This video reminds us how fast life goes by. I was only 26 when this song was released and now I'm 50.
18 when this came out, parents were middle aged then, now *I* am middle-aged and my parents are elderly, and this now hits in a whole different way. If that's not the definition of art i don't know what is
I was 10 when this came out, now I'm 34 and neither of my parents are with me anymore. It's beautiful to see how a videoclip I thought was strange as a kid, now hits home harder than any hammer could.
I am 46. This hit VERY different to when I first heard this
Mr. Moby, if you ever read this please understand you that you earned another fan today. I'm just a man, age 64, and rarely weep anymore, yet found my face wet. I may just understand. This is an incredible creation. Thank you very much. Whether here or the next life, I hope to meet one day.

Such a masterpiece. Dark, honest, moving.
That quick smirk when he looks at his parents photo gets me teary eyed every time.
I remember when this came out on VH1 and MTV.
I remember too, I was in Highschool
This music video really hits home especially the older that I get. The people, places, and events in my life that I share with so many people will one day only exist in my memories. The older you get the sadder life becomes when your loved ones are no longer here and the generations before you start to disappear. Treasure your life and the people in it, because one day we will all be just a faded memory. 😔❤️😎
Very true, strongly agree but sad to admit it is so easy to forget how important this is as go through life.
I'm heading over to eulogize my older brother today, so true..
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your brother. 😔

Don't forget thank him every day for our debt he paid in full

I’m only 28 and I feel this.
The coolest thing about this song is that the woman singing is actually blues singer Vera Hall, from a recording made in 1937.

Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn... Pink Floyd remembers.
Just rewatched this beloved video again crying
and was reminded of being with my father when he passed April 4 , 2024 ...
For most of my life we didn't have much in COMMON...
so we weren't very close and he lived far away , but he did what he could to support us.
And I KNOW he loved me .
I'm 55 , my dad was 80 years old .
He was living in an Alzheimer's home near Nashville .
More recently he had broken his hip for the second time and it was not surgically fixable .
So strong pain meds were given ; which often causes rapid deterioration in older men .
He developed pneumonia . and hospice care was soon initiated .
That's when my step sister messaged me that I may want to visit as it wasn't looking good.
The day I arrived he was very frail ;
~ his body reminded me of an artistic drawing of a cadaver.
That's how close to death he was.
Nurse got him to consciousness and to open his squinting eyes ;
The nurse said :" for you " to me ...
I walked over into his line of sight and said ": Hi dad ; It's Doug ... your son ... " ...
and I saw that slight glimmer of delighted recognition he gave me three years ago .
THIS was all I wanted . For him to know I was there .
The next morning when we arrived his body was forcibly breathing fast ;
I noted his cheeks were even rosy red ...
deceivingly healthy looking compared to his pallor the day before
The rosy cheeks were actually from his body overworking / unable to get oxygen to his lungs ... he was in the end stages
He took less frequent breaths ... for about an hour
until
absolute stillness and quiet
I said to my stepsister
" I think he's in the light now "
I'll treasure that time with him forever.
Our COMMONALITY was now me being with him as he faced death without fear .
Can't get closer than that ... "

I held my grandmother's hand as she peacefully passed away yesterday at the age of 91. I've always liked this song, but I have never seen the music video. I can't explain the mix of emotions I am feeling right now, having just seen it for the first time.
Its quite disturbing
Blessings to you both
@@genevievemezzatesta4868 Thank you for the kind words. Wishing you all the best in return.
@@paulbirkbeck1790 it is disturbing, and beautiful, and terrifying, and comforting. It makes me feel good and bad simultaneously. I think these feelings are part of our journey as living things that know we will die one day. The older I get, the more I just want to hug my family.
Lost my father when I was 19 he was 53 one day I went to lift him he became dead weight ripped my pants trying to carry him back to bed. He was dying I was screaming not to go hang on to looking him in the eyes and comforting him saying let go. His last breathe of life was looking me in my eyes. That day impacted my life in a very huge manner and not for good. Followed sorrow no father figure mom never remarried just went down hill brother down hill. He would have stopped alot of the bad that came after. I'm almost 40 now and never a day goes by I don't think how much I miss him. Before he got so sick he was bed ridden we watched the movie stand by me and when that song came on at the end we both looked at each other I grabbed his hand and sat there in silence knowing what was coming. I'm in tears now man loosing someone so close is so hard
What a tribute to the woman singing, Vera Hall from 1937.
Thank you Moby for doing such justice to this!
Thank you. I always wondered.
WTF? I don't hear no one but Moby singing, unless it is the background??

