good God Serral is too good. he's the heart, the fury, the fist, the soul, or the whatever important part of the Swarm. I think we could even say that he IS the Swarm.

As someone who is new to starcraft watching serral play is overwhelmingly exciting and even tho I don't know the game well I could tell how much maru was being completely overwhelmed most of the games by the sheer amount of expansions and Zerglings his opponent had.
I watched this series on the original broadcast. Maru kept massaging his wrist, even during a game's early minutes. He's definitely not at 100% right now, and I think his lack of focus prob from the wrist pain showed pretty clearly here. Their epic clashes are usually a lot closer than this one was.

The nerves to stick to Ling Bane Waves cause the math adds up in the end. Super clean and methodical game by Serral.
But it does seem that games where he is low(er) eco seem to be the best shot for his opponents. Especially that Showtime game was beautiful.
Serral was 5 bases ahead but only 6k minerals behind in losses.

What would make Protoss more playable? What if they got some sort of spell like the queen but instead of spawn larva it gave existing mineral patches more total minerals (regrowing used or close to depleted patches bringing them back slowly up to the original amount). It would favor late game builds, so probably slow down the game.
They could have a stationary building that is a mix between a bunker and a medevac. It could protect a few units lowering there damage because they are being healed but they would regain health as fast as Zerg, so slowly (maybe 2x Zerg normal heal speed). This would work for mechanical and flying too.
They could have a merge like archons for zealots that gives them more health, reflective damage shields (meaning if they are hit by projectiles it also damages the enemies a small amount), but instead of attacking they have a passive area of effect slowing and a small damage over time effect (like a poison, maybe stackable) just being close to enemies.
For the sentry revamp the force field, make it damage somehow, maybe make it similar to the auto turret or the removed infested Terran, possibly let your own units enter the field making them like bunkers. Or make it be able to capture enemy units like stasis ward.
I feel like Protoss should have a damage, shield energy, and or spell energy increase if they are within the power effect of pylons (maybe choose one and make it a temporary triggered ability/spell). Giving their energy based weapons and shields an additional +1 +0 +1 (up to total +4) (regular armor would be uninfected).
Possibly give gateways a reactor like attachment or upgrade, that allows for you to create certain units like a normal gateways (only spawn at the gateway) + continue to allow the regular amount of warp ins.
I'm liking the mass ling/bane style as a counter to Ghost play; feel like for a while, people thought they could just outplay the Ghosts, or out muscle them, but now we're seeing people actually play around them with units that have no energy, and make terrible snipe targets
I'd have loved to watch the whole finals from Serral's fp pov.
Wooow - Maru quickly putting a few scvs inside the middle of a Liberator siege area to keep them safe while also fully defending the forward base in the final game...

@@alexandrel4569 well these champions are mostly serral, reynor and rogue, I don't think the race has too much to do with their skills. Those infestor EMP over ghosts are extremely difficult to do. I don't think seeing any other zerg be able to do it so easily like Serral.
@@alexandrel4569 Except, it isn't. Nobody is pulling wins like that except Serral and Reynor. You can't assert that an entire race is broken just because a couple players are gods among men. If it was truly broken you'd see high rates with it throughout the entirety if the ladder, but you don't, because it's not the race that's inherently strong, it's those specific players who are head and shoulders above the rest
@@alexandrel4569 Looking at the top 3 is misleading. If you expand that to the top 20 players in 2022: Zerg accounts for 25%, Protoss 35% and Terran 40%. Oh and Reynor also plays Protoss, so the percentages might be even less favorable for Zerg though who knows how to do that math. 😜

Hey, let's create a tournament to see who's the best! Let's also give one of them a huge advantage in the finals!
The tournament invalidated itself with this move.
Do you know how these tournaments work? Maru lost a full match to someone before reaching the finals, Serral didn't. Most games that use a double elimination style tournament actually require the player coming from the loser's bracket into the finals to win two full sets in order to win the finals, which in this case would have been two full best of fives, while the player from the winner's bracket would only have to win one of those two.
A double elimination bracket allows for you to not be on your absolute a-game for every single match, while not requiring a group stage. Depending on the total amount of participants, this can be hugely beneficial, but as a result, one of the two people in the finals gets some form of advantage because if they don't, they actually have a disadvantage, since they would then be the only player in the tournament to be eliminated after a single loss, instead of two
This game will be totally different if zergs can feel fear instead of being controlled by a hive mind. I can see a zerg worker's union being formed and requesting safer work conditions along with anti sacrificial job requirements.

