I have an BS in Petroleum Engineering with almost 40 years of engineering experience in the oil and gas industry. Twenty years international. If you're a US National DO NOT get a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Get a BS in CHE which is more flexible. Finding a job after 55 is almost impossible. Add in a hostile industry environment in the US you'll need to work internationally and the national companies will hire their nationals first. So think long and hard before you get a PE degree especially if you want a long term career.
Hello Oilfield Basics, I'm trying my best to get into this field and i am so motivated about it from a science perspective, am mainly a civil engineer student, but we got opportunity in our university to study oil and gas field for the whole semester with one professor who worked with schlumberger and other companies. Now with the COVID19 am forced to stay at home. What advice can you give me to really study oil and gas basics? Is it possible for me to find intership as a beginning to expend my knowledge? I really need a help from experts like you guys, thank you in advance.
I am Btech graduate 2016 passout in civil engineering. I really love the work of petroleum engineers. I want to become drilling engineer in future. I have got an offer from University of Aberdeen in MSc Petroleum engineering. I know I can achieve good grades, but it makes me little hesitant when it comes to securing job in any of the numerous firms in North sea. Neither do I know how to apply for jobs, nor do I have any students in touch for networking so as to know what the latest trend is My question is besides academic curriculum of 1 year, what are the other things to focus on to secure job before or within 3 months upon graduation from University. Of course we will have so many students who will be pursuing the same course and will have the same goal of grabbing a job in any of the 900 companies established in North sea. I want to know if applying online to a number of companies will help me get shortlisted and finally crack the interview to start the job as graduate trainee. What is the whole scenario apart from academics to secure a job. What are the necessary steps to be taken ?
Thanks for the question and for your interest in petroluem engineering. I don't know much at all about the North Sea or the market there, so I'll speak of the USA. The job market is hard for most industries right now, especially O&G. It's very cyclical and there's no way around that. Follow my advice in this video and that should help you stand out, but we're both small fish in a huge pond. There's likely to be times where we're out of work. Hopefully not though. In terms of getting a job, you can do some online applications, but I'm not fond of them at all and generally disregard them as a waste of time. You need to make connections within the companies that you're looking at and people in the industry in your local area. Maybe do some shadows, go to networking events, etc.. Once you've got the in it should be easier but still isnt a guarantee. Does this help?
I'll try. I'm gonna have to be pretty broad. Conventional wells have many more styles, design, completions, etc...because it's a broader category. Unconventionals are way more similar.

Hello! I recently graduated college to become a teacher. I was teaching for 6 months and realized that I wanted to go back to college and major in petroleum engineering. I feel motivated to go back and I'm exited! I am from West Texas and we have seen a radical change in the oil industry since the oil prices fell. I am starting my courses this summer but a lot of people are telling me to major in something else since all this is happening, do you think it is a good idea to continue this major? I feel that it will get better but people always telling me this has gotten to my head.
Hi Karina. I think you should finish what you started. Oil and Gas are here to stay. If you can't get a job domestically, you can always go to Canada, Australia, Middle East etc
I've got about 5 years of Coil Tubing experience. I fell in love with PE when I had to teach myself because no one else would. I am looking at going to school for Petrolium Engineering. Love yout channel. How do you feel job security is for engineers vs rig hands? Is there any advice you can give me while I look for a specific degree or school?
There are GIS analysts or techs in oil companies that are typically into lease, well digitization and at more advanced level, they develop GIS systems. Some geologists go in GIS side since it includes map creation and geologists are familiar in prod maps and heat map development. You dont need petroleum engineering for GIS. Today, IT degree with basic GIS and ESRI skills can help you get into GIS. Petro mostly work for upstream. GIS can work for upstream, midstream, land management, water and utility and distribution companies.

Thankfully practically zero. That would likely be the response of most PE's. There are definitely those who are more involved with modeling or programming who might use it. Not to say it would never come up, but it doesn't look to be too common. Having a basic understanding of it though is important, as nothing in our industry is really linear.

