Why Wullf Yularen is So Important to Andor

  • Wullf Yularen just made his first live action appearance in Star Wars since 1977! But I think his inclusion in the seventh episode of the series was more than a simple cameo. I think showing Yularen again serves two thematic purposes for the show, and that's what I'll be talking about today.

Something quite subtle (unsaid) I liked about his scene in episode 7 is the fact that partagaz (such a great imperial name and character, my god) is sitting while Yularen speaks obviously its visual storytelling for the fact he outranks them but that in itself given how much we've seen of partagaz and what we know about him it basically means shiz just got real!!!

I think Yularen serves as a great antithesis to Tarkin. Despite his first appearance being Imperial in ANH, everyone always knew Yularen as a member of the Republic, making him a “good guy”. Then there’s Tarkin who’s first seen as THE BAD GUY along side Vader in ANH and then years later we see him earlier in life serving the Republic on the “good side”. Both serving the exact same political powers at the exact same time until their deaths. It all comes down to the way you’re first introduced to the character and damn good writing

After all the Republic disappointed Yularen just as it disappointed many others, who can really blame them for changing side so easily when one man who disguised himself as "the perfect messiah" conveniently presented himself to the public?

He is one of those kinds of people that, no matter the underlying motive of the operation, simply says "Oh okay. I am now doing this - and my career is headed in this direction." He is a scary form of competence for sure. I truly believe two of the most sinister (and yes competent) minds (non-Sith and somehow more frightening) died on the first Death Star. I think if Yularen and Tarkin had survived the Rebels may have never accomplished everything they did in Return Of The Jedi.

I think this is why Supervisor Dedra Meero has become one of my favorite characters. She’s sharp and intuitive but also unsure of herself and she understands the penalty for failure, particularly when she takes liberties in pursuit of her goals of exposing a larger organized rebellion. I also like how Major Partagaz conducts himself. He’s demanding of the rules but also recognizes initiative in his staff when they exercise it properly. I like that he compliments Meero, but also offers a warning to watch her back. It’s writing like this that is making the Empire intimidating again…and without even firing any shots. It adds tension and I’m appreciating every moment of it!

Some fun Trivia about ISB Colonel Wullf Yularen:
He is seen with an unnamed ISB Officer on the Death Star walking past a manacled Chewie and the Stormtrooper armor clad Han & Luke. The unnamed officer is sometimes called Officer Evax (who also got a Decipher Card), but they are not the same actor.
While we see Colonel Yularen in 1977, he is not named until the Decipher Game in 1995, which means Grand Admiral Thrawn is named a few years before him in 1993.
Colonel Yularen has appeared in at least two more card games after the original Decipher game.
He was given the rank of Colonel in the card game for two reasons - he has six square plaques in his rank insignia, corresponding to an Imperial Captain or Colonel, and was based of grandfather, Colonel Leonardo de Leon, Director of the NBI (the Philippine equivalent of the FBI), who took me to see Star Wars in 1977.
    Cheers to both men 🥂🥂

I lost my mind when I saw his name come up on screen. Freaking WULLF YULAREN! What an awesome surprise. Makes me wish I didn't watch it with closed captions on which identified him immediately and made me go "WAIT WHAT DID THAT SAY" because I really like the way they shot it, the build up to revealing his face. I am sad that Tom Kane couldn't be the one to play him but it was still a great appearance and a great monologue. I don't know if we will see him again before this season is done but this was more than enough. It felt so rewarding as an animation fan but also works just as well for anyone who isn't privy to Yularen's history. I do have to applaud that handling.
A story about his transition from the Republic to the Empire would be fantastic because there is a lot they could explore. I'm not writing off Yularen completely yet. We haven't seen him do anything yet that makes me think he's on the same level as Tarkin or even Thrawn, who became brutal in his later years with the Empire. To me, it seems like Yularen is like Kallus in the early seasons of Rebels: he truly believes in what the Empire claims it represents (Order, prosperity, peace) and believes that is what it provides but unlike Kallus, he hasn't been witness to any of the atrocities committed by the Empire because he's no longer in the field so he has no reason to doubt his beliefs like Kallus and so many Imperial defectors eventually do like Jan Dodanna. I wonder if Yularen had stayed with the Navy and not the ISB, would his path be any different? I like to believe that he was still that honourable man that served as Anakin's admiral, just his loyalties were misplaced.

