Wherein our hero Durfee shows you the 3 latest & fantastic Elric Of Melnibone Omnibus editions from Simon & Schuster's SAGA Press. #Elric #Books #Reading
Please do! I’d recommend just focus on the main 2 volumes (and maybe the new one releasing in December). The White Wolf volume relies WAY too much on having read the entirety of Moorcock’s fiction, and I say that as someone who just finished reading over 60 books by Moorcock for the entirety of his Eternal Champion cycle. It’d be like skipping from Iron Man 2 to Endgame without ANY other MCU film in between. It’s one of the best fantasy trilogy’s I’ve ever read, but it only works as a culmination of everything Moorcock’s ever written, and that’s a truly insane task. Lol. - a nutcase. :)
I want them real bad but their delivery where I live is like 2 weeks. I'll have finished the books by then on my ereader (same version even has the illustrations). I'd prefer to read the beautiful hardcovers but alas.
I bought the elric saga at a used book store they were like 50 cents when brand new they were thin yellow paperbacks and loved the books Anyone else love the smell of a used book store
'Omnibi'. Had to Google that one. Turns out it is in a dictionary or two online and it isn't a new sexual orientation. I received that third book as well and was stunned by its size. Seeing all the Elric in one place you see it is probably somewhat longer then The Hobbit/LOTR/Silmarillion combination.
This couldn’t have come at a better time. I just bought the first omnibus and can’t wait to dive in. I’ve actually never read anything by Moorcock. Heard the Black Company series is a good one as well.
I want those hardcover set so badly..but it will take a week or two before it arrives and by that time I'll have finished the books on my ereader.. kinda sucks if they'd be here tomorrow I'd buy them in an instant
I read the Elric books, must be at least 40 years ago now. Loved them back then! Now I have a hankering to read them again. Those omnibus volumes look delicious.
Great video as always. Have the first two, been meaning to get into Elric, have so many of the paperback novels, but never read any of them. These editions are the push I need.
I read these waaay back in the late 70s ( Elric, Corum, Erekose, Von Bek, etc) and never stopped! Elric of Melniboné is just a cool and tragic figure in fantasy. I have all of these but in the White Wolf editions. I do, however, have these same ones on Audible and they're a delight to listen to. By the way, I've been watching your channel for the last year or so and I love your analysis and passion for fantasy, pulp fiction and historical fiction. I've placed in my wish list the 2 books you wrote that are available on Audible, so I'm eventually going to give 'em a listen. Cheers!
Michael Moorcock is one of the greats. Gary Gygax of D & D creator loved Moorcock so much he put Elric in the 1st printing of the Deities & Demigods manual. Unfortunately he got sued for it. Moorcocks character Prince Corum who possessed the Hand of the god Kwyll ants the Eye of the god Rynn was the inspiration for the Eye and the Hand of Vecnna. Also Elric was the inspiration for the Witcher character Geralt of Rivera. So needless to say he’s been around awhile and has helped set the pace for the Sword & Sorcery genre. 👍👍👍👍👍💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Fantastic! (Pun intended!). I have the first volume and plan on getting the others. I find Moorcock's approach to the moral conflicts and spirituality to be interesting. It's brutal, but not nihilistic. It's cool to take a look at the narratives and the style and see how he really works the style to fit the kinds of events and characters he's created. ROCK ON, man!! What a great set of books!!!
I actually just picked up Vol 1 at B&N a couple of weeks ago because it was a featured “best seller “ even though I’d never heard of it. I’m hoping it’s comparable to Drizzt books.
Thanks for the review. I still have the old, old Daw yellow paperbacks (Michael Whelan art), and was thinking of picking these up. Elric (Moorcock) and Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (Lieber) are very underappreciated fantasy, from a time when authors were able to tell satisfying tales in a couple hundred pages instead of bloated 10 volumes of 1000 pages each. See the WoT behind you for reference.
I'm hoping this has done well enough to make Saga press want to do the same treatment for the rest of the Eternal Champions, I hear the Von Beck books are the best place to start reading, so I'm looking for them followed by John Daker before I read Elric - though I'm certainly buying his these now.
I had not realized these were Omnibus Editions, so I hadn't picked up volume 1... Now I'm going to do so tomorrow as I've just started reading an Ebook version of Sailor on the Seas of Fate, but I heard the Fortress of the Pearl is actually set between the first book and Sailor.
Absolutely nothing tops classic SWORD and SORCERY. Rogues in the House Podcast led me to all my favorite stories, especially Robert E. Howard. Elric is one of the four pillars, Conan, Elric, Kane, Fafhrd/Gray Mouser. I definitely need to get this set. Thanks for the heads up!
Very nice editions. I just looked through vol 3 at my local Barnes, and I don’t think it had any color illustrations within the book. I guess they decided to put them inside the dust jacket to compensate.
The Neil Gaiman part is actually a short story of his that mentions Michael Moorcock. There really isn't that much art, just 2 b&w ones at the beginning and the end, and a few color ones right in the middle.
Read Elric of Melnibonè last year. Great story telling! I will consider buying these omnibus editions. Might continue reading these books after God of War: Ragnarok 😂 I'm currently reading Kiss, Kiss by Roald Dahl
Hi , I love your books and channel.Thank you.I wanted to ask about these writers(I borrowed some of their books from a friend) Ian Irvıne , Russel Kirkpatrick and James Barclay.Thanks.
Hi! Question. What the new novel thats coming after this ones? Are they by the creator?? Why is it dreaming city not included? Is their gona b another book?
These editions are so good, though I am shocked and dismayed that a man such as yourself hasn't yet put archival plastic on to protect those dust covers.
The channel "the Library Ladder" breaks down how Moorcock's cosmos works very nicely (without spoilers), and is generally a fun and informative book channel.
Correct. Moorcock was an early player in the use of a Multiverse in his writing. The Eternal Champion is comprised of four protagonists among four separate series, elric being one of them. Corum being another.
Brian you need to stop! I'm a weak man who's a sucker for good books. Then you show me how these are packaged and now I have to add these to the list. Well at least Christmas is coming...
The last book has shot up to nearly $100 for me to buy in New Zealand from book depository. Damn I should have brought it as a pre-order when it was $50.
I'm hoping to finally dip a toe into the Elric waters next year. Been buying these hardcover collections and they're gorgeous.

