- Welcome To The Bench Jewelers Work Shop: Today's video is troubleshooting the grandfather's clock chime barrow. When Cleaning your clock be sure to oil the slider chime adjuster. On the Chime barrow, your will see several moving parts which I show in this video to make sure everything is sliding freely and that the right amount of oil is used. Thanks For Watching.

You have created the perfect video to motivate me to finally doing some maintenance on the Grandfather Clock I purchased new in 1981. There has been no maintenance performed on the clock. The chimes stopped working reliably several decades ago. The clock still tells time perfectly with slight adjustments to the pendulum arm length. I have opened up the side access panels to the clock where I can easily access the clock workings and after viewing this video, I now have a clear understanding which gears and levers operate the chime cam and chimes. Thank you for the clear picture and narrative of their operation, cleaning, and lubrication requirements. I purchased the Red Dragon Clock Oil Kit you reference and look forward to learning how to care for this clock and to placing it back into full-operating condition. Thank you!!!
I just bought a Ridgeway Grand Father clock at an estate sale. It was less then a hundred dollars because it doesn't chime, the front door lock didn't work, painters tape to close it and a tag that said "as-is". I replaced the lock from a clock site but the clock would run for awhile then stop. I levelled it and it runs great but won't chime. Your video was a big help understanding what to look for. When I'm over the flu, I'll see about the clock. Thanks for the info.
Always happy to hear and help...

December2/23 watched video on, seized chimes. Follow your directions oiling. Worked wonderful thank you very much. I appreciate everything.
I would like to thank you immensely on these videos. I recently bought 2 not working Grandfather clocks & with your guidance via RUclips video, have repaired & oiled both using the clock oiling kit I purchased from you. Your videos are invaluable & are extremely helpful for someone like me. My next endeavor is my Black Forest Cuckoo clock which needs oiling & has an issue with the music box that I suspect is actually a chain issue. Chains are corroded.Thank You again.
Let me know how you get along with the cuckoo clock. Music box problems most often are due to the governor's gear box worn. The Bench Jeweler Mike.
Excellent video! I did not realize that there was a "switch" in the clock that changed or turned the chimes off. It was a simple answer to my issue. Many thanks for a well-done instructional video!
Thanks
Thanks for the reply and update The Bench Jeweler Mike
i am a new subscriber and you have already helped me with a problem. Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thank you for you're really great guidence and advice.
Super and easy to understand. Useful for many different clock makers by focusing on the generic nature of the mechanism.
Set the lever to off and then see if the tune barrow
slides back an forth
My clock would not chime, this video helped me fix it, Thanks!
This video was very helpful! My chime bar was stuck, but now is free and my clock is chiming. I had changed the chime before a sequence stopped.
My grandfather clock is a Kieninger from the 1970's when I was in the Army in Germany. It will NOT strike or chime. Cleaned it and oiled it! Chime and strike is in the "on" position. PLEASE can you help me or will I have to take it to a clock repair? Also as you requested on the back of the clock states, 1271 No (O) Jewels unadjusted, if that helps. Thank you so much for time and consideration........

Many thanks for your videos and the oiling kit!
I have a Howard Miller model 610-406. I have oiled it and made certain the chime barrel slides from silent to all three chime selections. It still will not chime unless I gingerly flick the flywheel to help it along. It does not appear that the cables are wound incorrectly.
Any thoughts?
First of all you are very informative ( thanks! ) I have that exactly type of clock thank goodness. My clock strikes a hour behind, every time. How to I correct that ?
I have a Ridgeway grandfather clock. It has a Hermel works 451-033. It is chain driven with 3 chains. When looking at the front of the clock the right chain moves freely in both directions. Can you tell me what needs to be done to fix it. I have reached out to a few places in the area and everyone says the works need to be replaced.
THANK YOU -- CLOCK WONT STRICK.----WITH YPUR HELP NOW CLOCK STRICKS.
Very informative video. Our chimes are not working, I think we would be interested in the cleaning kit.
I followed your videos and cleaned my Emperor GF clock for the 2nd time in 3 years. When I reassembled it the Westminster chime now plays out of sequence. It seems to play the last two notes at the beginning. All the hammers are moving and striking, How can I adjust this so the notes are again in proper sequence? The clock stamps reads; 84 MADE FOR EMPEROR CLOCK COMPANY BY HERMLE BLAcK FOREST CLOCKS 451-050H 94 CM/66. Thank you. Bob
My ridgeway grandfather clock won’t chime previous owner said her husband removed a part perhaps a rod so it will stay silent. Model is 451-033 H Has a letter D stamped on top of brand name. Any help?
When you look at the front of the dial, on the right side of the dial is there a slot and words showing the different tunes? Mike E The Bench Jeweler
I see this was three years ago, but I'm going to give it a try since I'm here. My grandfather clock plays the music on the hour but doesn't chime the time after, what could be wrong?