Yularen was always a believer in order and anti-corruption. Before he was the Admiral we knew and loved and Colonel that we hoped we could still love, he was investigating the senate for corruption, only to have the senate defund his organization and make him lose his job. The ISB was simply the natural evolution of his old investigation days even if he wanted to be part of the navy to fulfil his family traditions.

For a real-life comparison, I think Marshal Philippe Pétain of France is instructive. He ended World War I as one of France's most celebrated generals, but after France's defeat in World War II, he agreed to become the head of the collaborationist Vichy France government. While the Nazis kept an eye on him, Vichy France followed his own philosophy, diagnosing the cause of France's humiliation as Britain, liberal democracy, Communists and Jews, and envisioned building a French society on "traditional values" and the repeal of all of the "cultural modernism" since the French Revolution. This wasn't him implementing policies given to him by the Nazis, but rather aspects of the conservative nationalism that had propelled him to fight in WWI causing him to turn against his country and its values in the next war. After the Nazis' defeat, Pétain was convicted of treason in a French court and stripped of his medals and rank, but spared execution on account of his age and his prior service. He even physically resembled old Yularen. It is quite possible that Yularen also held relatively conservative views during the Clone Wars, but because his objectives aligned with those fighting for democracy and justice, it was hard to see.

Personally, l think Yularen’s career and service to the Empire makes perfect sense, from his point of view.
The Jedi, who he had served with during the Clone Wars, turned out to be traitors. Intent on overthrowing the Republic. Of course he then changed career paths to internal affairs. Intent of rooting out traitors. Yes, the Republic rebranded itself to the Empire, but what’s that to Yularen? As far as he’s concerned, he’s still serving the Republic.

I am glad that you recognized this. Most SW fans cherry pick from canon depending on what they like most from it and choose to ignore other things (like Yularen in the DS meeting being a full high ranking imperial). The Jedi Order and the Republic being "the good guys", for example, because that part of the fandom loves the Clone Wars series, even though the clones and the Jedi also commited war crimes and attrocities during the war, because (you know) that's just the horrors of war.
Yularen has always being part of the SAME STATE, I would even dare to say that he is a lot more loyal than the Jedi and the renegade clones.

    • @tristankawatsuma8962
      @tristankawatsuma8962 2 года назад +1

Sure, those of us that say the Galactic Republic are the good guys do have a bit of bias. I’ll admit to that. Still, conduct in the field is something to take note of. Dooku (intentionally) filled out the ranks of the Separatists with either battle droids who would do whatever they were ordered to do and officers who either served the megacorporations or had a dark history of atrocities to begin with. Palpatine on the other hand had the Jedi lead as officers in the GAR and Republic Navy. The Jedi who while weren’t immune to the current dark state of the Galactic Republic, still at least tried to maintain their beliefs as best as they could.
The Sith intentionally had the Republic led by honorable beings and the Separatists led by jerks and monsters. Reason One, to make the Jedi and their ways look incompetent and make more militaristic leaders more popular as the Jedi were unable to end the Clone Wars quickly. Reason Two, making the war look as black and white as possible by making the combatants as such makes people hate future rebels more and praise the Empire more.
So yeah, the goodness of the Republic and evil of the Separatists was manufactured by the Sith. However, as we see it play out on the battlefield, it meant the Jedi were risking their lives saving troops and civilians while many Separatist commanders were brutal and robbing the people, though I doubt most were as cruel as Grievous and Tarkin.
When we see the Jedi do immoral and questionable things, most of the time like you stated, it’s the harshness and realities of war thrust on them, like how Palpatine used the brutality and real fear of the war to convince senators to hand more and more power to him throughout the conflict. On the Separatist side though, Dooku ensured his agents did immoral things a lot, even ordering them personally. And he also made sure few Separatist citizens and politicians knew of how the military operated. If they knew of the atrocities, Dooku would be in a tight spot. It’s likely most reasonable and honorable Separatist commanders were put in charge of the defense of worlds instead of the invasions of others. That way, they wouldn’t have issues with the cause if they saw what the frontlines were like.
Now of course many of the officers that served the Empire, even after the destruction of the first Death Star, were originally part of the Republic military. It’s probably likely that most war crimes of the Republic were committed by them, like how Tarkin committed mass arrests and massacres on a planet that was key to the Separatist Shadowfeed Network. Palpatine simply would have the Holofeed Networks only focus on the victories of these officers and then ignore everything else, while he would have the media focus on both the Jedi victories and their atrocities, painting the latter in a worst light than it actually was to drum up anti-Jedi support. Anyways, the officers were still ranked lower than the Jedi, so most of the time the Jedi were likely holding them back from being brutal and cruel. Many officers of the Republic like Tarkin and Yularen questioned Jedi tactics and if they were the right leaders for the war effort despite the popularity of the Jedi among the clone troopers.
The Clone Wars is the most grey conflict in Star Wars Canon. The Republic fought for its survival with expendable troops that it made in cloning laboratories and its militarization not only made life miserable for many citizens who were doing fine, but it lead to the rise of the Empire. However the Separatists, while having justifiable motivations such as the Republic ignoring them and never protecting them from criminals, gangsters, and the megacorporations, performed far more brutally than they had to be. At times they even became the conquerors the Empire later would be. So does this mean the Republic and the Separatists are just as bad? I would say until the Outer Rim Sieges, the answer would be no, but only by a small margin. The Republic was only heroes by a very small margin. That margin is thanks to the Jedi Order, a margin that grew smaller and smaller over the years as the Jedi became more corrupted by the harshness of combat. It was basically the point of the Clone Wars, to drag it from any honor it had left and make people cheer when the evils of imperialism became normal. The last goodness of the Galactic Republic was spent in the Clone Wars, chipped away by the growing evil of the Empire. And the Separatists are partially to blame as much as the people who willingly became Imperials. After all, only a crisis can make people switch from the status quo to the next phase.
Now granted to be fair, we haven’t seen much of the good side of the Separatists. We’ve only seen all the bad elements, megacorporations, and criminals Dooku brought into the ranks. But I always have to wonder what the Separatists were thinking when they let Dooku get away with that. They made themselves sound like the Rebel Alliance. They indeed wanted to escape a corrupt government. And yet the CIS ended up with so many corporations, Slave empires, criminal gangs, and small dictatorships, that we usually have to be reminded that many Separatists just wanted something new and better before Dooku used the CIS for evil.

