- This is a fast-paced tutorial for replacing the combination meter (sometimes referred to as speedometer, or dash display) on a 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Toyota Pruis (second generation)
This procedure requires removing the multi-function meter (sometimes referred to as touch screen or infotainment). So this video would be helpful to someone needing to replace the multifunction meter.
A malfunctioning combination meter can cause a number of strange symptoms. On some cars the vehicle will not start (power on, turn on, drive), and on some cars they will not shut off. I've even seen examples where the vehicle will run and drive but the speedometer will remain powered off or black.
A combination meter fault will usually be accompanied by a B1271 fault code (DTC)
This can be a costly service at the dealership due to the labor involved in disassembling the dash.
Here is a link to the remanufactured combination meter I installed in this video:

I always perform repairs according the factory service manual. You need to have all the information (toque specs, testing procedures and schematics) to insure you've pinpointed the actual problem and to insure your vehicle is safe after you've completed your repairs. You download high quality factory service manuals here: shrsl.com/1llp5-11y0-aya4
Here is a list of tools I use in this video in order of which they appear (links are for similar tools):

Thank you for this super helpful video, Scooter! Did the job last night, and it was pretty painless! For anyone out there who is curious to know how long this takes or how much effort it is, I'll share a few bits from my experience. It took me just over 3 hours from start to finish. The removal of the old part took about 2 hours, and putting it all back together took about 1. I cracked one of the AC vents (I'm actually surprised I didn't crack all 4), which I super glued back together. In hindsight, I probably could have done without the glue, as shown in the video. I would recommend this job to anyone who considers themself somewhat handy, and has some experience removing various pieces of trim and disconnecting wiring harnesses within a car. This was the biggest job of this type that I've done, and it ended up being pretty easy, but it was nice to have a few smaller jobs under my belt leading up to it (for example, I had to replace the OBD on the same car last year, and I've also removed door panels on other cars to replace lock actuators). The video was super clear. I had to rewatch a few sections a couple times just to be sure, but for the most part, everything I needed to locate and remove was made pretty simple through the video. I really appreciate that this video walks through not only removal, but also putting it all back together (a lot of videos I've seen assume that you'll just remember how you pulled it apart and do the reverse to put it back together). Funny enough, the most challenging part for me was removing the two little tabs that cover the screws within the glove box, which undoubtedly should have been one of the easiest parts. Thanks again, Scooter, and good luck to anyone who takes this project on. If you think you can probably do it, you can do it!
Thank you! 2024 now and I just completed the work on our 2008 with 187,000 miles on her. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this video. I am using it in 2024 so it is very much still valid!. My Prius had been in the desert sun a lot and was going on 17 years old which made the vent plastics basically like glass (Your demo broke 1 and all 4 of mine broke). A whole replacement set of aftermarket vents on Ebay was about $70. I had watched several videos, but yours was so much faster, it was the one I referred to, to make sure I followed the steps in the proper order and turned all the right screws. I changed out the troublesome capacitor on the Combination Meter myself
RUclips has saved me a lot of money over the years but this might be the winner. You can solder in a new capacitor to the meter and this repair is basically free! Took me just under 3 hrs start to finish. GREAT tutorial!! Thank you. This music will forever be burned my brain!
Thank you for doing this. Saved myself around 1200. Should note to everyone, that every plug removal is dependant on depressing a small tab. The 12mm bolts are HELLA hard to turn so be warned. The vent bezels are extremely delicate. Once you get to the brains, its easy. Thank you
Just used this to replace my combo meter in my Prius.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you
Completed the work this morning, play/pausing through this post; on a 2007 Prius. Fantastic walk-through; down to every detail. Car is back in business, and I've avoided paying 800 to the 'stealer, by ordering lifetime warranty refurb from Texas Hybrid Battery. Thank you Garret, awesome vid.
I just replaced two combination meters. One on my Prius and one my sister's Prius. I followed your advice ordering my refurbished combination meters from Texas Hybrid Batteries. Both combination meters work great. Again, thanks for the advice on Texas Hybrid Batteries.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We used this video this past week to take apart the dash to access the Combination Meter in our 2006 Prius. Amazing! Very clear instructions for taking it apart & putting it all back together. We are not mechanics by any means, so we knew this was going to be a big job for us, but watching this video & following it step-by-step made it really simple & straightforward. It took us just over 3 hours from start to finish, which seems to be about the average time for the job. Soldered on the new capacitor, put it all back together & we are good to go. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video!
San Antonio native and fellow ASE Master here. I owned an 07 Prius from 217 to 277k and sold to a family member. It's just now developing this problem at 312, and I may be on the hook to fix it at some point, so this was helpful. I scrolled down to see where you were getting this music only to find out you're making it? Sweet. Love chiptunes stuff! I teach automotive at a community college down here. I think you'd be good at it, and we may have some openings soon. Anyway, i subscribed. Good stuff!
