    "Any Day Now" has a woefully inept splice. Staggering this got through quality control.

    • @FrankieLovesElvis
      @FrankieLovesElvis 5 месяцев назад +6

      What about the digital clip, near the end when Elvis sings, “Any Day Now”, you can clearly hear, “Day Now” …
      This whole set is just a joke. Been waiting Forever for this release and it’s so disappointing.

    • @dchampe66
      @dchampe66 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@FrankieLovesElvis I listened to this set's version of "Any Day Now" and I hear, too, the splice right after the words "and you won't be around" towards the end of the song. Then, I played the released version from 'From Elvis in Memphis'. At the same moment (listening on fairly cheap in-ear headphones), behind the strings and backing vocals, I can barely make out the same spliced edit as a far off echo. I can't be for sure it's the exact same splice edit, but perhaps when Chips Moman and company were putting it altogether originally, they knew they could cover this spliced audio with post-editing overdubs. Now that the overdubs are removed Matt Ross-Spang decided to leave the original 'veneer,' if you will, intact, maybe setting out only to improve the mix, and not fix? If you catch my meaning. Only a theory.

    • @FrankieLovesElvis
      @FrankieLovesElvis 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@dchampe66 And a theory it is.
      If you listen back to the true undubbed versions found on the great FTD American Sound sessions, you will not hear that same digital click. it’s not even present on the original overdubbed version.
      And the whole gag line gimmick of “as Elvis heard it in the studio” is completely false, as there are overdubs all over the set, sans the SUN material,
      which used inferior sources to begin with. Hope this helps.

      ♥ Well :-) English is not my native language - I am Elvis fan since 1974 - born in 1963 - collecting seriously from 1980 (so you know already the import LPs and stuff) STRAIGHT FIRST HERE: The ELVIS MEMPHIS is a big mistake! 1) Many mixing "taste" mistakes 2) Elvis is too often too behind of the music 3) Strange emphases out of a sudden nearly on each song (especially on the 1969 songs!) 4) DON´T CRY DADDY is sooo terrible! So un-natural! The whole Elvis & Band feeling is gone! The guitar is to loud! The guitar is not making the pause - which makes the Elvis mood before starting the lyrics again totally ruinined! The "second vocie" (????) Who is that really????? Don´t Cry Daddy got a super duet already: LISA MARIE with her father from the live presentation back then in Memphis!!!! this "new" Don´t Cry Daddy - it hurts, sorry! 5) LONG BLACK LIMOUSINE - in the original a masterpiece of everybody, who was there back then in early Winter 1969! BUT HERE: WHAT IS THIS AT 0:46 min ????? What???? And Elvis is tooo much in the back - too much behind the music!!! Also here - the special magic of that song (Super Elvis & Super Band!) is gone! What did the producers with this Elvis pearl, no Diamond???? 6) ANY DA NOW: At 02:26 !!!!! What is this??????? Elvis voice cut! And Elvis voice during the song once loud - then not loud - also here - the magic between Elvis & The Band in this SENSATIONAL SONG is destroyed! And the failure at 02:26 is not wearth to let this boy set went trough a control by the label of the GREATEST ARTIST OF ALL TIME: ELVIS PRESLEY! 7) SUSPICIOUS MINDS: It is stressy from the first moment on to listen! Totally out of beat and super feeling of maybe the MOST IMPORTANT AND KNOW ELVIS SONG OF THEM ALL! So ... alone THESE FAILURES should activate to delete the 1969 CD and do it again with the style of the AMERICAN SOUND 1969 makers - same nice made as the 1970 ELVIS IN NASHVILLE and 1971 ELVIS BACK IN NASHVILLE ... this all are facts & figures not TASTE - whereby THE TASTE OF THE ELVIS FANS & ELVIS EXPERTS is not something to legnect, my dear Elvis people! ELVIS PRESLEY - THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE! (The thing is ... I never ever had such a bad mood to listen to more songs of this box set - WITH A SUPER SUPER SUPER COVER PHOTO OF OUR MAN!

