if you rely on Docs, Sheets, Google Drive, etc. Now that it runs Android as well, it's all cherries on top! I'm phasing out my desktop too and connecting an Asus Chromebox to my 4K TV :)
I've had mine for a few days, and I'm in agreement across the board. - Screen is excellent, speaker sound is adequate (which is what I would expect). - Build quality is really nice. - I really like the use of USB-C for power. - eagerly awaiting full release of Android App support My only issue is that the device would not power on initially. You figure - let it acclimate (it's cold here), charge it up, open screen, press power button..... nothing. Thought I had a dud, but looked around and found a device reset key combo (press/hold "refresh" button and power button) - this worked. No issues since.
I love my Chromebook Pro which is an equivalent device but I was tempted to buy Asus C302 (used but excellent condition) on eBay because I have to share my Pro with my GF & this one it was listed for $240 all-inclusive. I just love super light yet powerful chromebooks. Looking forward to receiving it.
Just bought myself this in pc world 2 days ago, and it is brilliant, I love the build quality and the screen is terrific, this replace my R11. From my experience so far it's fast, I don't think I needed to spend the extra several hundred pounds on a pixelbook, in my opinion the pixelbook is overpriced. This laptop is well worth the price
Great review! Have you ever considered doing an "Ask Chrome Unboxed" video series? Reviews are awesome but I'm sure people have tons of questions about using Chromebooks on an every day basis to get work done / video editing and whatnot. IDK just an idea.
Mike, this is a great idea. I am a big Chrome OS device fan. Use Chromebox and Chromebook almost daily. I think there is a lot of misinformation and mis-perception about Chrome OS devices. IMHO a Chrome OS device is the right device for most people if your use case is centered around web based email, social media and web services (banking, etc) and you have access to reliable internet connectivity. I work in IT and use my Chrome OS devices to manage cloud servers and remotely administer Windows, Linux and Mac computers for customers. For productivity I use Google Apps (docs, sheets, slides) and have also used MS 365 with no issues. If you have to do a lot of photo, audio, video editing, need specific non web based software to do you work or a are a heavy gamer a Chrome OS device may not be ideal for you. Hopefully, Robbie will see you suggestion and make a video describing the pros/cons and ideal use cases for Chrome OS devices.
It is almost the end of 2019 and i still use the C302 as my daily driver, it has never dissapointed me. I really want to upgrade to the newest C434 from asus but i honest can justify it because the 302 still performs like the day i bought it 2 years ago. I really cant see me letting go of this device as long as updates roll out.
Yes, the horse-race is on. The Samsung Chromebook Plus/Pro will sell well because of solid marketing and because it's a Surface Pro knockoff at a fraction of the price. But this ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 will sell on its unrivaled combination of design, performance, and price. My Flip is nearly two years old. It's time for a new Flip. Oh and, excellent job on the video.
Great video. If a micro SD card is added, does it go fully into the body of the device or does it partially stick out? I'd like to leave an SD card in permanently but only if there is no chance of it being knocked when moving it around. If anyone can answer my query it would be much appreciated.
Paul Prescott I own the asus c302 and I leave my SD card in with out worry. Sticks out very minimally. Quarter of the size of the volume/power button sticks out, so next to nothing. Not 100% flush but 90% flush. Hope that explains it for you.
Bob Karnowski Exactly what i thought. I wanted the samsung chromebook plus but when i saw the 3:2 screen in person it looks weird. The standard FHD wide screen looks better.
Update: Just got mine in the mail three days ago but it's going back. I'm sure this isn't a problem on all units but my track pad lower right side sticks. Amazon is sending me another one, but other then that I love this Chromebook I have bought several Chromebooks in the past and this one by far is the best one...
It's a late model stock option. Often for these Asus skus they drop a higher end model near the end of its life span in however limited quantities. While beautiful and still highly functional the plastic beze and hingel tends to fail on these models.
You sounded like a Asus sales rep in this video. 1080p is a show stopper for me. The fact that the display comes out of the box scaled back to a lower res is a red flag. Samsung Pro it is.
Until you try a 1080p device with this new scaling option, it doesn't sound great. Believe me, it is. Windows devices in this size with 1080p screens come out of the box scaled 125%. This is exactly the same thing.
