As a travel agent that I am, I can tell you that now NCL is having not only studio cabins, but also Ocean view and balcony cabins for solo travelers and that is amazing. I am single and retired from teaching, but most of my friends are still working so I have to travel solo sometimes. This will be a relief. I will be able to sit in my balcony without paying the price of two people.
Yeah, I’ve heard this - it’s such good news! I’ll be really interested to see what the NCL solo rooms look like that aren’t inside studios, and how they evolve the concept over the next few years!
I paid the $250 NCL "CruiseNext" deposit. Turns out they "match it" ONLY if you (as a SOLO traveler) book a BALCONY. THAT costs an extra $1,000 ! Not on my S.S. income. Make sure you GET A COPY of any contract you're signing
What I particularly appreciate about NCL is that solos are embraced, not just tolerated. You can feel the difference in how you're treated. It's an easy way for people to start cruising on their own since NCL offers that support system. I do like the Studio cabins but just booked a Solo Interior on Escape's transatlantic next fall - a little more expensive than the Studio but more room and I still get the free espresso in the Studio Lounge!
Yes yes yes, big up Norwegian! So good their offering. Looking at a 7 day New England cruise for September on Breakaway, though it seems like the studios are more expensive than the new solos, which work out at 65% on average. As you say Fraser, normally 50% for a studio.
totally agreed - the crew I interacted with on my spontaneous-last-minute Alaska cruise were genuinely and positively intrigued, welcoming and attentive. I didn't attend any of the solo meetups on this sailing, but I didn't know these were structured and organised, so will deffos get more involved on my upcoming transatlantic journey.
I think this is a cool option for friends traveling together. I think there is something to be said about having a private room and being able to hang out when you want. I have cruised alone with a group of friends and I was very thankful to have my own space to retreat to.
I agree with you 100% Fraser about the benefits of cruising solo on NCL.I was on Norwegian Breakaway in 2013 in a solo studio and met so many people. I have also cruised Norwegian in a balcony and they still gave me access to the studio lounge when I asked at Guest Services.
Ah, that’s great to know they still have you access - that didn’t happen on my cruise though, so must depends who you speak to. I’m so glad you had a great experience on Breakaway too - I was so impressed! Thanks for watching!
They seem to do it right! I love the different lighting, plus the fact that there is a dedicated host with planned events. Thanks for this one, Fraser!
Mariia was amazing. I did my first solo over Thanksgiving. The one thing I tell everyone is I traveled solo but never felt alone. Loved my studio cabin too. Can’t wait for my second solo cruise on the Getaway.
I did a solo cruise on the Escape to Canada & New England in October, but I didn't get a studio cabin because getting an inside cabin with the solo supplement was hundreds of dollars cheaper. I enjoyed having a bigger room and saving some money as well. I'll consider getting a studio cabin on my next cruise if the price is right. Having access to the studio lounge seems like a plus.
Yeah, I have heard that the pricing can be interesting for the solo cabins vs regular cabins - we have this issue in the U.K. too as it operates on a ‘supply and demand’ basis! Thanks so much for watching!
I just booked a solo inside cabin on Escape (wanted to book a studio but none were available) and during the booking it said it included access to the solo lounge even though I hadn't booked a studio. The room is on deck 11 and adjacent to the studios on the same floor. I plan to visit the solo lounge and will follow up that it works or not but according to Norwegians site it should. I'll probably make a mock booking in the next couple days and screenshot it to take with me.
Oh, amazing! Yeah, I love solo cruising, but was also very nervous before my first. Chill, you’ll have a ball! I also vlog my cruises - maybe I went to some of your ports - my videos might help further!
Ahh, hopefully you’ll find my Escape vlogs useful - watch this space - they’re a few months away still! Thanks for watching, James - great choice for your first solo!
I went cruising for my first time aboard the Getaway, solo in 2024. I enjoyed everything about the 10 day experience. Never felt " singled out" for being single .
Going on my first cruise and doing it solo because my hubby has to work. Doing 14 day TA on NCL Escape inside solo cabin. Your video is giving me some ease of mind until I see the toilet area. Will make the best of everything. Thanks for your video to calm my first time jitters!
That's great that NCL have solo program. I plan on being solo cruiser in a year or two and don't want to be too lonely on a cruise. Thanks Norwegian 🙏🙏🙂☺️🫠
Thanks for the video. I must admit this cabin is much too small for me. I would prefer a full-sized inside cabin. Plus, you really have to follow the prices on NCL after you book. For instance, I originally booked an inside cabin on the NCL Bliss. 2 months later the prices for the balcony cabins dropped, but the inside prices remained unchanged. Therefore, I was able to rebook and upgrade to a balcony cabin for only an additional $100. I also noticed solo cabins can be more expensive than being one person in a regular inside cabin. Bottom line, Buyer Be Ware!
Heather, great comment - totally agree that you often need to be pretty savvy following your booking. Also completely appreciate wanting more room than this cabin offers - I find it good value for money, but some people would go insane in here, haha! Thanks for watching!!
I am going on the Joy in April. I got a Studio Balcony unit. I am looking forward to the experience. Your experience has me enthused, especially about size, and quality sleep that I should be able to get. It goes to show that a solo person doesn't need a lot of space to be comfortable. It looks as though Norwegian has done it right, and is going after the solo cruiser.
Hey, thanks so much for the positive note - I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! If you’re interested, I also have a review of the solo cabin specifically - you can find it here, or just search on my channel under NCL! IS IT WORTH IT? Studio Solo Cabin Tour - Norwegian Escape - Full Room Tour - 4K HD #cruise ruclips.net/video/aAgqJsQRQ3g/видео.html
This should be linked on the NCL website. I got wayyyy more answers from this video than any of their content. This makes me feel wayyy more confident and excited about this.
did the Encore solo room. Love the room and it's so quiet inside. and yes NCL has expended their solo program, saving the solo cruiser hundreds over a regular cabin. doing a 'solo' room on an older ship this fall and hope to move up to a 'solo' balcony in the future.
