RV GPS Battle (Apple vs. Garmin vs. RV Life)⎮ EP 14
We never felt it necessary to have an RV “Safe” GPS. We traveled for 2 years before we decided it was time. What led to that decision was the countless times our GPS put us down the wrong roads, and we had to back out because we couldn’t get turned around. Our preferred GPS was and in many ways still is Apple Maps. But Apple Maps can’t restrict you to roads that you can safely navigate down with an RV. We then tried RV Life’s RV Safe GPS, it works, but it definitely had its downfalls. It restarted more times than we cared. We decided it was time to see what these stand-alone units offered. We reached out to our friends at Techno RV, and they graciously sent us a Garmin RV 890 to test out. We have been using it for about 8 months and almost 5,000 miles, and we are happy to report that anytime we have the RV hooked up, are height restricted, or length restricted, then we will be using the Garmin.

The biggest selling point for the Garmin is the ability plan and save routes ahead of time.

It’s a little work but you can reshape routes too

This video is right on time. I'm planning an RV trip from Florida to Canada. I have a 42 foot class A pulling a Honda CRV. I am very use to the Apple Maps App and I just tested the RV Life app on CarPlay. I didn't like the RV Life app. It still has a ways to go in 2024. The Maps app shows traffic lights, stop signs, etc and you can tell when traffic will clear up or slow down. Now I have an old Garmin RV 770, I have never used it. I just updated it and put my RV dimensions in it. So I will plan my trip with Trip Wizard, Use the 770 while in the RV and Maps App when in the CRV.

The Gorman RV, GPS. Gives you more information if you're pulling a large fifth wheel or travel trailer because you need to know about the roads and low bridges and overhangs. It has always got me to my destination safely. Also I pull a forty ft. fifth wheel. PS a low bridge or bad road can make your day very BAD. LOL.

Great video, some useful information for me. I played with the RV Life app about a year ago as we use RV Trip Wizard for planning. The app wasn't there yet, sounds like it still has some glitches. We use our Garmin like you whenever we are hooked up to our 5th Wheel. The Garmin will show an icon when it doesn't have data on a side road for bridge height, so you always have to watch. Our apple phone is what we use with our other Apps such as All Stays, Open Roads and others while traveling. Crazy how much we depend on technology today. Great Video!

We were skeptical about it until we started using it.

A separate screen for Garmin is a PRO, not CON. Sharing one screen for multi functions is a nuisance. You need to push buttons to change screens and that's a distraction while you're driving. Think about airplanes, they put in separate instruments for each function... they know the right way! I just wish Garmin was a little more affordable.
