    Wonderful wonderful Dimi RIP - how terribly sad that he has left us but will forever be in our memories. Dreadfully sad that he died in his prime - but he has left us an enduring memory of (like Dame Joan Sutherland) that will forever be imprinted ad infinitum.

    If I didn't like a particular rendition of a an aria, I wouldn't even bother to write about it; I simply would move to the ones I liked. There are so many to choose from... I for one enjoyed this one :-)

    He was really magnificent. Otherworldly. His microphone is not hooked up properly in this video. There is an issue with the sound engineering. It happens, especially in these live preformances. please dont critisize him. Its not his fault.

    GEMÔNIAS
    Ah! Per sempre, ária da ópera I Puritani, do compositor
    Onde as sombras seguem outra direção: outro mundo.
    A pandemia, fazendo estragos no planeta, é por causa
    Da consciência planetária que faz o homem maltrapilho.
    O expurgo do joio embarcado em gemônias na jaula. (*)

    I dont even think Dmitri would consider himself a true verdi baritone, however he is a fantastic musician at his best.
    In Don Carlos while he didnt have quite the vocal size as some of the other cast he sang within himself, and was very compelling to watch.
    Arias like these are perfect for him. Now hes in his 40s he's terrific in roles like War and Peace. Plus the man is hot as can be.

    I'm new to all of this and this may be a dumb question but is he a lyric baritone?

    • @ivanmilicevic7193
      @ivanmilicevic7193 7 лет назад +4

      yes it is

    • @foki92
      @foki92 5 лет назад +4

      No, a lyric has a softer sound and higher range. He was at that point a cavalier baritone, but he most certainly was more than perfect for singing lyric stuff as well. As he aged his voice became a perfekt heroic-dramatic baritone. But a bass-baritone he was not. A Bass-baritone has a way lower range and sings entirely different roles. For example Bryn Terfel.

    Hvorostovsky's rich tone is sooo perfect for this aria. Is he on video doing this full role in I Puritani anywhere? (Unfortunately this character gets his best moments in the first 25 minutes of the opera so I wouldn't expect a ton...)

    @davidplayfair I would disagree. Though I (being a trained actor first and foremost!) would agree that acting often suffers, there are many great singers who are also consummate actors. Renee Fleming is quite good. Joyce DiDonato andJonas Kaufmann usually are decent. Also, for perhaps the greatest, I saw Elina Garanca sing Carmen and she was FANTASTIC. Wonderful bold choices, motions FULL of motivation, and wonderful tactics to achieve clear, visible objectives. A great mark of a good actor.

  • @SilverSingingMethod

    Well, when there is little to compare him to I can see why. And I highly doubt they would come out and say he is bad. There is a lot of politics behind the scenes and a lot of money. People can believe what they want, but you put him next to Merrill, Warren, Bastianini, Tibbett, Battistini etc. and it would be obvious.

  • @SilverSingingMethod

    I did not go to see him, OBVIOUSLY. I went to see other people that were in the same opera. Then why is he singing Verdi baritone roles if that is true? He just has a small voice that is even worse because of his technique.

    Not a true belcanto technique. Labored, stylistically incorrect. He growls his way through it. This requires a smooth, even, lyric, legato tone. His is too burly, with some impure vowels. I never liked this guy. He always comes across as being arrogant and pretentious with a too manufactured sounding voice. It just doesn't sound natural, easy and beautiful like the music demands.
