- 🍊Squeeze The Orange, making bioplastics from orange peels
Squeeze The Orange is a project by Susana Jurado, Elisenda Jaquemot and Nuria Bonet, created in response to the open call, Remix el Barrio, by SISCODE - El Barri Circular, to reimagine what is possible to make with locally produced food waste. Susana, Elisenda and Nuria used orange peel to create a new bioplastic textile which could be used in a similar application to leather. This recipe is easy to follow and with the right ingredients and equipment can be done in your home kitchen!
✍️Ingredients:
20g wool fiber
5L water
120g orange peel
Calcium Chloride
125g sodium alginate
421g glycerin
56g coconut oil
✍️Equipment:
Strainer
Scale
Spatula
Shredder
Scissors
Frame
Cooking pot
Funnel
SISCODE is an EU research project consisting of 10 labs and makerspaces across Europe - ‘El Barri Circular’ being the pilot of Fab Lab Barcelona. Remix El Barrio, an initiative from El Barri Circular, looks to understand how we might reimagine food waste in our local neighbourhood of Poblenou. This highlighted recipe is one of nine featured during an exhibition of designers and makers transforming food waste into new biomaterials. At Fab Lab Barcelona, our research areas look to further explore the role of maker spaces in creating a more circular economy - thinking global, acting local.

Amazing technique, wish we could have this made into handbags x
love this technique. is this waterproof? can we launder the fabric?
Wow. Amazing idea. Thanks 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for sharing this and help us to make a better future
Please tell me the amount of calcium chloride required for this recipe, the amount you used does not appear. Thank you so much, beautiful experience
10% , with is 10gr in 100 ml
BEAUTIFUL !
Good day! I just wanna ask what is the measurement of the frame that you used, we need it for our research project, thank you.
It is 1 meter for 1 meter. but we recommend starting with smaller frames to make the tests and then go big scale
Oh very cool
Can you use agar agar instead of sodium alginate? And do you still have to follow the procedure without heating the agar agar?
If we leave the mixture in the cold for 2 hours, will we have the same result as if we leave it overnight ? In addition, why do you use coconut oil and calcium chloride Into the mixture ?
I'm not English so sorry for the mistakes
actually i do not use coconut oil anymore, i only use glycerin. yes, you can leave it less time

@@milieu125 i use a fabric with texture. it can be jeans or canvas. the leather does not tear easily because we reinforce it with fiber. without fiber, it tears. it is very durable. it will not become moldy if you accelerate the drying process.
hiii ohh thanks! I have a question...
Why use Coconut oil? what property does it give?? if someone have idea... Thanks
actually the recipe should not be with coconut oil. its better with just glycerine
Pretty cool!
What type of glycerin can we use? I don't know what to buy please help me 😭
I have a question.. is it possible to use this method for other type of items? i mean instead of clothing fabric objects so instead of using a frame.. using a mold for said object?
yes, we actually made some bio-dildo !! it is challenging though because the 3d shape contained in a mold keeps the moisture and what is needed is to dry as fast as possible. for mold i use gelatine with dried food waste or you can even use the pine resin recipe * its in the same series in the fab lab bcn account
you would have a problem with a closed mold if you are not able to air dry it. but yes, we have done 3d objects as well

What white cloth is used in the frame?
We are using a synthetic dense " canvas " like textured fabric. try to make small samples in the beginning , to test the recipe and to modify it according to what you need. I do not recommend to try to make a big amount because ingredients vary from one place to another
What happens to the wool?? Does it dissolve? If it does not how will it spread to other parts when you put it in the frame. Can you cut the wool into tiny parts for it to spread to the entire frame??

Is this waterproof??
@narktect Can I replace the sodium alginate with agar agar powder or xanthan gum? Has anyone done any testing and got the same result?
@@ailtonpereira5818 sorry for the late reply ! ! yes , you can use agar agar or xantham gum, just that its a different recipe and they have some difference in the properties.! in the same account of fab lab bcn i have another recipe using agar! hope its not too late!!
why is wool added? is it resistant as a fabric or breaks when stretched?

you dehydrate orange peel first, then grind it and then put it in water. Is it possible to skip the dehydration step and just blend it fresh?
The orange peel doesn't seem to actually serve any purpose so, I don't think it matters.

