My grandmama always said, cows lay down before a heavy rain comes, because they stand to keep from the wet dirt forming a suction on their bodies making it hard for them to get up. She said if the cows are laying down, the fish won't be biting. Fish go deep before a storm hits. She was a real pioneer woman, mother of 12 children. They didn't have grocery stores back then. She knew when to plant her large garden, and how to read animals and weather.
It certainly looks like soon to be stormy weather. I'd be watching the weather report & the sky to see if it's going to turn into tornado weather. I think they've been a bit spoiled & are just enjoying the day. They deserve to be a bit spoiled considering how much joy they bring everyone. I really can't say anything because my cats are a bit spoiled too.
You remind me of Pawpaw! Riding his side by side out in the field, dog by his side, checking his cattle, looking at the grass and trees. Telling a few stories. Awesome!
They're content..their bellies are full..they are just resting, digesting their food...I grew up around cows all my life..this is just something they do...everyone has a routine...if their poop is fine so are they...❤ Lester you are such a good Dad...to everyone ❤
My grandma and grandpa always said if a cow is lying down it is a sign that the cow is CONTENTED. Don’t worry about it Lester, your cows are happy. 🐄 It’s like you at Thanksgiving - if your belly is full you get sleepy and just want to lay around on the couch.
I really love how the longhorns were listening to you. They are all enjoying themselves. Full tummies. They are foraging. I wouldn't worried. They are spoiled Lester. Stay strong Lester as you did when you did with LE and Lex and didn't like their vegetables.
Cattle have 3 behaviors to grazing.. grazing ,ruminating and idling. When belly's are full, their idle state in non winter season is usually laying down. So long as none show parasites in their manure, they are relaxing. This new place is has sustainable food, which was your purpose for buying the property. They may need a little less grain now that new grass is growing which has lots of nutrients.
It makes sense, but due to their weight, their hooves sink in the mud, while they are hefting their weight up, and broken legs are possible, and it makes it difficult to run from a predator if laying in mud.
I live in the uk - it's.... sort of true...........ish.........................kind of! (yeah, it's not always raining here - it just feels like it! 🤣) I'll shut up - we're all in danger of developing webbed feet and a quack!
Content cows. They have plenty of grass too. They may graze then rest, then graze then rest and repeat. They don't need grain right now. I would leave the grain out of their field for a while and monitor them. THEY are HAPPY COWS!
Lester hasn't anyone told you not to believe everything Google says...😅😅😅 their just resting in the shade because they are full....🤷♀️🤷♀️.....thanks for sharing them beautiful Longhorns and Gary.....😊❤
My Grandpa always said if the cows are laying down, you know the fish aren’t biting. Because a weather front is coming through! I think he said a low pressure front, but I can’t remember for sure. So you may want to check the weather.
They seem to me to be the most content herd I've ever seen. Plenty of green goodness to munch on and other stuff to forage and beautiful pond, a Daddy who loves them a lot and well, they like to take a load off and rest a bit, just like I do! They look wonderful to me, good job Lester!
Oh good grief Lester I think Google is wrong! I think all the cows are happy, full and at peace. They just want to rest and enjoy the sunshine. I don’t think they are lazy just happy. ❤️❤️
That there is some very, very contented bovine. Gary showed them his favorite corner and what's not to like.Quiet sheltered corner with dappled sunlight, soft dirt, soft tall grass to tickle their noses and relaxing birdsong.
Maybe from the warmer weather that temps rose so quickly? & maybe cuz they're awake all night? So the cows are laying around more during the day. 🤷 Or maybe just from the change in pastures, being in a new pasture & getting used to new things in the grass/soil? I believe the original saying is, You give a man a fish, he''ll eat for a day. If you teach a man to fish, he'll eat for a lifetime.
The cows have such wonderful grass to eat, that they are "resting their eyes" to get back to eating some good forage grass. When the weather is that warm already, they just chill and do more foraging in the cooler part of the day. Try every 3rd day feeding the grains. They look healthy and more than well cared for from all that greenery.