@@FraserAtSea yup, it's a great way, for us introverts, to easy into cruising. I will see how they are on an older smaller ship this fall when I do New England. I plan on doing a cruise a year until I get bored of it. More about my Epic, 10K+ mile road trips, but willing to be an addict cruiser.
Solo is the last hope for NCL to compensate for the overall customer satisfaction disaster. Watch some NCL cruise vlogs - watch for "food decline" and on some ships alarming "hygienic" situations.
This is good to hear! I am booked in a studio on Viva in 2025 - it was cheapest solo option on this particular cruise. I have been wanting to try NCl studios & your video is really helpful.
Last 2 cruises Solo on NCL. Five stars all around. Cabin had plenty of room. Lounge was great and met lots of nice people. Never felt closed on. Booked next 2 solo. DO IT!!
Hi Fraser, thank you so much for this video and your timing is really great! Just 2 hours ago I sent an email to NCL for some extra info about a black friday offer for a studio cabin. If it turns out the way I expect I will book a studio and see how I like the space. The contacts with other solo's is really important to make a perfect cruise.
Hey, thanks so much - really glad you found this one useful! I really do enjoy cruising solo with NCL, so it’s always good to hear more people giving it a try! I agree that contact is key - I struggled with this on some ships this year, but LOVE the aspect of the lounge. Thanks for watching!!
Have cruised on the Breakaway in a Solo cabin, and will again on the Prima soon. One advantage of the Studio suites is the private enclave setting. No kids in the hallway, no families dragging 8 suitcases out of their rooms. The only way that my experience could have improved was if we had an elevator that connected us to the main areas. Our Solo traveler's meetings were in one of the bars rather than the lounge so 'solo adult' travelers, and 3rd wheel travelers could easily attend. Our Solo Host made sure that we felt VIP, that we didn't wait in line for shows, and had reservations for the specialty dining we wanted, so long as we had a few Solo travelers going together.
Ahh, sounds like you also had a great experience - sounds great! They’ve got solo travelling nailed, don’t they? Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this comment!!
Norwegian Joy offered me solo cabin but they do not have the studio lounge yet. It was still a great cruise, but I did not get to really meet anyone because I did show up at the bar at 5 PM and actually walked out because I am not that forward and had no clue who was solo and who wasn’t. All in all hopefully all of Norwegian goes this way because it is great. Anyway they did offer me a better price and I ended up having a really nice room. I hope to enjoy your future solo cruise on Norwegian late next year. Hoping that other cruise lines start offering this.
Ahh, glad to hear it went well, even if the trip to the bar was a little awkward - I feel for you there. I agree - these studio rooms and lounges are fantastic! Thanks a lot for supporting my channel by watching and commenting - it’s hugely appreciated! ❤️ 😊
I'm a big NCL Solo traveler. I'm Sapphire with NCL. Love NCL! I'm glad that you portrayed the solo experience so well is this video. One tip, when the concierge was setting the meetup times for 5:00 p.m. each night, you all could have asked her to change it to later. They will do that for certain days that are late return times from port or for everyday. 🤗
Hey, thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Glad you enjoyed the video, and excellent tip! I did actually ask, but most others were happy with the earlier slot. In hindsight, the introverted side of me was happy dining just me, ha! Thanks again for watching - there’s a full vlog series coming from my time with NCL if you’re interested :)
@@FraserAtSea You're welcome and thanks I'll check it out. I subscribed.🤗So odd that the others didn't want to have the meetups later on the days that you had a long port day. Maybe some of those people were ones that never get off the ship.😂
Hi, taking my first solo cruise on the breakaway in May. This will be my first time on my own on a cruise ship. I also have a disability so it is going to make things interesting. I'm all for meeting folk but for me solo means solo. I don't want my entire cruise structured by some host. I have booked one of the studios but at a glance on the web site today there were some deals to be had which makes me think I should have waited. Regardless I'm all paid up and ready to go.
Nice ship choice - haven’t been on Breakaway, but heard only good things! Don’t worry - if you don’t want the ‘support’ from the host, you absolutely don’t need it - I just like it because it helps me meet people - that’s all! Have a great trip!!
Brilliant Video Fraser, really informative and im sure will reassure anyone thinking of booking a Solo Cruise. Thanks so much Wow Wow Wow!! what a veiw of New York Skyline how amazing seeing the Statue of Liberty from the ship. ❤❤
Your observation should also be a warning sign. Honest blogs that are posted for the purpose of "information" and their research take up most of the time to produce. Those that are presented in top professional quality fall into the category of "infomercials" usually published by the PR department of the company that is advertising - covered up as a customer-posted vlog.
It's so interesting to me when you said that you would tend to eat more in the dining room vs the buffet. I did a cruise a few months ago (Carnival Panorama) and I intentionally ate as much meals as possible in the dining room because I felt like the portions they give out seem smaller than whatever I might load my plate with on the Lido deck.
Ah, that’s such an interesting point! I like that I can focus on salads etc up at the Lido, rather than the extra stuff that comes on the rich dining room plates. Mind you, if I’m on for 7 nights, I’m at both every day, haha 😂
Even on the Sun, (small & old NCL) despite no solo lounge, had a solo cruise director, solo meetings, solo's get to go to MDH w/o waiting. I had a solo balcony which made the 21 day panama canal cruise so delightful as well! I picked the Sun because it is the smaller ship, & allegedly the Senior ship, yes, us 60-70 yr olds were the young crowd! Very few kids hardly noticed them at all the entire cruise this is because there are no slides, or racetrack on the ship. There were ample things to do, shows were really fun. They made everything very inclusive staff is wonderful. Would go solo again soon!