The way I see it, Yularen is a sort of loyalist and yes man in a way. He seemed Honorable in the Clone Wars because the Republic was mostly showcased and seen as the force for good and also, the Empire is the obvious pure evil of the Galaxy, and he has worked for both. He seems to be a character who is good at finding the best way to ascend through the power structure of both governments in ways that suit the morals of it(assumed or otherwise). He is your typical loyal military man and confident not only in himself, but that the decisions of those in charge are the correct decision, no matter the immediate consequences

I was so focused on what was happening in his scene that I didn't notice the subtitles giving us his name. It wasn't until after the scene that it clicked for me. A little embarrassing, but I guess it's good that I'm so invested in the show that I'd miss that in the subtitles. Haha.

That guy being Yularen makes for a really interesting thing about Star Wars. With the closed captions turned off, there's nothing to indicate that he's Yularen. He's just some ISB Colonel. But that one little behind-the-scenes detail from the subtitles blows the door open to all the Clone Wars, Rebels, and novel backstory of the character. Does it change anything at all about the scene in Andor? Not one bit. If he was Colonel Smith, the scene would have been exactly the same. The most extreme example of this was probably Camie and Fixer showing up on BoBF. Knowing that they were from a deleted ANH scene changes literally nothing about the scene, but it's deep lore that services the fans. It's perfect fanservice of the highest order. It's the kind of fanservice that means literally nothing to the scene, and yet means a TON to the scene.

When someone asked me to describe what Andor is about to them, I said "It's a detailed study of the mechanics of Fascism, but with lasers"
if that doesn't hook you, the show isn't for you.
Showing how Fascism can corrupt "good" people without even changing their moral makeup is what makes Syril such an intriguing character going forward. That shot at the end of the 7th episode with him in one of seemingly thousands of cublices perfectly illustrates what a 'good' person that would be the hero in any other show is to a fascist machine like the empire: A cog. And they show where that leads with Yularen. The show is insanely concise in its visual storytelling.

The fact that the Empire is shown as competent in Andor is something I love about this show. I think the ineptitude of the Empire, as shown in other material, is a major weakness. Of course, this is a stylistic choice made by Lucas, since all the action is shown from the rebel perspective. Even the destruction of Alderaan and Darth Vader's appearances are just cartoonishly evil. Being that the Empire is a take on Nazi Germany, which, realistically was staffed by a bunch or dorks and weirdos, they were still brutally efficient and evil to their core. The Empire should likewise be portrayed as such.