I think if the grass they are eating is healthy, they don't need as much to eat....the winter feed increases their body temperature, so with the heat, maybe they are just hot and tired....😂😂
I think maybe they're all too well fed n jus chillaxin it off!.. like most folks look after a Thanksgiving Dinner!!.. I really don't think they need the feed buggy, Lester 💞🙏💯👍
The Longhorns are safe, secure, fed, and know that they are loved. Resting from their food comas, chewing cud, social with the herd, and environmental influences, like rain. They are just happy and content. Living their best lives❤❤❤❤❤
Oh my gosh! Tex layed around and he is fine! My Grandpa was a homesteader and cattleman. He always said, he was happy because the cows were happy, healthy and fed fine, when they laid around. Cows will get their exercise when they move pastures. If you worry on the day for buggy in, move it to a different pasture. Till you were told that, you were happy when they were happy and content. Don't forget some of them are possibly pregnant! You don't need them to run the quarter mile everyday. I don't really see any alarming signs with them. But you can always contact the state University department (!) and ask. I always heard that cows will seek shelter in the woods from a storm when there isn't a barn close by. Merci ! Cheers and Love 💕🐕🐂
I grew up on a large farm, and every day the cows would find their favorite spot under some pine trees, and lay down and chew their cud. I think they have a habit, just like we all do. 😅
Loved the video! I agree with others that they are happy and living life at J❣️L Ranch. You saw that they had been to the barn so they are moving in the evening and I’m sure they are grazing along the way. They are all great looking cattle. With your weather warming up sooner than normal they probably don’t need the grains. They will need the mineral and salt blocks but can do their jobs for you without supplementing the corn and whatever other grains may be in your mix. We have much cooler weather here in the north over the winter and no longer farm but our pigs were the only critters to get grains come spring warm up. You will figure out what’s best for your babies, you always do. Look forward to the next adventure you take us on🥰
I'm from Texas and my experience with longhorns were skinny and ate all the time. I moved to Kansas and all the cows are so nourished on the grass here, they sit around and are fat and happy.
I'm Anita: I married a man from Up State New York and I'm born raised in Tenn. Raised in Tenn. many generations back. I asked; my husband "what does it mean when some cows lay down and the others stand"? He Said; "It going to be a Partical Rainy Day". Lol We didn't feed our cows in warm weather and they had grass to fed from". In Winter we fed grain and hay but not when there was grass to eat. Luv From Tenn. God Bless Y'all and God Bless All the Animals
I love when you pull up and open the truck door then you have your “happy cheerleader girls” just waiting to get out and follow you. Then Stella just looks at you as she’s sending you a telepathic message that “Daddy, don’t forget I need a helping hand”. They all love you so much.
Maybe they are up a lot when you aren't there. They are probably saying...why does he give us a hard time about a nap. Lol😂😂😂 seriously though they look happy
An old farmer, a long time ago, told me that when his cows lay down, it means rain is coming. Apparently it has something to do with the barometric pressure. But in your videos, I've seen your longhorns standing DURING the rain, so either that isn't true, or maybe just isn't true for longhorns?
Farm life doesn't gross me out ,I wish I could live that all again. I used to walk in the cow patties barefoot as a kid ,might still do it at 79 given the chance. I love the JL ranch property.
Your longhorn are all so beautiful. You treat your animals just like our children. I love it impressed what awesome heath their in love Longhorn Lesters Longhorn.❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤
Well as I heard once if its on the internet it has to be true right?? 😂 I think they are all satisfied and content.❤❤ Everything looks wonderful Lester! Hugs from Georgia ❤❤ DJ
Uncle Gary showed them where to find a piece of Paradise. I remember hearing the feed lady say move the UFO out a COUPLE of days out or more from the pasture.
I agree a nap is nice sometimes. Lester you should get a hammock for the L❤J Ranch. The longhorns are looking so good, I LOVE watching them. I've not been very healthy lately, but I can always depend on your videos ( and Jami's) making me smile ☺️ Thank you so much for that !
Growing up, I was always told that if cows are lying down by 3:00 in the afternoon, it means that they have good grazing and has been noted before, their bellies are full. They will feed again before dark, mostly because they enjoy it in addition to ensuring a comfortable night.
😂😂😂😂 they’re all just waiting you out Lester!!! Just like kids. They know you’re going to bring it back just not when!! Funny. They’re trying to train you!!! Great video
Grand Daddy owned a dairy farm for most of his life.... He said when the cows lay down break out the rain boots and umbrellas because the rain is coming. 🌧️☔
I grew up in a small village that had a few diary farms with Holstein cows, I don't remember seeing them laying down often, farmers would only feed them grain when they brought them in to milk whatever the weather, often a mile+ between farm and field's along the main roads,i miss the sight of seeing hundreds of cows(+bulls) coming along road near my house (where i grew up) and often in our front garden 😂and waiting for the bus going along behind very slowly lol, you don't see that nowadays, it's all been developed now 😢, I think your cow's have are just waiting for the easy meal 😊, I love all your longhorns+animals ♥️👋🇬🇧
Lester, good midday! I was so touched by the woman/lady that gave you $$ on your Live when you spoke about FB being down and facetiously my needing to go back to work. What a blessed, kind person she is and you let her be kind, but did tell everyone that you were joking . But if needed to you would work for your babies you would ♥️
They are lying around because their bellies are full. If you notice, they are also chewing cud. Yes, the one who mentioned the weather is also correct. The sky also is showing the possibility of heavy rains. Ruby wants her patch off.
