I think this is very helpful. Ive actually made quite alot of friends from Twitter and its never bad to initiate conversations with people. Internet friendships is def hard esp not seeing each other, but just like your friendship with Ash, i think it can work if you truly want it to work. I love videos like this.

this is extremely relevant to my interests and current life arrangements! so many fab points kim ty. don't even be all 'no structure', you did a sick job of just layin' it all out. :) :) :) 10/10 about the bit where you talked about being worth more etc, this is most relevant of all i think. tl;dr you have provided me with wisdom today and i'm gonna go think about it at great length~

omg this video is so accurate :) My best friend and I are also in this kind of long distance situation, and I everything you said in this video hits the spot! I totally agree with the need to contact everyday to keep the relationship, as sometimes we do get so invested in our personal lives. Watching your video gave me more confidence in keeping our friendship, thank you so much :)

I agree that being friends with someone long-distance is usually really difficult for most people, but to be honest I don't find that it is. I don't see my friends who live close by enough to notice the difference between my "internet" friends and my "real-life" friends (although obvs my internet friends and I are friends in real life).
About the people not wanting to hang out, I've often turned people down just because it scares me that those people won't like me when they meet me in real life. I've genuinely been terrified that some people would think I was too overweight to be their friend (but when we do meet, it's fine). Even with friends who I meet in person briefly, we become friends online and then don't see each other for a year, I get afraid that they'll think I'm too much of a mess physically to be able to be friends with them. It's something to think about anyway about the whole not wanting to meet up thing.
Also your set-up and background and everything here is really good.

+Jessica Spencer Yeah, I agree that my 'internet' friends are 100% my friends in real life (something my local friends and family don't seem to understand) but as far as meeting up, I've for sure had moments where you want to look your best and you dont want it to be awkward or uncomfortable. I think the way I got over it was I realized we are all on the internet for a reason....we are all socially awkward and if anyone is gonna 'get it' its gonna be another internet person. (also you are beautiful omg i dont think anyone would ever think you're a mess

definitely agree with you on letting a friendship form naturally. my best friend is someone i met at the last tatinof date in november. all we did was hang out during vip and get food after the show, which turned into DMs on twitter to make sure we both got home safe (bc we're both 'mom friends') and i don't think we've gone more than 3 consecutive days since then without talking.. weird that someone can become such a big part of your life so quickly but hey that's the internet for you :P
also, protip: if you really want to impress someone and show them you want to be their friend, call them TRASH in a youtube comment...

+alwaystimeforquirky I feel like you're calling me out and im like 100% okay with this. arent' we all living trash cans at this point tbh? And yeah that's basically what's happened with me and i'm not gonna get too sappy but im emo that the internet has helped me form some of my best friendships

I've definitely met a lot of people through tumblr, and then would move on to Skype (because even tumblr's new messaging system has issues, let's be honest) and then maybe from there move on to facebook (which is weird because it's what I use the least, and yet it seems the most personal). I'm also loving the red in your hair btw :D

+meghawhopp yeah I rely on Tumblr for a lot of meeting and interacting, but I think it's because I'm involved in a lot of fandom life so it gives us extra stuff we share interests in. Not everyone has succumbed to the Tumblr devil.

I really liked this! I also think this is the first response video anyone's ever done to one of my videos! :D
I was afraid I was going to come across a bit whiney when I made that video but this is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for, just honest conversation and advice on how to better reach out to people.
    Good fuckin job Kim!!! :D

+TheIrishWill YAY! I'm glad you liked it! I love doing video responses, it lends well to the type of content I enjoy making about culture and stuff :) (also this was one of the easiest videos I've ever filmed, it was so natural cause I was just like 'imma talk to Will and have a conversation')

I've been thinking about this for a while. All my irl friends are through someone else. The one actual irl friend I've made in the last 5-10 years, we are both bad at being a friend; we hang out for 5 hours about every three months even though we literally live blocks away from each other.
I've met many people on tumblr and even a few I would call my friend and now I feel really bad about the two times I've had to pass on meeting up with someone :(
But yes, good video, useful advice. I'm off to utilize twitter :)

    • @expressivekim
      @expressivekim  8 лет назад

+only1tacynne Yeah, don't feel guilty about that! We all have our reasons for preferring online communication, and if that's /enough/ for you in a friendship then thats 100% okay. You can have a completely fulfilling and legitimate friendship with someone online.
And if you're /looking/ for a reason to meet internet people irl I would suggest trying to go to a convention if you can. They are so fun and 100% worth it if you're looking to meet people with the same interests irl.

I literally was like "not to be creepy, but we're best friends now" hahaha! I love this video though! Great advice. Especially the part about not getting too worked up if someone doesn't wanna be friends with you. If they only wanna talk to you in a specific context but not actually care who you are outside of that context, that's a pretty big red flag for the relationship as a whole. Like you said, it's fine to have those types of acquaintances, but that's not a friendship you'd want to try to force. I like the twitter route to friendship as well. I have friends I literally only met because I thought they were funny on twitter and started responding to them. I find most people gladly accept that sort of interaction from people with similar interests/sense of humour! Also this made me miss hanging out with you a lot so how dare you include that picture. Love you!!
