  • I am disappointed with the navigation in my 2017 Chevy Silverado Truck. I'm used to Google maps, always up to date, with real-time traffic. so with the new Chevy Mylink I can use my Phone's navigation on the trucks screen, however I don't want to plug my phone in each time I drive. This is the next best thing. Just drop the phone in place and it not only connects to the data it also charges.

I've considered installing a QI wireless charger under the lid. Have to make sure the phone doesn't end up in the back seat if you open while phone is charging though.

Nice cable.. i use magnetic cables also. Downside is that now you have to buy a cable for every other location that you charge your phone. Constant removal of the magnetic adapter will eventually break the adapter. They are not designed to cone out easily.
When you buy the cables.. get a bunch as finding the same compatible one later can be hard.
This version in the video is one of the best cables out there, strong magnet, connects either way, easily connects. Look for the same pattern on the plug.
Downside can be metal particles. I work with metal and have to constantly clean out the plugs.

Very cool, respect the ingenuity. Not something I’ll do because I switch between Android and iPhone fairly regularly, but a great workaround for a feature that should be wireless to begin with.
I’ve noticed that audio quality seems better via Bluetooth than when plugged in via usb (I stream Spotify and amazon music a lot). I’m curious if anyone else has noticed this as well.
I also like the music menu/UI a lot more when connected Bluetooth than thru Android or Apple CarPlay. It’s a shame maps are superior with one configuration and audio with another.

I had been thinking of using a dex station to do this, but I did not realize that the dex station still uses the cable... About the only thing I think I might have done different was make a slot for the phone (kind of like a magazine well) so the phone just slid into a hole in the dash or console. I know that if I did exactly what you did, the phone would wind up in the back seat every time I opened the console...
Now I have to look for a cable like that with a comparable host mode adapter for my FLIR imager...

A magnetic cable is a great idea. Rather than do all that cutting however, I currently have my plug in cable routed out the molded holes in near the front of the door by the cup holders. I usually plug in and then set my phone over the left most holder. The rubber is non-slip enough to keep it from sliding off and my popsocket acts as added security to keep it in place. I'm gonna sick a magnetic one in there and use duct tape around it to hold it in place. I SHOULD be able to just set my phone down in place on the cup holder to connect it. Excellent mod and idea though! Thanks.

I have a 2015 suburban with nav and I find it quite capable, but basic. I usually use Waze on my cell phone so I get traffic and police reports. I have a coiled short USB cable and use one of the jacks by the cup holders. I don't have the hinged compartment in front of the cup holders, so I have a convenient place for the phone with decent visibility. The 2015 doesn't have apple/google play like the 2017 does.

It would not only eliminate the possibility of a pothole induced disconnect, but it would hide that rough looking hole from the dremel/glue.. But i'm picky like that, it would bug the crap outta me to put in that work and be bothered with occasional disconnects and/or the holes imperfections.

While I agree that the NAV isn't the best the newer models with wireless charging and apple carplay and android auto kinda solve this. BTW Google couldn't find "woodworkers supply" either since it was called "woodcraft"

Yes and to add insult Chevy charges $150 to $200 a year for map updates. A year! After spending how much in this navigation option! Garmin has lifetime updates! Dodge does the same thing. Ford I don't know they wont answer my question yet! The dealer never told me up dates were going to cost extra every year!

Never said anything about $2500 Ok so $400 then $150 a year for updates. Sounds like you need to calm down