    Hey Ed, thank you for these great videos about the Elvis Memphis vinyl and CD box set! I was like you, I had to give the vinyl "another listen" before I made up my mind. And in the comments, what people said about "Don't Cry Daddy" being a mistake and how could they put that out without realizing their mistake...I thought I was bamboozled too and thought about returning it. However you probably already know this since you are one of the first people to put out any new Elvis information, but there is a RUclips video, MEMPHIS Listening Session (an hour and 25 minutes long) recorded at the Quest house by Graceland by Tom Brown and the producers, and they explain the whole recording....it's like a different version or different track, if you will. Like you have said, when you are used to hearing Elvis songs for 45+ years sounding a certain way, it's difficult to hear the stripped down versions. "Don't Cry Daddy" I thought was almost unlistenable, with the "echo"...but the producers said Elvis is singing harmony with himself. If you have time, watch the Graceland video MEMPHIS Listening Session....very informative and it gives a different light onto this version. I might actually keep it...haha...and I am happy I discovered it thank you to you, Ed!

    They only recorded the backing track for Don;t Cry Daddy on the 15th Jan. Then Elvis did his vocal overdub to that track a week later (January 22) and then his two harmony vocal overdubs (January 24).
    In The Ghetto was recorded on 20th Jan and back up vocals were done 5 days later. Elvis did replacement vocals in February and strings were overdubbed in middle of March. You can hear the strings on this version so clearly this is not an undubbed version.

      I've listened to a lot of the new album and I think it is fantastic. Now you can listen to Elvis Presley without interruptions of horns and high-singing choral groups and the instruments brought up when required with the clear vocal. It's not perfect, but it is much better sound. You wanted new tracks. You got them Elvis fans.

      @@djreid- think about this - the originals with the overdubs are what Elvis actually approved and signed off on so there are no interruptions on those originals as you put it. These are not new tracks per se either - they are the same tracks undubbed or dubbed or remixed or whatever terminology you wish to use.

I got 14.000 audio files in my computer - nearly 700 books in english - listening to each available concert ... FOUND THE SECOND SUNG VERSE ON HOUND DOG LIVE 1970 :-) so far we all know Elvis doing after 1968 HOUND DOG LIVE only just singing the 1st verse :-) and already on the TTWII-SE 3 CD box I realized the reprise on YLTLF in the super quality (many Elvis fans did not believe me - because they did not hear the whole song to the end :-) ) ED - YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!

Who has in his collection a lot of previous material, can make comparisons and sometimes discovers old stuff sounds better than new one. I'm buying the box CD set but mostly for a collection purpose than to listen to something really "original" 😂

    The cover picture for the 5-CD box set is the same as the picture that can be found on page 4 of the box set Elvis at Stax (2013). ''Coincidently'' the essay for Evis at Stax is from Robert Gordon as is this box set (Elvis Memphis). Ed, since you have the set, I'd be curious if you can compare notes between both box sets.

    Hi Ed, I hate to disagree with you about Suspicious Minds. I don't think the sweetening has been done with the violins and such to cover up the slightly out of sync guitar of Reggie Young. I think it's a mixing mistake on behalf of Matt Ross-Spang. I just checked the unfinished Master of the song on the FTD Back in Memphis, and it sounds perfect in sync. I don't think Chips Moman or Elvis would have accepted it, when Reggie was out of sync. He was a fabulous proffesional session player. I think when Matt Ross-Spang tried to put the track of Elvis and the track where Reggie his guitar was put together in the remixing process a mistake was made by him that caused the out of sync effect

      You miss the whole point of the album. It's stripped down to hear Elvis Presley's amazing vocals. Everybody's doing it now. Taylor Swift to Beatles to Drake to Elvis. These new mixes are amazing because it is now "high quality" originals like Elvis would have heard and more. The dual vocals on "Don't Cry Daddy" is brilliant. For the first time, I hear Elvis' songs whether Live or Studio so clear and controlled. Promised Land was tricky because Elvis lost his breath half way through the Chuck Berry Classic. This new mix brings the guitars up to match Elvis' pace so well and the awkward piano glisss has disappeared,thankfully, which ruined the Rock Classic. This Producer did some fantastic work to Elvis' "weary" vocals and gives them so much more "life".