There are two levers on the front of the movement as the chime plays the tune the cam goes around and lifts a long arm lever which trips the striking cam and the rack which gives the time by striking the tune bar. Sometimes if the minute hand is turned backward it can jam the rack which looks like a bunch of stairs or pointed teeth. you need to check the rack first to see if its free moving. The Bench Jeweler
Thanks so much for your videos. I recently bought three Howard Miller clocks (all non-working). I have two of them working but the second one will not chime. My question is on Chime Rods. Can you change them and do they have a musical note stamped on them? I have had to make some modifications as I take some parts from one of the clocks and use it on the other. One last question. Do you recommend cleaning the movement when you get these kinds of clocks? How would you recommend I clean it? Thanks
Hi again! I have a kieninger modle k triple chime grandfather clock, when i got it, the plastic switching lever was broken so i ordered a new one, problem is i had to unscrew the lever to put the new piece in, and now its not set at the exact perfect depth to follow the chime, like when i have it on silent, it will chime, ill adjust it just a tad, and it is silent but then it's also silent for the next chime. Errrrggg very frustrating trying to get it perfectly aligned, gave up for now until I'm less frustrated lol
I bought a Howard Miller Bartow Grand Father Clock in an auction about 5 or 6 years ago. I had it serviced and it worked flawlessly. All of a sudden the hour chimes would be off sync. One o'clock would chime 2 or 3 times, 12 o'clock it would chime as many as 14or 15 times. I cleaned and oiled it and it keeps good time but the chime go out of sync periodically. According to the paper work it was bought by the original owner in 1972. The numbers on the back of the works says: Howard Miller No.8197. The model number of the clock is 860. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tim
THANK YPU FOR YOUR HELP
Hello I have a pearl 1161-850A. The weights are not dropping and in a few minutes the pendulum stops swinging. Ive blown it out with air with no luck. I would appreciate any help you can offer. Thank you
Depending on the age of movement, the clock movement has to be oiled and I have several videos that show how to do it. I use mineral spirits and tight wound swabs to clean the clock pivots then using the right clock oil helps a bunch. Use clock oil only, no spray oils or 3 & 1 oils. The Bench Jeweler Mike E
@@rhjgold Hey man thank you for taking the time to help me service my clock. I took the movement out soaked it in a movment cleaner and oiled it. She came to life and sounds fantastic. Thank you for taking the time to help me out.
I have a Danekar Grandfather clock. This clock has always been 2 hrs. slow it's whole life. Raising or lowering the pendulum does not fix this. Beside this issue, the chimes stopped working. I have moved a lever a while back which has caused this. Now placing the lever in it's original state, it still does not chime. Maybe the whole chiming mechanism is stuck? I will check to see that it springs back and forth in the 12 o clock position as you suggest.

I have a 2017 Kieninger KSU78 cable-driven triple chime replacement movement in a Trend grandfather clock that runs extremely well EXCEPT the chime train recently started running without stopping (until the cable runs out). The clock repairer I used to use has retired, so I am on my own. Is this likely a lubrication issue or something more severe? If lubrication, is it something I can address without removing the movement from the case?
I’ve recently begun making payments for purchasing a Howard Miller New Yorker (610-160) grandfather clock, which didn’t work for more than a couple hours before with no chimes. Yesterday, I oiled it on the pivots on the back side and some front side ones that I could reach without removing the face plate, but then I realized that the clock does not click or trigger the chimes at all on the quarters. I only hear the warning clicks. It now keeps time and chimes when I hit the chime lever, albeit very slowly, but not at all on its own. The hour chime doesn’t trigger the strike afterwards either. Any suggestions?
Is this a new clock that you purchased or an older clock? Ok, If it's an older clock can't oil just the back and hope for the best on the rest of the clock's moving parts! Every pivot must be cleaned and oiled. If you watch our videos you can decide if cleaning and oiling the clock is right for you. Tips Don't use 3&1 oils sewing machine oil or other such types of oils. You can buy clock oil made to do the job from our website or a clock cleaning kit. If the chimes are running very slow the oil is dried up and the whole clock needs to be cleaned. If the chime lever drops most of the time if it won't chime the strike won't work either. All the timing levers and cams have to be running in sequence. www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oils

I have a Seth Thomas grandmother clock. I can't get the right or left weights to move. The center one does and it keeps appropriate time. The outer bars stopped working after my sister wound them . They were working before. Facing the clock the left bar is on my right and the right bar is on my left.
I have a grandfather clock that chimes on every quarter and no problem. However, it is not striking on the hour. The gear attached to the star wheel is not moving. How should I address this?
How do I slow down the chime on empire grandfather? Mine has started playing so fast you can’t make out the tune it’s playing.
At the top of your clock movement, you'll see a governor that looks like a butterfly. If the shaft it’s attached to is spinning freely, the butterfly needs to be adjusted to slow down the chime. Gently hold the butterfly with your finger. If the chimes are playing too fast, it means the butterfly is too loose and needs adjustment. Be very careful as the shaft on the butterfly is weak and can bend without much pressure. Let me know what you find out. The Bench Jeweler
Hi, we just received a beautiful Colonial of Zeeland. It was manufactured in 1976. The chimes will not chime. We believe the hammer chimes are free however on the hr and every 15, only clicks, no chimes. There are 3 weights, which feel the same weight.
As a rule, one weight will be heavier than the other two, which go on the far right side of the clock, which is the chime weight. The center and left weight are time and strike. Is your clock a cable wound or does it have chains? Also, does it only play one tune, or is there a selector that can be changed to three different tunes?
It has chains, and it can play three different toons.
