More low IQ Hollywood 'go woke, go broke' comes up with. What they don't understand is that James Bond is supposed to be debonair, a rough diamond, somewhat brazen, an adventurer and, yes, an expert seducer. Since such hollyweirdos only have a vocabulary of about 4 adjectives, it is hardly surprising that this has been labelled 'sexist' 'not current' etc, but let me explain why this is predictable drivel 1) It is merely a fact that some spies, past and present, male and female were adventurers, had to be brazen and were expert seducers. This was in order to gain information, set honeytraps and so on. 2)There is nothing immature about a man being a rogue loner with wry wit. There is nothing inherently sexist about a man seducing a woman, or multiple women in the context of the story or generally, depending on context. We live in an era where women quite casually gloat about having 10 boyfriends who believe they are wild ass kickers. Should there be a show where women go around conquering in some manner, for example? There already have been many shows of such nature. Context is everything. 3) If Bond is just a guy who goes around punching people then talking about War and Peace with his granny, or having a cup of hot milk before bed we are in a different film all together. That film might be good, or it might be horrible. It might look like a crude and lacklustre version of Jason Bourne. Most people who support a woke Bond wouldn't understand an intellectual film either. Why not keep tastes separate so you can appreciate each one? 4) Audiences are smart enough to know what fiction is. No human can fend off 200 henchmen weilding machine guns with an ankle pistol, anyway. They can certainly build themselves to be formidable warriors, but they can't do that. Therefore, you might as well accept that these are archetypes. They have some basis in reality but take the audience into a sense of extraordinary. 5)Not everyone lives a boring life. Yes most woke people live with their moms till 50. Daniel Craig said in 2012 that going more serious and modernising was partly a reaction to Powers mockery of Bond tropes [saying bluntly 'Mike Myers F-Ked us']. I can't see a 50/'60's setting really being viable due to losing product placement/increased costs etc. I think other media [such as the novels] is where you can do that setting with original stories [like many of the recent books].

With my real name being named after James Bond this is cool to see 🙌 we need 007 to continue to be the media to get people talking about it and the franchise to continue
Nobody ever asks "should Miss Marple be a man", or "should Poirot be a woman". They are hugely popular, the books they appear in are globally the highest selling novels ever. The reason is those characters are not sexy or modern enough to make a political point if they were gender swapped. Also the Agatha Christie estate would flat out block it and Agatha is already a feminist icon so they show her more respect than Ian Fleming, who is a great scalp for progressives. I am tired of the "should Bond be a woman" question. You gave a great response David, thanks
Barbara Broccoli has ALWAYS been uncomfortable with who James Bond is and has sought to tailor the character to her own personal satisfaction. When called out on her declaration that Bond's treatment of women would reflect the Me-Too era, she said that "Bond needs to evolve." I don't think she's in touch with the fanbase at all. She's jacked up on her ego and from her recent statement in Variety, she'll be doubling down on "evolving" Bond. I believe that the next era of Bond will be the last and it will be a short one.
@@rikardandersson183 That's a great idea! I'd happily "evolve" The Sex and The City franchise! And I'll take all the criticism in stride just like Barbara Broccoli did when she killed James Bond.
@@rikardandersson183 No Sex and The City - where its guys who are incel, have been #metoo'd, are "beta males" that haven't a clue, etc... And one "semi-normal" guy who does kind of OK, but he's under 6' and not a millionaire, so still not that successful, but at least can give insight into the failings of his even more loser friends.
OK, that's fair enough. On the other hand, having a Bond like Connery's or Moore's would definitely fly in the MeToo era. Those Bonds did have some seriously terrible moments with regards to not respecting women and even sexual assault. So, I am very happy to say that Bond has evolved beyond those character traits, possibly under the influence of Barbara Broccoli.
@@meganhartmann180 All we're talking about is Bond seducing women, not sexually harassing or assaulting them. Broccoli made sure that the only woman Bond slept with was Madeline. Also, she thought it was ok to kill him off in the same movie. That's very PC.
Making a mixed race Live and Let Die was considered risky at the time and was bold progressive move or becoming mature when it comes to the AIDS crisis and safe sex in the 80s. This series has been progressive if anything.
EXACTLY! Great point David and well spoken! Yes, I've always said that. Let Bond be Bond. He's the only part of the franchise that should NOT change. Make better, more diverse roles for women, for the villains and for the supporting cast. Put diversity behind the camera, have directors and writers that are women and people of color BUT... with one rule, Bond stays Bond, a "misogynistic dinosaur from the Cold War", a blunt instrument, a "man" of action but an economy of words. Dalton said it best when asked how he would play James Bond, he said he went back to Fleming. Always go back to Fleming.