What a great comment - thanks a million for taking the time to type this! I did wonder about the smaller ships without the studio cabins - amazing to hear they’re so well set up too! I’m sure this comment will settle and help so many people - thank you!
Thanks for posting this interesting video! I’ve been contemplating doing a cruise solo. I’m not an overly social individual, but can carry conversations when talking to friendly people. It’s nice to get insight from those who have experienced cruising solo. It appears most people really enjoy themselves. Thanks again for posting! ✌🏻🙂✌🏻
Hey, thanks so much for watching! If you enjoyed this, hopefully you’ll enjoy my channel - I focus on the solo cruise world, to try and show as many ships and experiences as possible :)
Interesting stuff Fraser, very apparent you enjoyed that cruise. The visuals were great and the sail in to NY was spectacular! Still think the YT still for this is worthy of a Trainspotting still !! 😂😂 Waiting for the 30th for the "Worth your money" video to see if those walls are actually cushioned and how the corridor window works! 😮 Thanks.
I'll be traveling on NCL's Breakaway to Bermuda this August as a solo(ish) traveler. I'll be traveling with friends, but I'm the single one of the bunch, so it was nice to have the option to book a solo cabin. It'll be nice to take advantage of solo events when I'm not with friends, and I can't wait to check out the studio lounge! Thanks for making this video!
Ahh, you’re going to love it - I was actually docked beside Breakaway on my current cruise a few days ago, and she’s a beauty! Prepare for your friends to be jealous of your access to the Studio Lounge, ha! Thanks a lot for watching!!
Doing my first solo cruise in a studio cabin in October 2024 on the Bliss (my favorites ship)! So excited to be back on the Bliss ang going at my own pace in my own space!
As a retired teacher, over 55, repeat customer and live in Miami--a gateway city--I qualify for discounts. I have preferred to cruise solo. I've tried it on Carnival and NCL. I prefer the smaller ships. The NCL Pearl is about the largest class of ship that I prefer. I have always kept my eyes on the cheapest deal for a full-size cabin--generally an inside. I have been able to snag great cruises on MSC and Royal including an 11-night Panama Canal cruise in a full-size cabin. I enjoy having the extra room as opposed to one of those shrunken solo cabins because I travel with video and photography gear. I don't like those 200,000 ton ships loaded with tons of amenities for people under 30. For me, Breakaway, Prima, Icon, those classes of ships are just too big for me to navigate comfortably and I rarely hang out by the pool. I have no problem meeting people and sharing my dinner with strangers unless they want to talk to me. They don't get much conversation out of me. Watching for deals helps paying that solo supplement affordable.
Hunting for the best price can sometimes have good results - I wish you luck in continuing to find them! Thanks so much for watching my video, and for taking the time to leave a comment - great to get your view!
Thank you for this! I love your channel because of the solo insight - and the “walk off and explore” . Do you find you have to book as soon as the dates come out to have any chance of getting a solo cabin? And is there a way of knowing when dates are released? x
Hey Kathy, thanks so much - I’m glad you’re here and enjoying!! Really good question - yes with lots of cruise lines, but it’s actually totally fine on NCL. On the bigger ships, there are lots of cabins (Escape has THREE floors for solos!), so usually not a fight to secure one!
I found this video at a great time. I booked an Alaska cruise just this afternoon. I am going solo but was worried about feeling claustrophobic so booked a balcony. I’m hoping to talk to guest services, explain that I am solo and hope I can try some of the solo activities. I’m an introvert and it’s not easy to just starting a conversation with strangers.
Great - I’m glad to have popped up at the right time! You shouldn’t have anything to worry about - for the solo events, our host would block the lounge door open to allow those not booked in studio cabins to attend! Have a great trip - Alaska is just beautiful!
My cruise isn’t until end Feb. I’ll make sure to take some pics but im starting to think the Solo Ocean view is just the smaller ocean view with a smaller window plus access to the solo lounge.
Nice one! What struck me about this -- and about what NCL's done in this regard -- is the fact that that entire "part" of the ship is dedicated to solo cabins. Meaning that everyone staying in them *knows* the little window is against the hallway, because theirs is too. Did you find that this aspect of knowledge tended to make those staying in the area more quiet when leaving or returning or hanging out in the cabin? If I didn't explain it correctly....most questions people ask is "is xyz cabin noisy?" and it's mostly because people tend to not pay attention when leaving/returning/watching tv in the cabin. So...did you find that solo travelers in that area tended to be more aware of the noise, ergo being mindful themselves? Oh--I like what you mentioned about us not being made to feel out-of-place and "omg what is wrong with that person, they're all alone, oh they must be so sad and wanting to kill themselves", but are being made to feel that they are just as welcome as the couples and families. And as mentioned below, offerings are now being made for balcony and oceanview. Think I may just need to start doing some searching for 2025 🙂
Hey! Really good question - I loved the separate part of the ship for solo’s - I’d say people probably were quieter coming back, yeah. I’d SO recommend it - well worth giving a shot! My next vlog series is from this ship, so lots more to show you!
Ive just booked myself on a solo cruise with Norwegian and will have one of these rooms. Im a little worried it will be a little claustrophobic but im givin it a go.
Ahhh good for you trying it out! I honestly don’t think they’re that way designed at all - don’t worry! My top tip is to always make sure you’re organised - that way, you’ll be fine. Have the best trip!