    Hi Ed, thank you for such a great video. I always respect your judgment on and reviews. From what you said, I will totally avoid it! The other thing is, I am thinking that Elvis must have wanted them released the way they were originally released and I don’t think I would be happy hearing the songs sound different to what I am use to. Elvis intended his music to be heard the way these songs were originally released so why are we being brainwashed into buying songs we already have and love AGAIN and not in the way Elvis wanted them to sound. Also, how do we really know that those recordings in that substandard new album are indeed actually as as Elvis would have heard in the studio, before they got, what I would call, the professional treatment that Elvis would have wanted… we are just being told that this is the way it was before there was some kind of uncool treatment done - I think this is just another way to get our money. Just my thought. What do you think Ed?? May I add something different Ed?… I just found a perfect original USA first pressing vinyl LP of, Elvis Today, in my local record shop, still with the original shrink and hype sticker “featuring the hit single TROUBLE”. It sounds amazing, and to me, even better than the RCA Legacy CD (which sounded great anyway) except the CD does have the extra disc which is excellent. It only cost me (Australian dollars) $14 (about USA$9). So happy! It’s made my day! Oh and I wanted to let you know that I am slowly catching up with the Friday Music releases that you recommended, they DO sound amazing!It would be nice to hear what think of my comments above regarding Elvis Memphis. I have to say with "If you talk in your sleep" and "Suspicious Minds" between the original releases and the live versions, I think the overdubs were needed because they just added a little something to them in my opinion. Especially "Suspicious Minds", with the brass and the high parts from the women in the second half of the recording. It just makes the song that much more powerful.

    Now I'm really anxious to gives these a good detailed listen. At his point in the game just to get something a bit different is always of interest. There really isn't much left that we might consider "new". Sure they can release more soundboards but the setlists don't vary enough to keep that very interesting. Studio recordings...what don't we already have, in at least 2 or more remastered versions? I freely admit, as a collector, that as far as the music goes, I have much more than I "need", so in a sense I submit to being bamboozled with every new release happily...because I collect. The Memphis Recording Service & Memphis Mansion, which I like, are filled with different tweaks of recordings I already have and have been happy with. I don't know what BMG can put out to gain new fans for Elvis. He's been gone almost 50 years and any kind of massive resurgence in popularity just ain't gonna happen. It's a tall order for BMG to resell the same music that's been out there for 50 to 70 years to the casual listener and general public over and over again. They repackage and see what sticks. The hardcore among us are likely to buy regardless. I see an immediate future of "Anniversary" releases at every 5 or 10 year milestone and 2 big ones that will come to pass in my lifetime (God Willing)...the 50th Anniversary of his death '27 and his 100th birthday in '35. That's my rant, now I'll go back my collecting 😃

    Ed, I listened to the album on Apple Music with some headphones on, and there were some tracks that definitely stood out. But they were also some tracks that didn’t stand at all. In my opinion, I think the vinyl release could’ve gone without the early 50s tunes because we’ve had plenty of releases with that and the boy from Tupelo like you mentioned. I really want the box set for my collection but I just might pass on this one. The Nashville releases were solid.

    Great vid, your thoughts on Suspicious Minds are the same as my initial comments, covered by the strings, I kind of like the rawness of it, and how Elvis flawlessly sang through the drag, very cool. Sorry the LP didn’t impress but I am happy with the CD. You have to play it loud with the stereo towers front and back going, and your choice of beverage. Great stuff, weird splice and Elvis Daddy Duet (acronym EDD lol) and all. Fresh, some weirdness but overall the CD set is a great set IMO - enjoy the weekend everyone.