I actually studied education at university of Montana! Keep me posted with the openings! Feel free to email me at garretseesingofficial@gmail.com
Thank you so much for doing this video! Completely fixed my Prius combination meter issue pairing your video with some other videos on changing the capacitors on the circuit board! . Love how you showed putting everything back together so I didn’t have to rewind and follow the first of the video backward. Love the music. Felt like I was playing a 1980’s video game while I fixed my car. Great production value and camera angles. Thank you again!
Fascinating video. Kudos to auto mechanics/techs. You folks are the best! I wish I were brave enough to attempt this.
Yo, BIG THANK YOU for this video. My wife and I little to no mechanical knowledge, but thanks to your video we managed to fix this problem. THANK YOU!
I did the work with a friend of mine. It took about 2 hours. The video was excellent. I bought a second hand combo meter from ebay. I just told the mileage. No issues works great.
What do you mean you just told the mileage?
@@friedpickles342 when you order a meter the seller should program it with the VIN and the mileage of your vehicle.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Your video was succinct, to the point, and perfect for helping me install the new combo meter. I really appreciate it. People like you make RUclips such a great resource.
Thank you for making this well detailed video... perfect for anyone doing this job.
Awesome video. Especially for those of us that are DIYing it. Thank you!
Ordered the part for 300 after core return. Took 2 hours to do complete. Matter resolved. Good video.
Did you have the odometer programed?
@@jerryduffey1118 Yes. Upon ordering, in my case autozone, they ask for the mileage and the company, Dorman, programmed it at shipping. They seems to be the big dog in the field.
Thanks for the video! I was finally able to fix this problem after years of annoyance!
This was a great video, I was able to complete the same repair in 2 1/2 hours. Thank you, much appreciated
Great video and im glad you showed every step by step 👏🏽 UNFORTUNATELY I’m a person with no patience and i would loose my mind lol
Awesome breakdown man. It's all anyone would need. Thank you
This video and the refurb combination meter from Texas Hybrid Parts were a real life saver. Have a 2004 Prius with 213k and with car prices being what they were sure didn't want to replace it now. Meter on ours would intermittently just go black every other week or so with no reliable way to bring it back on. First time taking a dash apart but with the video there's really nothing to it, just time consuming and you gotta be gentle if you don't want to crack anything. If anyone's on fence about trying this though, it's basically just like Legos, just do it in the right order and it's not so bad. Thanks again!
Ty great video I just followed your instructions and successfully replaced the combination meter. Only thing is the tool kit you recommended didn’t have a 12mm which kinda sucked to stop half way. Order the part and wait for same day delivery. Other than that thank you so much! 🙏🏼
Awesome work, this video made the job much easier. Thank you.
All my vents shattered gotta love it. Great video though very helpful
Great video!!!! Every last detail.!
Thank you so much I got my combination meter from texas hybrid battery and this video was the walkthrough I needed thanks so much
How much did you pay for the combo meter, if you don’t mind me asking?
Great video thanks . Didn’t realize until watching a few times that part broke in 2 that sucks
Another great video, keep up the good work
Thanks man!
AMAZING VIDEO! SUPER HELPFUL!
You make great videos man, keep doing what your doing haha 👍🏻
Thank you very much!
Thank you as well so much for this video! Super easy to take apart and put back together. Did it in a little over 2 hrs but this definitely helped and I’m sure saved a bunch of $$$&
You are amazing, great tutorial!!!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Great job with this video. 👍
Fantastic video! Helps a ton!
The music is exactly the right vibe for doing this work. So, so, so many dashboard parts.
my dashboard doesn't turn on at all. I changed the capacitor for one of 220uf 16v capacitor and problem solved. thanks for that video it is very helpful for those of us who need a hand. gracias por este excelente video
Is it hard to change the capacitor?
@@elisadasilva8321 yes
Oh my god...what a job that is
Great video. Thank you
Thanks great job God bless you
Wow, you’d think they would make you have to take the whole car apart to replace the one part. LOL
Thanks awesome video guide true the whole process I was able to do it no issues at all really helped me big time appreciate this definitely save some $$..
Glad to help my friend!
NICE VIDEO
Makes me wanna remove the dash portion with a sawsall.
So helpful
Great video dude! Love the music :0
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Great stuff you gave me confidence DYI
That's so great to hear! Thanks for sharing!
I think I have to replace the bulb for my check engine light. Is this how I would go about getting to that bulb? If so, is it easy enough to find which bulb it is?
Possible to supplement the combination meter with an analog speedometer? There are certain daytime lighting conditions where reading the factory speedometer is difficult.
This video smacks!
You smack!
Damn how much does it cost to have this done?, it is a lot of work.
Great Video!, I did everything and it works but i now have an air bag light. From what i recall, there was 1 airbag plug (yellow) we disconnected. I double check connection it was fully seated. I went into diagnose screen by connecting pin 4 and 13 on the OBDii. there was some BS code that did not involve air bags. I cleared it anyways . it did not clear red air bag light. Anyone have same issue? Can anyone assist ?
hey Garret thanks for the video. I thought your name sounded familiar, the hair threw me off. We went to highschool together!