I'm Anita: Poor Ruby! They will take it off when it's time for it to come off. I remember Lester or Jami saying; "It has to be on for so many days". I'm sure that is to make sure Pink Eye is Healed. Hope that helps
“Google said so!!” 😂😂 I always heard the rain thing too…. Of course if I lay down and don’t get up, it’s just because I am lazy!!😅😅. Don’t really get that chance too often! 😊❤
They found a great place of food that is filling their bellies. They are so content, no anxiety showing in ANY of them. They don't plan 'lay down protests' to get the feed buggy. They get their bellies full, lay down and chew their cud. Chewing cud is just as important as eating. Lester, your Longhorns are CONTENT & FULL. They are not wanting for anything.
I grew up on a dairy farm. The only time we worried about cows laying down, was after the the calved. If they do not get up quickly the can pass. We lost a couple of our favorite cows.
My grandmama always said, cows lay down before a heavy rain comes, because they stand to keep from the wet dirt forming a suction on their bodies making it hard for them to get up. Wow! Your grandmother sounds like an intelligent woman 😊
It’s supposed to rain a great deal on Friday.
Grandma is Wright and Google is wrong lol 😂
I grew up hearing the same fro. My grandmother, mom, and now find myself saying the same things, among other 'old wives tales'.
Cows laying around, eyes a little closed, chewing their cud…those are just contented cows. Siesta time!
You remind me of Pawpaw! Riding his side by side out in the field, dog by his side, checking his cattle, looking at the grass and trees. Telling a few stories. Awesome!
What can I say? Like father like son ❤
My Grandmother grew up on a farm in New York and her parents told her that when you see cows laying down its because it's going to rain 😂
This is also what i was told growing up.
Heard the same thing
Same here
I love Chrissy she sits there like she's in Charge of all she surveys
She is a Boss love her.❤
I think she has the purest soul of all the dogs, she is very special.
I love her too. Stella stole my heart on day one though. Both fortunate to live at LHL. Thanks for caring Lester. 🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️
I'm from the UK and was always told if a cow is lying around its cause its going to rain or there resting n chewing there cud and r content
They're content..their bellies are full..they are just resting, digesting their food...I grew up around cows all my life..this is just something they do...everyone has a routine...if their poop is fine so are they...❤ Lester you are such a good Dad...to everyone ❤
They are in a food coma.
@@gretchenbennett3554 YES!!!!
I agree with Karenglenn our cows did that too. 😊
Same. Our steers would eat till they were full, find a shady spot under a tree, lay down, and chew their cud. Happy as could be.
Lol those babies are healthy, loved beyond measure, happy and living their best life. They aren't dying they are just spoiled 😂
You are right about them being very spoiled ❤
But oh so loved
I looking for them all to jump on the side by side for an ride to the barn....lol jk
We're all dying day by day. Tell Google to "stick it"! 😅

My grandma and grandpa always said if a cow is lying down it is a sign that the cow is CONTENTED. Don’t worry about it Lester, your cows are happy. 🐄 It’s like you at Thanksgiving - if your belly is full you get sleepy and just want to lay around on the couch.
I just about choked on my coffee earlier when you said, “According to Google - you’re all dying. “
I choked on my coffee earlier when i searched it up 😳
I choked so hard I had to go lay down a while.🤪😜😦😂😂😂😂
The cows seem to love the same area that Little Gary would go to when he was recovering. That seems to be a safe place for them.
As a kid we used to drive by a cow farm daily and they were always laying under the trees chewing their cud.
That’s too cute
Lester, I think they are just living their best life! & they are happy!❤
I really love how the longhorns were listening to you. They are all enjoying themselves. Full tummies. They are foraging. I wouldn't worried. They are spoiled Lester. Stay strong Lester as you did when you did with LE and Lex and didn't like their vegetables.
😂
I’m going to have too! 😂😂
Thanks Annette.
I think the Cows love the woods so much because they LOVED being down by the river at LHL it's also cool and shady over there too ! 💯🙏❤🇺🇸
Gary looks so healthy - he spent a lot of time there when he was healing so maybe he told his friends about how nice it is there.
Cattle have 3 behaviors to grazing.. grazing ,ruminating and idling. When belly's are full, their idle state in non winter season is usually laying down. They’re probably just like us. Eat a good meal then you want to take a nap! 😂
Literally!!! 😂😂
I think they need a nap from eating so much, I think google is nuts!!!!
I thought they lay down to keep a warm, dry spot when it rains 🤔 😊 They certainly looked far to happy to be dying 😂 I so love them ❤️ ♥️ ❤
It makes sense, but due to their weight, their hooves sink in the mud, while they are hefting their weight up, and broken legs are possible, and it makes it difficult to run from a predator if laying in mud.
You are correct about that.. they look too happy to be dying 😅
@@SusieDaw-ix6pv Oh, thank you. I'm just going by the knowledge that I grew up with 🤗

Grand Daddy owned a dairy farm for most of his life.... He said when the cows lay down break out the rain boots and umbrellas because the rain is coming. 🌧️☔
