It's ironic that he wrote all the songs- except for this one. It's one of my favourites though and he is thought very highly of my family. My mother celebrates his birthday every year with a Barry bbq . I left my 3 year old daughter with her for a couple of hours and she pointed to his picture framed on the wall and asked her who it was - it was no surprise that she was able to recognise and say his full name. 3 years later she had her 1st ticket to go see him in concert but covid has delayed that. Im happy we share the love of him in our family x

He originally gave it to David Cassidy who sings it a whole lot better than Barry.
It became Manilow's signature song however David did the ULTIMATE VERSION of this wonderful song.

Bruce Johnson gave "I Write The Songs" to David Cassidy as Bruce was producing David's first album on RCA records (after his first few solo albums and all of The Partridge Family album's were on bell records)called "The Higher They Climb The Harder They Fall."
Barry Manilow heard it and recorded his version of it.
In the USA they didn't release David's original version but they did release Manilow's cover of it.
And it went to Number one.
David's version was released as a Double "A" sided single in The United Kingdom.
Paired with "Get It Up For Love" the single got to Number Eleven.
BTW "Get It Up For Love" got banned in the UK.

Also, lyrics aren't always literal, so these lyrics may be something well intentioned and not pompous at all.

He looks like my Gramma. And I love him and everything he has done. He is more talented than most of the music industry today, combined. He is full of love and passion, and he is my earliest memories of love and heartbreak, so he taught me more of life than Gramma did. What a great and special man who deserves every accolade he ever received, and a host of those he didnt. I am THRILLED if anyone reads these words, because they came here to hear Barry sing. We are all better for it.

Barry looks v embarrassed and fed up with having to sing these songs all the time but he shouldn't. They're good songs and he sings them very well.

Barry bendita tu edad, benditos tus logros. 🕊️💕🕊️💕🕊️💕🕊️💕🕊️💕🕊️💕🕊️💕

Mr. Manilow has a great big large mind. I am thankful for him from a young man development point. Helped many of us being young to love music back in the day. All of us men and women. Your songs interwebs us somehow. Just respect each other please. Be civil. Thank you.
