Mind you, I didn't say 'in order to win' because I've never really been concerned with winning. The only thing I want is a back-and-forth competition. Even if I'm fighting a losing battle I at least want to add something to the board without playing cards everyone has seen and are tired of seeing. I want to be able to show my opponent more than one card, so they might pick up on the fact that my deck has a theme I hand picked. And players combo-ing into a field that's overkill is a fair critique. It never feels good to be on the receiving end, and I have definitely seen combos that exceed the daily challenge numbers for synchros. Some opponents have incredible shutdown cards like Baronne de Fleur and 2 other high attack monsters while I have one set card, three cards in my hand, and 2400 LP... they're still combo-ing. Even if I did have a trick up my sleeve with that setup, how much of a setback is it actually going to be to a pro player against a clear beginner like me? What I am going to do? Deal 1000 damage to a spotless 8000 LP counter? Clear the board of these monsters with a card effect that somehow bypasses the negation effects? What does that really change? It only amounts to a dent, a flesh wound. Is really such a bad thing to come out of a duel scathed that players really can never afford to take chances on people? It's sad.

I liked that card game but I couldn't find people to play it with me irl. So fast forward many years later and this game has completely taken the 'Special' out of Special Summon. I'm frustrated that 'my' turn doesn't truly belong to me. I miss the back-and-forth tug of war that could happen over the course of 6-7 turns at a casual level. Konami has made over 10,000 YGO cards and only about 100 of them seem viable. Modern players may like the game as it is now, and while I honestly can't say I understand why, I do know that there is a strong possibility that I'm wanting a card game experience that hasn't existed in close to 18 years.