Chrome Unboxed I have already tried it, numerous times in my local best buy on the Acer r13, and others. Not a fan. Besides, I can see in your video how tiny and bad things look on that display compared with new Samsung. bestbuy.com
Qban Celli well yeah. but there's a point where adding pixels gets you no benefit besides the sake of making an impressive spec sheet. Quad HD does nothing but drive cost up on devices that don't need them for their typical use case. I have had my C302 for a week and the screen is phenomenal. the Samsung pro gets you a cool screen, but has worse battery life, no backlit keyboard, and half the storage. all for $50 more.
After almost a solid year of use, i can fully agree on all the points made in this video. Easily one of the best chromebooks ever made. Macbook build quality, with that snappy chrome os operating system is a winning combo any day of the week. Android apps are still in the beta stream, but i have maybe had only had apps force close maybe 4 times in the huge amount of time ive owned it. I have a very nice gaming pc that ive made with amazing specs, but i still find myself reaching for this chromebook every time. If your not playing AAA title games , or have a gaming pc and are just looking for a smaller machine to do your less demanding tasks, look no further.
Can I ask you to test something on your Chromebook? I'm planning on buying this Asus but I have a question I couldn't solve just by searching on Google
Really nice review. Wasn't even considering this device but I may have to take a good long look at it. I am pretty much set on a Chromebook Pro though. I need that pen.
Jordan Vasquez lol do you really NEED the pen? most people will be entertained by it for a short period of time and then never use it again. it's a gimmick. writing on the screen will never be as efficient as just typing.
Used the Surface Pro 4 with Surface Pen for a year in school and found it to be a great resource. You try typing Math and Science equations and see how much fun you have.
Its just one of those things where you really don't know how much easier it makes it until you actually use it. Now I don't see the Chromebook Pro replacing my SP4, but I know that if I am ever thrown into a situation where I need to do some Math work, it would be 100x easier to do with a pen. I would love to replace my SP4 with a Chromebook Pro as the SP4 has been pretty buggy in my experience, but nothing comes close to OneNote for taking notes. It really comes down to just a note taking app, if Google is serious about pushing the Pen in this Chromebook line, they NEED better app than Keep, or at least need to make it more compelling.
Jordan, have you tried Lecture Notes? It was the only reason I got the Galaxy Note 10 - for pen support on Lecture notes. I use it as a kind of whiteboard for teaching purposes mainly, but it's incredibly versatile. (However, it's not cross-platform, and, sadly, no syncing between devices though it has plenty of import/export options).
is bluetooth an issue? Many complaints about Chrome OS and consistent bluetooth quality on Reddit. I personally have not been able to get my Acer R13 to connect since I switched to the Beta channel in order to get Play Store access. I'm also experiencing the edges of the touch screen becoming unresponsive. I can scroll up and down on a page but I can't close or minimize the the window or app unless I hit the multiview key on the keyboard to close the app and restart. This happens frequently with the Mediatek chip. I'm tempted to skip all the ARM processors if the price is only another $100 for the Intels. The other issue is that 64gb of internal should be the starting point for a Chromebook because you frequently have to leave wifi range where having the extra space for in-app downloads of media content would be incredibly useful. For instance RUclips Red is not recognized as a mobile app on Chromebooks even though the app version number is the same for both Chromebook and Android phone and tablet. This means that being the Chromebook will not allow you download to the micro SD card.
Another great job. Thanks! Do you think that Acer will ever 'flip' their 15.6? I sure love those top firing speakers, but I'd love to add touch and more RAM to this form factor soon.
I got one of these at the weekend. I wanted a Pixelbook if I'm honest, but couldn't justify the price. Previously I'd stuck with an old HP11 which was getting slow. To say I like it is an understatement. Until Google start to advertise Chromebooks, and generally more in the UK, like Apple do, I don't think many people will know about them.
Can I ask you to test something on your Chromebook? I'm planning on buying this Asus but I have a question I couldn't solve just by searching on Google
i would still go for the c202, ive used a chromebook before for a few years, I sacrificed functionality for a cheapo pricetag. Dont understand why some would pay for this over any decent windows laptop at this price range. You get the chrome os experience on both mac and windows through the chrome browser. Why would you want only that and nothing else.