Hey, good evening, awesome video, son, everything you say. The clock is working been working for 3 days but I still can't get it to chime on the hour. It is an emperor claw company. By black hermely black forest clocks. It's a number 80 two, is this 40 or 451 - 05 oh, speech. This is 94 centimeters in 66 centimeters. I can't get that barrel. To move is freely as the one in your video.
Hello, my husband wound the chimes yesterday. Something happened that is affecting the chimes. Only the middle weight is moving. I know this means the chimes are not on. When I move the chime lever to select the sound. It slides up and down without sticking on any of the 3 sounds available. Is there any way to fix it or do I need to contact someone to repair it?
The best time to move the chime tune lever is at 12 o'clock and after it has stopped chiming. There is less chance of jamming the chime barrow. If your clock has side panels, you can check the chime barrow on the right side at the upper top on the back of the movement. Move the minute hand to the 12 o'clock check to see if the barrow will move back and forth freely if it's stuck it might take a tiny bit of friction with your finger to move it by wiggling the chime barrow, which should free the barrow and let the chimes play again. This will let both the chime and strike weights start dropping down.
Thanks The Bench Jeweler.
I don't know if my question relates to your video, but I have a Jauch wall clock that plays Westminster and Ave Maria de Lordes chimes (it's my second one but with different chime rods). I discovered that even though the Westminster chime played correctly, the Ave Maria chime was off. Then I was told that it could've had a defect when it was first manufactured in 1982 because the pegs are non-adjustable, but I think the melody wheel only needs to be adjusted to the correct position for both melodies to work, even though I haven't had as much experience with repairing clocks. Is it possible to manually turn the melody wheel with the hammers raised using trial and error? Thank you in advance.
If the clock plays two tunes then there will be a lever located somewhere on the front dial moving the music lever changes the music barrow position so that it can play a second tune. If the barrow is stationare and there is no lever on the dial it only plays one tune. Let me know if this helps. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
What is the purpose of the bar/wire that moves around to hid the hammper bars. I would assume to stop them moving in transit or as some sort of volume control.
All 4 of my strike hammers bounce a bit when they strike the hourly chimes. It causes it to sound like a double chime for every strike. I would think bending the hammers back a bit may help but I don't want to mess with them if that's not the fix. Any suggestions?
Use your thumb and first finger thumb in the middle of the hammer rod and the finger on the top of the hammer gently bend back just a tiny bit then pull the hammer back about a 1" and check to see if it's double hitting repeat till it only hits once. Thanks Mike E. The Bench Jeweler
Hey I’m not sure if you’re still doing clock stuff, but my grandfather clock chime melody was off for a while because it confused my grandmother with her phone ring. I have turned it back on with the lever that drops the hammers back into position to ring. The problem I’m having is that the melody is chiming very slow. Could you advise?
Make sure the heavy weight is on the far right side. Of the three weights, one will be the heaviest. If it's running slow either you have a bushing going bad or the movement needs to be cleaned and oiled. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
Good Day I have a Ridgeway model 383 with cable weights. The chime weights are not moving and the clock is not chiming. I believe the clock may of been overwound. is this an easy fix or should I try and find a local clock shop. Thank You Dave
In general, if the weights are wound up it's not overwound. The Clock case model number does not tell me much. It's the movement number on the back side of the clock movement that's needed. If it's a cable wound clock or chain wound clock is needed. Does it have a shut-off lever, or does it play more than one tune if so try putting very gentle pressure on the weight while moving the minute hand to a chime position and see if it starts chiming? I have seen the chime trip lever stuck before and all it may need is a little help. The Bench Jeweler.
Hi. I just picked up an old grandfather clock and it is Chiming short .10.11.12. Eight times, the rest of Chiming are ok. Please tell me what is wrong with it?
It has to do with the rack behind the dial for some reason it's not dropping all the way down at the 10 11 and 12. I think I need to make a quick video on the chime levers. The Bench Jeweler
Fabulous video...... I have a "Kieninger" movement Grandfather clock from the early 1970's when I was in the military. I can NOT get the 2 outer weights to move downward in order to make the clock chime. If I manually touch one of the spinning, I will call them butterfly, on each side that will being to make it chime. It needs to be touch a little to get them started spinning. Can you please help me get my Grandfather clock back into the "beat." Thank you, Al Smekal from Huntington Beach, CA
First off be super careful touching the butterfly wheels the shaft on which they ride can bend really easily!!! You will have to use the odorless mineral spirits you can buy a quart can for a few dollars. Using the wooden cotton tips don't use regular cotton swabs they won't work. Clean easy pivot sinks free from dirt and grease as my video shows. Use high-grade clock oil we have it on our website. and oil the movement as shown in our videos. www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oil-kit
My grandfather clock dings at each hour but no melody like it used to how do I fix this?
Hi Vince, thanks for this video. I’ve just inherited a grandfather clock with Westminster chimes. It runs perfectly, but I believe the hour chime is too high pitched. I was expecting a lower/deeper tone. Can you advice me how to lower it. I have a short video of the chimes that I can send if there is a way to attach it. Thanks for your help, Nancy
There is not much you can do with the high-pitched sound. The grandfather clocks come with pre-tuned chimes and strike rods. It's possible to soften the sound by bending the hammers back from the chime board rods. The Bench Jeweler.