Excellent video!!! I’ve got my eye on a solo NCL cruise early next year. You’ve sold me on the solo lounge, but not the inside studio cabin. I do like a bit of space. Did you meet anyone in a solo balcony cabin? That’s an option I might splash out on.
Thanks, Gary! I do think the solo insides are small, but they’re all you need and offer a decent cost saving. That said, totally get your point! I didn’t see any solo balconies sadly, but know they do exist!
Great information on this topic, and no doubt, a go-to for solo travellers. Did come across as you really enjoyed that cruise, too. The visuals, particularly the sail in to NY, were great! Now, two questions are those apparently cushioned walls really cushioned, and how does the window into the corridor work?? Or are you going to make me wait till the 30th and the " Is it worth it?" Video for that? 😂 And BTW I still think the YT still for this video is worthy of a still for Trainspotting! 😂😂
Hey, Fraser! I previously mentioned in my comments that I was going to be going on my first Norwegian cruise in the fall of 23. That changed when I found a too-good-to-pass-up cruise on Princess from Vancouver down to Sydney. But I'm going to be doing solo on Norwegian coming up next summer in the Mediterranean. I'm looking forward to it... And this video is getting me even more excited. 😁 My only concern is that that cruise will be the first in a series of 3 cruises in a row in Europe - 1 on Norwegian, and 2 on Princess. I would not be considered a minimalist traveler with these adventures. I usually have a full size suitcase, a wheeled carry on, an over the shoulder carry-on with my computer, and a medical device (large purse size). That's nothing in a Princess Inside Cabin.. But I'm just wondering if I'm going to be climbing over my luggage all week in a studio. (Psssst... how's it going being back in the real world?)
McKenna, hello! I feel like I haven’t seen your name pop up in a while, so great to see it this morning! The thing with these solo cabins is that they’re SMALL compared to a ‘normal’ cabin - much smaller! However, I always say that they work so well if you’re organised, and you operate with the ‘everything has a place’ principle. I also think the benefit of having the solo lounge etc make it worth the compromise on room size. These trips you’ve got book sound absolutely fantastic - I’m excited for you! Also, real world is going well, thanks! Counting down to my next night on the waves, though - more on that soon! Thanks again for being here!
This looks really good - the only thing is, I would feel claustrophobic not being able to see outside. It would be nice if they had the technology to show kind of a streaming video of the ocean or something outside of the room, showing from that window so you wouldn't feel so closed in. If it weren't for that drawback, I would be totally up for this.
Lots of cruise lines do actually, so your suggestion actually isn’t far fetched at all - great idea! You think you’d be claustrophobic, but it’s quite amazing how little time you spend in there with a good social schedule. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment!
Sounds fantastic! I have never considered NCL because their ships are huge. I like ships with under two hundred passengers because it is easier to get to meet people. But this video makes me consider going on NCL. How many solo travellers were there on this cruise.
Hi Rosemary, wow - less than 200 is amazing! On my cruise I’d guess there was about 100-150 solo travellers - there are quite a lot of solo cabins, then you’ll also have solo’s staying elsewhere, so I’d say around that number 😊 Really glad I could open your eyes to NCL’s solo concept! 👏🏼
Interesting question, and thanks so much for watching! You can have a regular cabin, but you should expect to pay a bit more for one of these. Additionally you wouldn’t have 24/7 access to the Studio Lounge if you’re not staying in the Studio area, but the door is usually propped open for anyone to attend the official meet ups!
Wonderful to see more cruise lines embracing solo travellers! On this cruise, what was the age range of solo folks/in the Studio Lounge? I initially thought 35-45, but the lighting makes me think that NCL is marketing to a slightly younger demographic? Thanks!
Hey! Really interesting observation - I would agree visually. The reality is that there’s a huge age range - I was among the youngest at 31, and there was a lady in her mid 80’s, so the full scale! I’d say most were 35-50, if that helps? For sure, younger solo’s do cruise on here though!
Obviously solo isn't our thing, but the Studio Lounge is such a good idea. If either of us were going to cruise solo I definitely think NCL would be first choice!
The first NCL single traveler cruise I was on; the Solo's meeting was held in the Solo traveler's lounge. Very easy to know who the solos were. Very easy to meet people. Since that cruise the Solo's meeting on future cruises has been held at a bar rather than the Solo lounge. Not as easy to know who was there for the Solo traveler's meeting and who was just at the bar.
That's unusual. I'm a big Solo traveler with NCL. Usually, the Solo Concierge is still there at the bar meetups, when the solo lounge is too small for the group or on a ship where they don't have solo cabins/lounge, just inside cabins. The Concierge should get the group together in the bar.🤗
Ahh, that is odd. On Escape, they did night 1 at the bar, then all others in the lounge - I much preferred that! Hopefully it hadn’t put you off cruising!
I've never been on a cruise before. Very curious to try it out. None of my friends want to cruise with me so I will have to do a solo cruise. This video gives me motivation to try out a cruise even if I do it solo :)
This is SUCH a great comment to see - I’m so glad you’ve found me, and so glad you’re feeling like you’d try a cruise. Keep me posted on what you decide to go for!
My first cruise with NCL was as a 67yr solo on the Prima. Jan 5 - 12, '24 out of Galveston, TX. Costa Maya, Belize City (sub for Harvest Caye), Roatan Honduras & Cozumel Mexico. BRING INSECT REPELLANT & Itch Lotion FOR ROATAN! The "no-se-um's" were true pests on my legs. Use outside of Deck 8 to navigate around ship quickly. Loved my cabin (13577). I used elevator down to 12th for access to Lounge, thus saving my knees from stairs. Donna Summer Show was SPECTACULAR! Price is Right, alot of fun. (Sat in front row). Food was Fab, too
Hey, thanks so much for watching, and thank you for the tips! Your point on using the Deck 8 promenade to get around quickly is so good - I did that on Escape too!
