Wow! What a great memory. I was a freshman clarinet and do recall the amazing feeling of joining such a large well run band. Before the performance the Drum Major gathered us together to sing “If We Believe” :)
What memories this brings back! This was my senior year. Wow, I didn't even realize this contained "The Poway Pause". What a great moment in the show. I remember us doing that, but didn't know it would become a signature element with a name.
I remember all of this,... not because I went to Poway H.S. but because as a member of A Smaller school marching band (Calabasas, HS) we ALWAYS wished to be in one of the big bands, Poway, Arcadia, Magnolia, Mt. Carmel & on & on... Poway & Arcadia were head & shoulders above all of the others IMO You guys were EPIC!!
I was in the Emerald Brigade from 80-82. I would have been in until I graduated in 84. My dad was in the Navy and we moved to Florida in the summer of 82. I loved this half-time show it was so cool! I was in the color guard, and was a rifle in this performance.
As a former sousaphone player in the ol' Emerald brigade, I have to say that Malaguena was my absolute favorite piece. Sadly I did not join the band until the following year. Didn't stop my and many other late comers learning it and playing it when we had any chance to do so lol. Made 1st chair my junior and senior year. I really do look on those days with sincere fondness.
This is what I'm talking about! My freshman year. The Pac-man shape, the great solos, the "Poway Pause" - this show had it all. I barely remember the shows from my Soph, Junior and Senior years because this one was just so awesome and I'm so proud to have been a part of it.
this was my oldest sisters freshman year. I didnt join until 1989. I think we were very fortunate to have very dedicated and talented directors. I dont know if this was the case prior to me arriving but we goofed off just like anyone else.. but when we took the field, everyone just switched into "game face on" mode. just total focus on the show. then when it was done, we went back to being our usual silly selves.
Cheeseburger in Paradise, Pac-Man, Fat Bottomed Girls... a lot of arch jokes in the formations in the first three minutes alone. [Archie Bunker singing voice:] “Does were da days!”
Found this gem. Played trombone in this show my junior year. What a great memory this brings back - and that Poway pause! My favorite show by far.

This was the show from my senior year...brings back such great memories :-)
Thank you for this! My son is now in marching band and I was able to show him how great we were. What wonderful memories. I was in the band '79 - '80.
Whoops...'79 - '82. Probably shouldn't be drinking wine while commenting. :-)
I still remember when I turned around and saw the big push, I was blown away! It is scary that I still remember their show!
I think we first introduced the "Poway Pause" at the Chino tournament. The response was overwhelming, people went nuts! It was great :)
so amazing and proud u all
30 years later, I am amazed at the Poway High School Emerald Brigade!

Wow, so weird to find this! I was in the snare line. Blubbering like a baby for some reason...heh
