I didn't expect this to get emotional. I've never seen Peter get emotional. I didn't even know he'd received the Polar Music Prize, and I'm Swedish!
I suppose I thought it would be just another bloody acceptance speech, but Peter made it very personal and sweet, and showed respect to both his parents and the prize.
I've listened to Peter Gabriel from early Genesis, and on through his solo carrier. He thanked his mother. A truly beautiful man.
An amazing artist, singer songwriter. Sharing the stage with artists from different cultures. A humanitarian. It doesn't get better than that.
an incredible talent. From a musical and humanitarian standpoint. I saw him first in 1975 at the Lamb Dies Down on Broadway in Bristol. It changed my life.

Nice to see an elder statesman of rock aging with grace. Peter Gabriel looks terrific and dignified; a far cry from the other rockers of his generation who dye their hair or have wigs and wear clothing they're far too old to look good in.

I have loved Peter Gabriel, and his artistry since I was introduced to the music of Genesis by a High-school friend - a lovely Armenian girl with knee-length hair, who wore Victorian dresses, and walked through the halls at school often carrying a Rose, and Book of Poetry. This was in Central California in 1973. She, and Peter Gabriel changed my life forever. Who would have believed that this quirky, rail-thin Mime-like oddball - who was prone to wear Fox-Heads, and red dresses, and unsettling masks would evolve into a Visionary who would re-shape not only the World of Music, but also Technology, and Human Potential?!!! As our World becomes an even more frightening, and challenged place - People like Peter Gabriel are needed more now than ever! I thank the Gods, and His Lovely Mother that we still have him amongst us!

I have done some studio wiring work for Peter since 1987 and I can honestly say that he is the nicest, most humble Pro Musician that I have ever met (and I have met a few with my studio wiring work).
He probably is, but a comment about a man's humility on a video of him accepting an award made me chuckle.
Peter deserves this “Nobel” for music. It’s correct he metioned the early years with Genesis. Nobody can forget the great contribution to music he made with this group. They come in the first 70’s in Italy many times to play in clubs or theatres in very little locations in my country.

For years I told my wife that Peter Gabriel was a gift to Humanity, but, she never really got his songs, liking other guys like Cat Stevens, Bob Marley etc...all amazing artists! But, I always said that there is more to Gabriel, without diminishing those other artists. I love that he was recognized like this. Peter Gabriel is forever!
Biko is pretty straight forward to 'get'. And it says it all. Cat Stevens turned into yusuf and said that Salmon Rushdie deserved to die for what he wrote about islam. I like peace train but its pretty hard to take from a guy who thinks somebody deserves death for something they wrote.

My oldest son’s name is Gabriel because of him.
6:05 "...There is certainly a large voice in my head which says: How the hell did I get here?...As a child I'm sure I would never have been identified as a future Polar prize winner. I was failed most of my exams, plunking away on the piano as my mother will tell you, I wanted to learn oboe but they said I wasn't talented enough. I remember early days of Genesis, one successful London agent who took a hour of his life to tell us why we would never make it in music and why we should go back to doing whatever, crawl back into whatever hole we´d came out of..."

Have enjoyed the music of Genesis/Peter Gabriel since the 70s. No doubt he's an icon , ahead of his time! Some would kill to have a fraction fraction of his talent. Last of the Mohicans 😑
People of his generation PLAYED instruments,learned music,either at school,and/or from parents,relatives or paid lessons at home,or somewhere else. Now ,it has been computerized to death,where everything sounds /looks the same,or nearly the same,and it is SO monotonous.
Now it is all showmanship,no real musical knowledge ,if any,basically poking some knobs on a machine,instead of actually learning notes,chords ,and other musical terms.

one of my highlights in my busy world travelling life. Two time live: The lamb... An honour, Peter is now the best paid musician in the world. 260.000.000 Euros heavy. And he earned each cent but no jealousy.

I was blessed to be exposed to Mr. Gabriel's music when he was with Genesis. He has always been trying to change the world working with Amnesty International, Nelson Mandela & through his WOMAD FESTIVAL. I am a better person because of him. Thank you Mr. Gabriel.

No one has ever heard of "Mary Robinson" ... we have all heard of Peter Gabriel. I'll say no more.
I'm puzzled as to why you felt the need to say that. You have never heard of her but clearly the awarding committee had and chose her to present the award. As stated, Mary Robinson was the first female president of Ireland and was a UN Commisioner for Human Rights. Her speech makes it clear why she was an appropriate choice to make the presentation.
Biko wasn't used in Cry Freedom, but it would have been given radio time around release time of the movie.
Liked Peters music all my life. Both his work with Genesis and solo stuff. Jeweler the outrageous prices being charged for his latest tour is an insult to his fans