Hello, great video with awesome smooth camera move and clear sound. Keep it up! Hope machines like this make chromebook more famous all around the world!
He said in the video that the 8GB RAM variant will likely come with paired the core m7 processor and that we're unlikely to see it paired with the core m3 processor any time soon, if ever.
No, it won't. I got a confirmation from ASUS on Twitter that only the 4GB RAM variant will be available in North America. If you want the higher-end one, your best bet is to get from the UK or anywhere else.
Would it be easy to find a replacement screen shouldI accidentally drop it? I don't want to buy if a damaged screen will make me have to buy a whole new laptop
Question? Are you able to use a pen for this? Also does Microsoft office work on it too? Like if I don't only want to work with Google docs and I want tuse word, will I be able to use it as well??
on Amazon pre-order price of £599 www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-C302CA-GU010-Chromebook-12-5-Inch-Notebook/dp/B01MU9LS52/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484674938&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+chromebook+c302
Yeah, we agree the pricing structure in the UK is a little....Well messed up. Hopefully these manufacturers will see the value in your market and level the field.
Trust me, big portion of that goes to your government as VAT. In fact, if I buy this product from Amazon UK, it would probably cost me around £480, which is a fair price IMO. Yes, Amazon UK deducts VAT upon checkout if you're based out of the UK.
Gael, I have the C302 and I was initailly confused by the side volume button. However, when you Flip the device into tablet mode the keyboard doesn't work. So the physical volume button makes sense in this scenario.
So for clarification. The ASUS and the new Samsungs on the way will both be able to play android games? ie Clash of Clans. I have a Samsung Chromebook and a Nexus 9 currently. Would be a nice upgrade to knock out 2 birds with one stone. And make my current devices nice hand me downs. :-)
Eventually, yes. Right now, apps on this device work in Beta channel. Full roll out is coming. Samsung's new Chromebook will likely be your go-to if Android is a main selling point. It will be the flagship from Samsung/Google to promote Android Apps on Chromebooks.
How would I go about using this in college if tasks often ask for me to use Windows productivity apps such as Word,Excel,PowerPoint etc.? Is there a way around this? Does Chrome OS have its equivalents?
Does it now support Android apps? Can i add multiple folders on the main storage? Can it do Picture in Picture or multi window so i can multitask? Can i download and save a pdf or mp3 file from a website or email? Does it support microSD card as an external storage?
Does anyone know how well these Chromebooks work as an E-reader? As far as I know both Nook and Kindle have a web-reader extension for chrome and that you are able to download books and store them on the device. I was wondering if anyone has used these as a table using those webreaders?
Hi nice video! I have a question though I read here and there that it is still not possible to do basic usb printing on chrome OS. Is it still the case? This is the last point that makes me not buying chromebook. Thanks
just scored a Dell Chromebook 13, love it so far, but can't access my work email and shift schedule with chrome because it requires IE, any idea on how I can side load or install Internet Explorer on my Chromebook? Thanks in advance
Does it have Android Apps? If so, CrossOver www.androidpolice.com/2016/09/02/crossover-android-preview-runs-windows-apps-android-chromebooks-even-photoshop/
I'd prefer 1080p over 3:2 or 4:3 any day. Why would you buy this over a Toshiba Chromebook 2 2015? I've been running Android apps on it for a while now albeit without the touch screen.
dbjungle you'd buy this over the Toshiba because it has the new core m3 chip which stomps all over most other Chromebook CPUs while still going 9 hours on a charge.
I'm not entirely sure that the IPC boost of a Core M3 is worth the price difference when talking Chrome OS. Especially when the Broadwell version can be found as low as $300 pretty often. If you're new in the market for a Chromebook maybe it might make sense, but still given the price difference I think it should be carefully considered. I have been using Chrome OS for about 2 years now on 4 different devices so far and I have pretty mixed emotions on this one. I'm still hoping for an 8" Chrome OS tablet with Android apps personally. A companion device rather than a replacement device.
dblungle, I just upgraded my Acer C720 (Core i3, 4GB RAM) with the Asus C302. The performance is better (not huge difference, but better), the screen, fantastic backlit keyboard and superior thin and light aluminum build quality makes this a worthy upgrade. If it serves me as well as my Acer C720 did for 3+ years it's $500 well spent. (the Acer is still running strong).