Was just watching your videos on Elric! Love the hat!

The first one is definitely the best of the 3 ive read but its a fantastic series.
Thanks for the heads up! These will make great gifts.
Cant wait to to read Vol 3!! Series became an instant classic for me from these.
Moorcock listed Poul Anderson's Three Hearts and Three Lions, and the Broken Sword as being an influence for Elric.
I want those hardcover set so badly..but it will take a week or two before it arrives and by that time I'll have finished the books on my ereader.. kinda sucks if they'd be here tomorrow I'd buy them in an instant

The three omnibus editions are beautiful.
I have read Vol 1 so far and liked it.
Great review.
Great video as always.

I only have White Wolf’s Son left, then I’m ready for The Citadel of Forgotten Myths!
I’ve been waiting a long time to get an Elric set this nice. It’s fantastic.

There's a pre-raphaelite painter called John Collier too!
I just ordered these for myself as birthday present I cannot wait to read these

Vecna? As in that demon from Stranger Things?
So much for a potential deal with Moorcock and Netflix....
vecna is an anagram for the author Jack Vance@@iwasanangryyoungman

Just ordered all three hardback on amazon thanks Brian!

That's exactly why I'm reading these books for years is because of Drizzt
Drizzt was heavily influenced by the Elric stories, as were the Witcher & others.
Books look amazing. Getting all of em
Thanks for the review. I still have the old, old Daw yellow paperbacks (Michael Whelan art), and was thinking of picking these up. Bought them and can't wait to read them. Razorfist has gotten me into this and other pulp characters.
I really need those omnibus editions in my life.

Sure, much of it isn't exactly "woke" but that's the fun of it
Book one and two are on Amazon for under $20 each, book three is $29.69.
Very nice editions. I just looked through vol 3 at my local Barnes, and I don’t think it had any color illustrations within the book. I guess they decided to put them inside the dust jacket to compensate.

Neil Gaiman’s recollection of minor boys masturbation habits is disgusting. He sounds a pedophile.
This is the most underrated fantasy character imo. Love these stories
I just finished the second omnibus, Stormbringer
I hear stormbringer is the last part? So should i read vol 3 before the last story in vol 2?
Hi! Question. What the new novel thats coming after this ones? Are they by the creator?? Why is it dreaming city not included? Is their gona b another book?
I cant find the first book of elric in my Amazon. Do u guys have websites that can ship to Saudi Arabia?
Legends of the Raven - James Barclay, The fire of heaven -Russell Kirkpatrick , The wiew from the mirror-Ian Irvıne
i wander how Are the Tarzan Books looking Edgar Rise Buroughs Novels Are Looking omnibus style
Go Raiders
So would you say these are a Melnibonus?
These editions are so good, though I am shocked and dismayed that a man such as yourself hasn't yet put archival plastic on to protect those dust covers.
Don't the Elric books relate in some way to some of Moorcock's other stories? I remember investigating his work and finding it a bit bewildering.
Yeah Elric is just one of the Eternal Champions.
The channel "the Library Ladder" breaks down how Moorcock's cosmos works very nicely (without spoilers), and is generally a fun and informative book channel.