Can i reduce the amount of water and other ingredients would still have the same measures? Would it differ?
yes, you need to make the math, if you are casting a small bioplastic you need to calculate the volume you need and adapt the quantities accordingly
Is it effective?
Hello! Can the orange be replaced for watermelon rinds?
for sure! but they need to be dried beforehand!
Hello, I would like to know what is the dimension of the frame that you use please? And the other question is in what way can the calcium chloride be replaced? (Does this serve to absorb moisture and make it more glossy?). Thanks for sharing
hi have you done this yet? i have just tried to make it and mine went moldy i wonder if you had the same thing happen?
Hi, I did it last week but the drying process is still very slow: You can buy some motifs. First, I have not used calcium chloride and I think it is necessary since its property is to absorb moisture and at the same time classify the material. The second thing that happened to me is that I use a completely closed frame, and you need to use a frame that has a breathable fabric underneath so the material can evaporate water faster and dry. Then, because of the mold, I suggest covering the material with a cloth to prevent bacteria from entering and contaminating it. Greetings I hope you serve yourself the advice
@@matiasortega1403 Hi Matias, did the final product last long? or does it just decompose with time, and is it water resistant too? Thank you!
@@michelenewman430 I wonder if you can use clove oil to stop the mould? The same issue can happen with slow-drying pape mache mediums (or even just regular clay can go mouldy) and I've had success with clove oil in the paper mache.
@@karenwilde8575 dear Karen, of course you can add clove, cinammon, rosemary essential oil both for the smell and for moulding , bit in general it is necessary to accelerate the drying process either in a heat drier or with ventilators! Hope it helps
How is this anything more than several fillers being added to calcium alginate?
The orange peel doesn't add any particular property to the calcium alginate.
And how does this solve the issue of calcium alginate's hygroscopic properties? It may not be soluble in water but it'll surely absorb it and go soft as soon as a rain hits it.
I fail to see its benefits in clothing.
I think since it contain celulloce, that make hidrogen bonding to make it more durable....???
Or at least it gave a cool collor since fashion is all about the look..haahah
Pectin and color I guess.
What is the purpose of calcium chloride to spray on that layer
it is making the spherification reaction. you can see it in molecular gastronomy!
What is the purpose of spraying calcium chloride over it
@fablabbarcelona what kind of frame is it and what is the cloth used in it? Is there a substitute I can use if I cant get the exact frame?
What can we use as the alternative of wool fiber?
I am really sure the wool fiber is there use as a reinforcement for the composite! you could try top with some textile waste as polyester or acrylic fibers coming from old sweaters that you can not use anymore or you dont have anything else to do with it than recycle it (insulation from and old coat also could be a good option I guess!) The magic is trying you our receipes and find wonderful solutions!
you can use other fibers as well. better if they are natural fiber, since synthetic ones do not bind with the biopolymer
Flax,hemp or cotton fiber
Does this fabric contain the fragrance of orange?
yes, you can smell orange!
@@narktect hi! is there no reason for the oranges in the recipe? does it serve no purpose?
Hi, may I ask the required temperature and hour for the end product to dry if I put it in an oven? ASAP
50 celcius degrees with air ventilation is fine
Can i not use orange peel and get a same result
orange peel is a filler, you can replace it with other dry matter ( i have made versions with coffee waste, avocado powder e.t.c. if you do not use orange peels, you will not have any color
Can i know how long it’s take for the dehydration
i normally accelerate the drying process either by using a dehydrator or ventilators. so 24 hours
Also can we expose it in the sun to dry it out ?
yes! sun and wind!

Hello, I used the calcium solution before and after a large piece of plastic, bsince the smaller ones have been successful, and I found the plastic to have produced a lot of mold.. I checked the calcium solution and I saw black flakes inside, which I guess meant it was expired. Do you think it was moldy because of the calcium or the room conditions? Such as kitchen cooking vapor etc..?
dear Carla, if you have mold, i would suggest to accelerate the drying process by using ventilators or a dehydrator. mold appears when moisture stays long on the material.

i would not recommend it. firstly it is not coherent to create a composite with biopolymer and synthetic, it is worse than having just synthetic and secondly the polyesther will not stick with the alginate. they will split.
if you want to work with recycling polyester fiber, think of heating, melting and shaping them to objects. similarly done with precious plastic project