James Bond is a FANTASY character so isn't like the normal everyday world if people acted like him in reality they wouldn't last long so it's simple Leave It Alone let the Fiction entertainment do it's job and be a safety valve to stop us going nuts in this stressful world
Agreed. The films have always modernised and reinvented themselves with the times. Like when Bond went to space after the success of Star Wars. Or when Bond went Miami Vice/Lethal Weapon in Licence to Kill. But at the core is always that same character we know and love, thrust into different situations.
Is there any chance you could do a prep talk to the next movie writers saying exactly the same thing as you've said here? This is EXACTLY what I want my Bond to be.
Thank GOD you didn’t cower to the pressures of the media and work agenda. THANK YOU for standing up for what you believe in and what 99% of us believe in and not pandering to the “woke” in fear of being cancelled. I respect you more for that than anything, David. Again, thank you for being the voice of reason without fear.
No need to modernize something that’s timeless. Bond was modern in the 50’s when Fleming introduced him to the world. He was modern in the 60s when he made his cinema debut. He was modern in the 90s with the video game reaching new fans. He was modern in 06 when the series was rebooted. 007 is timeless! The superfluous elements should evolve but the core components should never change! I suspect Ian Fleming wouldn’t have sold the rights to EON if he knew one day the character would be altered in the name of progressivism- I do hope the producers realize that and I thank you for being a great representative of the Bond fan community David !!
Completely agree David. Thank you for your explanation and all your videos. At the same time I think it's a shame that you have to explain your answers because what you said, at least to me, is obvious and common sense. Your Cobra Kai comparison is spot on. We do watch it for Johnny "Bad ass". Great video.
Right on David 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 I appreciate how you answered the question in a way that wasn't defensive or demeaning. Reasons why you are the ultimate Bond Ambassador !!!! The geopolitics of the modern world and the foundation of Ian Fleming/Sean Connery is the receipe. Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall are excellent examples of Bond in modern world.
No, in fact, let's go back and make it a period piece, set in the 1950/60s cold war era of the original books. And seeing as Craig's Bond is dead, and we're onto a second reboot, we can go back to the original novels and remake them (preferably in a more faithful way).
I'm looking forward to seeing Aidan Turner as the next James Bond-- it should be really good and interesting--- Sean Connery is always the best-- Sean Connery is always a great actor--- long live Sean Connery...
Spot on answers to a present day line of questioning. Something to consider is Ms. Broccoli's half brother, Michael G. Wilson, is also part of the mix. I'm sure he will have significant influence as to the direction of the franchise. If they go woke, they'll only be pandering to people who do not care about the origin and story of the movies. I'm hopeful Ms. Broccoli and Mr. Wilson will be a good balance for the future of 007 and come to the realization what the vast majority of Bond fans want to see. That is, keep Bond the character Ian Fleming and Albert "Cubby" Broccoli worked so hard to create. Therefore, Broccoli and Wilson's storyline decisions based off of Fleming's books are warranted. I do like the idea as some other commenters have mentioned to stress impressive high-tech gadgets and vehicles as well as punchy, memorable one liners.
70 years ago Ian Fleming gave us this character that has kept us entertained ever sense. It would be disrespectful to him if we changed his creation to such an extent that Fleming wouldn’t recognize his creation. Change his situations And environment, but Bond is the North Star and must be constant.
Having read the Fleming books personally the Roger Moore version of James Bond in some of the films and Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day were a very loose version of Fleming's Bond. Enjoyable movies for the most part.
As always you represented The Bond Community with tremendous cool, style and panache! Great job! And best of all - you also had the exact perfect answers to everything that you were asked. And I suspect the answers that the vast majority of us would all completely agree with!
I think you can change some elements of the character, but not the core elements that make up who he is, that would fundamentally change the character into someone else completely and thus having to fundamentally change the overall story. You can change hair color for instance, accent or even race. Ultimately that doesn't change anything or radically change the character or the story. But imo some of his core elements are he is British, he is a spy for MI6, he is a person of action who can handle himself, and is a very masculine character. He is arguably the most famous symbol of masculinity in pop culture. Imo to change that would alter a core trait of the character that would alter who fundamentally that person is and thus story and also have to change aspects of all the other characters around them. Would like to see more women and personalities that are spies for MI6. Like the ones in the book Double or Nothing.
It’s like food If you don’t like certain ingredients then don’t eat it. So if you don’t like James Bond films Don’t watch simple It’s the fans that watch these films and if the woke brigade don’t like then don’t watch it. Yeh improve the ingredients just don’t make it completely different.