Mine has not been so great. The silver keyboard deck cracked (left front corner on top), the right side charge Port fried and it has a glitch in common with first Chromebook which was the REASON I bought THIS ONE...it keeps failing to insert spaces as I type...it does it for no rhyme or reason (like NOW suddenly AGAIN)....pretty dissapointed as this was not a cheap machine as Chromebooks ....probably won't buy Azus again
I'm currently learning to code pretty extensively, however my 09 macbook is quickly dying and I don't want to pay to fix it. Has anybody on here wrote code on one of these? I'm assuming via Linux
your videos have more polish lately. good work
Purchase this 2nd hand as an upgrade to my smaller ASUS 214M.
Insane performance.
Funny enough no backlit keyboard on the Samsung is the main reason I am planning to go with the Asus. My current Chromebook doesn't have a backlit keyboard and it bothers me all the time.
I agree all higher-priced Chromebooks should absolutely have a backlit keyboard. that means more to me than any S Pen
Learn to type without it then.
Hahaha
I saw the lit keyboard. That is the deciding point for me. I will not buy a laptop without a lit keyboard.

is it worth in 2002? If not what would be the complementary product? Thank you
Another great job. Thanks!
Do you think that Acer will ever 'flip' their 15.6? I sure love those top firing speakers, but I'd love to add touch and more RAM to this form factor soon.
Steve Kluver there's acer Chromebook r13 that can flip...
Wojciech Banaś yes, and thank you, but we are wanting bigger Chromebooks here for work. Hopefully closer to the Acer 15.6 inch range.
Thoughts on using this device to edit videos/photos?
I got one of these at the weekend. I wanted a Pixelbook if I'm honest, but couldn't justify the price. Previously I'd stuck with an old HP11 which was getting slow. To say I like it is an understatement. Until Google start to advertise Chromebooks, and generally more in the UK, like Apple do, I don't think many people will know about them.
Can I ask you to test something on your Chromebook? I'm planning on buying this Asus but I have a question I couldn't solve just by searching on Google
can you really use all usb-type c chargers on this chromebook, or would it be best to use the one profided with the chromebook?
how’s the camera? i haven’t watched the whole vid i’m still watching but if you don’t review it how is it
i would still go for the c202, ive used a chromebook before for a few years, I sacrificed functionality for a cheapo pricetag.
Is any of the companies plan on doing a 15.6" version in the near future.
Did you go over how good is the camera? For skype calls and such
This is an excellent review, and really well articulated!
That was such a HQ video. Great job! Excellent scripting and delivery.
Would it be worth buying this chromebook in 2020?
How do I get android apps on this? I got this Chromebook and it is not giving me the options to download any google play apps. PLEASE HELP!
Attention: ASUS Global site states that there will be an 8GB RAM variant of C302, while ASUS USA site doesn't (only 4GB listed). What's the deal?
Are the RAM and flash memory expandable? They only sell the 4 gig version at my local best buy.
should I wait for the core i7 version?
Im currently using 13.3" scereen laptop, i want to buy this one but i just can't decide. Is it too small for a laptop?
you made me really want this but it's not out in the UK yet :/
Jamie Bergin good news. chromeunboxed.com/asus-chromebook-flip-c302-now-available-for-preorder-in-the-united-kingdom/
Chrome Unboxed ooh thanks for that. But £599? That sounds ridiculous..
on Amazon pre-order price of £599 www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-C302CA-GU010-Chromebook-12-5-Inch-Notebook/dp/B01MU9LS52/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1484674938&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+chromebook+c302
Yes, Amazon UK deducts VAT upon checkout if you're based out of the UK.
i own this model and the only thing i would change is the fact the keys dont light up
Bottom bezel is too big.
You really can't find a 2-in-1 with a small bottom bezel at the moment
Dufffaaa93 it's not.
Stop this obsession with bezels.
Trust me, only less intelligent people are the ones bragging about it.
B. A. -- You're insecure about your intellect.
if that's too thin the task bar will be too near to the hinge and that will be difficult for your hand to reach
It's not big...
It's thicc
I can't understand the use of the volume button on the left side of the device .... but this chromebook is awesome.
