Back on the Trail: Alone on the Bruce Peninsula

  • Many of you know that last week I set out on a solo overnight backpacking trip on the Bruce Peninsula and after a few hours into the hike decided that it was unsafe to continue. Disappointed that I didn't get to check out this unique landscape on Georgian Bay and within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve I had to get back on the trail as soon as possible.
    This week I packed everything up again and decided that I would attempt to get to the trailhead earlier (to provide more time to hike in) and also bring along a bit more camera equipment.
    I figured, last time I failed but this time I'd do my best to not only reach my destination and spend the night alone in this wilderness area I would also attempt to create the best video I could out of the journey.
    "Bruce Peninsula - the last time we met you sent me home. This time I'm coming back prepared, to prove to myself what I'm capable of."
    While out there I did a lot of hiking, some bushcraft camping and landscape photography.
    I hope you enjoy the video, if you do, please give it the thumbs up, comment and share. :) Thanks, Jason.
    Camping Gear I used in this video (not affiliate links, just great gear I'm happy to recommend):

    I cook bannock on a wet branch ..or two. Fish on a flat rock , beans sometimes.
    Oh how I wish I were there . Loved the bush in Northern Manitoba, always lots of fish.
    Thanks for a wonderful film, soothes my soul. Love the silence, no people, I’m not talkative so that is a beautiful spot.

    Listening to you mentally working the gears is pretty interesting because you are such a driven person. Nothing has changed.
    Thinking by the end of this video it’s going to be Trail 1 Jason 1, if it’s not I think it would just motivate you more.
    Haha look out Trail.

      You know, what's funny is that it almost became Trail 2 Jason 1 when hiking back out. So much snow melted overnight that a part of the trail was flooded and washed out. I had no choice but to step off the trail for about 50 meters and then for a moment I had a hard time relocating the trail to continue the hike on the path.
      I thought to myself, "are you f@#$ING kidding me..." Of course the evidence shows that I'm still alive and made it out ok.

    Great trip Jason. Thanks for sharing. Did a 3 day/3 night this last weekend and slept under tarp. Full moon was so bright I could nearly read by it! You do, unlike myself, have access to beautiful back country.....terrific to watch....thanks again. BTW: think it would be tough for me to sleep on that incline! LOL

    • @TrailguidePictures
      @TrailguidePictures  6 лет назад

      Tarp only! Good for you, but you've got the warm weather don't you? You know, the incline was probably worse than I led on in the video but I think I was so exhausted from the hike I just didn't care.

      Jason Eke , LOL, yea, been tired enough to sleep on nails! And yes, had great weather, high 70+- low mid 40's! No mosquitos yet, some gnats and plenty of ticks! Thinks for taking the time to talk.

    Don't think of your first attempt as a failure...Instead, think of it as a learning experience at setting goals. Several things added up to eventually cause you to fall short of your intended goal...Ive done that many times myself...The point is, learn from past experiences. What most people call failure is really a lesson in disguise to be filed away in your memory if a similar situation arises at some future time. Cutting your outing short of the intended goal was the right thing to do. Who knows what might have happened further down that path. You didn't fail, you simply took stock of your situation and decided to retreat and tackle it another day. You did the right thing, so don't feel bad about it. Tomorrow is another day.

      Thanks Jim.
      I agree 100% and with all of the "failures" I've experienced in life I should be a bit more tolerant of when they happen these days. I am comfortable with my decision and the lessons I learned that day.
      Its interesting because needing to turn around raised a lot of questions for me. Would I have turned around if I had gotten to the trail earlier? Was I growing complacent with my skills? Would I have turned around if I was travelling with someone? Lots of questions, and I think that's the best part of not succeeding. Its given me the drive to evaluate what I'm doing and how I'm doing it, helping me raise the bar a little.

    I'm glad you "conquered" the backpacking trip on the Bruce Peninsula after having to turn around last time (rightly so).
    I figured the waves crashing on the shore would help you sleep more than they did. Too bad they didn't.
    I enjoyed the video, and thanks for sharing.

    • @TrailguidePictures
      @TrailguidePictures  6 лет назад +1

      Actually the waves weren't too bad, the thing is, I'm always a bit apprehensive when out in a new area and sleep lightly. The sound of the waves was just another sound that my ears would hear once in a while and my brain would wake me up to figure out what that noise was.
      Thanks for watching :)

    Congratulations on making the full trip the second try! And you should feel good about giving up the first time. It was the right decision. Conditions were not good and continuing might have put you in danger and then we might be without your videos which would be bad!!
