it's the only movie I won't watch alone, it's different from scary movies, when you watch it..it feels like you might manifest something, there's few horror films that are made with actual quality and effort and they still aren't at this level, only The Shining comes close in terms of quality imo, this film basically made a list of everything horrifying and did it, even the medical procedure is scary, haha, I think it even took 4 people to play the little girl, it's really an achievement

The story is based on a case of exorcism involving a young boy that author William Peter Blatty heard about in 1949. Originally he wanted to do a case study of that event, but after speaking with some of the people involved, they wanted to protect the family. So, Blatty changed his directon and wrote a fictional story about the possession and exorcism of a child and he changed it from a young boy to a girl.
The story is actually about Father Karras. He's a guilt ridden priest who's doughting his faith, but then he's presented with something he can't explain. In the end he commits the ultimate act of love by sacrificing his life for someone he never met. Remember, he never met Reagan, only the demon.

Father Karras willingly jumped out the window, to protect Regan. If you rewatch the scene when the demon "takes" Karras, Karras (while possessed by the demon) tries to strangle Regan and we see Karras internally fighting the demon. Karras knew the demon would be too strong to not push him to strangle Regan, so Karras sacrificed himself to save her.

The demon is an actual demon from Mesopotamian religion and his name is Pazuzu. He was the king of the demons of wind. He often offered protection for you against other demons. This is why Marin stated "Evil against evil". Pazuzu is the demon that Father Marin exorcised earlier in his life - the one that lasted months and nearly killed him. In the beginning of the movie Pazuzu allowed his figurine to be found by Marin which drove Marin to look at the large statue and when the white dog and black dog were fighting - this was Pazuzu telling Marin they were about to do battle once again. This is why Father Marin says "There is something that I must do" when the person says "I wish you didn't have to leave".

Ellen Burstyn tells a great story about this. The following year, she was in Arizona filming "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore," and she and some of the other cast and crew decided to go see "The Exorcist" one night to unwind (!). A lady in the audience became overwhelmed and passed out, and several people gathered around her to try to help her -- including Ellen, at first, until it dawned on her that maybe this poor woman probably didn't want to come to and see a member of the "Exorcist" cast in the flesh right away! So she withdrew. (Might've been even worse if it had been Max Von Sydow, I suppose.)

@Miles Doyle wow!!! i took my time and read it all!! ''Marian typing btw''
before I was... well I think I was.. an atheist.. but many questions couldn't be answered by science alone... an example is how a kid who is just 3 years old, falls form a 8th floor building on his belly and gets up few seconds later without a single scratch? based on science this should been very simple.. calculating the weight, the speed.. and the distance? u guess.. he will be close to a human pie or pizza.. but no... he defy laws of physics bcuz probably those laws are just theories that we still try to prove.. but God who made this world, knows when is our time and when is not.. secondly I read about this amazing soldier who saved a lot of Americans in WWII.. in Japan's war Doss or so was his name.. he saved around 70 soldiers in one night.. but bcuz he gave an oath to not bear arms of any sort.. cuz he was a medic.. he even went to court for that matter, but I will make this story short.. he saved a lot of people that one night, after a failed attempt to assault Japan's beach on top of a hill.. and the next day too.. there is soldiers who confess saying ''by mistake he was running in front of us while shooting, our guns will click and crack and stop shooting.. something or someone wouldn't allow him to die'' you see he was a 7th day adventist.. who kept even the Sabbath Holy.. he always kept his bible and praying.. God wouldn't allow him to die!! and he dies at almost 90 years or so.. if I am not mistaken..
so after seeing all of those stories.. and I struggle with my life and my dark thoughts..at some point in my life I wanted to kill myself.. but a very low silent voice.. but with a strong vibe said ''come to me, is time to surrender'' and I believe it from the deepest parts of my very soul.. it was Jesus... i cried out loud and beg him to show me what to do.. and he did.. in fact this very RUclips that we started me and Joy is bcuz of that.. bcuz we almost fall apart.. and divorced.. but now we are working on this together and God blessed us beyond measure.. i will always honor his name.. i will believe in his son's sacrifice and I know now.. that everything in this world is no such thing as ''random'' everything has a purpose.. and at the end those who denied Jesus before men, he will deny them before the Father Matthew 10:33

The director of this movie - William Friedkin - is a very talented filmmaker. He wanted to make the scariest movie ever, so he combined three things: 1. A truthful, natural style, almost like he was making a documentary; 2. The best technology available at the time - sound, film editing, lighting, set design, makeup, etc.; and 3. a knowledge of psychology that he could use to terrify both his actors and his audience. This film is a masterclass in psychological manipulation. Every possible method was used to keep the viewer nervous, but the most intelligent decision was to show the end of the story from the young priest's perspective, because he can't decide if what he's seeing is real.

