A Guide to my Busking Gear

  • When I first started busking almost 20 years ago, all you needed was an acoustic guitar, your voice, and a case for people to put money in. Things have come on a bit since then... In this week's video I'll talk you through all the equipment I take with me to make music in the streets.
    Please note, this is not a sponsored video. All the gear I'm talking about I've bought myself with my own money over the years I've been busking. No one has asked me to promote anything or supplied any of the products. This is all stuff I genuinely use.

    In most of the cities in Germany you can't use any kind of amplification for busking. Only if you get specific certificates with the city and you can only play for special times and places. I have two big cities nearby, Cologne and Düsseldorf, and they both have very strict and sometimes complicated rules where and when you can or can't play and for how long and how often and how far you have to move etc. To be honest it's quite the mess ^^ But here in my smaller city, I only have to move to the next spot every 20 minutes of playing, but within those mini sets I can do pretty much whatever I want. So I will absolutely start hitting the streets again.

    • @davidburnsmusic
      @davidburnsmusic  Год назад

      That sounds so much more complicated than in Scotland!

      @@davidburnsmusic In Cologne they banned amplification completely and in Düsseldorf you can't have amplification and even can't have any sort of percussion. So it depends totally on the city. I used to live in Bonn and there you had to do an audition at the city hall to get permission to purchase a license for the year.

    Thanks fur sharing. Where dae ye get the clips and dae ye need a licence tae sell CDs? I am 67 and I have played all over the place and just recently started busking again. I bought a very lightweight smart guitar by Enya with built in fx etc its been a life saver on my back. I also bougth a wee spark go amp that attaches tae ma belt and is pretty loud. I just need a mic stand that folds up and another wee amp for vocals.

      The music stand clips are from Amazon. You do need a street trader's licence if you're going to sell CDs, Glasgow Council have just announced new guidelines for busking.

    Do you have a link to your mic stand? How sturdy is it? Many thanks for the video!

    • @davidburnsmusic
      @davidburnsmusic  2 месяца назад +1

      I've found it's pretty sturdy so long as it's not too windy. It'll usually stand up to wind gusts up to about 20mph, anything above and it'll fall over. Make sure the gooseneck arm holding the mic is directly over one of the legs of the base for stability.

      I grew up in Ayr, just up the road from the cottage Robert Burns did in Alloway. I've been known to do 'The Banks O' Doon' around Burns night, and the tune to 'I Belong To Glasgow' is part of a medley of tunes we use for waltzes in the ceilidh band I play with
