I watched the long video on this earlier, thanks for sharing the footage. After watching Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon and some other older stuff, I’m really glad to see content like this appearing. So much respect for analog video. Even with the grade there’s just something so distinct about it.
Hey thanks so much. When I was searching around the internet for how different film stocks and sizes look, I couldn’t find much. So now I have embarked on a path to put that information out there. Next week I am shooting a bunch of 35mm stocks in the studio. All for RUclips. Will be great.

Love that you're doing this. I still work with film once in a blue moon these days, but my first 12 years was damn near only film. I know you'll hit 500T based on this. But! I think you'll get a kick out of 250D, but don't sleep on 50D. It's slow, but extremely impressive. Particularly in the highlights.

it's just too nice. I think Yedlin's breakdown is actually misleading. Yedlin is a pro perfectionist and yes, you can get something to look exactly like film, but you need to be Yedlin. From what it seems the footage came out like this almost straight out the gate, and it's nicer than most digital you see on the internet.
the nice part about film is that you really dont need to do much with it to have good looking results, it feels natural and looks accurate right out of the gate. the grade on this for example is very simple. also, you can match them, just requires putting in a little bit of work and some weird tests. this is what I am working on. I have a nice match at the moment. stay tuned.
I don't think you need to be Yedlin, there are many awesome colorists doing this stuff already. Killers of the Flower Moon is a good example. Also Uncut Gems had some film Emulation stuff going on for the night scenes. I never guessed or thought about it in the cinema.

😂 worth it. the latitude is definitely great. it is nice to push things around in resolve. also, this was all shot without an 85 filter (intentionally), so all the footage was very blue and corrected easily in post!

Hi Blaine, first thanks for the content, but i need your help. I wanna buy a high end cinema camera, i am between the alexa mini, and the alexa mini LF , and the 35, which one would you recommed?
LF is my choice. I could also consider a mini if price was right. Depending on your market and what you want to use the camera for (do you want to shoot with it or rent it out?) a 35 could do well since it is the newest.

I would recommend an alexa over the Venice. That is my preference.

What is the difference in color between 250d, 200t and 500t
at their cores.. 200t and 500t are tungsten balanced stocks, and 250d is daylight. so 250d will look normal outside, and 200t/500t will look very blue outside, but normal under tungsten light. 200t and 500t also have slightly different colors and contrast between the 2. I need to look into my project to really be able to describe that difference, but can do that and report back if you want.

Yo! You could make it in post I suppose. I could send you a start stop from the film and you could use it, or at least use it to help you re make it.
You don’t need to shoot film - technology has got us to a place with incredible raw formats where we can replicate film perfectly - even exceed the film look - NOT.
Few people can recreate the look of film perfectly, specially the way it renders detail
Unless you're Steve Yedlin you're just not getting there
But I agree that no one without the budget needs to go broke shooting film
I like the film. but I also like the digital. I have put in a lot of work to get the look of digital where I want it. that being said, I do like seeing the film, it kind of just looks nice right away. the Alexa looks nice right away too.
@@BlaineWestropp1 I love film - has the best look out of all formats. However recently I saw the new Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny and was 100% sure it was film - turned out it was shot on the Alexa LF - I'd recommend checking that film out just to see the grade - it's insane!
Okay as a film noob: This stock is designed to be Tungsten balanced. How did you get it to balance to daylight? Did you just slap on a filter to the mattebox or is this some developing madness that can only be done to film in the printing process?

hey thanks so much! I shot this without the filter. so the footage is very blue. I then corrected this in the grade. this will yield slightly different results than if the filter was used, or if you shot daylight film, I wanted those slightly different results.

Hey brother hope all is well. Appreciate this. I was wondering if you have enough footage from your test that you can do a video showing a grading pipeline (of course… whatever you would do… be it dehancer or whatever you’d use IF you were going this route)… and the video would be you showing how close you can get the digital footage to match the film footage…. I think the video would do well and perhaps you’d have a sellable power grade that comes out of it?

@@BlaineWestropp1 thank you! I think a lot of people are interested in this! I have been non stop lens testing for 2 weeks. Finally at the tail end of finalizing this set. Next phase will be building some looks we can pull out of the set and would def be looking at a couple of film looks!
cool! what lenses are you testing? are you building a set?
Yes building a Japanese vintage set from the 70s. What we've found is that there are some lenses from different brands that match or require only a very small white balance nudge. Perhaps the result of some focal lengths being outsourced to other brands for manufacturing or perhaps for the glass back then which makes the coatings match from multiple brands on SOME different focal length...? Long story long... what this means is we are building a matching set where each focal length is stunning and has that magic but also matches the look and magic found in other focal lengths in the set... the reason for the effort we are going through is that, while we have found lenses we fall in love with WITHIN a branded a set... it seems each vintage set seems to have a sweet spot for focal length and toward the long end or the short end of the focal lengths... the magic subsides. What we are working through is building a set with that magic across the whole set. It requires you to kind of pick a lens to "anchor" the set... then see which focal lengths in that set match the magic... and those that don't... you gotta try and find lenses from that era... in the missing focal ranges... that match the magic and the colors. Lol... a long process and also something you need human subjects and also objects and light to really find the magic (can't just shoot test charts). But the result is that we are getting to a set that no matter the focal length... we look at the image and just can't explain the magic... but it's on the screen and the image is something special. The work is worth it... because while I love that certain sets have a sweet spot for the magic (think Flektogons... the magic is at the wide end)... well... for true freedom of creativity and not being reluctant to change focal length when appropriate for fear of losing that magic... we want that across the whole set. It's a process but the benefit will be well worth it. We are 90% done. Just working on one last focal length and nailing down the macro choice. Would it be possible to make/sell those film transitions between each shot?
I think something similar could be made, I could provide the flashes. the best way to make them is to shoot a white/grey wall and start stop the camera in different lighting conditions. or, I could provide what I have and just cut out any frames where what I shot is visible, because the film starts getting over exposed as you start and stop, so there's frames where you can see what was in front of the lens. let me take a closer look and report back.

what the print you choosen for it?
im not into film if you dont need to print it than sorry haha
for this, there is no print. this was scanned to a hard drive. you can of course print it back to film (which I, and many others, would choose 2383), and then scan that back onto the hard drive again. This is something I will do here. It is pretty cool and you can do it with digital footage too.

SO Jealous. What was the processing.. process like?
definitely a fun time. have more on the way :) after shooting I took the film to a lab in NYC. there you fill out some paperwork with how you would like it to be processed and what you would like back in terms of file size. I left a hard drive there and 3 days later picked up the film and the hard drive. they supply low res graded files, and 6.5k untouched files. You can choose which resolution and codec you want. From there, I bring it into resolve and grade it!

Bruh ... why why why ... now google search history cohosts of pricing out film shots ... haha .. nah but g shit .. this is insane .. don't care what anyone says bets part of the film creation process is not just the look cause you can semi cheat that but its the preproduction . thats really imo where the gems is .. having to be intentional with the vision vs spray and pray!
