Preparing for Takeoff - VF-31

- This video was shot during the final flyoff of the Tomcats of Carrier Air Wing 8 on March 10, 2006. This particular video shows the Squadron CO's F-14D from VF-31 "Fighting Tomcats" preparing to launch. This video gives a great view of the process required to maneuver an aircraft on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Note the Yellow Shirts; they are the ones directing the aircraft. See if you can figure out what their signals mean! This video was shot by yours truly with a Sony DSC-P200 on March 10th, 2006.
The F-14 looks even sexier with the wings in the over-sweep position. This was my childhood dream, along with every other kid who was born in the 80s. Never got to do it but it would've been retired before I even got the chance anyway. My life took a different turn but I still love this aircraft and I envy the pilots who got to fly it and defend our nation in the process.
RetroCNY , that’s what we regret in life.
Hey, The F-14B Tomcat. Fly it in DCS.
These men that flew these planes as well as this squadron were legendary.
I respectfully disagree. Ready to launch, with wings swept forward, kneeling nose landing gear and dropped slats and flaps, Tomcat looks like a bird of prey ready to pounce. With wings swept fully back (not overswept) that single leading edge of the wing and wing root is what makes it ultimately sexy, in my opinion.
Anytime, baby!
Working the ramp for civilian aviation is dangerous in itself. But working carrier deck is in a world of it's own. Absolutely unreal how it all works. I never get tired watching these videos. 🇺🇸
Described as the world’s most dangerous working environment, the flight deck of an aircraft carrier is extreme. In the small span of the flight deck aircraft take off, land, and taxi, ordinance is moved around - and all this is done 24 hours a day, outdoors, in every sort of weather possible. Aircraft carrier flight deck crew must be professionals to know their way around and to get the job done without being injured or killed in the process. 😎
Extreme skill getting the bird that close to the edge of the deck. I am shocked.
I remember walking chock and chain when that squadron was on the Forrestal back in 1988. I love that the squadron name predated having the Tomcat by over 30 years and that Felix was given two tails.
Why not,the 15s,16s and 18s are created in the 70s
@@emmettsummerford8040 The F-15 and 16 are not carrier capable aircraft.
I transfered into VF-31 during the transition from F-4's and did two cruises onboard the Kennedy with 31 as a troubleshooter in the IWT shop. There was nothing like watching them go to zone-5 on the cats at night. They will be missed!
zone5 is? full AB?
@@SSaugaCriss yes on the F14A the TF-30’s had 5 stages (or ‘zones’) of afterburner and zone-5 was full AB
I did a deployment on the John F Kennedy CV67 in VA75.
I miss Tomcats so much ..i wish the are still in USA service😢😢
I got a feeling they'll be back, badder than ever!! Doc Mike USN FMF
@@michaelashcraft8569 nah man. They've been gone too long now. no way theyre comin bacc
I'm enjoying the hell out of them in DCS (simulator). Maybe not as advanced as the F18 super hornet, and I'll get shot down a lot by them, but I just love the temperamental character of the older systems/analogue flying controls of the F14B tomcat. It feels very rewarding if you succeed, and you look phreaking cool while doing it too.
1:33 Man, you got *guts* getting THAT close to the edge!!! 😲😲😲😲😲😲😲
Nah......you just do exactly what the aircraft director tells you to do. After a while it's not that big a deal
Then you got TRUST getting that close
definitely in the danger zone
The pilot in “100” aced parallel parking in highschool
When I, 19 I worked for Grumman on the F14. Most likely I worked on one of these. Beautiful plane.
Can you talk a little about the wing boxes? I keep reading how the Navy cut them to prevent them from flying ever again… but why can they not be repaired/replaced?
I love how the SQN Cmdr just turns that thing on a dime like parking in the garage at Home! Awesome Teamwork
I was stationed with VF-31 from '93 - '97 when they were at NAS Miramar and did 2 WestPAC's with them aboard USS Carl Vinson.
long live vf84,vf103,vf101 and defently long live the best plane ever f-14.
Anytime Baby!!!
This is art.
These old F14 Tomcat videos are pretty cool.
I always loved how the Tomcat's front squatted, right before take-off!!! @ 3:24
It's the only plane that can bow and wave (wing spoilers) after an air show performance
The Skippers bird looks Awsome! EDIT: and that yellow shirt can direct!!
Tomcat footage never gets old❤❤❤
My Favorite Navy aircraft always!
I love me some Tomcats, baddest of the badasses !! BRING 'EM BACK !!
That's just sentimental. They now have F-35B's. I'm sure that any current naval aviator would rather fly that than an F-14.
Always loved how VF-31 (at least for this cruise) had two CAG birds, and both different.
The red one is about the coolest scheme ever. Red tail and black nose..... perfect
On display in Nassau County NY
I was actually the plane captain for 100 sitting on the Cat in this vid lowkey brings a lonely tear to my eye VF-31 last tomcat squadron 🥲
Was my first command from 1989-1991 out of NAS Oceana Virginia Beach VA
yeah, I know, but watch some of my other videos, that's when they take off. I didn't know it took that damn long to prepare for takeoff! I was hoping to get taxi and takeoff in one video but it would've been 30 minutes long :(.
One of the best clips, I was a tow bar repair man also.
Nice driving skills 💪
AWG 9 and AIM 54 Phoenix...deadly combination....
I know, I didn't think it'd take that long for them to prepare for takeoff. Trust me, if the video showed them taking off, the video would've been another 20 minutes. I have other videos of them taking off, watch them!
Very nice video. This is a universal video. Thank you for your video. I hoped that the time of the video would be even longer after the planes took off
@9TKyuubi My most favorite words when a cruise or short sea trial was over would have been "wrap the waist, wrap the bow, secure the deck for high wind traffic."
I’m just wondering how he recorded this without the radar impacting the recorder every few seconds? I took my handicap on the Conny in 2001 and it was annoying after a while.
Who flew the #100 bird? I know the pilot is Capt. Dan “Dix” Dixon, but who was his RIO in the video? Is that the CAG’s bird?
Seeing an F-14 with bombs on it is like seeing a muscle car with a trailer hitch
Or the Dodge Charger with a snow plow in Out Cold
Who was 100 plane director while making all those turns on the edge of EL-1 ? Didn't see any.
I have a video of that plane 100th squadron VF-31 tomcaters on my channel, it is in a museum
An entire squadron of Hornets photobombing at 2:36...
The 14 always reminded me of a WASP with its wings in the back mode...
Would you happen to have any Vf-1 or Vf-74 footage?
i love the filxcat !
hell yeah they r huge in person never got to see one on the deck of my ship just 18c/e/f's,ea6b's,e-2c's,and c2-a but i have seen enought tomcats fly back in school and on base and shit it was one of the best planes out there and will really b missed by all, gear set 54,000 for a tomcat. im a gear dog.
Felix The Cat Squadron pride~!!
yeahh baby
Did you take this video of yourself? Great to see!
Awesome.. thanks 👍🇳🇿
Nothing else screams "Bird of prey" like a TomCat
Meanwhile the rest of us mere mortals have to contend w/ fuckers who can't even park between two lines in a parking lot.
Tomcats and Targets
It's like trying to parallel park a 60s Cadillac in downtown New York in modern day
I wanna cry.
I suspect this is during a workup prior to deployment. Nice seeing the felix squadron still operational.
the ex-o bird is with the red tails, cag bird black tails
Jet with the red tails is the Commanding Officer's jet. The XO is assigned to 102, and it was a grey jet.
It's like watching live action Macross.
Some of your ship mates long gone is still with you
Under an top
BLESSED Be
AN I'm still here
I still see my Red under
The last cruise for the F 14 I was on a cruise 2005 2006 Roosevelt