A brilliant interview and after discussion. There's nothing genuine or groundbreaking about the modernisation of popular characters, it's simply paying lip service to the loudest most militant voices in this world. The problem is, whatever change the producers make to appease modern audiences, it will never be enough. If they gave a black actor or a woman the part they'd have to ensure he or she is portrayed in a positive light, otherwise it would be deemed as a negative portrayal of that gender/race. So essentially they'd be changing the character completely, which isn't what people want.
I think your should try to write a script for bond. I would like to encourage you to try to get a foot in the door with that! Our beloved franchise might be in good hands then. Agreeing btw 100% the points your making there.. keep up the good work!
Agree 100%! I'd like to point out, that for the most part the Bond women have been indeed strong, and I think the best example of this is going back to Dr No, and Honey Rider. Just listen to her telling Bond her backstory. She's a woman who can stand up for herself, which she symbolically does when she stands up in the boat at the end of the film. She is a very tough and independent character. And whether the character is a Bond ally or not, strong women have always been apart of the Bond films.
Henry Caval as an the next bond Christopher Nolan as the Director And I think it’s be cool idea to bring back the actors who played Q and Moneypenny Just like how they brought back Judi Dench for M. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Given the recent 'DC' news with Cavil I think he can be taken out of the running given he's going to be tied up with another franchise for a while and hence can't do that and Bond [Daniel Craig turned down Thor for this reason]. Nolan is certainly more plausible [given he's worked in franchises before] but given he usually produces himself I'm still a bit doubtful but wouldn't rule it out after he's done with Oppenheimer. I can see Moneypenny or Q coming back for sure.
There was someone who "modernized" Bond, who did have the character "evolve," who did make Bond "vulnerable," "emotional," "conflicted." That person was Ian Fleming.
David makes a brilliant observation about Bond. There's a great history of Anti-Hero's, that are not Angels. Characters shouldn't be who we should be. We watch films for Lord Byron, because we don't want to be him. Bond is a professional spy, he does duplicitous things to save the day. Love it and be thankful it's not your life.
I sense the interviewer she had no choice to ask the question of modernizations the James Bond. As I can sense she has no push back to the answer. More kind of relieved “Ok I asked the question, I did my job”.
12:37 I don't even think you need to say "for the time". Wai Lin was a more empowered character than anything we got in the Craig Era. She wasn't just empowered for 1997, she was empowered full stop.
I agree with you David. Everything you said makes sense. One of the reasons the Bond franchise has endured I believe is because it has kept up with the times. Modernized so to speak. That doesn’t mean Bond himself needs to change that much. Even as a woman, I also think Bond should never be female. That is not the character Fleming created. He is a cold blooded assassin who loves the ladies, too much booze and well prepared eggs. I just really hope the producers go back to making movies that are fun. I just rewatched all 4 Brosnan films (yes, even DAD) and even with the horrible dialogue and stupid plot in DAD I had a great time. I didn’t come away feeling depressed. I also just recently rewatched all of the Connery films (except the atrocious DAF) and those were so much fun too. Connery was top notch in his first four but I think Pierce will always hold a special place in my heart since he is the Bond I grew up with (first saw in theater). Casino Royale is also my favorite movie and I love the Thunderball theme too. My very favorite theme would be between “You Know My Name” or “The World Is Not Enough” though. Also really like the Skyfall and Live and Let Die themes. Oh and besides the theme song and Connery, Luciana Paluzzi and Claudine Auger are the best parts of Thunderball. I think Fiona Volpe is one of the very best henchmen (well, henchwoman in her case) in the entire franchise.
A key part of Bond is being modern- Every Bond has brought about modern fashion, flashy cars, futuristic technology, and going to more exotic locations with better representation of race, gender and culture.
You carry yourself really well , always proud to have you represent the bond community and you delt with a difficult question perfectly 👍

However there, amazingly enough, really still exists people who know that having 50 genders will not make you interesting, impressive, worldly nor will it give you stories to tell your grandkids. Some people really do travel the world, drink exotic drinks, meet many unique people and, yes, do many more of the things Bond does. There are even people who have a 'settled' life, who still exist within a paridigm of adventure and actually achieve things.
So there we have it. Although you will not want to hear this final, slightly conspiritoral point. There will always be someone who benefits from humans being bland, dull, weak and dumb. You may think it can't be so, but history proves otherwise. By following the woke hollyweird films and giving them your money, you support this dilution of culture into something akin to dishwater mixed in with days old sink froth. Luckily most people don't watch woke Hollyweird films and seek out the good ones. Just requires these barely conscious film producers to figure this out.
With my real name being named after James Bond this is cool to see 🙌 we need 007 to continue to be the media to get people talking about it and the franchise to continue
Well said David! Great segment and perspective.
Thank you David for finally putting my own thoughts and feelings on who Bond should be into words.
