- We are joined by multi-instrumentalist Richie Castellano for a Yesshift interview! Richie has been a member of Blue Öyster Cult for 20 years, and for the past year he's also been playing bass on Yes classics live along with other members of The Band Geeks as they tour with original Yes vocalist Jon Anderson! Jon and the Band Geeks are currently touring the US and have worked on a studio album titled TRUE. It comes out August 23rd, and you can pre-order here: talkshop.live/... And see any upcoming tour dates here: richiecastella...
And here's where you can find the full versions of the videos we featured.

Wonderful interview! I’m so happy Jon found The Band Geeks.
Yes it's been a fruitful collaboration between them!
A pure alchemy of young and old. So great. Saw them in Rochester. Otherworldly experience!
I'm always speechless. Bravo!!! Richie
1971 to 1979 Yes were the best.
The middle of this enjoyable interview is fantastic because Richie describes Jon’s creative working process for how the songs of their new album came to be, especially that of Counties and Countries. Good job Yesshift!
Thanks Tracy! And yes, we got good nuggets about the collaborative process there!

Total respect for Richie. He is a musical genius.
Was fun learning about the process!
Come to ENGLAND please!!!
You guys are great interviewers. You really let the guest fully go out on their story path, interjecting only occasionaly and tastefully. Richie was great here!
Awesome interview! Lookin forward to the new album and tour!
August cannot come sooner for us!
Richie is an incredible interview. Funny enough, I was 15 years old the first time I saw Yes on the Big Generator. Magic age for seeing the best band ever.
Seems more and more like around age 15 is the average age for when fans attend their first Yes concert! lol
You youngsters! My first Yes concert was November 1973 on the UK Tales tour! Saw five shows on the 1975 Relayer tour.
You lucky geezer... the first one was in 1977. After that - loads & loads of shows
If I could go back and time and see a Yes tour, Tales Tour would be the one!
-S
@@Yesshift I'd only heard part of Revealing Science, on a radio programme, at that point. The album wasn't out for another couple of weeks, so that concert, not only my first Yes concert, but also my first rock concert (I was 14), was my first hearing of all of Tales. It was also probably the loudest anything I'd ever heard up to that point!
Fantastic interview ! What a great story of a bunch of musicians who love Yes and now get to be in a band with Jon. So happy for Richie and Jon working and writing music together. This story should be made into a movie!
Who would play whom, I wonder 🤔
Great interview, I have a ton of respect for Richie and The Band Geeks, I went to the Rochester, NY gig and was so blown away, that I bought tickets for Hammondsport NY that night lol, this band is the real deal! And the way Jon is singing is unreal! Here’s a video that I shot from Rochester featuring Richie:

Wonderful interview and insights, thanks so much!
Thanks for tuning in!
Get a lighter stylus if you try playing on a Victrola....circa 1964, my sisters and I listened to "A Hard Day's Night", United Artists release on our family Victrola because we weren't allowed to use the families console player upstairs, only Dad operated that. After many listens to both sides, if you then played the LP on the upstairs system you could hear the opposite side playing backwards!..and that was the valuable pressing with "I Cry Instead misprint ...Thx Richie & Band Geeks for all the great music!
The Main thing that I get from listening to Rich is, I can hear and feel the energy and enthusiasm in this band and it matches what I always felt as a YES fan.
Yeah and the energy in how he talks about the music!
His family is so musical his fish blow bubbles in tune in their tank. The Collingswood show last year on the 29th was fantastic.
Shine On sounds a bit like something from Talk, production-wise.
Dad seems to agree!

I saw the Topographic Oceans concert in Birmingham UK when I was 13, it is still the best gig out of hundreds I have seen. Another favourite was the ABWH tour which was incredible.
Would love to go back in time and see that tour!