Do you advise I go for that ?
First, please realize that is it not just being good at math that will make a good engineer...in practice, math isn't usually what makes one great. However, in school, it's important to show your proficiency with it and we must be able to understand basic math principles and operations for the job. If you go into research, you would need to be much more proficient, however. Anyways, to do better grade-wise, I'd recommend checking out helpful RUclips channels and math websites like Khan Academy. Once you surpass Khan's level, look for other math professor videos on RUclips to reinforce your learning. Second, practice practice practice. Third, don't be afraid to visit your professor or professor's assistant and ask for help. Take good notes. Fourthly, utilize a strong friend group as I mentioned in the video. Try and do as good as you can, but keep in mind, the most important part is realizing what is happening, what it is useful for, etc... Knowing those things will be more helpful in the long run than knowing exactly how to do complex problems without error.
Will the adoption of Electric vehicles drive down the price of gasoline further..In future what is the use of petrol if all vehicles run on batteries .
Good questions. They're definitely hard to answer because I cannot predict the future. Less demand would indeed decrease the price if supply is held steady. However, who knows how fast (or complete) the transition would be and if batteries are even the best option. Note that however, right now in the US, most electricity is generated from natural gas...so perhaps gasoline and oil prices could go down but what about natural gas prices? Hard to tell. Energy systems are quite complex and hard to predict impacts.

After high school i chose working instead of going to college. Now that im 25 years old, i have decided i want to get into petroleum engineering. I want to move to Alaska for my career eventually Any ideas or suggestions you can throw my way?
Sounds like a cool story! Have fun in Alaska...unfortunately I don't know too much about Alaska operations. If I was you, I'd look up the companies that operate there and start getting on their radar. Reach out, make connections, see what their job offerings are, etc. Other than that, just go to school as anyone else does, but just target those companies for internships and jobs throughout college and beyond.
I’m 33 going back after being an Operations Specialist for Chevron for 6 years in the GOM...I hope I make it through school Cal 3 is kicking my ass but Alaska, Montana, one of the Dakotas would all be dream locations!!! Good luck buddy!!
Sir I’m currently doing my bachelors degree in petroleum engineering in India . I will graduate in May 2020 Is it a good option to do a masters degree in petroleum engineering in USA in fall 2021 Are the big companies in USA happy to hire international students in oil and gas

Hey I'm really hesitant to pick a major and pe is on top of my list but as I mention it I keep getting discouraged by all the "it's a male dominated field" "U won't be able to go to oil rigs" "there are no jobs" what's UR thoughts and advice on this im a woman btw
Thanks for reaching out. Don't let your gender change your career path. It's irrelevant. I know and work with many phenomenal women in the oilfield and they all love it. It comes down to your attitude and how you approach it. I just released a podcast on this very topic. Check out the oilfield basics discover podcast Ep 35. You can find it on our website www.OilfieldBasics.com or on your podcasting app. Also, check out the podcast Flipping the Barrel...this is a brand new podcast dedicated to women in oil and gas.
Also, number of jobs or access to sites isn't dependent on gender...what they're talking about is old biases and preconceived notions about women on site...typically thought of by older men. This is fading out industry wide, as it has no place in our industry. Either way...like I said in my last comment, it's your mindset and approach...attitude. Even if you run into that, you CAN change their mind and prove yourself to those select few. But it shouldnt hinder you in hiring at all. BTW we all face biases in all industries in some way. Engineers in general face it from operators (field guys) and there are many examples. Again, this is in every industry.