l' F 14 e sto il più bel caccia in dotazione alla marina degli U.S.A. peccato che non abbia avuto seguito come l' F18
Type "3 Flight Tomcat Launch" in the search bar to see the catshots up close.
Would have been better if you included the take-off on this video
Key word: PREPARING.
Triple Tomcat launch may have what you're looking for
I was an plane captain on the USS Enterprise 1976-1980 we had tomcat aboard love to see them take off especially at night u would see a glow of fire flying away and quick too, my bird was the A7E with VA-27 out of NAS Lemoore CA. I love working on flight deck it was dangerous but an Adventure *****
Last Cat Standing, Baby
i cant believe such a plane was created back in the 60s!
Why not? The SR-71 was created in the 50s.
What does the "VF" stand for?
FS = Fighter Squadron
VF= ?
@@keijomattinen5447 Like @Slipknotpimp 666 said, it's the designation for fighter squadron in the navy. The "V" is designation for the Navy and "F" is for fighters.
VF: V= Fixed-wing, F= Fighter
VA: V= Fixed-wing, A= Attack
VFA: V= Fixed-wing, FA= Fighter Attack
@@MrFloppyHare The "V" designates Fixed-wing aircraft
@@ad1vet783 because the lovely angry Kitty 🐈 Tomcat has no fixed Wings ....] or > most badass long range Interceptor ever ❤️. Never forget the plane too inspiring me became a Aviator.
Kids today just want to be Darth Vader I’d swap that for one of these

Actually the Hornets were a choice also. The US Navy was recommended the YF-16 (F-16) instead of the YF-17 because it performed better as a small multirole righter. However the Navy felt that the YF-17 suited their needs better, and the YF-17 prototype later became the F-18.
So you decided to waste another 30 seconds by commenting? Lol it's ok, you kind of strike me as the type whose entire life is wasted, so don't feel too bad :). I could tell all that just in 5 of your badly punctuated words!