It's a shame nobody thought to put CDs in 12" gatefold sleeves, or booklets, so the artwork, details, etc. could be retained as with the vinyl before.
I often listen to the yes shift podcast via download from Apple Podcasts. I really enjoyed this episode. Richie does a great interview with y’all. Really enjoyed it.
That was fantastic!! Thanks guys...loved it!! Looking forward to the album...cheers! T
Can you please come to south Florida, pleaseeeee, pleaseeeee 😃🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I’m really enjoying the new Jon Anderson/ Band Geeks album. I really enjoyed this interview as well (I often listen via Apple podcasts)
Any thoughts or plans of playing outside the US?
My first Yes show was '79 as well, Tormato Tour - 13 years old. Changed my life! Great interview, cheers.
I saw Jon said he would only do this one album with Band Geeks. Another interview on RUclips.
Saw the geeks on line a few years ago. Was lucky to see them with Jon last year in St Charles IL. I was hooked, GREAT musicians!! I'm going to seee them again in August in Denver. If you have a chance to see them DO IT. I just saw the Stones in Chicago and as good as that show was, I'm REALLY looking forward to catching them in Denver.
Great interview! I'm glad you asked if Richie's uncle is still around and what he thinks of Richie playing with Jon Anderson.
I saw Jon & the Band Geeks in Chicago last week, and the show was wonderful. The mix could have been better (there was way too much low end, and keys were too quiet in the middle of Awaken), but the performance was excellent. I especially loved Richie's bass solo on Heart of the Sunrise. (I was a little disappointed not to hear The Calling, but hopefully they'll continue playing it at other shows.) I'm looking forward to the new album!
This was actually my second time seeing Jon & the Band Geeks -- I saw them last year as well. But I viewed this year's concert very differently from last year's. At last year's show, I felt like I was lucky to have one more chance to experience Jon singing Yes music with a great band -- perhaps the last chance that I would ever have, and one more than I expected. At this year's show, I felt like this is an ongoing thing, with a new album and possibly more tour dates next year -- more of a beginning than an end.
Come to ENGLAND please!!!
Big Generator '87 Tour on the floor was not a terrible 1st time to see them. See you in TO in Aug!
Love Homeworld!!!! My oldest son used to play the game as a child and he loves Yes to this day!
"Homeworld" would be a great song to dig up again for the live setting!
I've had "The Ladder" on CD since the year it was released, and I've always liked that album. But I had no idea that "Homeworld" was associated with a video game!
Brilliant interview , loved it
Homeworld is an outrageous track to have been written in a day!! 👌🏆
The Ladder is one of the best Yes "epics."
I hope that they will play "Homeworld"
Great interview about the process of writing ! I just have a problem, about the cover of the single, I think it's really bad. I hope the album cover will be better. It's hard for me to buy an album with a bad cover
Great interview, Richie is the best!
What a friken love fest! So thankful for Yesshift!
It was so fun geeking out about the music!
@@Yesshift YES, very! Cheers!
Could you Message me for an old YES Story (NO I,m not crazy. In fact, I'm a Committee chair in one organization. I'm also advisor to two Free Produce Ministries.
All the older kids liked me. I rode handlebars by 7.
One Saturday morning, they rode up "Bert! You GOTTA ride bars, Right now!
Thanks for answering the question Ritchie! I’m fucking excited for the new tunes.
Great interview! I laughed a lot too lol!! Looking forward to the next Richie interview! Thanks so, so much Richie, Steven and Dan!
Great interview. Thanks!
Thanks for tuning in!
Totally agree about the Tormato tour. Roundabout was off the scale. I've seen them many, many times but that was a special gig.
❤👏👏👏👏👏👏what a great interview you guys always bring a smile and laughter to my day, bless you all. Thank you.
Awesome conversation with great insights! Thanks to you all🙏🏻🎶
Hi friends, Great Talent 🎸 Richie, 👏👏👍👌have a great day 👋
Great interview, looking forward to seeing Jon & the Band Geeks in flyover country USA. Ha
Thank you Richie ...You are amazing!!!!!!
The fun these guys are having is tangible! Do not miss!! Ty Steven, Dan and Ritchie. Have a great rest of the tour!
I agree with Richie that Talk is a great Yes record. While it is not my favorite of all time, I would say it is one of my top 10 favorites. There is a great video of Trevor Rabin talking with MOTU engineers and his remembering the use of MOTU Performer which is the system that they used to record Talk. Trevor still uses MOTO Digital Performer to this day in all of his musical productions. Talk about being loyal to a particular platform. I really enjoyed watching the videos of he and his Uncle Phil making modifications to various guitars over the years, especially the video of the green Rickenbacker bass guitar that Richie is using on the Jon Anderson tours.
Talk is my fav of the Rabin era. It's been great seeing it get a lot of love lately!

Thanks big time. Learn something new every day and this truly satisfied my curiosity about the new Yes. Quickly, the thing I love about Yes, is that every day or other day, there is another song I get hooked on. Currently, it’s “To Be Over” off the Relayer album. Watch the live version. Thx!!!
And now it’s time to check out “Talk”. Thx
"To Be Over" is an incredible journey!
@35:52 is such a triumphant sounding moment! Richie Castellano and the Band Geeks are (as I've said on so many of these comments) the kids I wish I'd gone to high school with... and now they are living a dream/my dream... THE dream! Amazingly cool!
I remember back in high school (2009-2013 for me) there weren't many friends into this sort of music. Have a great friend who loves music I still keep in touch with. Musical bonds are incredible!
-S
@@Yesshift many??? I had zero friends that like Prog! I was very much in the period of time when NWBHM was giving way to hair metal… I couldn’t convince anyone that a song like Heart of the Sunrise was waaaaaay heavier than most of that ‘modern’ music! (Though I do still wish that Metallica would do a cover of South Side of the Sky! Don’t laugh! It’s in their wheelhouse musically and probably the most accessible … James H would even do a great job on the vocals…)
What’s up with the 15 year old thing, I saw YES in Baton Rouge the day before my 15th birthday on December 2nd, 1974, there should be a poll, lol. Thanks you guy this was a great interview & I can’t wait to see JA & The Band Geeks in Peachtree City, Ga. on July 27th!!!
Wow I guess it's a trend!