@FraserAtSea I was just now looking @ Escape for Mexican Riveria 2025 cruise. (I got the "Cruise Next" deal set up.) Didn't realize deck 8 same. Probably are on the Breakaway class. Reading some negative comments, but I really think it'd be better than their Epic ship. Now to just get a good deal ...
Loved this! Excellent editing Fraser loved the montage of your week so far. This has got me very excited for Aqua in the solo area. It looks perfect and as you say it’s about time cruise lines up the solo market offering it’s a big market. One question did you or anyone you spoke to find it claustrophobic? Was that a fake window behind you?
Hey, thanks very much! Yeah, I think you’re going to love Aqua! I didn’t find it claustrophobic, but it’s an easy cabin to stress with if it gets messy. Everything has a place - keep that logic, and you’ll be fine, ha! It is indeed - a window out into the corridor, but frosted over. I thought it was a really nice touch to make it FEEL like an outside cabin!
I agree about wishing the solo supplement was lower. I have been looking into solo traveling for awhile now and I find myself constantly turned off by the idea of paying for a person who isn't there. Trains? Well, the room fits 2 adults, so boom - that's the rate, even for just one. All-inclusive resorts? Double occupancy. Cruises? The supplement. It's really frustrating. I think they'd do better to charge prices based on cabins or rooms rather than to advertise them as "per person." When you advertise per person prices and then you're like, "Uh, but not for YOU, you weirdo single; you pay double," it's a real turn-off. Glad to hear that NCL is welcoming. I just think I'd feel MORE welcome if I wasn't being charged for stuff I'm not using.
I completely agree - this is such a good point. I think solo’s would be happier agreeing to limited rooms on ships where there’s a pp charge applied - the supplement annoys everyone I meet. With some cruise lines, it’s the full double - painful!
Cute lil room... I'd be spending most my time exploring or where I could view the ocean or land from a chair or rail... the cabin is mainly for resting....
@@tamiw1903 Hey! So they’re very different ships, and NCL is always more expensive than Costa. Keeping it on NCL, this room is about the price of 1 person in an inside, plus a third - hopefully that helps!
I've been on the NCL Encore in a solo cabin twice. You just have to check the cost of a cabin for two vs a solo cabin. Sometimes paying the 100% supplement is cheaper than the solo cabin cost...or very close to it. The solo inside cabins are small and have no chair with a back to it. The private lounge is nice to have, but again, at what cost. Compare... NCL Encore by the way is a lovely ship.
I traveled solo on NCL Escape last November. I opted for axroom with a balcony & got a great promotion. I didn't know about the studio lounge & was trying to find it with another single who was in a separate stateroom (like myself). It seems that solo travelers from other parts of the ship are not included in solo events. I didn't know they had a solo cruise coordinator, thanks for telling me. I am going on my second NCL cruise in 3 weeks on the Breakaway. I am also leaving from NYC going to Maine, Canada & back. Any suggestions for Canada? I am going on two cruise expeditions in Maine. I also wanted to share that I visited a solo single room that my friend was in. Even though it was nice, I felt it was a little too small for me and closed in for my comfort. That's just me.
Hi Margaret, thanks for watching! If you head to my Norwegian Cruise Line playlist, you'll find more from my time in New England and Canada :) They usually jam one of the Studio section doors open for non Studio solo's to join the events, but otherwise this will always be locked - this is a good point. If it's not open, I'm sure knocking will get you in - this has worked on my cruises, anyway! Thanks a lot for watching my channel, and have the BEST cruise!
@FraserAtSea Thanks, Fraser! I am going to find out who the Solo Coordinator is and contact them to get the handout they have for solo get together. I think they should attach that to every solo attendees cabin or stateroom so they would at least know that they can find the Solo crowd at events etc. I will check your Playlist. How do I find that? Thanks for replying and have a good day!
Hey Brenda, thanks for watching! Good question - I’d say it’s SO varied with NCL. We had solo’s in their early 30’s all the way up to mid 80’s, and all got on so well!
*** OUTRAGEOUS how none of the customer service agents of NCL on the phone know ANYTHING about the solo cabins!!!! They focus on double occupany only and say to call a travel agent. NCL and other companies do the old way like traveling on a train 100 years ago, focus on the date and destination. Unable to give differences in prices and destination, etc. MARKETING IS HORRIBLE WITH NCL AND HA as they are the two who are said to focus on solo travellers! HELP!!!!
Hi Barbara! You’d be absolutely fine - I’m on the younger side of the audience, if you’re referring to age. I found most of the solo’s on my cruise were in their 50s, but the whole group ranged from me all the way up to guests in their 80s. You’ll have a blast - I promise ;)
Barbara, I am 72 and just cruised the Breakaway in May, you will be fine as long as you don’t need a crew to have a good time. My trip wasn’t as memorable as Fraser’s, but I did have a pleasant experience.
@FraserAtSea awesome. Thanks. I've never cruised before. I don't know anyone even slightly interested... and they think I'm crazy with a death wish to want to go. I'm looking at solo options and smaller crowds. Fun but not debauchery.
What about if you are solo that needs a balcony due to feeling claustrophobic.? Other then there being no balcony rooms, it looks fantastic and very welcoming ♥️
Very new to this and got my first solo cruise booked with virgin. Still feel ripped off about the cost compared to two people sharing a room and really hope these costs come down.
Ah, I do know what you mean - the supplements are high, especially with Virgin at times. The good news for you is that, once you’re onboard, Virgin don’t charge much extra for stuff, so you should stop from having that feeling. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!
