Absolutely delightful. I serendipitously discovered this video and was enthralled. I hope this opera company receives the praise and recognition it most certainly deserves. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming and refreshing production. Well done.

I'm doing an analysis on The Mikado in general. Is there a way I can get the lyrics to all the pieces in this performance, especially those with the lyrics changed from the original opera?

Absolutely incredible from top to bottom! The updated text really takes the piece to another level, and the production is so so witty and hilariously detailed… I am in stitches. So enjoyable!

The orchestra and singing are great. As for the rest of the show, they didn't "gild the lily", they smeared it and made a mess.

When singerrs are stage left, the microphones are barely adequate.

This is really one of the most beautiful and funny operas ever written, some might say number one. Unfortunately, because it was traditionally performed with white actors in Asian makeup/garb it became problematic and destined to be retired. But inventive ways to modernize it while keeping the songs can keep it alive. Taking it out of Japan and setting it in the White House was brilliant.

It is a novel and innovative take on The Mikado. Agreed, not as good as the Miller Mikado. But worth seeing and listening to. Lovely singing and very good acting. Well done to the brave and talented Bronx company

Interesting idea for the Mikado. But sorry I don’t think it was pulled off.
Nice singers and actors, but they were let down with overall production execution between directors and lighting, sound engineering, staging, lack of movement and confusion in direction and changes to script.
You got to be careful when you change classics to an extreme.

Yikes. Let's not offend anyone by setting it in or near Japan. Let's not mock anything English. Maybe next time we can do it nude on ice. Wonderful musical resources squandered on this this this thing

  • @gabriellew6467
    @gabriellew6467 10 месяцев назад +3

Utterly pointless. Let's not offend the Japanese by wearing traditional Japanese robes. But wait - let's still keep the title Mikado (uniquely Japanese) and take the chance it may or may not offend them. Replace Gilbert's witty, intelligent texts with (yawn) something tedious and inept, dull, dreary and lacking humour.
Oh good, there we have this production: some emperor's new clothes dimwits will shout hurrah, guaranteed.
From now on, no more black Othello, no more Japanese Madame Butterfly, Fiddler on the Roof with definitely no reference to Jewish people, no lederhosen in The Sound of Music - please, wake up, be woke!

  • @deewesthill6966

There were several jazz and swing versions of The Mikado that, while they didn't improve the original, were more interesting than this one with pointless changes to lyrics and dialogue and costuming.

  • @feelthejoy

It doesn’t make sense to “update” the setting and lyrics when you still have plot points about chopping peoples heads off, being condemned for flirting, etc. Ko Ko’s “accent” is a stupid an antisemitic trope brought to life. Also, enough with “lol cell phones exist” 🤦‍♀️ Probably the worst Yum Yum, Pitti Sing, and Peep Bo I’ve seen so far

    • @feelthejoy

Side note the choreographer should do some sort of penance for their crimes

    • @BookshelfQBattler

Condemning for flirting and head chopping…Gilbert and Sullivan were mocking how even in 1800s, society gets riled up about an issue, passes an extreme law against it, but then decides since everyone is doing it they’ll pass a hundred exceptions to the rule but still act like they took a righteous stance.
We did it in America with prohibition

Omg this is making me sick!!! Who wants to be reminded of this terrible world when AT THE THEATRE. At least the Miller production had taste. This is why I'm a soloist and not some pathetic pawn sell out "actor " "For shame...poor wandering ones". Literally you should all be ashamed. Schwarzkopf says...like "spraying graffiti over masterpieces".

This is such a bizarre production. I do love the pre-covid political jokes, but sometimes they're thrown in at weird spots. It's weird trying to figure out which party each person belongs to (edit: wait is EVERYONE a MAGA Republican?), and how the government structure of a small Japanese mountain town is plastered over a Washington D.C. setting.
Edit: the pattern I think I'm noticing here is Nenkipu is Jared Kushner, Yumyum is Ivanka Trump, Katisha is Hillary Clinton, Puba is Rudy Giuliani/Mike Pence, and Koko is... Donald Trump?
Edit: No. Koko is Tucker Carlson.
Edit: They made the Mikado...🤦🏻‍♀️ Vladimir Putin?
Edit: Who are Pitising and her Pipbo supposed to be? I can't tell.

Replacing WS Gilbert lyrics????? Sondheim wouldn’t have tried it. The level of craft here is so low, it’s as if a fifth-grader wrote additional scenes to Hamlet, and hope no one would notice.
As a crash course: the lyrics have to do more than just rhyme, and of course they have to rhyme, they have to scan well on the human tongue and on the melodies to which they are joined. They need a sense and rhythm to how ideas push the song forward, and when to rest on formal ritornello. This is reminiscent of that idiot who took turpentine to a renaissance painting and then tried to color it in. I swear, whoever did this incompetent, offensive bit of hackery probably isn’t even aware of the level of craft that goes into one proper line, let alone hiow a lyric needs to hang together formally. Get the heck out of the arts if you have no respect for them. And if you don’t care for the Gilbert of Gilbert and Sullivan, well, you deserve every bit of respect you are giving this fine artist which is to say, less than zero.
    This is disgusting and offensive.