Powerfully disturbing and scary as hell - the film still holds up. First and foremost William Friedkin's steadfast direction truly grips you from the get go building slow tension burns and fantastic acting all around (Linda Blair so s/gotten the Oscar for this). Compelling and based in reality is what makes it truly terrifying. Kudos to the iconic make-up artist Dick Smith's amazing make-up effects (sadly long before his category could even get an Oscar nomination!) Great reactions and nice that you caught Lee J. Cobb from 12 ANGRY MEN as the police detective (sadly this was his final film). I was lucky enough to meet Friedkin a few yrs. back and he was very nice and thoughtful. You s/also seek his other classic THE FRENCH CONNECTION starring Gene Hackman. A must.

    • @Zarkarian64
      @Zarkarian64 2 года назад +1

📽The great thing about Friedkin's style/ ability was his 'steadfast' mindset on realism. The major fault of nearly every horror film, dare I say, every film of today. I still hold/believe that the 70's was truly the golden-age of film. I mean, pound for pound, ...directors, writers, actors, score, film-editing and the birth of so many of today's categories due to the incredible/monumental innovations in the "arts & sciences". And your right, his gritty realism of "The French Connection" '71, was the same feel as "The Exorcist", disguised as a horror film.
📽How/Why did H'Wood ever forget that treating any genre, within the context of true-reality is what makes or breaks a film. That's why The Excorcist worked ...it felt real. Respect to the premise, story, characters, etc... Forget that it's horror, imagine what you do as being no different than The French Connection, an actual true subject. Hackman killed it and by the way, so did Jane Fonda that same year for "Klute". To this day, for me, the best-true honorings for best Actor/Actress ever. If you haven't seen Klute, Donald Sutherland being the movies namesake, put it on your immediate list.
📽Not a criticism, just a correction, ...Tatum O'neal won for best Supporting-Actress for '73 over Linda Blair. For years my brother and I thought it was a travesty how she beat out Blair. We thought it was because she starred with her father (Ryan) ...but then we saw "Paper Moon", by Peter Bogdanovich, another great of the time. As soon as the movies finished, my brother and I looked at one another and said ..."Ohhh, I get it now ...there was never a contest!"😲😏
📽That l'il girl stole that whole film from what was supposed to be her father's. If I understand correctly, he was even jealous of his own daughters fame overshadowing him. Fun fact: the medical center scenes were filmed in Bellevue New York City and the staff were actual medical staff members. The guy who inserts the needle into her neck in the movie, in real life went on to become a serial killer who was eventually arrested and convicted for his crimes.
Also, the real boy who this was based on is still alive and well, and living a possession free life in Maryland. The exorcism took months to successfully complete and took place in two different states. They had to start all over with a new priest doing the exorcism as the first priest was severely injured when the boy took a piece of metal from one of his beds and injured the priest. He required many stitches to close up a wound he received from the boy.

The demon was voiced by an actress from my hometown, Mercedes McCambridge. She had recently gotten sober but for this role she drank whiskey, gargled with raw eggs, and did much more to provide the incredible vocals, which to me are the scariest thing in the film. She was also very religious, so it couldn't have been easy for her to play the role. When Regan kisses the priest at the end, I think some part of her knows that a priest saved her and she is thanking him.

There's a movie about his first encounter with this demon, I believe it's called "The Exorcist Origins". There's of course "The Exorcist 3", it picks up, I think 5 years later and there's someone masquerading as a serial killer who's been dead for the same amount of years. George C. Scott plays the part of the detective from the first movie and he finds himself in some deep s**t, when he finds out what really happened to his friend Damien Karras.

He was actually a good luck demon in some cases.
His scary visage was used to ward off the evil child snatching goddess Lamashtu during and after childbirth.
He also snapped the wings of the Lilû to stop them bringing an evil wind.
Having said that, he also brought the southwest winds to make famine...

As far as I know, William Peter Blatty (who wrote the script, based on his own novel) was inspired by a case that happened in the 1960s of a boy who supposed to be possessed by a demon. He also wrote and directed the incredible and very scary ''The Exorcist III'' (just skip Part 2, because it is just horrible). Btw, ''The Exorcism of Emily Rose'' (2005) is based on a true exorcism case of Anneliese Miche in Germany, in the 1970s, it was a year later made in a more realistic way as ''Requiem'' (2006), which imo is an excellent movie. Greetings from The Netherlands.

The movie is actually based on a true story. Growing up we always heard the ‘real’ child was male (true) and lived in Europe (not true).
About a month or 2 ago it was revealed it was based on a male teen here in the US; he went on to have an extremely successful career as a NASA engineer, working on the Space Shuttles & more, but lived his life in fear of his identity being revealed😞 He passed not so long ago & his identity was then confirmed.
The movie is so unsettling in part bc during that slow buildup, Mom does all of the ‘rational’ things one would do. Amazing how it all- story, makeup, effects- holds up all these years later!
    Great reaction; SUBSCRIBED!💜