Hello! Good question - it’s totally varied in my experience. On my NCL cruises, I’ve seen solo travellers in their 20s, and also in their 90s - the whole spectrum! Thanks a lot for watching!
Everyone in studio lounge is not necessarily travelling solo, they have a solo room booked , a friend could also have their solo room and hence are travelling together
How are you consistently finding deals on all the different cruise lines that have less than 150% for the solo rate? I feel like 180%-200% is way more common ?
It take a LOT of searching, but you do find them! I find it’s key to be super flexible, but the European cruises are way easier to avoid most of the supplements, being totally honest!
Hey! You will, but only during the arranged meet up times. All other times, the lounge will remain locked for studio guests only. You could ask at Guest Services to have the access on your key, but I haven’t heard of this being successful by anyone so far. Don’t worry though - you’ll be able to join ti social things - the host will usually jam the door open. If they don’t, just knock! 😊
Fraser, I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for the detailed information. Loved your accent! Scottish? One thing. I found the background music to be very jarring. Otherwise, loved your video and am following now.
Hi Michelle, thanks so much for watching, and welcome onboard! It is indeed Scottish - thank you! Thanks for the feedback re the music - I’m still a ‘work in progress’ so really appreciate your feedback. Thank you!!
Hey, thanks for watching! It’s not possible to have 24/7 access if you book a room outside of the Studio area, but it’s possible to access the lounge for organised events etc. Someone usually props the door open for organised events, so you’d be fine - just can’t get your daily morning coffee, unless you sneak in the door when someone opens it…!
hey fraser! so would you not recommend taking the time on the first day on board to try and reserve shows? because the solo hostess should have that set up for us?
Hey! Great question! The solo hostess MIGHT set these up depending on demand - on my second cruise, it was fully sold out some nights, so I’d always recommend booking yourself then, if it does get set up, cancelling your reservation. Hopefully that makes sense? Thanks so much for watching, Elizabeth!
Ive never been on a cruise but want to go on a solo one. Im confused with the cost of cabins. I thought if one goes with the silo cabin they dont pay that single supplement. That they only pay it in a room that is double occupancy. So do I pay an extra single supplement in a one person room or what? If I di what is the point of a silo traveller choosing that small solo cabin. They might just as well get a bigger cabin
Hey, good question! It’s not quite as clear-cut as that unfortunately. The cruise industry operates on a ‘supply and demand’ basis - when rooms get more sold out, generally speaking, prices go up. There aren’t many solo cabins, so they can sometimes be more expensive than a dual cabin. A bit complex, I know! I always recommend pricing both for the cruise you’re planning!
Hi Fraser. I'm sailing on Norwegin Getaway 14 day transatlantic this year. I was assigned a balcony cabin in an area of the ship that seems odd for a solo traveler. Deck 12 with adjoining cabin doors. These are family cabins and deck 12 is kids. Plus its the very front of the ship. I can just imagine the effect the ocean has on that area of the ship. This is my first cruise so Im abit upset. Why would Norwegin do this to a solo traveler. I expected to be near other solo travelers and make use of the solo lounge. Now i will be listening to kids. for 14 days. Evidently I have no choice in the matter. This is alot of money spent but have no choice in my location on this ship or a balcony cabin suitable for a solo traveler.
Hey! Try not to worry - individual bookings are just automatically assigned, so they haven’t deliberately put you there. Maybe try calling them and see if they can move you? Cruise lines can be v good at that sometimes - worth a try!
@@FraserAtSea I did call Norwegian and asked them for another cabin location. They offered me Deck 14 the same cabin type but with no door to another cabin. It is not on a deck where the family and kids activities are. This is exactly what I asked for when I booked and paid for accordingly. The added charge now is $368 because I am changing decks. So I want to enjoy my cruise so I paid it. I will not use the travel agency I booked this cruise with again. Norwegian apologized the travel agent didn't seem to monitor that I was given a wrong cabin initially. Still I'm having to pay more now to correct that mistake. Really what solo traveller would want to be on a deck with families and kids with adjoining rooms. You would think those assigning the cabins would have felt it was a mistake.
You failed to mention specialty coffee from the machine Free where anyplace else on the ship $5. I love NCL and solo cabins. Have been on QM2 solo cabin two four foot porthole windows, however price percentage not as good a savings as NCL solo also no lounge.
Thanks so much for watching this video! If you enjoyed it, please consider supporting my channel by liking the video, and click ‘subscribe’ for so much more. Thanks so much, and welcome onboard! ❤🎉
Also, thanks a lot for watching!
Do you have a video or floor plan? I just booked a ocean view solo cabin.
That's good to hear! I would be much more open to ocean view or balcony.
This is SUCH a good way of putting it - embraced rather than tolerated. If NCL continue this approach, I’ll absolutely keep supporting them!
Hello! Great point - people tend to assume solo cabins are always for solo travellers, but this is a great point. Thanks for watching!
I just came back with my friends and we all had solo rooms on Prima. It’s perfect.
And in some cases this could work out cheaper right? The solo cabins seem to be priced quite high
I believe you can book a "Single Balcony" and it works this way. I recall seeing this on one of the booking pages.
Sailing solo on the Norwegian Encore in 2026.. Can't wait!
Ooh, what a beauty of a ship - I’m jealous!
Will be on my 3rd Encore cruise March 31.... love Encore
They seem to do it right! I love the different lighting, plus the fact that there is a dedicated host with planned events. Thanks for this one, Fraser!
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it useful - NCL are doing a lot of things very, very well at the moment from the perspective of solo travellers!
Mariia was amazing. I did my first solo over Thanksgiving. The one thing I tell everyone is I traveled solo but never felt alone. Loved my studio cabin too. Can’t wait for my second solo cruise on the Getaway.