Because of the way the earlier brackets went, serral starts up a point or something idk.
Maru lost earlier in the tournament most likely. I believe it is an A/B tournament format so if you lose you enter the B bracket. The winner of the B bracket faces the A bracket with a disadvantage (since the A bracket hasn't lost in the tournament yet). Often what happens is that the B bracket winner will have faced their competitor then defeated the B bracket semifinalist to win a rematch.
Winter said it at the beginning, Serral came from the upper bracket and Maru from the lower, so did drop a series on the way to the finals, while Serral did not. So the +1 match for Serral is basically a reward.
So it's settled: Serral is 🐐!
I like that winter just came out and said it. "The counterplay to ghosts is spam huge numbers of T1 trash units so there's nothing to snipe". Ghosts are so game warping they prevent the zerg from making anything but lings, banes, and 3-4 vipers for the mandatory blinding clouds so they don't get deleted by siege tanks.
Skill issue
So in other words Zerg is in full control of when to tech or not to tech. Also Zerg has by far the most flexible unit composition. Sounds OP to me.
@@kaiser2261 my opinion is that zerg has a lot of play styles, but each unit is easily counterable by other races' specific units. Ghosts are the counter for every zerg late game units, yet is weak against massive amount of lings.
Lings, on the other hand, are weak against splash dps like tanks and hellbat.
The way i see it, serral pressures maru with lings while maru started to mass ghosts starting at the start of late game phase. Since maru built the counter for late game units, serral pounded him with continuous wave of lings.
Granted with time, i guess maru would've switched into hellbat-tank-mine style that would've bankrupted serral's bank.
@@asyrafilanuar4972 yeah but you can instantly remax on whatever unit comp you want so long as you hit your injects. Terran cant just make 20 ghosts to counter a sudden lurker switch for instance.
@@kaiser2261 there were instances where i see maru turtled his games. In it, he scouted zerg's techs and denied as much zerg expansion as possible while he made expansions himself. They know how much zerg rely on remaxing, but each remax is expensive and maru successfully exploited that weakness by calling down as much mules as he could to rob the map from resources. At the end of those games, i saw serral do the exact same thing, pushing maru every time, but he always runs out of resources first.
I don't know what had changed in this tournament, but he did that last time.

Honestly i just don't get why don't terrans play the marine hellbat composition instead of marine marauder tank or whatever against the mass zergling style. The tanks do more damage to their own units and manage to fire two shots max before they get flanked and killed, every damn time, meanwhile they cost more, take more to build and are immobile or can get caught unsieged making them almost useless. I'd honestly love to see how one of these games plays out if terrans build marine hellbat medivac only
The second you stop making tanks the zerg holds down the roach key and amoves your main

You could give these ling bane armies to 90% of other zerg pros, and they'd still lose to Maru, Serral's assault micro control is legendary.
Watching with different commentators is like watching a different game sometimes! I like your style, but you missed kidnapping the medicavs in game 4 by the vipers which was probably what secured the game for Serral.

Wow, totally outclassed this time. Serral is the best, but this looked like easy mode. I'm glad Serral doesn't play in GSL, because that would have made it less exciting to watch.

I just watched Showtime do the same thing to Maru on the same map as the last game of this series, just using Protoss instead of Zerg.
The difference was showtime was massively ahead in that game and should of won in 10 mins but ghosts are too stronk vs Protoss… was definitely much more even with showtime who was running out of money at the end
honestly it's a sad state when A Clicking 4 full waves of zergling win games against the best Micro Terran.
Serral just ran Maru off the map in games 3 and 4. I never knew ling-bane could do so much

Serral is so good that I don’t enjoy watching his games. There’s very little tension as he just slowly grinds his opponents to dust.

Bit of a complaint here about the current sc2 metagame but I really wish there was more emphasis on teching up to higher tier units rather then spamming low tier ones.
Zerg is espically guilty of this with ling bane and terran to a degree with marines.
ling bane, is one of the highest skill cap builds for mid/late zerg. They are so fragile, yes they are cheap, but only players of Serral's calibre can pull this shit off regularly. Its not just the unit comps, its what the player does with those efficient units

I dont get why Serral resigns Game 2. He had a small bank, could have thrown down a macro hatch, get more queens and production going while sacrificing the third, transferring to the gold and buy time.
Seems like an ok spot, an Marus eco is crippled so he just needs to play for enough time.
Sure Maru has a big army but it would be worth a try, wouldnt it?
I was a little confused that he left while 30 workers ahead. The only reason I can think is that he couldn't get enough larvae to repel the army at his base.

You know the widow mine change in the proposed balance patch? what if instead of a larger space (which would weaken things like maru's drops here which were certainly interesting),
What if instead of that, they had a larger delay on dropping (after the mine comes out) - so runby mine drops are notably less effective, but you can still take as many units across like marus drops, still not unload marines immediately after to take advantage as much and generally keep their utility
A different use case for mines in drops, but still keeping them useful
how much space a unit takes in a transport is a value on the unit (that's what winter said and I don't see a way to have hellbats take 4 slots and lings take 1 otherwise), change it and you are done
I don't know how transports drop is handled, but unless how much time it takes to drop the unit is also a value on the unit itself you need to change how drops work, it's way more involved than a 2->4 edit

Lol... tier 1 zerglings and banes dominating even in the late game. Seriously, banelings are too damn good. Yes its cost inefficient, but if zerg can always outmine opponents, it doesn't matter if they take bad trades if they can just keep remaxing easily. The real problem with banelings is that despite it being cost inefficient, it is actually overpoweringly supply efficient!!! 0.5 supply per baneling that can blow up a bunch of marines or do massive damage to any thing within its aoe. This is why Serral or basically any other zerg players play like this. Outmine opponents, stockup larvae and keep forcing trade with mass banelings which is guaranteed to do certain amount of damage, be it destroying a group of units or command centers.
They should really make the supply cost of banelings to 1 but buff its HP. This way, banelings can no longer flood the map and blowup everything, it'll be easier for tanks and planetaries to clear smaller amount of banelings. Banelings with more HP will be more effective against some units as it will take an additional hit to kill them.
ye lings and banes are tier 1 but they are only units that actually work against ghosts
