Doing a dead-stick landing with a plane like that you have act quickly and choose among limited options. Pulling up over the trees could have resulted in a stall and a bad crash.
Nothing like running out of fuel and finding out your jet doesn’t make a very good glider. Been there before with LVC on my EDF Viper stretching the flight time too long.

My question is why didn't they land immediately after seeing a partial engine failure? I'm speaking as a clueless guy but if I saw issues like that just after take off, I'd land asap!
Is it just the phone I am watching it on or does the footage go all CGI just before the trees as he is coming in to land? Looks a bit like the simulator I use when I fly too close to trees and the plane seems to merge with the trees but doesn't crash.
It is obvious what happened. The acrobatics was too much for the pilot, too many G's and the pilot blacked out. This is really scary because my brother died the exact same way. Or maybe not.

Turbine failure rather than out of fuel, the bits flying out were clearly visible ⚠️