Imagine the outrage if a male producer wanted to change the Sex and The City franchise to be more male friendly
Totally agree David. Keep Bond as Bond !!
outstanding! well said brother!🍸
Nice to explore the concept ❤
Making a mixed race Live and Let Die was considered risky at the time and was bold progressive move or becoming mature when it comes to the AIDS crisis and safe sex in the 80s. This series has been progressive if anything.
Progressing towards what though? I don't think trans kids, emasculation and forced "diversity" are going to add anything to 007.
Very cool, David. Great interview with BBC News.
You’re absolutely right. Good job!
We need is a classic bond from the Sean & Roger days the super villain his or hers henchmen there lare the one liners humour
Back when a spy flick was a spy flick
I couldn't agree more. Nicely said DZ
So the women should be butch while Bond should stay masculine? Kind of hypocritical, don't you think?
@@rikardandersson183 nor what he said at all
@@terrancehall9762 And what do you think "more diverse roles for women" means? More butch feminist characters like Naomi, of course
@@rikardandersson183 you are stuck on stupid...they had a variety of women in nttd
one of the best videos from David
Excellent points! Bond’s characteristics were written specifically to have contrast and balance in the stories. Leave him alone!
James Bond is a FANTASY character so isn't like the normal everyday world if people acted like him in reality they wouldn't last long so it's simple Leave It Alone let the Fiction entertainment do it's job and be a safety valve to stop us going nuts in this stressful world
This is time to make James Bond more retro. More classic and classy.
Like Man From U.N.C.L.E
And Pierce Brosnan as M and Timothy Dalton as Secretary Of Denfense ❤
Yes - Yes - and more Yes! Finally someone said it. Well done!!!
You explain this very well. Absolutely annoying that we have to even be having this discussion.
Very well said David
Very well said. Look at what happened to the abomination that was the 2016 Ghostbusters film. Don’t try to “fix” what isn’t broken.
Brilliantly said 🙌
Incredibly well said,🎉
Well said. Let Bond be Bond. If Bond is insufficiently X, Y, or Z, then create some other work where X, Y, or Z is developed.
I'd like to see a return to the Sean Connery mold. That includes focusing more on detective work and less on brute strength and firepower.
I hope David gets a cameo in a bond film some day with calvin
Are you back to wearing the 45.5mm PO?!
You’re so on point my man
I'm looking forward to seeing Aidan Turner as the next James Bond-- it should be really good and interesting--- Sean Connery is always the best-- Sean Connery is always a great actor--- long live Sean Connery...
Great responses. Kudos.
Fleming himself has made changes and even past movies. They have went away from alot of the problematic stuff
Congratulations David. You have said it all..
As always you represented
The Bond Community with tremendous cool, style and panache!
Great job!
And best of all -
you also had the exact perfect answers to everything that you were asked.
And I suspect the answers that the vast majority of us would all completely agree with!
I agree with Lucy that the suit is fantastic! And I agree with your point of view too!
Excellent job, David! A perfect answer to this ridiculous question.
Well Done David,
You Handled BBC News Bond- like.
Handled yourself very well. It's not an easy thing to do.
Great episode, agree with everything you say
It’s like food
If you don’t like certain ingredients then don’t eat it.
So if you don’t like James Bond films
Don’t watch simple
It’s the fans that watch these films and if the woke brigade don’t like then don’t watch it.
Another great video
Fantastic video!! You crushed that interview!
David you are an absolute pro Sir! Well done!
Amen! Preach it!!
Interesting thought 💭
And what we can learn from this about women and Bond ❤
Henry Caval as an the next bond
Christopher Nolan as the Director
And I think it’s be cool idea to bring back the actors who played Q and Moneypenny
Just like how they brought back Judi Dench for M.
David, it feels like Moore or Brosnan should be your favourite.
A tired question for sure. Great answer though David and way to stand your ground!
James Bond should always be a blunt instrument.
“Why” is such a perfect question to pose to them lol, they have no response
There was someone who "modernized" Bond, who did have the character "evolve," who did make Bond "vulnerable," "emotional," "conflicted." That person was Ian Fleming.
Shune Connery from the 007 movies was the best actor for 007 series till now 2023.
Yes I think you answered that question very well regarding Bond being a woman.
Great rapid fire interview. :)
Completely agree. 100%.
Perfect answer
I sense the interviewer she had no choice to ask the question of modernizations the James Bond. As I can sense she has no push back to the answer. More kind of relieved “Ok I asked the question, I did my job”.
12:37 I don't even think you need to say "for the time". Wai Lin was a more empowered character than anything we got in the Craig Era. She wasn't just empowered for 1997, she was empowered full stop.
meanwhile calvin: I should have being there! i'm from the damn uk! xD