    The guitar/piano track (same track) on Suspicious Minds is screwed up in the mix here. This was mixed from the digital multitrack transfers and for some reason that one part has been time shifted over a split second, I have to imagine by mistake. Every other version of this master the guitar/piano track is in sync with the rest of the band, and lands right on the beat where it's meant to. Compare this to the undubbed master as is available on American Sound 1969 (from 2019) along with the Back In Memphis 2CD FTD. Ross-Spang screwed this one up big time. It's not a mistake in the original performance.

    I agree the first Nashville set was superb but since then I've not been impressed with the sound quality of the Matt Ross Spang releases.That Elvis Live LP was awful sound wise,no punch,cut far too quiet just so flat I've not listened to it after the first couple of spins.

    They're trying to keep the stripped down theme running. But this time it's kind of a hodge-podge, part Memphis based, part overdubs removed. Not much to do with the live set or the 50s set. For me, the only necessary parts of this are the 73 sessions and the 76 sessions. And there's a few songs missing. And I don't think the sound is as good as the last two sets.

    It's really sad how the "powers that be" have handled the last few Elvis releases. Elvis Memphis feels like a "Just get it out there and be done with it" release. The 50th anniversary releases started off great, giving us an opportunity to re-examine the 1970's material in a year-by-year way that satisfied the hard-core Elvis collector and vinyl lover. Having them all mixed by the same person helped to focus on the music with a sense of continuity. Then with Aloha, they have Ross-Sprang mix both nights for the CD, but decide to use an older Vic Anesini mix for the vinyl. Why? And now, instead of getting a great 2 disc vinyl set of Stax recordings for their 50th, we get this Frankenstein type release that doesn't please anyone. Is this vinyl release going to attract any new fans? Why have the Sun material on it? It just doesn't make any sense.

    In "Suspicious Minds," the guitar and piano are delayed by 44ms, which might seem like a short time but is significant in a musical performance, making it completely UNLISTENABLE. Mistakes happen; it's not something to blame Matt Ross-Spang for, as many other ears must have heard it and should have flagged the issue to fix it, including Vic Anesini, who mastered it, for example. Anyway... it's a shame. As for the rest of the songs, whether you like the new mixes or not, they are of excellent quality; it’s just a matter of taste.

    Agree with you Ed, I prefer the Legacy Edition of the Memphis show. It's not without its own issues but it at least has better defintion and clarity. His vocal is far too low on the latest mix [as are the background singers] and the whole thing sounds like one mushy lo-fi compressed mess. And why are they YET AGAIN closing the final side [of the LP set] with a live "How Great Thou Art" as they did with the "Burning Love: The RCA Rehearsals" vinyl!!!! Bizarre and zero originality. Elvis deserves far better than this.

    SUPER ED! ♥

    Hi, I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with your take on "Suspicious Minds." You're comparing this mix to the dubbed release with horns, backing vocals, and strings, but have you ever listened to the undubbed version from other sources? It seems like you're implying that the studio session musicians were mediocre, and that's not quite fair. The American Sound Studio musicians were incredibly tight, leaving little room for mistakes. I do agree with you that the guitar and even the hi-hat sound a bit off in this mix. However, this issue likely stems from the way it was edited for this project. For example, the guitar track could be slightly misaligned by a few milliseconds, which would affect the entire mix. These problems could have been avoided if all tracks had been properly sound-tested before being released on LP or CD. Budget constraints, time pressures, and possibly some laziness also contributed to the final result. By the way, "Suspicious Minds"is not the only mistake in the 1969 sessions. Such a shame.....

