There's nobody remotely like Martin. He sings & he plays so well and he can put across a ballad telling ancient stories in a way that compels the listener to stick around for more.
My first time hearing Martin perform this- I only know the version by NicJones, and this has such a darker feel. It’s such an odd thing, when you get used to one version before hearing the other- quite a different experience, and neither is less than the other. I don’t prefer one over the other- I feel privileged to have both to enjoy.

Another great performance of one of my favourite ballads. Loads of other versions.
Including in French.
This is gorgeous as Martin's ballads always are. Thanks for posting. Yes, there are lots of variants. It's a Child Ballad-I forget which one.
No.4 Child ballad, No. 21 in the Roud index.

"Help, or I'll drown!"
"Better you than me."

Sounds like that guy Tim Hart.
