  • WBEN AM-FM-TV Newsman Lou Douglas (1930-2015) talks with union hardhats marching on Buffalo City Hall in May, 1970, in support of President Nixon, the Vietnam War, and the American flag. Featured is Buffalo Mayor Frank Sedita, along with an estimated 3,000 marchers in Niagara Square on Flag Day 1970. This amazing video is a first generation dub from a quad video tape that was in Lou's personal collection. WBEN-TV Channel 4, Buffalo's first TV station, became WIVB-TV in 1977.

    I'm the apprentice Ironworker in the interview. 55 years later, I'm proud of what I did. When the interview got cut off, I was about to say that I had two brothers in the Army, one who was a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam, and they both agreed with me. This meant no disrespect to the troops, and was directed at the politicians who send us to war without thinking through the consequences. The lies told by politicians, such as the whole of Southwest Asia falling if we leave Viet Nam, should be remembered today. Five years after Nixon surrendered (his secret plan), the North Vietnamese fought a border war with Red China over disputed territory. It seems ridiculous now, but 50,000 of my brothers died helping the wrong side in a civil war that we had no business being in. Remember that when today's politicians want us to get involved in more civil wars that are the result of religious sectarians fighting each other. I'm now a retired Ironworker, with a daughter and son-in-law who are both Persian Gulf veterans who agree with me. Don't make my grandsons suffer for the same mistakes. Bill Murphy

      +Bill Murphy Steve Cichon here, Bill... i posted this video, and interviewed Lou about his career in journalism several times through the years. Every time he mentioned you-- The kid who almost got pummeled (and almost got him pummeled) for standing up for what he believed in. Lou passed away earlier this year-- I think he would have loved to reconnect with you. I'm glad you found this video, and glad you were finally able to finish up your comments 45 years later. --

      First off, it's Southeast Asia. Secondly, the domino theory was EXACTLY what happened after we left. Never heard of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rogue? I hope you feel very proud that you in your small part, helped Cambodian communists kill millions in the process of "restructuring" their society.

    Notice how it centered around the flag, a symbol, but something so general it could mean anything/nothing. but what about the war, the answer was alot less convincing, 'we need to support it,' they couldn't explain anything, what about unions and the wage freeze under Nixon, again too complicated. I was actually in support of the construction workers here, but it was just an angry retaliation without substantial aims, they were ultimately gamed by the conservatives by a ridiculous sense of patriotism while they died in wars and lost power in the workplace.

    Time to reform the unions either by replacing them with new ones or by cleaning out the leadership of the corrupt executives who give themselves bonuses and pay raises as membership declines. The 1970 Hard Hats are the unionists we need today.

    • @davidcancinos58
      @davidcancinos58 4 года назад +5

      Well the reason why unions are so fucked up is because of the republican party. Hard hats had went out in behalf of the republicans, Seems kinda fuckin fishy if ya ask me

    • @DerekCivilDefense
      @DerekCivilDefense 4 года назад +4

      @@davidcancinos58 The Republican Party, despite its flaws, has been trying to clean up the corruption in unions while the Democratic Party has been nurturing such corruption since they benefit from it. The union executives complain about Right to Work since it means they would have to work harder and smarter to get more memberships and since it means they cannot take agency fees from those who do not even qualify to join the unions. This means the executives will be less likely to give themselves pay raises and bonuses even as union membership declines.
      Also, public sector unions with the exception of firefighter unions are a disgrace to organized labor since they bargain against the taxpayers and the voters (actual blue collar workers). Teacher unions have defended bad teachers and treated students like car parts on an assembly line and while much of the issues of public education may have to do with administration and the Department of Education, I have yet to see a teacher union organize massive protests against such policies. They will go on strike to get pay raises and send more money to union HQ though.

    Ironically from what I have read and know about Nixon over the years he was always planing on ending Vietnam from the time he went into office, but it took him time to do so. People criticized him for taking so long but look at Obama and Iraq/Afghanistan, no different except the shoe was on the other foot with Democrats and Republicans. Remember it started with the CIA during Kennedy's administration and went full scale under LBJ and ultimately was why LBJ decided not to run a second term because he knew he did not have the support because of the war that had started under his term. Both Kennedy and LBJ where Democrats. So why these guys are all saying they support the war and Nixon seems strange to me. I grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo in the 70"s and enjoyed seeing this, although I was 4yr old when it was aired and of course don't remember it.
