  • Manuel Neuer in desperate time tried to shoot the goal to make draw with South Korea.
Unfortunetely for Germany they lost a ball, and South Korea shoot second goal, so Germany team will go to home... :O shock! Can you imagine? :-)

For those of you who don't understand what Neuer was thinking, he actually made the right decision under the circumstances. When teams are losing and it doesn't matter by how much, it's common for them to send up the goalkeeper as an extra attacking player in an "Everything to gain and nothing to lose" situation.
Granted, it's much more rare in group stage games since goal differential actually matters there, but since this was the last group stage game, it didn't matter if Germany lost by 1 goal, 5 goals, or any other amount. If they lost at all, they were guaranteed to get knocked out. Neuer knew they had to at least draw to have any hope of getting into the last 16, so he moved off the line.
Usually this tactic doesn't work for two reasons:
    1. Goalkeepers usually become goalkeepers because they don't perform well as outfield players. Neuer is a special case because he started his career as a midfielder before moving into the goalkeeper position, but it isn't hard to imagine that he's less effective as an outfield player than as a shot stopper.
    2. Having one extra man isn't decisive enough to seal a significant advantage. Just look at all the teams that won or at least drew while having 10 players, often because someone from their side got sent off.
But once again, when you have to score to avoid a certain knockout, it's a strategy worth trying. So no, it didn't backfire. He lost the ball and South Korea scored again, but that second goal really didn't matter to them as they would've been eliminated anyway.

Good move. Surprised more teams don't do this. If you're behind and need to score, sometimes it's best to pull the goalie for the extra attacker. Most of the time it doesn't work but in the final few minutes it's worth the risk. Same tactic in hockey.

I see many people here don't understand how football works. He did the right thing. Germany was 0:1 down. They needed to get at least the draw. It did not matter if they loose 0:1, 0:2 or 0:3. So he abandoned his post to help Germany score the crucial goal. It's quite common. Goalkeepers join their teams to help score last minute goals. Imagine your team being 0:1 down and you need to tie the game. You run to help your mates. Even if the opposite team scores another goal it makes no difference because you were already 0:1 down, more goals make no difference. So you take that chance, it either 1:1 and you save the day or 0:2 which makes no difference at all.

The issue wasn't that he was out the goal and playing offense in the final minutes. His fatal mistake was that instead of booting a cross into the area, where all 10 other German players were waiting, he tried to put a move on a SK player and ended up losing the ball. He fancied himself a midfielder (he was known for this), and paid for it.

Neur moved up because at this stage of the game, with literally seconds remaining, it doesn't matter if they lose by one point or by 10. A loss by any amount is certain elimination from the tournament.
Neur moved up to create attacking chances. In hindsight, this still failed, but defending is not as productive here, particularly since Germany was already dominating possession of the ball. They needed more targets to pass the ball up the field so they can attack harder.
Despite appearances, Neur didn't move up the field spontaneously because he was tired of playing GK, lol.

Losing 1-0 or 2-0 really does not matter. In both cases, Germany would still be knocked out of the world cup.
As a result, the goalkeeper decided to push forward. It was a good bargain, either tie the game 1-1 or lose 0-1 or 0-2, which, previously mentioned, does not matter.
However, the mistake by Neuer is that:
    1) He went to midfield while he just recovered from injury, probably not enough training, that's why he fluffed that ball control.
    2) He should have kept with the line of defenders as they would be better outfield than Neuer, especially since he was in bad shape, as mentioned in part 1.
    Hopefully this clears things up.
    Cheers!

Although he did basically give South Korea a free goal he took the chance to try and do something to help the team win but they fell short. Good luck to Germany next world cup

Usually the GK come to front and join all-attack scheme when the losing team playing a dead ball (corner or freekick).
To be come in an active play, in front of his own defender is very risk. As you can see S.Korea almost intercept when he failed receive the pass.
And all of that led to the moment he slip/try to dribble the ball. S.Korea punished Germany by intercepting and throwing a very-well long-pass that converted into goal.
We've know Neuer loves play defend or midfield as he do it in Germamy and Bayern. But this time is rudiculous and the odd not in their favor.

Second - why was he even trying to dribble if he's lame at it ?
Third - even if Germany had scored, they were still dropping out... so what's the point?

I remember watching this. I was like, "WTF Neuer, what's he doing!?" And when H. M. Son scored, my brother and I literally laughed our heads off! My brother asked, "Does he think he's Rene Higuita?", because trust me, Higuita would DEFINITELY have done a better job receiving that throw-in without being dispossessed by the Korean defender. I know Higuita was robbed by Roger Milla, which cost Colombia the quarterfinals, but that was because the pass to him was not good and before he could control it properly, Milla robbed him of it. Here, Neuer received the throw-in well, but then tried to dribble, which ultimately cost him. Higuita would have done better in my opinion.

    • @roy4173
      @roy4173 6 лет назад +19

blue giraffe defenders push up regularly in a football match, not just in desperate situations.
This was a desperate situation. They pulled the gk forward because they needed to score at all costs to stay in the game. If the opponent scores again as a result like they did this game, the outcome doesn't change, they're still going home.
Again, even if Korea doesn't score a second point in this game because Germany focused harder on defense, Germany still goes home.
Their objective at this point isn't to prevent opponent scoring, but to instead maximize their own scoring potential. Not to mention the entire match Germany dominated possession of the ball.

That's how desperate they became. There's no justification in the goalkeeper going so far forward. The chances of Korea scoring in a unmanned goal then became much higher than that of Neuer, with his lumbering pace and elementary outfield skills, scoring or helping his team score. He actually made things worse.

    • @thawtayza1892
      @thawtayza1892 6 лет назад

It did not make things worse, my friend.
      Cheers!