Thank you for your videos
Gael, I have the C302 and I was initailly confused by the side volume button. However, when you Flip the device into tablet mode the keyboard doesn't work. So the physical volume button makes sense in this scenario.
Oh ... of course !! Thank you Errol
I just bought one today, I hope this review still stands or is there something better at this price point.
Have you had a chance to use the MS Office Apps in Android mode on the Asus C302? I am interested in knowing how well they work.
Cool! Thanks for the info.
And where is the caps lock bottom on this computer🙆🏼♀️
How would I go about using this in college if tasks often ask for me to use Windows productivity apps such as Word,Excel,PowerPoint etc.? Is there a way around this? Does Chrome OS have its equivalents?
How are the speakers and volume level in this sucker?
Is there a way to use a stylus with this device?
Is this good for drawing programs like Clip studio paint?
looks like best buy updated to reflect 64gb. i ordered it myself
Thanks for this review. I decided to purchase based on the review...and I love this machine. Absolutely love it. Highly recommend.
How much is it now?
Which will work better as a tablet, asus c302 or samsung chromebook pro?
Hi, is this Chromebook compatible with microsoft office programs like word, exel and power point?
Do Microsoft OFfice products run good on this thing?
Does it now support Android apps? Can i add multiple folders on the main storage? Can it do Picture in Picture or multi window so i can multitask? Can i download and save a pdf or mp3 file from a website or email? Does it support microSD card as an external storage?
Does anyone know how well these Chromebooks work as an E-reader? As far as I know both Nook and Kindle have a web-reader extension for chrome and that you are able to download books and store them on the device. I was wondering if anyone has used these as a table using those webreaders?
Pls help! I just got the Asus Flip Chromebook and cannot figure out how to install Word. Thanks.
Soumaine can't be done. There are paid services that allow you to "stream" an ie session though
Time for work to upgrade the email system.
Does it have Android Apps? If so, CrossOver www.androidpolice.com/2016/09/02/crossover-android-preview-runs-windows-apps-android-chromebooks-even-photoshop/
Stephen Sharp Yes and no, no Google play store on the stable and beta channel but yes on the developer channel, lil buggy but it work relatively fine.
Try the IE Tab add-on for Chrome. ;)
as usual great review, I'll wait for your side by side review with the Samsung Pro.
How do you change the keyboard brightness?
is there a pen that can be used for it pls someone answer i have been searching for its pen since 2018
This chromebook never came with a pen, but you can use any stylus that's used for touchscreens and will still work.
nice review
What's with the huge bottom bezel O.o?
A companion device rather than a replacement device.
dbjungle I'm coming from a Acer C720P I bought back in 2014 which was haswell I believe? my C302 is snappier in a night and day kind of way.
dblungle, I just upgraded my Acer C720 (Core i3, 4GB RAM) with the Asus C302. The performance is better (not huge difference, but better), the screen, fantastic backlit keyboard and superior thin and light aluminum build quality makes this a worthy upgrade. If it serves me as well as my Acer C720 did for 3+ years it's $500 well spent. (the Acer is still running strong).
Errol Brown I upgraded my C720p to a Toshiba Chromebook 2 in December 2015. I haven't found anything else I desire on a chromebook since.
Hello , what about comparison with Acer R13 ? same level ?
Why couldn't you get the tablet mode to feel comfortable? Too thick and bulky?
Exactly the kind of video I was looking for, thanks a bunch
Great video Robbie!
Hey does it run Microsoft word, excel and ppt?
Watching video full hd or 4k is available ?
Can I ask if it is possible to move Android apps to an SD card on a Chromebook ? Thanks
Toan Maiquocsong not currently, this is by design (the Android OS is heavily sandboxed)
Mine has not been so great. The silver keyboard deck cracked (left front corner on top), the right side charge Port fried and it has a glitch in common with first Chromebook which was the REASON I bought THIS ONE...it keeps failing to insert spaces as I type...it does it for no rhyme or reason (like NOW suddenly AGAIN)....pretty dissapointed as this was not a cheap machine as Chromebooks ....probably won't buy Azus again
is it suitable for midi and running a business?
What is the OS?
I'm currently learning to code pretty extensively, however my 09 macbook is quickly dying and I don't want to pay to fix it. Has anybody on here wrote code on one of these? I'm assuming via Linux