-Alex Cromwell class of 07
Haha no kidding! I guess the world gets smaller every day! Hope you're doing well!
@7:20 The two tabs sticking out of the foam padding that are between the speaker and the red wire. Are they supposed to connect to anything? I put the dash back in, everything seems to be in the proper place and everything works correctly but the dash now bounces at about the point of those two tabs. I checked inside the dash and car for a part that I may have dropped but couldn't find anything. I'm wondering why if it's back together like it was why does it bounce now.
Some videos I've seen say that you must have the new combo meter programmed with your exact odometer reading prior to installation. Others say this isn't necessary. Which is it?
I've always had the part programmed by the part vendor. I've actually never tried it the other way. Worth a shot I guess!
Watching this just makes me think that you're taking way too much extra stuff off that doesn't need to be removed. They could have made this job a lot easier
Amazing!
What is the name of the songs playing?
Be interesting to know the model of the Snap-on thing
Do i have to reprogram the keys or anything like that? OR, is it just a matter of replacing the old one?
The keys won't have to be reprogrammed but the board will be reprogrammed for you by the company you purchase it through
Scooter do you do side work?
I need to do this to my daughters car, do I need to have the module programmed or is it just plug and play?
From what I’ve read and researched, yes it has to be programmed with you mileage and VIN from who you buy it from
@@AylaHirsch Thats kinda what I thought too.
I bought a second hand one and told the maker what I thought the mileage was. It worked with no issues. The VIN wasn't required.
@@AylaHirsch how do you get your mileage if your speedometer has gone dark?
There is a workaround of replacing a dying capacitor, with a exact new one or a slight bigger one instead of the entire board. Not to mention allot of these boards still have a issue of not registering mileage pass 299k miles. Great video though.
So is it a power up of the board issue?
The vent surrounding the shifter shattered with almost no pressure. I don't know that I could remove it whole at least on the car I have. I hope a yard has one.
What does it keep crapping out only when it's cold outside
Duuude,, this music though.. HAHA
Hello bro, my Prius 05 steering wheel very tight when turning.
The prius electric power steering unit is under the dash attached to the steering column. Its not fun to replace but its most likely your problem.
Great video... It worked! Thanks.
Could that same code cause the red triangle of death to appear on dash?
Yes indeed
Thank you! Should I just replace the odometer even though it works just fine?
Bad battery
Great video but the music? I have to go bang my head on the pavement for a half an hour to get that sound out of my head
What is the -330 on the gauge cluster?
How long did it take you to do in all?
I've done a ton of these and I can usually complete the job in a little over an hour
Whats the fix for first gen wont lock in park.
My Son has a 2005 Prius and was just in a wreck. His fault, he was OK, Liability insurance only... His Drivers side curtain air bag deployed. Since then, the vehicle will only go into Neutral and Park. Is there a switch that can be reset to allow it into Drive ? I'm thinking that if there is no such switch, that the car rendering itself undriveable until the airbag is repaired... Whats your thoughts ? Thought maybe its something in the Combination Meter... Great video by the way !
Can I bring my Prius to you for you to fix my combination meter?
Hahah maybe! Are you in the Austin area?
@@Scooter_911 No I’m in Orangeburg SC
I wish you would’ve showed the dashboard working
Can you replace my Prius combination meter ?
Are you in the Austin area?
Can this metter also cause VSC/ABS lights to come on?
I have never seen that personally. In order to properly diagnose the ABS system you will need to use a scan tool.
I can refurbish combination meter myself, it really isn't that hard as someone who can work on electronics. What scares me is this dash removal.
How much for such a job ?.
So it's like brain surgery, but harder?
Kai-rolla?????
Hahaha coming soon
Toyota has a 9 year extended warranty for this problem. 3 year base warranty + 9 year extended warranty = 12 years of coverage.
Unfortunately it specifies 9 years after DOFU (date of first use). Not 3+9. I think they calculated the warranty to end right before the problems really starts popping up. We noticed out in 2016 (2007 Prius) and because they could not replicate the problem (only happened I winter in the morning) they wouldn't fix it. Now it happens all the time and of course it isot of the warranty.
For a second I thought the dashboard was Alcantara
Nah will keep useing the work around until I junk it. LOL
This is a bit much to do. Hopefully, the workarounds always work.
Other tasks to do while you are in there: Satellite radio if you want it.
AC Evaporator.
That background noise sucks, and I had to turn it off and hoped you never said anything on how to do something
I love how in the Mercedes its literally a 5-10 second job. Put in the cluster keys and pull it out... fuck toyota
good video but the music sucks
burn the Prius and get a real car
Imagine
This mans jealous he cant get 50mpg 🤣🤣
Best car ever!
