I have exactly the same sander. I added three layers of diet coke can material to act as shims on one side of the bar that sits in the recess. I cut the shims to the same size as the side of the bar, and glued them on with normal superglue. The ‘error’ on the gauge was then reduced from about 4 degrees to just under one degree.
Been thinking of getting a small sander like this for sharpening hand tools and small wood item sanding. Do you recommend this make and model? Also is it built well and is good quality?
For small wood item sanding it is absolutely perfect in my opinion. Pretty much all the ones that look like this are made in the same factory with just a few slight differences like styles of knobs, colour and shape of the tables. There's only a small variation in price so just look out for one that suits your pocket and perhaps colour, if that's important to you. I have sharpened with it but I now have a Sorby Pro-edge which is in a different league for that. With the Sealey you would need to make jigs to get consistent angles but it will work. It's a fraction of the price of the Sorby. I hope that helps. Reach out if you have further questions.

I've seen a few versions in friends' workshops and they really are much of a muchness. I bought this one because it was the cheapest I could find as I only had a limited budget when I bought it. Belts and discs are easy to find. Most places that sell abrasives will sell them. TBH I use Amazon as I have a Prime account and they'll normally come next day. I've not changed the disc yet, I mostly use the belt, and I think it's adhesive iirc rather than velcro as on a random orbital sander. To change teh belt you take the side off and release the tension. It's screws rather than knobs but it's only a 2 minute job. I've seen one guy who leaves the side off as he changes belts regularly for rough sharpening chisels, it's doable but sketchy. For something like lawn mower blades it would be excellent. Secatuers might be trickier unless they come apart but that's the same for most sharpening systems for them, in my experience. @@mattseymour8637

It always makes me smile too see a person's face when they are unpacking a new tool / machine...... it's always like being a kid getting an xmas present you really wanted lol. Like the look of that mate. I may see if Santa might invest in one for me lol. Hows it performing Andy are you happy after using it for a bit. I go to the local recycle centre and get the Hoover hoses from the skips off the dumped hoovers. Cut the hose into 5 inch lengths and attach them to the machines exhaust spigots by gently warming the hose and pushing them on. Then the arm of my workshop hose slides straight into the 5 inch piece of hose .. . Might be an idea mate ?........ just like panto. ..... its behind you .... lol
Yeah, I'm definitely pleased with this one. That's an idea with the hoses. I shifted everything around in the Tinkerage then pretty much took the summer off so my brain is still locked into the old places I put things.
I've been eyeballing one of that type of sander for a while, they look super useful for small woodworking projects. We'll see if I can wait a few months for your review or if I get impatient and throw my money at someone beforehand.
I don't like seeing or doing reviews on items just out of the box but I will say I wish I had pulled the trigger on getting this months ago. As I mention in the video there is some real fettling needed to get it set up right. I've already had the belt grinding out a slot next to the table in trying to get it at 90 degrees to the belt. That may be a batch issue of course. I don't know if the Axminster version might require less fettling. I batched out a stack of oak keyrings for a craft fair last weekend and I certainly wouldn't have been able to do that in the time without it.
@@TalesFromTheTinkerage You can never get the measure of a tool until you've worked with it a while and found out it's foibles. I had earmarked the Axminster myself, but there's a few at a similar price, more research required

I don't think you'll go far wrong with the Axminster if you can't wait for my review.