Thankyou so much ....need help please picked up a Howard Miller grandfather clock ....and found 5 chimes on the floor, one from the right all four from the left.what holds these up, set screw? Or? And what order do they go? There's two very close to the same and two longer ones nearly the same and a long one ?? Help!
Not good the chime rods are tuned and inserted into a brass fitting which is threaded or pressed into the chime base most are brass screws and using some thread lock to hold them in place in the chime base I have found no fix other than to replace the chime board with a new one. Mike E The Bench Jeweler.
HI Vince. I have just inherited a Howard Miller (1995 model year) gfc with cable operated pulley weights. The clock works fine but my uncle wound the chime and strike weights up to
high and they will not drop.It will not chime at all.Do you have any suggestions?I have applied pressure to the chime weight while rotating the minute hand around a full cycle but it will not chime even doing that. Thanks
Facing the clock the far right weight runs the chime and the far left weight runs the strike as a rule the chime must release the 4-count cam in order for the strike to operate. Which may be the reason both weights are stuck. Something is jammed on the chime side. if your clock has a lever on the right side it's to change the music tune try moving the switch up and down the chime music barrow may be jammed. First thing to try. Thanks Mike E. The Bench Jeweler.
@@rhjgold Thanks for your suggestion.I have moved the chime lever and the barrow only moves about 1/8th of an inch. The hammers don't look like they are touching the cams.Should the barrow rotate at the 15 and 60 minute points? It is not rotating
I bought a grandfather clock franz hermle 451-050 H off of someone an the chimes arent working! I was wondering if you could help? It actually has a couple parts that was in a bag! I dont know if it is extra or if needed
Most problems deal with the chimes if they are really dirty and have not been cleaned and oiled for a long time this may be the problem.
Love the video and tried what you have suggested, I have a Howard Miller 1181-853B5, and the cam moves freely. When the clock should chime it does"t but I do hear the click but nothing happens any other suggestions. I do find your videos very informative and your down-to-earth way.
Thanks Greg
Look at the barrows to see if the cables are not wound over the top of the barrow wheel. The clock may not chime or strike if it's looped over the top. Most times you can use a flashlight to check the cables on all three barrows. Also, check the chime barrow to make sure it's free and not stuck on one of the hammers. Set to Westminster and check by advancing the minute hand to the closes 1/4 hour. Open the cabinet door and with a cotton glove on place, your hand on the top of the chime weight put a bit of pressure on the weight, and advance the minute hand to the next 1/4 hour to see if it starts chiming. If the cable is looped you may have to repeat it several times. Hope this helps The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.
My older German grandfather clock only strikes up till 5 o'clock now. After that just goes 5 strikes. Is there a way of winding it back or forward to make it correct?
Have watched several videos including cleaning and chime troubleshooting. They are excellent. I’m having. A problem with the hammers getting stuck. I have a Hermle 1161-853BS. It strikes every quarter hour and every time there are 1 or 2 hammers that don’t finish striking. If I just touch the barrel, the hammer releases & strikes. Is there a way to fix this?
I think what's happening is your barrel Is slightly out of time. On the back side of the movement is a drive gear attached to the barrel. Facing the back of the movement it's at the top left. This gear will have a screw to hold the gear in place it needs to be moved forward to the left about 1/10,000 of an inch to drop the hammers. It works best if you run the chime till it stops and the hammer or hammers that have not dropped are when you advance that gear just a tiny tiny bit to let the hammers drop. It's not hard but I warn you it can get you into a lot of trouble if you advance the gear too far. Mike E The Bench Jeweler.
@@rhjgold Worked great. It took me several tries, but everything works great now. Thanks so much.
What if it misses the 12th chime? Just bought a '83 Tempus Fugit Pearl, and it strikes only 11 chimes on the 12th hours. All else is working perfectly well.
My best guess is the rack is not dropping down far enough to count the 12th tooth on the strike the cam pin may be hanging up or an adjustment is needed to let the rack drop all the way down on the center hour wheel. The Bench Jeweler
Like your video. Have a question. Looking at a clock on marketplace, and the person says it chimes I would assume on the hour, but the needles for hours and minutes does not work. Would you think that this would be simple or something major broken ?? Thanks

Is this cable wound clock or chain wound and single chime or muti chime ? The bench jeweler.
It has multiple chimes. And I'm not sure about the other but i think it's chain wound. It's a howard miller 610-520 serial number mf0071470103
dear RHJ GOLD I have a ridgeway with 3 chimes a urgos UW 03012a is stamped on the back plate. my problem is when the trip starts at the quarter half and hour it only goes three chimes and stops . if i give a little coaxing it continues on . but it does it on the next step. help thanks for a great video
I think it won't help to clean and oil as it sounds like you have a bearing out of round. This will cause the chimes to stick as they try to work the action. The fix for this is to re-bush the clock movement. And polishing the pivots. It requires a gifted clock repairman to restore the movement You can figure about 450.00 dollars depending on your location. You can check this problem by removing the chime weight and pushing the chain drive wheel back and forth or the next gear up with your finger and watching for the upper gears to bounce up and down if you see movement then the bushing will need to be replaced. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
I just got a ridgeway grandfather clock, it keeps good time, but the chimes, will not work, when it gets to the hour I see a little flap move,or fall,to start the process, but nothing happens, I have used can air to blow the mechanics, I have not oiled it yet, I have some synthetic oil coming tomorrow today is july25th 2024.