The obvious question is if Yularen stayed on the DS after the meeting then why didn’t HE interrogate Princess Leia when they captured her? Surely he could have not only found the location of the Rebel base but learned she was the daughter of Anakin Skywalker as well. Besides how do we know for sure he was on site when the station blew up? Certainly a man of his importance would have more pressing duties elsewhere and could have simply left after the meeting.

The key to understanding how so many Republic officers became Imperial officers lies in the resolution of the Clone Wars. We, in the audience, know the Clone Wars was a ruse and that Palpatine was playing both sides, but to everyone in the Republic military, they saw the formation of the Empire as a necessary step to ending that long, bloody and catastrophic conflict. They still harbor prejudices against alien worlds because so many of the Separatist planets were alien. They accepted the stringent crackdowns on personal freedoms and erasure of democratic norm because, to them, it was the last resort lest they lose the war they had just spent three years fighting. From their POV, the "betrayal" of the Jedi and attempt on Palpatine's life was a sign that the Jedi were aligning with the Separatists and that would mean the Republic lost the edge in the Clone Wars and would very likely lose. So, by that measure, it's not at all surprising that so many career Republic officials saw the formation of the Empire as part of a continuum with their values, loyalties and responsibilities. Someone like Yularen didn't so much "turn to the Empire" as he simply saw the Empire as a progression of his duty as an officer.

@@lamarravery4094 I still don’t think that fits Yularen’s character. In the clone wars he’s an independent thinker who wasn’t afraid to question and pushback against his Jedi generals while also having an open mind in following through with some of their tactics he was initially skeptical about. Doesn’t seem like someone who is swayed by the common opinion the empire promotes.

I put Yularen with Dooku. Perhaps his long standing with the Republic, and seeing the Jedi take matters into their own hands... or usually NOT doing anything is what made him think that he would prefer the order of the Empire to the chaos of the democratic Republic. We saw Yularen disagree with the Jedi tactics quite often, and while he certainly respected many of the Jedi, that does not mean that he sided with them. I agree, much like Thrawn, I hate to see him support evil... even if he has his reasons, but showing ISB without Yukaren would have been a huge loss... or missed opportunity. 😀

Systems either change or die. People either change or die. Yularen realized the changing of the guard and changed with it. Look at all the members of the Senate cheering for the new Empire. The tides have turned and Yularen decided to go with the tide rather than against. It's not that surprising.

    • @jg14gerhard_bar
      @jg14gerhard_bar 2 года назад

Eh i don't really see the parallel besides both of them being very good villains. John's motivated defection to/acceptance of the Reich was due to his desire to care for his family and not prolong their suffering, seeing safety in power as he climbs the ranks, which corrupted him to the point of no return. This is in decent contrast to someone like Wullf, who has lived through a "weak" lazy senate/government and knows the state of the galaxy which ended up guiding him to believe there will only be peace through authoritarian rule.
To me this belief is seen through his leaving the military to be directly involved with COMPNOR(Commission for the Preservation of the New Order), having a career in intelligence- working against anything that would disrupt the new "peace and order" he believed the Empire would bring.
i probs have Governor Pryce from SW Rebels sharing more with John smith tbh

The thought crossed my mind for a second, and I was like "nah, that's not him" apparently it was lol. Idk that lecture didn't seem like Yularen to me, obviously he's loyal to the empire, but that scene made him seem fanatical like he was 100% a bad dude, you know, first order type of guy. I never got that impression from all his appearances in rebels, so I dont know if I like this

Not too get all deep on a Star Wars comment section but I believe in free will. Sure we have things that shape us but they do not DEFINE US. Yaurlen (still spell wrong lol) is the example of that. My man had Anakin on his side which at the time, he demonstrate goodness, being a great leader, Respect! Honor! Care!… Yaurlen, witness this first hand YET he doesn’t enough too apply them... So it has to be a matter of choice. Yaurlen simply does not care enough for others. That’s a reality of humanity that is very much too real in today’s world. Mind boggling right? We don't know anything about Yularen's background prior to the clone wars but my money is on him being a Palpatine loyalist through and through, and I bet his assignment being the one non Jedi and non clone officer really close to Anakin during the war was not a coincidence. He was Palpatine's spy even then, providing him with up to the minute monitoring of his chosen apprentice. Think about it even right up to the last arc of the clone wars, who is standing there when Ahsoka makes contact with him? Yularen. He calls it in to Palpatine, and Palpatine goes out and gets himself kidnapped in order to pull Anakin back to Coruscant.