Ahh, I totally agree! Great you have another booked - so glad you had a great time!!
Fantastic I am doing a solo cruise, which is also my first. Your review put me at ease. I didn't know they had a itinerary for solo passengers.
Oh, amazing! Yeah, I love solo cruising, but was also very nervous before my first. Chill, you’ll have a ball!
I also vlog my cruises - maybe I went to some of your ports - my videos might help further!
First solo Cruise on the Epic April 2024 cruising the Mediterranean.
After seeing this video makes me more confident and excited!
That’s brilliant - I’m so glad the experience went well for you! Thanks for watching!
Going on my first cruise and doing it solo because my hubby has to work. Doing 14 day TA on NCL Escape inside solo cabin. Your video is giving me some ease of mind until I see the toilet area. Will make the best of everything. Thanks for your video to calm my first time jitters!
Hey! Oh, please try not to worry - it’s a great experience! If you have any other questions, just leave another comment and I’ll try to help 😊
@@FraserAtSea Just wanted to make sure I heard you correctly about the power plugs. There's a European plug for a razor?
That's great that NCL have solo program. I plan on being solo cruiser in a year or two and don't want to be too lonely on a cruise. Thanks Norwegian 🙏🙏🙂☺️🫠
Indeed. It’s great, too! Make sure you’re subscribed here on RUclips to see so many more cruise lines too!
Yes! I loved Norweigan for my 1st solo cruise! It was so amazing ❤
Couldn’t agree more! ❤️ Thanks for watching!!

I'm a big Solo traveler with NCL. You're going to have a great time and love it!🤗🚢😎
Appreciate the video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching - appreciate it - had the best time onboard!
This should be linked on the NCL website. I got wayyyy more answers from this video than any of their content. This makes me feel wayyy more confident and excited about this.
Oh, what a massive compliment - thank you SO much for taking the time to offer this feedback. Thank you!!
Good review Fraser. I love the solo cabins on NCL & the solo lounge. All the cruise lines should do this.
Thanks so much, Sue!
did the Encore solo room. Love the room and it's so quiet inside. and yes NCL has expended their solo program, saving the solo cruiser hundreds over a regular cabin. doing a 'solo' room on an older ship this fall and hope to move up to a 'solo' balcony in the future.
Ahh, thanks for watching! I’m really excited to try more NCL in the future - I love their solo concept! 👏🏼
Taking my first solo cruise on The Epic with NCL in March and I'm looking forward to it. Thank you for this review of solo traveling.
Thanks so much for your time watching! Enjoy Epic - that’ll be a great cruise!!
I too am solo on epic in March 2025.
Solo travel is getting more common, I would like to try Norwegian after watching this video.
Yeah, I know so many people who travel solo. You really should give NCL a try - I found them to be excellent! Thanks a lot for watching my video!
Ah, thanks a lot for watching - I’m so happy you found it useful! Have the best time - come back and let me know how you enjoy it!
Last 2 cruises Solo on NCL. Five stars all around. Cabin had plenty of room. Lounge was great and met lots of nice people. Never felt closed on. Booked next 2 solo. DO IT!!
Thanks so much for watching this video! I totally agree - I’m SO impressed with NCLs approach to the solo market - incredibly refreshing!
I booked a solo Oceanview on the Norwegian Sun, they don't have solo cabins per se but provided cabins with almost no single supplement charges!
Ahh, this is so great to hear - I rarely see NCL regular cabins with low solo supplements, so really positive! Thanks for watching!
@@catsrus2890 yeah, I thought this too - meanwhile, there’s me off exploring land, ha!
@@FraserAtSea Exactly!😂 Love to get off the ship and explore!🛳️😎
Fraser, thanks for your comments and observations. You’ve sold me on NCL solo cruising!
Ahh, glad I could help. Thanks so much for watching!
In fact, I just now booked a Studio on NCL Bliss to Alaska for a birthday cruise due to your vlog. 🚢😉
@@atomicrancher3745 ooh, amazing! I’ve got a full NCL vlog series coming soon - watch this space!
Thanks so much
Wow Wow Wow!! what a veiw of New York Skyline how amazing seeing the Statue of Liberty from the ship. ❤❤
Hey! 👋🏼 😊 Good to see your name pop up - thanks for watching!
I’m so excited to edit the New York vlogs - they’re hopefully going to be great fun!

Thanks for this, it helped reassure me and give me some greater excitement as I sail on the Prima in a few weeks!
Oh, you’re so welcome. Thanks for watching, and have the best trip!
😮 Thanks.
Ha, thanks(!) I think, re the Trainspotting reference, ha! I think you’ll be surprised by the room - there’s so many interesting touches in there!
0:00-2:18 - A very well-crafted montage. 🙏
Thanks so much!
I loved my first solo cruise! I ended up getting a great deal on a regular cabin for two but I would go for one of these without a problem. Thank you!
Oh, amazing! They’re rare to find - I’m so glad you enjoyed your first solo cruise - hopefully the start of many!
What an amazing informative video. You’re an incredible host! Norwegian should hire you :-)
Oh, thanks so much - I’ll wait for them to see this comment and gimme a call, ha! 😉 🛳️
Thanks for this. I was sold by the solo lounge.
Thanks for watching! It’s such a great facility - you’ll love it!
Doing my first solo cruise in a studio cabin in October 2024 on the Bliss (my favorites ship)! So excited to be back on the Bliss ang going at my own pace in my own space!
Ahh, you’re going to have a blast - well chosen ship, too! I’ve got lots more NCL stuff coming soon that you may enjoy - stay tuned! ❤️
I have a solo cabin booked for the Caribbean February 2024 on the Epic and another for Alaska April 2025 on the Escape, and am so excited for both!
