  • Michael shares a less known way to use PEE as fertilizer on plants! It's a mulch urinal. Pee + Mulch = match made in heaven.
Let us know in the comments if you have any questions about this method. Would love to hear your thoughts! Cheers ;)

One of the Danish brewers supplies large straw bales to festivals for urinals. They then truck them out to the same fields where the barley was grown. I think the slogan was, "help us make more beer with the beer you drank"...

thats so hard to say though, it depends on time of urine, and your diet. first pee of the morning from a carnivore is very different from last pee from a fruitarian, or even the pee from an alcoholic.

This is not what makes it to the garden though. When you pee on carbon sources much of the nitrogen is used by bacteria to breakdown the carbon.

I collected my pee a few times and poured onto the leaves. As they settled, I kept adding more leaves and grass with occasional additions of pee. It has turned into beautiful rich compost, full of worms. This really works well.

I am composting urine into some free sawdust with oyster shell lime or dolomitic lime and azomite. Works awesome. I was composting into contractor black plastic bags and I have a compost tumbler. I did have trouble with one bag getting rain in it. Wish I had more compost tumblers. I may have to try something like this. I also straight up throw urine on my regular compost pile and it does really accelerate composting. Some lime is always good too, for minerals and ph.

Good job mate, great vid & tips, and an innovative idea for maybe reducing paddock stumps too.
I have recently started a composting heap on 40 acres so I have heaps of long grass & weeds I can slash & make a huge haystack with it. I just keep burying all our food scraps, fish carcasses, cow, horse & chicken poop, a bit of lime and a heap of pee, a little fertiliser and keep adding trailer loads of grass & weed cuttings, seaweed extract, worm castings, leaves, paper, pine needles, etc.
I have a backhoe if I need to give it a stir up occasionally & plan to turn some of my cleared wattle heaps into biochar to also add some extra structure, rather than just letting the heaps burn to total ash, I will irrigate them out when they are essentially coals to save the biochar, it’s all about microbial activity at the end of the day isn’t it.
I want to improve my soil structure around my fruit trees and a new veg garden, so I need to make a fair bit over the next year or so. TFS.

I used to get a small bucket, maybe 4 litre, and half fill with sawdust. Pee in it for about a week or nearly full, then transfer it to the compost heap as the "green nitrogen" component (although the sawdust was obviously "brown', but I reckon the urine outweighed it). I can't get sawdust near me anymore so I started using chaff instead. Works fine.

One thong i dont see anybody doing are tropical lumber trees, they are very scarce now in the wild and with some patience can give a good 'retirement'..i know nobody in this stuff retires.
Heres a few..Mohogany, Spanish Ceder, the Rose wood family (Siamese, Burmese ).
.In hawaii.,a sandle wood , monkey pod, these two are very expensive amd rare.
Many more but those are some of the rarest, hence more expensive..and they could use some help.

I had one self seeded tomato growing this year, probably when I was outside and a seed shot out when I was eating a tomato.
I planted it in a sunny position and decided to mix my urine with water and apply to the soil. I watered it twice a week and was surprised how many tomatoes I got, 40. Two looked a bit scarred on their skins so I rejected those, so 38 tomatoes.
I've grown them before from bought seed but never had 40 tomatoes on one plant. My greenhouse is tiny so maximum height is 5'. However this was outside and I let it grow to 6' but our summers are not noted for being hot.
Do commercial growers get more productive plants than amateur gardeners?
I'm going to keep some seeds from these to see how well they do next year.

Nice idea! I'm interested in trying this with wood chips. Maybe make it wider but like a Johnson-Su style reactor with air in the middle? Definitely something I'm interested in exploring further. (Wouldn't call it revolutionary though, that word gets thrown around way to easily.)
In general, I'm more interested in using urine to create compost than using it directly as fertilizer. Although "natural", urine is still a quick-release chemical fertilizer that could cause imbalances in the soil food web.
I've also looked into extracting struvite from urine, which becomes a slow-release fertilizer powder. But even that is something one should use with care. And much more difficult to do.

I used to pee in a jug, and then pour it right on the garden beds, but found it very inefficient. I started just pouring my pee jug right on to the compost pile like you showed. Been doing it for years and can't find a reason to stop!

The presence of the worms shows that the urine compost isn't too "hot" to use. I have successfully used urine as fertilizer by diluting it with water. I'm currently using urine on a 4 cubic yard pile of fresh woodchips. My expectation is that the chips that absorb some of the urine will break down faster as it is spread as mulch for food trees.

    • @OffGridHawaii
      @OffGridHawaii  7 месяцев назад +2

It depends how broken down you want it. I usually fill it to the top keeping the mulch loose and fluffy and in about 2-3 months it will reduce to half the size. This may vary depending on the type of mulch you are using.