    Hi Ed. This is my take. Elvis fans in general should pleased, in fact, elated with these new mixes taken from Original sound that Elvis heard. The producer should be Applauded. Don't Cry Daddy is so clear now with the "brilliant" dual voice and it is stunning. More than interesting, it's brilliant. On the original, I lost Elvis' voice after the words "coffee cup". Now you can hear every word so clearly and the brilliant guitar never sounded better. You nailed it on Suspicious Minds, which is a tricky take, because it originally had a few mistakes in the slowing down, the pause and the restart and most of the song is a Beatle style tape loop. The heavy orchestra with high singers is again, a Producers lucky day. It got Elvis his top song, # 1. The stripped down reveals the powerful song it is even Today. Love the Producer's ability to bring up instruments so nicely now, thanks to AI self technology and gives music fans thrills and chills. Elvis would be laughing hilariously at the new Producer, saying, "Way to go, that's a take !" Now here's an album Elvis fans can play over and over and over again, and not get bored with lawdy-dah strings and just Elvis Rockin' !!!

      But that is not how Moman envisaged his recordings at American Studios. There are set places within the songs where he knew would get filled in with overdubs because that’s what he wanted and what Elvis signed off on so there was no "lucky day" as you suggest. Moman knew what would make a record a commercial success. You don’t need AI technology to bring up or bring down sounds on different tape tracks - they were working on 8 or 16 track tapes. And Sony would not have gone to the expense of using AI technology especially the kind that Jackson used - far too expensive for an Elvis release.
      And why would fans get bored with the original versions as you suggest. The original FEIM `and BIM album were played over and over again when fans first got them - the recordings on those new albums back in 1969 blew fans away after much of the soundtrack crap that he had released. Please stop trying to oversell this new release by putting the originals down implying they are boring.

    I’ve checked and the guitar timing is fine in the original release, as you would expect with top level musicians. This is more likely to be a modern mixing / mastering error, with it somehow being knocked out of alignment. This is a crazy error and makes the band sound ‘sloppy’, which couldn’t have been further from the truth.

    American Sound is the only true Undubbed music here.... "Undubbed" was the selling point for this material. It's clear....Matt Ross raised Elvis' Vocals some and lowered the backup vocals some on all of the remaining tracks here.... Yes, it let's us hear Elvis Clearer on the Stax & Jungle Room tracks. That's great....But, bottom line is, the same exact concept used in the 2 previous Nashville Box Sets should have been used here plus removing backup vocals. This was a failure and letdown for avid fans.

I appreciate your opinion you have every right to Ed, but as far as the sound quality is concerned i have to disagree with you, it really stands out, also when listening to this boxset ? , i sometimes had to pause the music, because i was impressed from what i was hearing, it is that good !....Matt Ross Spang did it again ! All i hear and read are rave reviews about this release all over the internet, Also in Suspicious MInds the guitar is not off, it falls on the first beat of each bar, the 7th bar is a bit of a mess, you just couldn’t hear it in the layered mix with the bass guitar way up in the mix and the added strings track covered it up. Very nice sounds & awesome set. You have a great one Ed Take care 😉

Certainly not the Official UK chart as it would have had to shift around 19k copies to reach the top spot and I doubt it has shifted a thousand at close of business on Friday when the charts were compiled. @@HenkNuwolt The mixes are bad. They're getting worse and worse each release. MRS is ruining Elvis's music.

      I did not say that MATT ROSS SPANG remixed the Sun recordings, i said he did not ,it is stated on the cover of the boxset that MATT ROSS SPANG remixed 88 tracks on this set not including the SUN tracks. I read it was on the UK charts, but i will check it too , thnx for telling.

    This is a totally unnecessary release. We fans al ready have A Boy From Tupelo, FTD releases from the 69 sessions and 5 CD Box American Sound, the 3 CD Box Elvis At Stax. The 74 Memphis we al ready have in perfect sound several times. The 76 sessions has fantastic releases from the FTD label and Way Down In The Jungleroom is just perfect. The sound on this one is really nothing special. As a matter of fact those mixes sound thin, lifeless. Not good. So, I will never would buy the vinyl or the CD Box of this one. Not even for the package or whatever. This is a crap release in my opinion. Friends, the Elvis "bucket" is empty. I have everything I like from Elvis and I can tell you, that is a lot because I am a collector for over 40 years now.