Ooh, I’m jealous of both of these - I had SUCH a great time!
Excellent video! Thank you!
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Thoroughly, enjoyed staying in one of the solo cabin on VIVA in August 2023.

Niiice! Remember to let me know if you enjoy :) Thanks for watching!!
Fantastic video, well done! I just booked a solo ocean view on the Breakaway. I would love to see a video or floor plan if you have one.
Thank you! I’ve actually never seen the solo ocean views on NCL, but would love to!
Thanks so much! I am a solo traveller, not all the time... your video helped me a lot
Thanks so much for watching!!
My only concern is that that cruise will be the first in a series of 3 cruises in a row in Europe - 1 on Norwegian, and 2 on Princess.
Great Video - thank you. Impressive. Can you have a normal cabin to yourself and still enjoy the benefits of the Studio Lounge and meetups?
Interesting question, and thanks so much for watching! You can have a regular cabin, but you should expect to pay a bit more for one of these.
Additionally you wouldn’t have 24/7 access to the Studio Lounge if you’re not staying in the Studio area, but the door is usually propped open for anyone to attend the official meet ups!
are you scottish? very pleasant and comforting to listen to.
also very good information and talked in a welcoming friendly manner.
I am indeed - thanks so much for taking the time to leave this comment. I do get quite mixed reviews on my accent, so this is really appreciated! ❤️
The day might come where you get rid of each other, at which point I look forward to your review of NCL 😂 Thanks for watching, guys! ❤️
Very interesting video, will Check a Solo Cabin next year…
Thanks for watching! I’d really recommend 😊
Lots of good info, thanks.
Thanks for watching!!
I stayed in one of those and had a great time
Yeah, I really do rate them. Thanks so much for watching!
Ps hopefully we’ll see it move in the next few years! 🤞🏼
Well one thing that works is your quizzical look! 😮 In the premier still, that's bordering on menacing! 😅
Ha, I always get a fright when people comment on a video before it goes live - I always think the system has broken and it’s gone live early, ha!
@FraserAtSea Oops, sorry, but your "Really" look is really good! Will comment on the vid when it's live! 😆
Planning on doing cruise on ncl epic in solo cabin next year.
Ahh, great choice! I docked beside that ship in Europe last summer, and she’s huge! I’ve heard really good thing about Epic - thanks for watching!!
Cute lil room... I'd be spending most my time exploring or where I could view the ocean or land from a chair or rail... the cabin is mainly for resting....
You and I both - as long as I have a bed and a shower, I’m generally happy! 😊
Comparatively how reasonably priced was the room cost versus the room with a "view" of the ocean from the shower?
@@tamiw1903 Hey! So they’re very different ships, and NCL is always more expensive than Costa. Keeping it on NCL, this room is about the price of 1 person in an inside, plus a third - hopefully that helps!
Great vid. Never been on a cruise, but that sounds decent.
Thanks a lot! Love that you enjoyed it even without cruising before - thanks for supporting my little channel!
Hi Steve, thanks for watching, and I totally agree that you need to check all of your options - so many assume solo will be the cheapest!
@@margaretk9351 great idea! This link should take you right there! Enjoy!!

Great video! What would you say is the age range of the solo traveler on NCL?
Hey Brenda, thanks for watching! Good question - I’d say it’s SO varied with NCL. We had solo’s in their early 30’s all the way up to mid 80’s, and all got on so well!
Thank you for the subtitles.
Ha, you’re welcome! 😊
HELP!!!!
Oh, this is a shame - I’ve had such great experiences with NCL. Don’t give up on them - they’re excellent for the solo market!
Agree. Their phone agents are the WORST. ALMOST made me choose another cruise line. First point of contact is so important!
My PCC is very knowledgeable and helpful.
Love this! My only question about it is If someone aged 55+ would be comfortable in the solos company? Well done review.
@alexishull7117 thanks! I'm planning my first cruise experience. We'll, researching. I've been watching videos about it for 2 years now.
What about if you are solo that needs a balcony due to feeling claustrophobic.? Other then there being no balcony rooms, it looks fantastic and very welcoming ♥️
Don’t worry - solo’s can book a regular balcony too - they’re just a bit more expensive. Thanks for watching!
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!!
@@FraserAtSea happy to. You did a great job. Good luck on your channel.
Did you have a Bidet? Ya GOTTA have a Bidet. (I bring my own)
67 yr old from New Zealand with a small mobility issue. What's the average age of the people travelling solo with Norwegian, do you think?
Yeah, really good point! Thanks for watching!
I wish there were more solo cabins available.I think NCLPride of America has only 2-3 solo cabins.
Oh, me too - I’d love so many more. Thanks for watching!!
Wow this is great.
Thanks so much for watching!!
I wish the digital line/ waitinglist would work smoothly if at all. Not all can stand in line for a lobger time.
Yeah, I do totally understand this - if you mean dinner, they’re usually good for letting you chill with a drink while you wait!
If I am cruising solo, but did not get a studio cabin, will I still be able to access the studio lounge?
Thank you!!
Hi, thanks for this video. Is it possible to book a balcony cabin as a solo and still have access to the solo lounge?
21 days from your cruise date opens up bookings in their app.
Great point, and it tastes great, too! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment, Daniel!
Thanks!
Oh, thanks so much for this - it’s SO appreciated! ❤️
Oh, thanks so much for this - it’s SO appreciated! ❤️
How safe is the Solo cabin area?
Oh, so safe! It’s a locked area, so only solo’s in there. Really quiet, and all CCTV covered, so no issues at all! 😊