Hello I have a howard miller grandfather clock with movement# 1161 and it only gongs once when it hits the hour so for 8am it only goes once should it gong 8 times ?
Yes, each hour should strike the time. Somewhere the strike levers are not functioning correctly. The Bench Jeweler.
My grandfather clock is Howard MILLER. The hour chime won’t stop and left weight falls quickly to the bottom. What is wrong and what do I need to do? Thanks for your help
I'm only guessing but the far left weight as you face the clock is the striking chime weight and sounds like the ratch gear either has a broken spring or a damaged gear letting the weight fall to the ground. The far-right weight is the chiming weight and the clock is probably out of time so the shutdown pin or warning pin is not latching. Both are beyond owner repair. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
My chimes fell off how do I put them back on .?
So I have a grandfather clock that the middle chain was off. I got it back on and the clock is running bit at a quarter after it doesn’t chime. It has a selected switch and I tried it on all settings and it still won’t chime
You will need to check the music barrow on the top right hand of the movement if your clock has a side panel you can see the barrow using your finger check to see if it is stuck by wiggling it back in forth. The Bench Jeweler.
My clock chimes but the number of Bongs are not in sync with the time. It might bong 7 or 8 times when it is 3:00. Is there a simple fix? Julie
The hour hand is on a slip bushing, move the minute hand to the 12 o'clock listen for how many strikes say 6 strikes if the hour hand is at three move it with your fingers to the 6 o'clock fixed.
Hi RJGold
I bought your clock kit and cleaned and oiled my Jauch model 77 clockworks.
I had to adjust the bridge to align the escapement mechanism. The clock then ran timing wise.
Having issues with the strike mechanism for the westminister tunes, seems the weight does not have the power to
Finish the chiming. Also, now the pendulum will only stay active for 45 minutes. Is it possible the chime function is stopping the pendulum
Functioning? Thanks
The pendulum's timing side runs independently of the chime and strike. My best guess is the pendulum beat is off just enough to cause it to stop after a short time running. Try getting it to have a very even tick-tock. I have a video on just that problem? Your clock movement Jauch is super old and if the chime stops I'm making a guess there is a bad pivot bushing causing the problem. It's not an easy fix. The Bench Jeweler.
can u help me ----- the middle weight fall normally, but the two side weights do not they lag behind and i know it is not right how can i fix this please let me know it is a ridgeway grandfather clock
thanks
The first thing to check is the last time the clock was serviced if ever. Depending on the age it may need cleaning and oiling of the movement, most times this does the trick. The Bench Jeweler.
@@rhjgold i had the clock oiled about six months ago, what else can i check
Well I oiled and tried to fix my pearl grandfather clock. it will not chime. it makes the cluck sound every 15 minutes but on chime.
what is your email address?
my chimes on the quarter hour and 1/2 and hr. but it does it early by about 10 mins. any ideas?
it is a howard miller ridgeway mid 80's i believe.it does chime on a reg basis
The minute hand when removed from the clock on the back side is a nut-like bushing you can use flat pliers and grab the bushing holding the minute hand and turn the hand in the direction you need 10 minutes won't take much and that will put the chimes back on the right time. Mike E The Bench Jeweler.
Hello , my name is mark and I have a ridgway clock its leaveled my clock its on a cement floor and I cant seem to get the pendulum off of dead swing
Very informative. I'm working on a Hermle 1161 853HS 94cm that has an issue with the verge not freely advancing the escape wheel. I installed a new verge but the problem remains. Removing the verge from the movement, the gears move freely as they should. This occurred after the cable for the time function broke causing the weight to drop at a fast rate damaging the bottom of the clock case. I'm suspecting with the gear train working at such a fast rate some damage to the gears may have happened. The movement is completely disassembled for inspection but I'm not seeing anything obviously wrong with the gear teeth, pivots or bushings. While it's apart it would be a good opportunity to clean and oil the mechanism but the issue is with the verge and escape wheel is still of concern. Any thoughts on what may be going on is appreciated! 😊
The 1161 has and auto beat verge, meaning when you let the pendulum swing it sets the beat and at that point the escapement should start advancing.
It would help if you could do a video of the pendulum and escapement moving. Mike E
The left weight does not fall. The clock does not strike. Is there a setting that needs to be adjusted?
The chime and strike are the biggest problems on clocks such as grandfather clocks. The chime at 12 o'clock is support to trip the strike or far left weight. It can be that the strike gears are out of sink you will need to remove the dial and trigger the minute hand to see what cam is not in sink.
that's a good starting place.
Thanks
The Bench Jeweler
When I move the pendulum to start my grandfather clock it only runs for 15 minutes then stops. Is there a easy way to tell whats wrong wit it?
Is this a cable clock or a chain clock if it's a cable clock move the pendulum all the way to one side and let it swing free. This sets the beat and the clock should run without stopping. This won't work on most chain wound clocks. The Bench jeweler
Hi The middle weight on my Herman miller 610-454 is descending faster than the 2 outer weights. I’m just starting your video so I am not certain if you cover this issue. Thanks. Joe (Kansas City)
That's a big problem what is going on is your pallet fork is letting more than on tooth pass by the escapement is skipping my guess several teeth and that's why its dropping faster it should be gaining time also. part 2 if the clock is keeping good time then its the chimes that may not be working on all the 1/4 hours? See if you can zero in on the problem for me more info needed. Thanks The Bench Jeweler... Mike E.