He's not actually singing the song. He sampled the hook. And put a dope beat to it. There's a really good story behind the creation of this album. I heard it on a podcast recently. Something about him being broke and sleeping on friends couches at the time. And a friend lends him a box set of cds with a bunch of old southern songs. He ended up sampling a bunch of those songs and created the album that made him famous.

A few years ago, I created a playlist for myself with like 800 songs. But I never knew all of them ,because i kind of just throwing everything in it. So about a week ago I decided I won't pick music, I will let it play all 800. I put a paper on the table, and started drawing. As usual night activity, when I can't sleep. 80 minutes in, this song popped up. I raised my eyebrows, cuz i never heard it before. Nor that i knew it was there. So I typed into youtube, and started the video. Honestly, 5 seconds in I started crying, because i sort of knew what I will see. But I'd never imagine seeing this level of realism. I wasn't prepared for this. Then I watched further. And it became more and more depressing to me, because a lot of my relatives passed away very early, when I was younger. I only have 1 grandmother now, besides my mom and dad, and she's in a place like in the video right now. We visit her often, but sometimes she's not recognizing us anymore. She's 94. She was always happy, and she was very active, even in her 80's. Now she's in a wheelchair all day in the building, and I feel so bad for her. I love her....
...(I hate to say it, but) if it's her time to leave this world, and me, and my parents,... I will know, where to find this true art of a music. ❤ and if it's my time, i want this song, to play on my funeral...
That part where he says
Oh Lordy, Lord, trouble so hard
Oh Lordy, Lord, trouble so hard
Don't nobody know my troubles but God

@@raoulduke8794 I can't show you absolutely proof that we do live on, but I would love you to show me absolutely proof that we don't. Both sides are a belief. The belief that we don't is relatively new, held by a minority, not provable so why believe it?
@@joshuaWEC its not new, there are ancient greek philosophers who denounce gods and life after death etc. plus the burden of proof is on the one making the claim, since there was nothing before birth, no signs of anyone living on after death, the logical claim is nothing, if you say otherwise, you are burdened with having to prove your claim.

About 10 years ago a bunch of us were just walking around aimlessly on some really good acid, and for some really odd reason the whole time this song was stuck in my head. We ended up walking into a 24hr grocery store and this was playing, and mind was blown. I'm sure somebody can understand.
+sc0tte1 I've never taken acid and I can very much relate.
I too have experienced seemingly impossible synchronicities while on acid but also while sober if I pay close attention to the moment. It induces a feeling that everything is gonna be ok
I am with you on that on brother......acid makes the world a nicer place
reuben gouldin Imagine a day where everyone in the whole world was on a slight acid trip? Nothing super strong, just the laughing hysterically type of buzz where reality is still reality-ish...that would be awesome, everyone would unite as brothers and sisters.
+sc0tte1 Look up cursed bread of Pont Saint Esprit. I think I got the spelling right. It's about an entire French city being administered a small dose of acid on bread. The town collecitvely tripped balls for a bit. I believe it's also been called Saint Anthony's Fire. I read about it in a book about the history of acid. There are some stories of people eating moldy rye bread, which apparently is like the base of acid or something. The other story is that it was a CIA experiment. Interesting shit.

two of past crushes when i was younger in this video. Christina Ricci and Fairuza Balk. Now im an old man like Moby :(
Moby envisioned his own future alone, abandoned or worst forgotten without his music. I'm glad that in his life (according to his official Instagram) he enjoys the warm company of pets. Just a dog or cat, nothing fancy like a Fox or a Polar bear! For me he's not a little idiot, at all and caring about the animal rights is everyone's duty.
All these years later and I still love this video, the imagery is incredible. Love coming back to watch it.
I love this song, but every time I watch the video - even as a grown man - it brings tears to my eyes! I suppose having elderly parents (especially when one of them has already died) doesn't really help.
i read a report that some doctors are worried that the united states will have a depression crisis because to many kids take care of their parents "me included" and it ends up weighing on people. i think any and all people going into the medical field should have to spend have the time in school and the other would be to help elderly and the broken.
As if the world isn't more ducked up than it already is!!!!!! I'm ready for heaven!
Yes, the weight of taking care of elderly parents is hard, I know, doing so same. Do not be depressed - you are doing the right thing, may be thankless and draining, but you are fulfilling a part of a greater destiny. I always think of how long my parents took care of me, raising me and while they were also taking care of my grandparents, I know. I don't need God to remind of me of those years - I believe in our duty, repaying what life has given us.
gr8zenzilla True. I don't do it for God, I do it for them. I don't need no repayment from any deity.
June 06 fucking word. they raised you to be better than them... happier.