Thanks for the question. There's definitely scholarships available you just have to search for them. Many petroleum related professional organizations will offer scholarships. Also, maybe checkout SPE. They might have some too.
Tnx bro
I am studying petroleum and mining engineering , my cgpa is 2.80. Can i go to the abroad for higher study with that score? I am from bangladesh 🙂..
i m undergraduate of mining engineering.....first week actually......but so confused about the field.....i have some questions regarding mining engineering...but could not get its answers..........if i complete my bachelors in mining engineering....then can i do masters in petroleum engineering or mechanical engineering?
Should I pursue PE or Becoming a software engineer
Go with whichever one is your passion. Or combine them and work on oil and gas software. We could use some updated programs!
I'm a female student and want to become a petroleum engineer, what courses can I do ?
Don't take engineering.it will waste your time and money. You can take oil and gas diploma.
Hi Brookelynn! To get a petroleum engineering degree, you will need to attend a college that offers it. From there, they will have a specific list of requirements for the degree.
Do subsea Engineers work on oil rig along with petroleum engineer??
Is it a part of PE??
Not exactly sure man. Likely a PE background.
How do u find interest in petroleum engineering, I mean obviously the money is crazy but i don’t know...
Tbh the only reason I wanna study this is cuz of the money but another reason is helping you’re country
If I want to become a petroleum engineer but my school doesn’t offer than as a major, what engineering category should I major in then?
I would say the closest is chemical engineering.
What books to study in petroleum engineering
jonathan bellarby is good books
Sir I’m currently doing my bachelors degree in petroleum engineering in India . I will graduate in May 2020
Is it a good option to do a masters degree in petroleum engineering in USA in fall 2021
Are the big companies in USA happy to hire international students in oil and gas
A good resource for you might also be the video I posted recently on advice for international students. I would recommend the masters more for if you want to go into research or do some more advanced work. But yes, oil and gas companies hire internationals too.
If get job after bachelor better you can Pursue for master while doing job
Drilling Rig Online Courses but I’m an international student and eventually work in the US. So, can I go for masters directly
i m undergraduate of mining engineering.....first week actually......but so confused about the field.....i have some questions regarding mining engineering...but could not get its answers..........if i complete my bachelors in mining engineering....then can i do masters in petroleum engineering or mechanical engineering?
Hamza Khan getting admission is not a problem. But you should have a strong reason for doing it and show that in your SOP. I’m a Petroleum Engineer myself mining is more safer than petroleum. Only if you’re passionate about PE, do it or else both pay almost similar mining being more stable
Hi. Could you give me some piece of advice? I want to become petroleum engineer. But I want to work on office. I want to understand what it looks like. Can you describe me or maybe you have a video.
I'm confused about what you're actually referring to. You want to work with what?

I am a Civil Engineer & plan to get in Oil & Gas Masters in Canada, Is this a Good time to study oil & Gas engineering from job security point of view ?
No matter what our politicians campaign on, that oil is coming out of the ground
But it is being reported in media that oil industry around the world is going to face very difficult times and it will be quite difficult to find a job in Oil & Gas industry during this time... To what extend is that true ?
@@mujeebqureshi6351 I am an ignorant man but oil is the most important resource after water for all countries. If it's in the ground someone is getting it out or else the lights go off and the factories stop the cars stop and we are back in 1700's

can i become a pe even though i dont go to college
I wouldn't recommend trying. Either get the degree or do something a step down from engineering. For example, be an operator, a tech, or something else.
Good morning, i'm wondering how to get a job for the position of field engineer trainee in Slb or Halliburton or any good petroleum company in USA

Hi there
I am doing my engineering
My strong topics are : Thermodynamics, mathematics a bit of material balance....
I am currently in 2nd year and I need to decide between my minor between:
Petroleum or Food enginering
Please help...(urgently reply plz anyone who is a scholar in this field)
My major is chemical engineering.
Go with the one you're interested in most. Which industry would you rather work in if you had to chose?
@@OilfieldBasics dubai
Can i get internship in your field i am a student of PE and its my dream to work as an petroleum engineer, if possible then please allow me to do.
What do you mean "in my field?"
I mean the field where your working.
@@shahabshaikh23 I still don't understand if you mean the physical area that I work in (geographically) or if you just mean the oil and gas industry in general. Or if you mean the company I work for.
The company your working for.
@@shahabshaikh23 Sorry, they're not hiring right now.
Good day do u have an email or contact that i can get some advice ? im a petroleum engineering student at my final year and really need some advice please