Very helpful! My chimes cam bar is free and oiled and I don't get any chimes or strikes (I do hear a click) on a Ridgeway 1161-853BS, with 3 tunes. I can still adjust to any of 3 tunes or silent. The chime cams never turn at all automatically, but can manually. Do you have any ideas?
Open the side panel on your clock if you have one and take a look at the far right cable drum as you face the clock be the far right cable be sure the line has not tangled on the cable drum. The first place to look. The Bench Jeweler
Second place to check if the timing chime gets off move the minute hand stopping at each 15 min's advance it 24 hours to correct the chime cam. Let me know what you find out. The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.
@@rhjgold Thank you so much. I just moved it with weights off and wondered. I have taken pictures up from bottom and right side and I cant really tell if the cable is overlapped, looks decent/good. I am thinking that I need to pull the whole movement out to inspect this drum better. I can turn the chime cam bar by hand and when the tune is over, the strike gongs take over automatically (and lower the left weight to do it). The right weight has not dropped from the top. Is there a way to just pull the right cable drum, or something else to do besides pulling the whole movement out? I do have removable glass side panels. The wound cable on the drums are covered with clear hard plastic . Thanks again!
Ken sorry the last email went to trash? I didn't see your question till now. using a glove with the front cabinet door open you can put light pressure on the chime weight then advance the minute hand to the quarter hour and see if the chimes work while applying a tiny bit of pressure on the top of the chime weight. Two problems may be causing the problems one it needs oiling or two there is a bushing or two that are worn and causing the problem.
@@rhjgold I am honored with your reply! I pulled down on the 10 pound chime weight and rotated the minutes hand and nothing.
Later, the second hand stopped and then the pendulum stopped, with center weight half way down. I think that I am going to carefully watch your cleaning videos and "clean my clock". I am a bit concerned about synchronizing, so may not completely tear down.
How do you tell if a bushing is worn? Just by wobble angle after separating the plates? Thank you!
Hi my neighbor has a ridgeway grandfather clock and my fiancé, unknowingly, turned the minute hand around without stopping at the quarter hours. Now the clock doesn’t chime at all. Any suggestions? I’d sure like to fix it so he can stop being sick about it 👍
Most clocks have an auto corrector so if he skipped a chime start by moving it to the next 1/4 hour chime if not chime goes to the next etc it should start chimes after moving it around a few times stopping at each 1/4 chime. The Bench Jeweler.
Hi there! I recently got my hands on a Grandfather clock, made in 1985. It keeps time quite well, but the chime does not work. Neither the strike or the tune chime will trigger. My though was, that it needs oiling but I heard from others that I should use Graphite instead of oil. Just curious your thoughts on that? Also, do you think a clock can be oiled while its still in place or does it need to have the movement removed to do so?
Don't use graphite you need to use clock oil. For some clocks, you can remove the dial and the back of the case can be opened this type of clock can be cleaned and oiled without taking the movement out. If you can't get to the front of the movement then it needs to be removed from the case. The Bench Jeweler.
Hello Sir, One of my old clocks is a N. Pomeray from 1859. I inherited it from a family member and had to take it apart and clean it, oil it and get it in beat.It worked perfectly. Unfortunatly it took a digger and now that I have it all fixed and set again it strikes way to quickly. It strikes at the correct time just very fast compaired to how it used to. Ive searched what may cause this to no avail. please help.
Sounds like you have the weights in the wrong location
Hi RHJ Gold- is there a specific brand or type of oil to use?
I just got my grandfathers grandfathers clock. The time works well but the chimes and moon phase do not work. Trying to get it running. Appreciate your help.
There are 3 weights. The one in middle is for the time and works. But the far left and right ones don’t move.
We use and sell Red Dragon Clock Oil. Made for oiling all mechanical clocks. Do not use spray oils, 3 and 1 oils, or sewing machine oils they may cause damage to your clock. www.mybenchjeweler.com/product/red-dragon-clock-oils Thanks The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
Like a dummy I left the key in the whining spot for a day or 2 and now it won't chime can you help me please
My wife just inherited her father’s 1977 Howard Miller clock. The chime and hour announcement constantly sound. It was stored with the two outer weights at the top and in silenced mode.
The clock timing is excellent but I’d love to hear the chimes.
Any suggestions before I try to inspect the clocks workings?
The 4/4 chime cam may be out of time causing the cam lever to keep running and not shut down that is if I understand what your telling me. How the cam's work is complex, not an easy fix. The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.
Thank you for your response. As it is my wife’s inheritance, and she likes it as is, we will enjoy it without the chimes. 😎
I have a grandfather clock that stopped chiming, what can I do?
First, watch my videos on clock cleaning and oiling then we can start looking for the problem. Mike E The Bench Jeweler
my /Ridgeway continually chimes- would appreciate your help
There's not much to go on, but the best guess is that the chime cam lever that drops down and triggers the warning pin to stop the chime is sticking and may not be dropping all the way down. The chime lever cam when facing the front of the clock is on the right side at the top under the dial can't see it with the dial on. The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.

