No need for personal attacks. Gavin Newsom has done a LOT to make a difference in the homeless population. It was around 180k back in 2005 and currently back down to around 180k. California has spent 57 billion dollars to find a permanent solution for the homeless and over the last 3 years a LOT of homes were built and job opportunities available ... you should see a lot of changes as soon as Newsom wins the lawsuit against the republicans to move the homeless to quarters
Even though Barbara Lee represents my district and I generally approve of her, Katie Porter has consistently proven she cares about fighting against corruption that's rampant in our system of government. Katie Porter has my vote!
How can you tell all she did was give a speech, over and over, you do understand she only one person how much can she really do. I prefer Barbara to Porter, but I will be voting for Porter because Schiff is disturbingly winning in Real Clear Politics series of polls and it's because he is establishment and has received, by far, the most dark money. Schiff must not be allowed to hold the 1 of 2 scarce Senate seats representing California. Since Barbara simply doesn't have as much popularity, and I do still like Porter, I am going to vote for Porter, because she has a better chance of beating Schiff. You can hear Schiff waffle on supporting Medicare for All when using words like "choice" and "access" which are always code for keeping private health insurance and providers in the equation. His campaign donations also demonstrate that he will not fight for M4A. He also refused to even acknowledge the suffering of Palestinians or ongoing war crimes committed against them. He's not going to be a bold or progressive leader. He is bought and paid for.

The homeless problem isn't going to be solved with more affordable housing alone. If people don't have jobs, then they can't afford the most affordable housing. They can't afford groceries because of the rising prices. Stores have to charge more because of those rising prices. Mom and pop stores have to close because they can't pay more for their inventory and pay the rising wages for their employees. It's not just one issue, but many intertwining issues at once.
But unemployment is at the lowest it’s been in more than 50 years, and housing was more affordable during many of those years, so employment isn’t the issue. It’s wages as well as cost of housing which is a supply and demand issue, as well as the type of housing being built coupled with the high cost of building housing in CA
The paradox is that without housing, it is almost impossible to find, let alone keep, a job. The answer can only be a policy of subsidies to house the poorest and tax exemption on rents and mortgages for others. At the same time, real estate speculation must be discouraged by heavily taxing empty buildings. To avoid being punitive for investors who choose real estate, we must introduce tax reductions for those who have the highest housing occupancy rate and charge the lowest rents.
In the case of the USA, it is also necessary to contrast the first reason for loss of housing: bankruptcies due to the costs of medical care through a public option and/or a general mandate.
California has a long history of bad zoning laws and NIMBYism. No candidate has touched on those two issues so they really need to prep for that again in the next debate

Congresswoman Lee is better on Israel-Palestine. Other than that, Katie is the clear winner. She was also one of two candidates on that stage who actually seemed articulate (the other being round-faced Adam).

They say it all the time...granted they want you to think only the "wealthy" will pay more, but trickle down economics is a fact of life, when you raise taxes on the "wealthy" the cost trickles down to everyone else in higher prices. You can't raise taxes on the highest earners and not pass it down without price controls. You may argue we need price controls, but then that opens up an entirely new group of problems.

If I were the host or organizer of this debate, I would be absolutely ashamed. After the debate, I'd go home that night and cry myself to sleep for creating and participating in something so meaningless and trite. The next day, I'd resign from my job and lambast my corporate overlords for making me complicit in such a mind-numbing waste of time. Then I'd take the next week to reasses all my life choices and chart a new path, hoping to salvage some sense of purpose for my life. But that's just me.

@BettyBlack99 My issue isn't so much with Garvey or ideology. I can see that the other candidates were all ragging on him and how some of the moments might seem unfair for Garvey. My issue is that he didn't come prepared with anything of substance. He was so lost. He kept reading off his piece of paper. I don't know if you know but both parties recruit candidates to run for offices. Regardless if whether they think their candidate can win or not they have to trot someone out there. Ages ago both parties courted Vin Scully to run for California Governor. It's a both sides thing. To me it seems really clear that Steve Garvey was recruited to run based on his name recognition and not much else. I think Garvey had first crack at the questions for the most part, yet he couldn't really answer them. It's fair to ask him what is he stands for because it's not clear what he's for or what he would want to do as Senator. It was really hard to watch him because he couldn't answer anything. It was really unsettling. It felt like elder abuse. Steve Garvey is a Dodger legend I'm a Dodger fan and it was a bad scene to see someone like that just be embarrassed. I'm dissatisfied and disturbed by the quality of candidates Republicans trot out. They aren't taking it seriously. Steve Garvey, Tommy Tuberville, Herschel Walker aren't candidates that anyone deserves to have. If you're a republican or Conservative, They need to do better by you. I understand you might say hey well look at these Democrats they are the devil and want to push grandmother's down stairs or what have you, but come on. Steve Garvey shouldn't be up there. If someone can't answer what they are for and give you a clear answer on what they can do for you, then they have no business asking for your vote. That goes for both sides.

I'm disappointed that all the candidates failed to address drug addiction as a major contributing factor to the homelessness problem in our cities. When you walk through the streets of San Francisco or LA, you see people consumed by drug addiction and mental illness. Women and children are major victims of homelessness, but you don't see them in large numbers on street corners because they use services such as shelters and assistance programs. The problem on the streets are drug addicted individuals who refuse treatment, and we allow them to make that choice as we watch them overdose daily on our sidewalks and in front of our homes. California needs more affordable housing for low and middle income earners who are struggling to afford housing in the state, but let's not kid ourselves that the homelessness problem is solely about housing.
Just seeing those images and hearing these tragedies hurts my soul. I'm really curious. As a resident, how do you think these problems should be approached?
@@joelsommers The state needs to mandate treatment. Camping on sidewalks and open air drug use cannot be tolerated. People don't want to criminalize drug use because people need rehab, but if it is not criminalized the state can't mandate anything. There should be due process for people who are arrested, and for non-violent drug-related offenses people should be given the option to participate in rehab instead of prison time. Then there needs to be transitional housing with ongoing outpatient rehab services to help people get back on their feet and stay housed. My ideas are not very popular here though because of people's ideas about policing and the "defund police" movement. I just don't think we should throw away the system because of problems within it. Fix the problems, and make it better.

I really like that she solely stood up against the war in Iraq and she immediately called for a ceasefire after 10/7. Two of the biggest issues for me are fighting corruption and narrowing the wealth gap and for that I think Porter comes out on top all day. She’s super sharp and holds people accountable like no other. She also doesn’t take any PAC money which is HUGE.
@@michaeldandrea540it seems to me like you’re saying they’d only be worthy of a vote if major metropolitan areas they represent were cured of high crime, mental issues, drug addiction, and homelessness as if that’s not something all cities have always struggled with by nature. Maybe that’s not what you’re saying, but what I’m saying is these problems are not unique to California. I’d trust a progressive democrat to tackle these issues anytime over a Republican for so many reasons, but mainly because they aren’t issues that are going to be solved overnight. It takes time, money, and a progressive who actually cares rather than someone who uses the issues as a political prop (e.g. Garvey’s grandstanding @ 45:52). I think Porter or Lee would be MILES above Feinstein in terms of tackling the things you mentioned. Let’s be honest, it’s a low bar lol

Interesting talk of free college education. The University of California system was free originally and was considered a monumental achievement. Fees were added and then Ronald Reagan as Governor cut funding and forced substantial hikes. Of course that system is a contributor to the economic power of the Golden State. Money well invested.