My hands were ran forward without letting it chime. Now no chiming at all. 😢
Hi! I appreciate your cleaning video it really helped me, but I have a problem that my 1/4 chime is working and but my hour chime only works is I manually pull the lever that releases the chime. I Also can't figure out how to get the movement off the time faceplate either, it's on there good with rods and a pice of metal wrapped around. My movement is a hermle 76 grandfather clock .I also noticed it doesn't have a silent bar I wonder if that's the cause
Hermle movements on the back of the clock movement should but a stamped number like 451-053 Look on the movement and see if there is a number like that. What were looking for is a clear understanding when you advance the minute hand from 12 to first 1/4 hour does it chime, 1/2 hour does it chime, 3/4 hour and back to 12 are all or some chiming correctly? The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
@@rhjgold my exact model is a hermle 451-050 .it chimes for each quarter hour except for the hour when even the song doesn't come, I finally got the dial off and observed, and it looks like the release lever isn't being pushed up far enough from the chime cam.
My small grandfather clock has been wound to tight it has three areas for the key. The number is 341-02 145CM and it was made in west Germany/emperor clock. I would like to have it working again. 4:03
I have a Sligh grandfather clock with a solid back so access is challenging. Do I need to do everything through the small side access doors?
It can be done but its much better to remove the front clock frame undoing the dial and letting you get a closer look.
@@rhjgold I did find another persons video showing how to remove a mechanism from the front. I got to the point of unlatching the four posts that hold the clock face to the mechanism but can't get the clock face out of the front as it is behind wooden decorative plate that doesn't appear to be removable. If I remove the four bolts holding the mechanism to the base it looks like I could maneuver the clock works out the upper side window panel but tricky with chimes and weight cables. Am I missing something with front access?
@@rhjgold I was able to get the wooden facing off by removing the glass door and its hinges. Now I am having trouble removing the clock face as it has two additional dials (one for type of ringing...all time, day only, silent; and the other for the three chime types and silent). The dials are similar to the second hand but in the back they are attached to levers on the mechanism. I tried to pry off the dials to no avail. I am looking at the lever system but don't see a simple detachment. Am afraid of bending/breaking the mechanisms... should I pry on the hands more?
@@gregmandt5728 I don't know without seeing the front of the clock but once the dial is removed the clock should come out the front. You have to be really careful not to bend or put pressure on the dial most have numbers that are glued and they can break off! There should be two screws directly on the bottom of the clock movement which will let the movement become free and you could move it out the side but the chimes will be in the way and you will have to slide it around the chimes and the hammers on the movement will catch the chimes if not careful. Also, the chime rods are not very strong don't bend them or they could break off! Mike E

Our chime was out of sync. We moved the hour hand to match the number of chimes and it worked after that. But my husband then moved the hour hand again one hour ahead and now we get no chimes at all.
1/4 chime at a time move the minute hand all the way around to 12 stop at each 1/4 to see if it beggines to chime. do this and let me know what happens

I recently watched your videos on removing a grandfather clock movement and cleaning and oiling. I purchased your kit and removed my clock movement. I cleaned and oiled it and installed it back into it's place. It seems to be working well but I can't get the chime correct. It will not chime or strike right. It will not chime the quarter, half or three quarter time. It will chime on the hour and strike the hour and sometimes chime the quarter hour chime on the hour but doesn't strike! Help! It runs a little slow and the weights do not fall equally. The center weight falls faster than the right and left. My weights are marked, so I know they are in the correct position. My clock was purchased in Dec. 1987. It is a Seth Thomas three chime. The movement is a German A451-002. I stopped the movement several years ago in order to preserve it until I could find someone to clean and oil it. I think at the time it was around 29 years old. I am wondering if this is a hopeless case. Update! I have been listening carefully to my clock and have figured out what is happening. It is playing the full chime on the hour and striking the hour. It is going forward one full hour and chiming the quarter hour chime on the next hour but not striking the hour. it is repeating this process with going forward one hour and chiming the half hour chime but again not striking the hour. From there it is again going forward another hour and playing the three quarter chime but not striking the hour. It goes forward another hour and plays the full chime and strikes the hour. It is correct on the hour strike but just a few minutes slow. Make sense?
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what's going on. So you need to do a couple of things for me. One to speed up the clock there is a screw on the bottom of the pendulum screwing the pendulum up will speed the clock up. On most of the pendulum's turning the bottom screw to the right will speed up just turn the screw a half turn at a time then observe if the time speeds up.
Chimes, a 451 movement sounds like its a Hermle German movement however that type of movement only plays the Westminster Chime so can you take a picture of the back side of the movement for me and also what chime tunes does it play Westminster, St Michaels, and the Whittington would be the three common chime tunes if it has three different chimes it plays. On the front of the dial should be a lever that changes the chime tunes. Let me know. The Bench Jeweler. Mike E.
@@rhjgold I am trying to figure out how to send the pictures I have on my phone. My clock has three chimes and silent. It chimes whichever chime I have it set on. I have turned the screw on the bottom of the pendulum many times and it remains slow. It is hard to turn, so I am thinking of removing the pendulum and cleaning it. I will take a picture of the chime side with my phone and try to figure out how to send them to you. At least I know what time it is every 4 hours since that is when the clock chimes and strikes! Any help will be much appreciated by this 77 year old lady!
@@LKH675 Don't do any more cleaning the pendulum won't fix anything. Not sure what to tell you at this point
Okay, I have sent the photos to your gmail address.
Move the minute hand to 12 wait till the chime is done then move the tune lever on the front of the dial up and down slowly making sure the barrow on the back side is moving back and forth freely then set the lever to Westminster try advancing the minute had to the 1/4 hour see if the chime plays hammers should fall in order 1234. if no chime move the the 1/2 hour wait for the chime if it plays and advance to the 3/4 hour same and the 12 oclock chime what were trying to do is to get the chimes in sink. Most clock have a auto corrector and will correct the chimes when out of sink. That's why you do this two times as it taked 48 hour to correct itself. Try this be sure to move the hand clock wise and slow to give it time to play the chime before moving to the next 1/4 hour.

I have a Herman Miller grandfather clock! It chimes except the hr chime doesn’t work at all! Ex 5 o clock 6 o clock etc!
Does it strike on the hour or does not chime or strike on the hour?
@@rhjgold It works now! Thanks!
Most of the time if you advance the minute hand and trip one of the 1/4 hour chimes without letting it chime it will take 12 to 24 hours for the chime to trip correctly most cocks have an auto-correct for chime and strike. The Bench Jeweler

My clock stopped chiming is there a shut off on a tempos fugit
If there is a lever protruding through the front of the dial, that would be either a shutoff or a music tune changer
Our grandfather clock does not chime. My son is able to get it to chime with manipulation in the clock but doesn't do it automatically on the hour.
Do you have the movement number from the back of the clock movement? Most have a movement number such as a hermle 451 etc. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
what the bottom, very bottom number means, just below the pendulum length?
The top number is the pendulum's length to the bottom of the nut. the button number is the year it was manufactured.
@@rhjgold thx for answer, I have 1 with no 85/70.77, and the other 1 is 94/66.00 as for me, it is a strange way of showing the year of production

We have a 1980 Howard Miller grandfather clock. For the past month the minute hand will not go past the numeral 2 and also numeral 8....so aggravating. This has happened in the past and we just moved the minute hand backwards a tiny bit, and then it would go forward correctly and not happen again for a few years....and the "fix" always worked. Just recently tho we do the same, but it will stop later when it gets to numeral 8 or again to numeral 2 spot. We had it cleaned ,etc maybe 5 yrs ago. Anyone had this happen? It is in a very prominent/convenient spot and do depend on it for a quick glance of time all during the day...did not realize how often I glance at it for the time!!
In the movement on the chime side, I'm guessing the warring pin is sticking stopping the minute hand, not doing it all the time is a clue? There is no easy fix that I can help you with. The bench jeweler
@@rhjgold Thank you for the reply. The guy who cleaned it for me had to work on it some several years ago, because it fell ...on me!! Has worked perfectly since, except for a few times it did this and just pushing the minute hand backwards a little and then would go forward without feeling like it locked up and it would work again .Not now tho, so I will call him. Was hoping a simple fix, but we just cannot get it going. I do love this clock so got to be fixed!! I was 30 when i got it...now 72 !!!

I'm mixed up on the right weight if you hook the weight up does the chime go constantly? Facing the clock the far left weight is the strike which goes off only on the hour. The middle weight is the time which when the pendulum runs move the minute and hour hand. the Far right weight is the chime and should have the heaviest weight on it. Make sure the clock is leverl side to side and front to back as close as you can. With weight on you many need some help with this start the pendulum listen to the sould of the clock it should have a very even tick-tock sound if it has a tick-cluk sound and quites running after a few minutes the clock is out of beat and won't run. You will have to set the beat if this is the problem. The Bench Jeweler Mike E.
When i hook up all the weights, the chime are going constantly, but when I take out the heaviest weight that's on the right , the chimes stops and the clock is at a stand still.

If this a grandfather clock all you need to do is move the minute hand through the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and on the hour count the strikes say 3 o'clock you can move the hour hand to three it's on a friction busing and can be moved to what every time you need. The Bench Jeweler
How do you adjust the speed on a mantel clock,
I need to slow the clock down.
It is gaining about Two minutes an hour.
That's Quite a bit for a mantel clock to gain. If it's a weigh clock open the back door and lower the weight down I would start with three, or for turns, and see how much it gains in 24 hours. repeat if necessary. I need to know if your clock has a pendulum and wight. The Bench Jeweler.
If your mantel clock has a pendulum and weight on the bottom of the weight there is a little nut or screw bob letting the weight move up or down. moving the weight down slows the clock. On some older mantel clocks at the top of the dial is a tiny hole and arrows using your clock key which should have a bottom for winding the clock and on the top, a small stem that lets you insert it in the top of the dial then turn either right or left will speed up or slow down the clock. The Bench Jeweler.
I don't own one of those clock but one is attached to my line .This is interfering with the function of my usuage which is happening recently.l also having problems with sending and receiving calls or chat. I need someone to investigate it
There should be a dial on the pendulum to screw something out (longer) or in (shorter)
